Went to Hickins Cafe twice whilst we were in alston. They catered for my girlfriend who is a coeliac and they are also dog friendly. Which was ideal as we have a 13 month old puppy, who doesn’t like leaving our side. Both owners and staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and were very catering to our needs. The food was awesome, english breakfast with lovely sausages and sauté potatoes! Would go again!

We waited 45min for someone to come and get our order. Not once did they ask us if "everything is okay". They only came to our table 3 times to take our order, to ask if we were done and to give the check. Now I do not want to believe they gave us poor service cuz of my color but to be the only one of color in there and received such services is questionable.

Making a reservation for two aboard the CAFE LAFAYETTE DINNER TRAIN was a pretty big decision for me. I had never spent that kind of money on a “dinner experience” and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our second year anniversary. Being a huge “Foodie” I was definitely lulled by the exquisite menu that “CAFE LAFAYETTE” seemed to offer. Of course, I don’t like the idea of writing this review but after speaking with someone who claimed to be the owner/operator, I have decided to share my story. You know, in case there is anyone else out there who may be considering this experience to be a “pretty big decision” also! Let me try to have a sense of humor about this like my husband and I had during our dining experience in order to make the best of it. We drove 2 hours North and arrived early. Checking in was quite easy but I would blame that on the Covid regulations. We received our assigned seat, purchased some memorabilia from the gift shop (and excitedly) boarded the train. We had NEVER done anything like this before! So I guess, if you wanna spend 100 bucks (per person) to take 50/50 chance that you may (or may not) get one of the lucky seats (with a view) than by all means - Roll baby, roll! If, like us, you’re stuck on the not-so-lucky-side (that we were on) then you’ll be forced to peer past someone else’s romantic dinner date (like a creep) by trying to get a peak of the view. Chug Chug! “Look! It’s the the Hood of New Hampshire”, declares one guest as we rolled past numerous STORAGE UNITS and PRIMITIVE campsites! Wow! I have never paid this much money to see something like THIS before! After counting - One, two, maybe three spots of land (that showed us an interesting perspective for glancing at storage units) I have to encourage you...hold on. The view you’ve been waiting for upon the Cafe Lafayette... Farmland! Farmland that’s naturally littered with cow-dung including (the added touch) of abandoned vehicles (for necessary animal shelter). In that past, I have paid less than ten bucks to get the same sort of view from a commuter rail riding East from Fitchburg to Boston. So if you enjoy this sort of view, check it out! As if the views (and the predicament) aren’t terrible enough - The dinner is even worse. They stretch your meal over the entire trip - serving one plate every (I don’t know?) 20 Minutes or so? Each plate being the smallest of portions. One (piece) of an appetizer, Three bites of salad (smaller than a regular side salad) and the biggest dinner roll you’ve ever seen, so enjoy it! Now, what about the entree, you ask? THE BIG REVEAL, THE MOMENT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR? ONE chicken thigh covered in a sauce that appears as vomit, soggy mashed potatoes slid right up against that with cubed butternut squash slid right up against that. Parsley sprinkled about. Hungry, who could resist? I may be a critic by now but the FLAT IRON WHISKEY CREAM (as stated on the menu) was actually a brown gravy with blue cheese globes on top. And, the only thing worse than serving flat iron steak as a main course is serving less than an OUNCE of flat iron steak as a main course. I mean, I have seen more steak (added as an extra) on a salad before. All in all - They can’t say that they’re outrageous price is because of the views because the views aren’t worth paying for (especially when the Kancamagus Highway is basically the same street), And they can’t say they charge an arm-and-a-leg because their food is “top notch” when their serving you the lowest meat on the meat-pole and in the smallest portions possible while choosing to skimp-out on the salad and apps... Their website promises “something totally different” that also promises their guests “will enjoy a dining experience of a lifetime” (quotes taken right from their website, September 27th, 2020) I guess that’s true for all the worst of reasons. To the diner, Save your money. To Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train, Stop robbing people.

What a fantastic cafe! I stopped here with my dog and after a lovely walk by river and railway line we were welcomed into the cafe. The pea and ham soup was some of the best soup I’ve tasted - all obviously made from scratch with a good stock. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and my dog was greatly admired! She appreciated the biscuits. I would heartily recommend anyone stopping here. I wish I’d had space for cake too, I’m sure it would have been equally as good. Thank you to everyone at Hickins.

5 course meal isn't quite a 5 course meal. Dessert was seriously underwhelming. Well made, but chocolate mousse is seriously meh for the cost of the meal. White mountains in fall. They could have done an apple crisp. Pumpkin pie. Something more interesting. 2 hour ride is one hour out, one hour back of seriously underwhelming scenery, considering what should be available in the generally beautiful white mountains. Out and back on same spur. Meaning you'll get to see the same scenery twice. Dome car is cool, but since they didn't replace the upper windows it's not really a dome. It's more like an elevated deck car. Overall, this was one and done for us. So much potential, and I think the care is there to make it happen. As a footnote, the obnoxious, foul, loud and uncouth 11 person party from MA absolutely didn't improve the experience. I hope they get charged more on principle.

