A bucket list sort of adventure, and overall, it was worth it just for the experience of dining on a train. Waitstaff throughout were outstanding. Meals were okay with pluses being the roll, salmon entree, mashed potatoes, butternut squash, and dessert. Chicken was a bit dry in the piccata, and the stuffed mushroom appetizer and salad were a disappointment. Though I would not want to be the one cooking a variety of courses for a train load of people.

Absolutely amazing experience!!! My wife surprised me with this for my birthday and it was a dream come true. The food and the service were bonuses. On arrival you are greeted by incredible staff members who check you in and show you the appetizer and entree menu. There are four options each day. You are then provided with a boarding pass and ultimately boarded in order of where you sit. We were seated in section A which turned out to be great. Our seats were far more comfortable than the banquet looking chairs in the other sections and because of the close proximity to the kitchen your order is taken first and food is also delivered first. There are also only 4 tables in this section so the car is quiet and intimate. Once seated at a beautifully set table setting you are first offered drinks, which are not included in the price. There is a full bar and wine list on board. We ordered two glasses of sparkling wine and then a bottle of wine for dinner. Your order is then taken. Once the train departs fresh baked and very large dinner rolls are brought to the table. You then receive your appetizer and then salads. A mango/strawberry sorbet is then served to cleanse your pallet before your entree. The entrées arrived and were just as delicious as the previous courses. Around now, about an hour into the ride, the train comes to a stop and begins the journey back to the station. This is when coffee/tea service begins. Once everyone has the beverage of their choice a chocolate mouse dessert is then served. I would highly recommend this experience and soak in the nostalgic experience to its max. Mid October is the best time to go.

Not worth the cost. Annoyed that over 20% gratuity was added to an already too high cost bill AND additional tip was requested upon final receipt of charge ! Bill was 248. Auto gratuity of 55. Added by them and bill was presented with another tip line like I HADN’T ALREADY been forced to pay a $55. tip, really ?! Best part was the personnel. However: Even though Service was impeccable and perfectly timed, demanding 55. From every couple and then asking for more is excessive. Food only fair. Riding backwards while eating made me feel ill. I saw better scenery on my way to get TO the train than while on it. A bit claustrophobic in the dome, would have preferred main dining area.

The whole experience was very good Their servers were great - quick and efficient and very accommodating. The scenery was lovely, much of the foliage had autumn hues. There were several really nice scenic spots with large creeks and so forth. We had the maple pumpkin bisque to start with which was delicious, Then we had a salad which was just okay, I'm not sure of what kind of dressing it had but there wasn't much on it and the salad was kind of dry and tasteless. I had the citrus dill salmon that came with mashed potatoes and diced squash or pumpkin. It was very good - the salmon was delicious and cooked properly. For dessert we were served chocolate mousse and coffee which were both good.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the dinner train. The views are beautiful, the service is top notch, they set the mood with smooth jazz and the food is absolutely delicious. We sat in the dome level and I’ll be looking to make a yearly tradition out of it. It’s no wonder they sell out. Farah (I hope I spelled that right🤞) was fantastic and super friendly. I could go on at length, but bottom line is if you can do it, treat yourself!

This experience is to say the least, very disappointing. The parking area is not large enough. As for the train, if you like passing a wastewater plant, and travel along embankments, you will be fine. It travels about 5 miles per hour with just about no scenery for foliage viewing. Maybe a 5 mile trip then back the same way. The food is decent and so is the service but all is rushed to fit into a 2 hour ride. I would not recommend this train for fall foliage viewing. Sorry, but for $516.00 with a tip for 4 people, it isn't worth it.

The service was outstanding, don't listen to those who say otherwise, the apps were delicious, however, the beef wellington, was hard to eat. I would definitely change that one up. The chicken satay was delicious, maybe make that the meal? or Swedish meatballs, I just feel the beef wellington is too hard to cook on a train. I will definitely visit again. Otherwise the whole experience was perfect and very romantic. Thank you Lafayette for a great evening!

