Wonderful cafe off the beaten path but worth finding

Excellent Cumbrian breakfast and Poached eggs on toast, well cooked and great ingredients. Excellent service and atmosphere too.

My wife and I always enjoy our visits to The Three Crowns with our travelling companions.

Lovely meals and excellent baked goods. Friendly service too. I wish I lived closer.

Always a goto place when we're up here on holiday and visiting Penrith. Food is spot on, gluten free options are available and the service is always with a smile. Oh, and dogs are welcome.

On Friday 20th August I had myself a trip to Penrith and came across this delightful Coffee Shop, the staff were very friendly and I will know where to return when I revisit Penrith in the future

Friendly staff, generous portions, perfectly cooked chips, nice coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere made this out-of-the-way tearoom a wonderful lunch spot. We're glad we went exploring in Penrith, stumbling across this lovely place made our day.

Found this wee gem of a place walking through the main town, it is up an alley in a beautiful courtyard. The staff were very welcoming and the food scrumptious. We will definitely be back.

Hidden gem, tucked away. Scones to die for! My wife had a cheese scone, I had a fruit scone with jam and cream - both were a good size and very light. The jam was delicious - home made raspberry, lovely tartness.

We were lucky enough to get a table one busy, wet lunchtime. A good range of tasty lunch options- hot and cold. The homebaked cakes should not be missed! Highly recommended.

Muy agradable, acogedor establecimiento amables propietarios estado aquí alrededor de 14 años, creo. Sopas caseras encantadoras (¡he probado algunas ahora!) Y café recién hecho. Aseos y periódicos limpios. Justo al lado de la calle principal y no muy lejos del aparcamiento más cercano a Booths y Morrisons. Vale la pena una visita.

Cocinado bien, bien presentado y con tocino local, etc., sabía maravilloso. Mermelada con la tostada muy sabrosa. No era una persona de bebidas calientes, así que tenía jugo de naranja.En general, vale la pena una visita. Tanto el personal como los clientes fueron amables y conversadores.

Was taken to this fantastic wee cafe today. Off the beaten track up a wee ginnel. Lovely food and very friendly atmosphere. I will definitely be back for lunch again soon. Very popular and loads of food on your plate for a very reasonable price.

First visit to penrith and stumbled across this quaint little tea room. The staff were very friendly and the food freshly made and beautiful.nothing too much trouble and will become a regular on future visits

Escondido junto a Penrith Middlegate, este es un lugar encantador para tomar un café, té o una comida ligera. En un edificio antiguo, es acogedor, cálido y acogedor.

Nice staff , food took quite along time to arrive for a soup and sandwich, sandwich’s were very nice but the soup was very disappointing, it didn’t taste of anything just very watery. We both had a cup of tea which was an amazing brew.

Just keep walking up the little lane, it’s worth it. Excellent coffees and cakes in a friendly little cafe. Recommend.

This is a popular cafe in Penrith and when you visit here and taste the food you'll know why. The menu informs the diner that everything is freshly made so there will be a short wait before getting the food. This is a family run cafe and the food is as good as you would expect at home.

We were looking for lunch and came across an A board advertising this cafe. The approach had us wondering what we would find but it was perfect for what we wanted. Very friendly staff and absolutely lovely food. Even though they were busy they didn't rush us out into the pouring rain.

I last visited this place in June of 2016, I ordered the all day breakfast which was very delicious and a cup of tea.

Had lunch on Saturday and we all enjoyed what we each had. The specials board had some interesting and tasty choices all freshly prepared. Would go back without hesitation and would recommend it highly.

Never had a bad meal here the breakfasts are excellent well cooked and presented. Tricky to find but well worth the effort.

We had lunch here today, both of us has the Traditional All_Day Breakfast which was very filling using good quality local ingredients, the breakfast is good value for money as you get toast & tea/coffee all for £8.

We often pop in for a Coffee or light lunch. The food is always good and fresh. We have also twice used the Tea Shop for outside catering (50 plus teas) and we have always found them to be very good indeed, well priced and there has always been plenty to go around. Their Lemon Drizzle and Coffee Walnut are great!

What a great little tea room/restaurant. We were looking for somewhere independent and quiet and this was the place. Nestled off a little side street on a quaint quadrangle serving lovely home made fare including home made jams. It was busy with a steady flow in and out but the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was good. We were even able to sit outside in the shade of a lovely large tree which is unusual as all too often these places are fronted on busy thoroughfares. We're often in Penrith and will definitely go back there.

Had lunch here pretty small inside but good choices on offer. Staff could be a little friendlier but the food was lovely and well presented. It's just behind the main road so a little hard to find!

Home made food, cooked as you wait by a lovely lady and her two daughters. Nothing is too much trouble and the service is prompt and friendly. Breakfasts are first class as are the home made pies. Worth a call.

Friendly atmosphere, run by two sisters and their mum. Although we only had coffee and scones the quality and presentation were first class.

We found this tea room by chance, and what a find it was. Our boys had a selection of cakes and enjoyed every bit - a proper treat. It was the welcome break that we all needed. Not unreasonably priced and friendly service. This tea room comes very highly recommended. Thank you.

Called here on holiday. Very friendly and very quick service considering she was on her own and we wanted 4 breakfasts.She was quicker then other placed with more people. Breakfast was hot and lovely.It also had mushrooms in the breakfast which you do not get very often, unless you want to pay extra for them. Even had jam and marmalade with the toast.Would highly recommend and will go again when up in the area again.