So I just recently went on the train with my friend and I loved the vintage feel and atmosphere. The music was right for the vintage feel. I loved the stained antique glass throughout the train. I reserved the main level dining instead of the deluxe (someone told me that the deluxe is where they group you together and have no space), so if you can reserve the main level dining if you can for ample amount of space between people. The food was amazing and cozy like you were at home. I would say if you live in New England that views would be better in the fall, seeing the foliage but it was a nice 2 1/2 hours of a relaxing time on the train. I would definitely return again once the trees start changing color. Also adding this to your vacation plans would be something I'd look into.

Love the historical train! Wish the track was a bit more interesting...I can view people's back yards from the highway, too. Service was great. Well times food arrived with friendly faces. Food was good, but not anything memorable. I did the stuffed chicken and was a little disappointed; it didn't feel crafty or homemade, or matching the atmosphere. Salad was the high note; fresh and clean...was great.

We are north country locals and thought we would try the train, even though it had never been experienced or recommended by friends. After a marginal meal, at best, the cluster began. When it came time to pay our bill, waitresses and the bus boy seemed to be in a race to collect everyone's payments. A different waitress returned with three, black, check presenters, containing three different credit cards displayed. She laid them on our table, as if they had been shuffled, and said, "pick one". I smiled and said, which one should I pick? She said, "take yours." I quickly noticed that the bill was different than the original one which was presented to me. The prices of our drinks was different. Naturally, this was strange and suspicious. As I reviewed my bill and signed it, I heard the lady at the table next to me tell her waitress that she had checked the charges on her phone and noticed there was serious error. Her credit card had just been charged for $400 some dollars, rather than $200. for her party of two. She requested a correction and was told she would have to wait until they de-trained and went to the office. As we walked off, we overheard another table, which remained seated, trying to get their bill adjusted. The waitress told them that they would have to go out to the office and have someone fix it there. Needless to say, the evening ended on a sour note with the cluster and confusion. It made us wonder how many guests on our trip had been effected, how often does this occur? In our opinion, your dining dollars would be best spent elsewhere.

A welcome return visit to Hickens'@ The Crossing's Cafe, with my friend and my grandchildren. It was very busy but we were welcomed with a smile and shown to a table for two and my grandchildren were sat on a very comfy sofa next us(it was extremely busy) ordered our food and drinks and was told there would be a thirty minute wait, was that OK? It was, they serve people in order, no-one served before later customer, a fair system in our eyes. As usual, the food was delicious, children had sausage, chips and beans and piping hot, cooked to order, nothing from a hot plate. My friend and I had their delicious scones, cheese and a fruit and cherry scone with a little jar of jam and a tub of Rhoddas clotted cream, all quality food. The café tends to be busy before a train ride is due and over the school holidays. Excellent service, friendly staff and very good value for money. It's worth noting the café is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, they have to rest and bake their delicious cakes, scones etc, but well worth the trip to Alston. We'll be back again soon. The station itself is well worth a visit, we have been on the heritage railway several times and the volunteers are brilliant.

Cool place with additional seating upstairs. It was snowing so the views were amazing. Brunch menu is small but excellent. The best croissant I've ever eaten in my life came with the Eggs Benedict. The Flamenco skillet was unbelievable. We feel like we found a true diamond in the rough here. From the moment I was greeted by somebody at the reception desk they were very unfriendly. She gave me instructions as if I was a second grader and when I didn’t understand them, she got angry at me and repeated them with a stern voice. I walked away and joined my family. As I was explaining my encounter with the woman who greeted me, other guests around me agreed and said they felt the exact same way. It's advertised as a five-course gourmet meal but is nothing better than ordinary. A few sprinkles of parsley and an edible flower does not make it gourmet. 1. Bread was the first course. Bread!?!?!? Bread is not considered a course. They gave us bread for four people with one pad of butter. When I asked for more, they gave us one more pad to split among 4 people. 2. Salad was the second course. The salad was just an ordinary salad of greens with a couple of pepitas and cranberries thrown in. It was not gourmet (see picture). 3. A small scoop of sorbet was considered course #3. The sorbet was good, but sorbet is not a course. In Michelin and James Beard gourmet restaurants I have eaten in, the sorbet is served between the courses as a palette cleanser to prepare for the next course. 4. I had the short ribs for the main course, and they were dry and not warm (see picture). Another person in our party had the vegetable bowl and it was Ramen noodles with some vegetables. In fact, some of the noodles were not even cooked all the way and still stuck together like they are when they are dry (see picture). 5. The dessert also was not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination. The ONLY choice was chocolate whipped cream. Poor selection of one choice since some people don’t like chocolate or whipped cream. The alternatives they had was a dish with about six slices of frozen strawberries. Again, I’m not sure how you call that gourmet. 6. Most important, your staff didn’t even acknowledge my daughter’s birthday which was the whole premise we took this experience for. I reminded them 2 times about this. 7. When the waitress brought the check, she gave to our youngest son instead of me. What wait staff would do that? Did she really think he was paying $1400 for the party? 8. They generously added a 20% tip for themselves because we had a party of 8. I can understand that in a real restaurant when they must manage 8 different orders. But here it was cafeteria style where everyone on the train got the same bread, the same salad, the same sorbet, and the same dessert. They only difference with the main course. So having a party of 2 or 30 is not a strain on the kitchen or the wait staff managing timing of different orders to the party. And with the very poor service they certainly did not warrant 20%. I will agree with other reviews I have read that the scenery is nice at times and other times looking run down. When management finally responded to my email after a few days, she was not very nice or truly concerned for my feedback as a paying customer. Then she replied with 3 lies on my Trip Advisor review. 1. They did not put a candle in my daughter’s desert, 2. She did not respond within 24 hours 3. We did take the substitute desert which was 2 frozen strawberries sliced I would avoid this attraction!! Save yourself the $125. There are better places to spend your money in the area.