What a crappy experience. 1. We alerted them that there was a peanut allergy ahead of time and they indicated that peanuts would not be on the menu. One of the entrees was a peanut sauce and there was almonds on the salad. 2. The train left 45 minutes late, advertised as 2 hours. But actually 3. Dont bother getting there early as they ask because you just end up waiting for other people to arrive and be seated after the train was supposed to depart. 3. The train is literally falling apart. Parts of the windows and shelving were literally falling off as the train was driving. Its also very cramped. 4. The route is not scenic. You get to see a lot of houses and even more trash piles. I would go so far as to call this false advertising. 5. The bread was good. The entree was ok. The rest of the food was garbage. I would have been interested to know that one of the courses was just a sugar palate cleanser and another was coffee without milk as an option. The desert had alcohol in it, which wasnt advertised or announced, not a fan of that. 6. It cost 500 dollars for 3 hours of crap views and crap food in a crap train. I would recommend skipping this.

Be careful if you have food allergies. I let them know before that we had one gluten and dairy and one dairy sensitivity. When we arrived, they confirmed that with me and our server confirmed again. When they brought out the dinner rolls, they gave us all one including the ones with the allergies. I asked the server about a gluten free roll and she said we had to let them know beforehand, which I said I did. When she came back, she said there weren't any left but also said they had dairy in them so maybe that was why they didn't have one for us (but yet gave them the regular dinner rolls with gluten and dairy). They brought out the salads covered in cheese and gave one to all of us including the two who couldn't have dairy. When they brought the dessert out, they gave my son who just has the dairy allergy some dairy free ice cream but gave my daughter who also doesn't eat dairy, chocolate mousse. I had also requested a candle in the dessert for my husband's birthday, which didn't come. They did realize it before we left and apologized but it was still disappointing. it was a very expensive meal especially for the two that couldn't eat most of what they gave us. Also, I did reach out to them before writing this review hoping they would at least respond and they didn't Edit: In response to their response. They never spoke to me in person nor have responded to three emails. And my daughter with the gluten allergy ordered salmon, not beef wellington and she didn't order dessert...that is what was given to her.

Cafe Lafayette's Dinner Train is such a special experience... absolutely loved every moment of it. It's a fantastic choice for a date night or anniversary - or just a fun get together with the family or friends. You reserve online and once you arrive in person, you're issued a boarding pass that you can keep, boarding starts sharply at the listed time and you are boarded by order of which group and table you're assigned. Food is five courses - a roll, appetizer, salad, sorbet, entree, and dessert. The menu is changed seasonally, this time around we were treated to a menu that included beef wellington! The kitchen cooks everything while you're underway and does it phenomenally fast, and well. The serving staff here are attentive and more than ready to help as much as they're able. Everything is included in the $99/$129 per person fee, save for gratuity and any drinks you might grab while underway. There's a drink menu that outlines prices for almost everything - soft drinks are available for $3/glass. While underway the train plays gentle jazz music, and the lights are kept moderately low. There's also a bathroom on I believe each train car, the one in the dome car features a window, full sink and amenities for freshening up, and is located centrally in the car. The train gets underway with a locomotive from the Granite State Scenic Railway that's attached just after you've boarded, and the entire train travels at around 5mph or so for the round trip, meaning you have plenty of time to view the scenery while you enjoy your meal. At the end - there's the Depot, which is open off season as a Tapas restaurant, that features period/theme accurate decor, and small gift items, mugs, train whistles, and the sort - as well as a non-lego brick set that's of the dome car, the Granite Eagle. Everything here is a delightful addition to the experience - and I can't recommend this enough. If you love trains, if you love seeing nature in a unique way, and if you love delightful dining experiences - all of these are reasons to go!

Dinner Train 7/5/24 This is for you if you really, really like trains. Come for the train I guess, not for any other part of it. Food service is 5 courses, but as other reviewers have noted, they are tiny, lackluster, and would be disappointing anywhere you paid for them. Dinner roll, bad salad, tiny underseasoned appetizer, melon ball of sherbert, poorly cooked entree, and well… the chocolate mousse was alright. Views were NOT GOOD. This train is not scenic beyond the first 100 yards crossing the river. You’ll have a wastewater treatment facility, landscape supply of a defunct golf course, storage facilities dumping ground, and various other unsightly bits of NH. Staff were kind. This experience was in no way worth the money or time.