Although not easily found this Cafe is worth searching for. Called here for afternoon tea and was most impressed with the lovely homemade cakes and scones. Good size teapot, plus welcome water pot, so no short measures as sometimes happens in tea shops. Friendly staff and prompt service. The whole place is well laid out and beautifully clean. An extensive menu, so you are sure to find something you like. If we had to make one criticism - it would be that we were not asked if we had any sandwich preferences. Fortunately my husband liked the variety that I did not. Would certainly visit again when in Penrith, and perhaps try lunch next time.

This is in our home town so we often pop in. The staff are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble, and the food is freshly prepared to order. Their home made cakes are delicious too! Well worth a visit.

Off the main drag but well worth the search. Probably the best breakfast in Penrith always well cooked and pleasant staff.

The top attraction for us on a visit to Penrith.

We noticed a sign for this café off a side street which stated they used local produce so that was something that attracted us. We were given a warm welcome and a highchair was given to us for our toddler. First impressions we got was it was very clean and staff were very helpful. We ordered our meals off a menu with a great choice of dishes and a specials board to choose from too. Although they did serve children's meals I asked the lady if they could possibly do a little picnic type platter up for my toddler and this was no problem. Our food came out and was delicious, I was very impressed with the thick carved ham for the little one rather than the usual wafer thin. We did treat ourselves to a dessert and again there was so many to choose from. Before we left we asked if there was baby changing, the lady did state there was a mat in the toilet, this is all there was with no surface to put it on I was lucky I could get my toddler to stand on the toilet while I changed his nappy. Other than that I would highly recommend this place for food or even if you wanted a light bite.

Good cafés are few and far between but this one is a cracker, the staff are pleasant and welcoming and the food is great. Defiantly will be making a return while working in the area.

We decided on a late trip out last Saturday to Penrith it is only a short drive for us on the motorway and we haven t been for ages. There are lots of places to eat in the main shopping area but we came across the Three Crowns tucked away down a back alley Our first sight of it wasn t brilliant but the people outside eating advised us it was very good so thought we would give it a go. It was 2 30pm so the place was not busy two people leaving as we went in. I had a cheese,ham and pineapple pannie and my husband had a chicken and stuffing crusty small stick we shared a bowl of chips all of which were tasty and hot . The service was good and at least 6 customers came in after us , there food also looked good. The place was clean and the staff really nice. Price wise was a bargain too with 2 twos and food costing around £16.00! Well done and we will certainly pop in next time we are in Penrith hopefully in the near future.

Found this place by accident when shopping away from Center Parcs. Great value and good service. Honest food and a nice little tucked away place.

A hidden treasure of Penrith, not many cafés for breakfast but sure we made the best decision choosing this one, all quality ingredients cooked fresh, polite and swift service for two hungry campers we sat outside, we could have been in France, sun was shining and fried breakfast filling and very tasty, would reccommend

Only found this little place via the main road billboard & didn't believe it was taking us anywhere down a narrow ginnel! So glad we persevered! A wonderful little tea shop with excellent customer service. All freshly made food & selection of cakes. Incredible prices, real value for money, great quality & presentation! Highly recommended. I really hope many others find & use this hidden gem.

This was a pleasant place to eat got a ploughman's lunch it was great it was nice and relaxing there and the the women that owns the place was very nice and pleasant.

After a week of poor centre parcs food the home cooked food on offer here was very welcome - a great stop off on our way back home. Staff helpful and child friendly, food lovely and plenty of choice reasonably priced. Many thanks

I've had lunch at this small cafe 3 times in the past 2-3 years, most recently earlier this week. Its location isn't obvious. If you're on Middlegate, opposite the corner with Burrowgate, you'll see a narrow alleyway between shops, with the teashop's board in front of it. The Three Crowns is a short way along the alley.The place has a cosy, old-fashioned feel, but it's clean. The place would bulge at the scenes if more than 20 people were in it, but I've never seen it quite that busy. Food and drink are very good - it's generally home-made and portions are large. Service is OK - pleasant rather than friendly. There's one small toilet at the back. With a couple of steps at the front door you'd probably have trouble getting in if you use a wheelchair.

The Three Crowns is a lovely little cafe situated in a small square at the back of the high street. The setting is slightly Dickensian. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our afternoon tea was was very good, the fruit scones being particularly tasty. In fine weather a couple outdoor tables are available.

A lovely little cafe in a quiet back street of a lovely town centre.All our food was cooked to order and they were flexible when our little ones wanted their orders changed slightly to the menu. Food was well presented and very good. Staff are friendly and helpfull.Whenever we stay in that area we make sure we pay it a visit.

On our way back from a family holiday to Liverpool, we dropped into the Three Crowns Tea Shop for a bite to eat. The service was abysmal, the waitress who served us was rude, and clattered our plates down and walked away, without saying anything. I asked for a 7UP and was given a diet 7UP, and when I asked if I could have something different as I don't like diet, there was no apology offered, and she merely took it back from me wordlessly, and handed me a Coke. My sister and I ordered the lumpy bumpy toffee cheesecake (can't remember the exact name) and when we got the dish, both slices of cake were covered in bright green mould! We told our waitress, who took the dishes away from us (again, no apology!) and weren't offered another dessert, nor were we offered a reduction on the bill. Absolutely awful, thank goodness I'm unlikely to be in Penrith anytime soon, and if I am, I certainly will not be visiting again!

On our way down South we dropped into Penrith for a quick visit and a break. We were lucky enough to find a cheap car park in the town centre, but more importantly only about 100 yards away was the 3 Crowns Tearoom, it offered outside or inside seating with a very good menu with pleasant service and reasonably prices. It also only around 50 yards away from public toilets, which are very often hard to find in a strange town. Any time we return to Penrirth that will be the itinery, before visiting the shops.