This is a great experience that you should enjoy at least once. My family goes every year in the early fall. The train ride offers fine scenery as it travels through the forest and along the Pemigewasset River. The food is excellent. The drinks are also excellent, but if you want one right now you may have to wait because the staff is on a tight schedule. It's fun to tour the train once back at the station. Quite historic- and fun!

Having been another dinner trains I have to say this was one of the nicest. It didn't have the old time feeling however it was a well orchestrated dinner and trip. Although the portions were small they were tasty and we did not walk away hungry.

After scouring reviews it sounded like there was a good side of the train and a bad side for scenery. In reality nothing could be further from the truth, they’re both good. The funny thing is the couple across the aisle seemed to have gotten the same impression so we joked about that as we started and then as we realized it was wrong. From either side you will see a few backyard, storage sheds, and other evidence of modern living. This train isn’t magically taking you back to a time before that existed, it isn’t going through a private nature park, it’s going down old train tracks. From either side you will also see beautiful forests, rivers, lakes and other natural habitats. If you’re there to stare out the windows though and not engage with whoever you’re there with, then maybe you need to reevaluate why you’re there with them. The scenery was something to pause our conversation or pause eating our excellent meal for, it wasn’t the main draw for us, just an added bonus. Maybe they have good nights and bad nights with the food. It’s totally possible. I worked as a chef’s apprentice in country clubs, head cook in several fine dining restaurants, and manager of many restaurants over the years before I fled the service industry to save my sanity. I can tell you from my experience in food service and eating at fine restaurants all over the US, this place is a good fine dining restaurant. I don’t know if some people hit a night the kitchen was scrambling because their food shipment didn’t show up on time, someone called out, or something else happened, or maybe they’re just angry people looking to complain. It is a small set menu. That’s not uncommon in finer restaurants. If you want a big laminated menu with something of everything, go to Outback or Red Lobster. Set menu let’s them really focus on a few menu items for amazing results. We were just in the area for a vacation but if we come back we’ll definitely try this again.

Poor Father’s Day experience on this train. First off, you have no dedicated staff to your table. So we literally waited 40 min for our beverages… to add insult to injury no one for the rest of the time offered to refresh our drinks. The dinner roll was the best thing on the trip, the food was small portioned and my entree (eggplant rollatini) the eggplant was so tough my daughter and I could barely cut it with a knife. I was charged $121 for a tip even though no where on the site did it say gratuity added. I don’t mind paying 20% for a tip, but with no serve (no one attending to our drinks or checking in to see how we are doing) the amount was grossly excessive. Ditto to everyone who talked about the backyard’s and multiple self storage facilities. The concept was interesting and charming, but that’s where it begins and ends. Would not recommend.

June 11, 2022 Vinny and I got married at the arboretum right outside the dinner train. Allie went out of her way to make sure our guests were well accommodated!! The food was superb!! Five star service!! The overall package was excellent including a totally scenic view through the forest, rivers and all the antique bridges. we would highly recommend this entire dinner train package to anyone seeking a different and excellent wedding, special occasion or just enjoying a night on the train!!

The food was pretty "meh". No real better than any other restaurant. The train ride was okay, but be prepared for lots of views of backyards, camps, and self-storage units...would not recommend. At least the bar tender had a heavy hand

I had the 5 course meal. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great, and the staff was top notch. My only complaint was that the hot water they gave me for tea seemed to be water that had been run through a coffee maker, so the water was faintly brownish and smelled like coffee. When I asked the server for fresh water, the water she brought had the same issue.

It was a good stop after visiting ice castle in starting of march. We were feeling bery cold from our adventure of ice castle and were a bit hungry so we decided to stop on this for quick bite. After reading reviews we got to know that this is a sought after place in fall season. Decor was definitely great, we loved seating arrangements and lights. Food was good as well, although veg options are limited and potion sizes are small. We ordered 2 cocktail and both liked what they ordered. Veg fries was yummiest of all. It was crispy and well cooked. We loved it. Prices are on little higher side as you expect from fine dining restaurant.