Our second visit here and went for a late lunch after the train ride on the South Tynedale railway. Fancied egg, ham and chips as a treat and it was lovely with their own cooked ham and plenty of chunky chips. Lovely clean cafe with friendly staff. We were shocked to see a sign outside saying that the cafe was 'to let' so asked about this and the people running it are retiring at the end of October. We hope whoever takes it on will keep up the high standard and we wish the Hickins a long and happy retirement - they have earned it! Unhappily the cute and clean buffet car on the railway line at Slaggyford is also going due to retirement so we were pleased to have experienced this today too.

The only thing worse than the well done beef Wellington was the service. We ordered a bottle of champagne and it was served at room temperature. I took one bite of the beef and that was it. The server never refilled my water glass, which was empty for over half of the trip, nor did she ask why my meal wasn’t eaten. To cap things off, there was no running water in the bathroom sink so I couldn’t wash my hands. The ambiance and scenery was good, but that doesn’t justify the price for what I got. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

I saw this dinner train from someone’s video on tiktok and thought that it looked like the cutest idea for a romantic date with my boyfriend. Safe to say we were severely underwhelmed. In the first 3 minutes of the train ride, we were greeted by a beautiful sewage view! Followed by people’s backyards, storage units, trash, and the highway. Far and few between were the “scenic” sights advertised on the website and in Cafe Lafayette’s brochure. The food was subpar at best. It reminded me of the food they would serve at a barmitzvah. The first course was a singular dinner roll. For the second course, I got the caprese as my appetizer and my boyfriend got the chicken peanut skewers. Both were microscopic. Then for the third course, we were served about 1/4 of a cup of spring mix lettuce with almonds and blueberries and dressing drizzled on. Then we were served a palette cleanser which was a melon sized scoop of sorbet. The fourth course was our entrees, which was salmon. That was good at least but I wanted to salt my salmon and there were no salt shakers aboard that had not become hard and stuck together due to the humidity. I seriously tried 3 salt shakers before I had to unscrew one and start chipping at it like a fossil exacavation. Lastly, the fifth and final course was dessert which consisted of a measily slice of british toffee cake with again a melon sized scoop of melted vanilla ice cream on top. My boyfriend and I also ordered two diet coke ($3 each, no refills). This all came to a wopping grand total of $247.78. Not including the gas it took us to come here. For a “fine dining” establishment, the food did not measure up and neither did the service.

Making a reservation for two aboard the CAFE LAFAYETTE DINNER TRAIN was a pretty big decision for me. I had never spent that kind of money on a “dinner experience” and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our second year anniversary. Being a huge “Foodie” I was definitely lulled by the exquisite menu that “CAFE LAFAYETTE” seemed to offer. Of course, I don’t like the idea of writing this review but after speaking with someone who claimed to be the owner/operator, I have decided to share my story. You know, in case there is anyone else out there who may be considering this experience to be a “pretty big decision” also! Let me try to have a sense of humor about this like my husband and I had during our dining experience in order to make the best of it. We drove 2 hours North and arrived early. Checking in was quite easy but I would blame that on the Covid regulations. We received our assigned seat, purchased some memorabilia from the gift shop (and excitedly) boarded the train. We had NEVER done anything like this before! So I guess, if you wanna spend 100 bucks (per person) to take 50/50 chance that you may (or may not) get one of the lucky seats (with a view) than by all means - Roll baby, roll! If, like us, you’re stuck on the not-so-lucky-side (that we were on) then you’ll be forced to peer past someone else’s romantic dinner date (like a creep) by trying to get a peak of the view. Chug Chug! “Look! It’s the the Hood of New Hampshire”, declares one guest as we rolled past numerous STORAGE UNITS and PRIMITIVE campsites! Wow! I have never paid this much money to see something like THIS before! After counting - One, two, maybe three spots of land (that showed us an interesting perspective for glancing at storage units) I have to encourage you...hold on. The view you’ve been waiting for upon the Cafe Lafayette... Farmland! Farmland that’s naturally littered with cow-dung including (the added touch) of abandoned vehicles (for necessary animal shelter). In that past, I have paid less than ten bucks to get the same sort of view from a commuter rail riding East from Fitchburg to Boston. So if you enjoy this sort of view, check it out! As if the views (and the predicament) aren’t terrible enough - The dinner is even worse. They stretch your meal over the entire trip - serving one plate every (I don’t know?) 20 Minutes or so? Each plate being the smallest of portions. One (piece) of an appetizer, Three bites of salad (smaller than a regular side salad) and the biggest dinner roll you’ve ever seen, so enjoy it! Now, what about the entree, you ask? THE BIG REVEAL, THE MOMENT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR? ONE chicken thigh covered in a sauce that appears as vomit, soggy mashed potatoes slid right up against that with cubed butternut squash slid right up against that. Parsley sprinkled about. Hungry, who could resist? I may be a critic by now but the FLAT IRON WHISKEY CREAM (as stated on the menu) was actually a brown gravy with blue cheese globes on top. And, the only thing worse than serving flat iron steak as a main course is serving less than an OUNCE of flat iron steak as a main course. I mean, I have seen more steak (added as an extra) on a salad before. All in all - They can’t say that they’re outrageous price is because of the views because the views aren’t worth paying for (especially when the Kancamagus Highway is basically the same street), And they can’t say they charge an arm-and-a-leg because their food is “top notch” when their serving you the lowest meat on the meat-pole and in the smallest portions possible while choosing to skimp-out on the salad and apps... Their website promises “something totally different” that also promises their guests “will enjoy a dining experience of a lifetime” (quotes taken right from their website, September 27th, 2020) I guess that’s true for all the worst of reasons. To the diner, Save your money. To Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train, Stop robbing people.

5 course meal isn't quite a 5 course meal. Dessert was seriously underwhelming. Well made, but chocolate mousse is seriously meh for the cost of the meal. White mountains in fall. They could have done an apple crisp. Pumpkin pie. Something more interesting. 2 hour ride is one hour out, one hour back of seriously underwhelming scenery, considering what should be available in the generally beautiful white mountains. Out and back on same spur. Meaning you'll get to see the same scenery twice. Dome car is cool, but since they didn't replace the upper windows it's not really a dome. It's more like an elevated deck car. Overall, this was one and done for us. So much potential, and I think the care is there to make it happen. As a footnote, the obnoxious, foul, loud and uncouth 11 person party from MA absolutely didn't improve the experience. I hope they get charged more on principle.

So I just recently went on the train with my friend and I loved the vintage feel and atmosphere. The music was right for the vintage feel. I loved the stained antique glass throughout the train. I reserved the main level dining instead of the deluxe (someone told me that the deluxe is where they group you together and have no space), so if you can reserve the main level dining if you can for ample amount of space between people. The food was amazing and cozy like you were at home. I would say if you live in New England that views would be better in the fall, seeing the foliage but it was a nice 2 1/2 hours of a relaxing time on the train. I would definitely return again once the trees start changing color. Also adding this to your vacation plans would be something I'd look into.

We are north country locals and thought we would try the train, even though it had never been experienced or recommended by friends. After a marginal meal, at best, the cluster began. When it came time to pay our bill, waitresses and the bus boy seemed to be in a race to collect everyone's payments. A different waitress returned with three, black, check presenters, containing three different credit cards displayed. She laid them on our table, as if they had been shuffled, and said, "pick one". I smiled and said, which one should I pick? She said, "take yours." I quickly noticed that the bill was different than the original one which was presented to me. The prices of our drinks was different. Naturally, this was strange and suspicious. As I reviewed my bill and signed it, I heard the lady at the table next to me tell her waitress that she had checked the charges on her phone and noticed there was serious error. Her credit card had just been charged for $400 some dollars, rather than $200. for her party of two. She requested a correction and was told she would have to wait until they de-trained and went to the office. As we walked off, we overheard another table, which remained seated, trying to get their bill adjusted. The waitress told them that they would have to go out to the office and have someone fix it there. Needless to say, the evening ended on a sour note with the cluster and confusion. It made us wonder how many guests on our trip had been effected, how often does this occur? In our opinion, your dining dollars would be best spent elsewhere.

A welcome return visit to Hickens'@ The Crossing's Cafe, with my friend and my grandchildren. It was very busy but we were welcomed with a smile and shown to a table for two and my grandchildren were sat on a very comfy sofa next us(it was extremely busy) ordered our food and drinks and was told there would be a thirty minute wait, was that OK? It was, they serve people in order, no-one served before later customer, a fair system in our eyes. As usual, the food was delicious, children had sausage, chips and beans and piping hot, cooked to order, nothing from a hot plate. My friend and I had their delicious scones, cheese and a fruit and cherry scone with a little jar of jam and a tub of Rhoddas clotted cream, all quality food. The café tends to be busy before a train ride is due and over the school holidays. Excellent service, friendly staff and very good value for money. It's worth noting the café is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, they have to rest and bake their delicious cakes, scones etc, but well worth the trip to Alston. We'll be back again soon. The station itself is well worth a visit, we have been on the heritage railway several times and the volunteers are brilliant.

What a great place, friendly staff a brilliant location, sat and watched a steam train go by whilst enjoying a coffee. The coffee was as good as anywhere I have been and served in the most delightful cup, really should have asked where they were from as wifey is quite taken with the photo I sent her. A great place and very welcoming for motorcyclists and pedal cyclists. We only had a hot drink but the food looked and smelled delicious. This place will definately be getting a revisit..

Fantastic place for visit. Spent a happy day riding the railway through some of the most gorgeous countryside in the country. Very friendly staff made it an even better day. Parked my motorhome in their car park overnight for a small fee which avoided a search for a site. Ideal stopover place as so much lovely countryside to enjoy. Alston is a lovely hamlet with lots of very interesting buildings and history. I will defiantly be visiting South Tyneside Heritage Railway again.

A cafe situated in a lovely spot, with great food to match. Welcoming staff and generous portions at good prices. From the man on a long walk who got back to London in good time.

What a great time. 5 course dinner on a train ride with beautiful scenery. Not pictured: an amazing, fresh dinner roll that we devoured before taking pictures. The service staff was quick and accurate. Great vintage vibe. Food was really good. So worth the investment of time and money. An unique experience and way to experience the northeast.

Hidden Gem. Setting was great, service was great, food was great, drinks were great. Not much to complain about. It's a small plate tapas restaurant with a super limited season. Get there while you can.

Was looking for a Sunday brunch and this place did not show up on Google maps under breakfast or brunch, but we drove past the Sunday Brunch sign on Main St and turned right around to check it out. Cool place with additional seating upstairs. It was snowing so the views were amazing. Brunch menu is small but excellent. The best croissant I've ever eaten in my life came with the Eggs Benedict. The Flamenco skillet was unbelievable. We feel like we found a true diamond in the rough here. Every place in town was 1-2 hour wait but here we were, alone, dining at what might be the best restaurant in the area. Can't wait to try something else next time or to attend one of their train dinners.

Let me start out by saying “oh my god”! This place and let me state beforehand I live in CT, this is my favorite dinner restaurant by leaps and bounds! Such a unique place tapas styles dishes that are exquisitely delicious. Drinks made to perfection. And a nice cozy rustic atmosphere i could blow my entire bank account here. We were on vacation in Lincoln me and my fiancé we went one night and came back the next we were blown away both times and we plan to visit NH just for the depot for now on! Thank you for the experiences.

The food was MEH and not worth the price. We had dinner reservations with them and figured to check out the train during the day. The owner came out screaming his head off at us and didn’t give us a chance to explain. He was incredibly rude. Ruined our whole trip! Don’t come to this place unless you want to be yelled at.

Have visited twice now, first to try the legendary breakfast bap which more than lived up to its reputation and then for lunch with friend. Spotlessly clean cafe, tasty generous portions and friendly welcome from owners who are lovely. Panini with very fresh side salad eventually defeated me and fussy friend who for once cleared her plate said her soup was fab. The coffee is very good too. Only wished we’d had room for the home made cakes! Next time. Thanks all

We had been told that this cafe was worth a visit and it certainly was. Engaging hosts with a sense of humour, clean and attractive surroundings and really tasty food. The coffee was excellent, too. It is very evident that the owners are passionate about their business and care about their customers. So lovely to go somewhere and be greeted, not just faced with indifferent youngsters playing on their mobile phones! Thank you, we will be back.

Fantastic experience. Everything was very smooth and easy going. During my ride, I had the pleasure of dining inside a vintage 1920s train car. The train ride took us over many bridges and food stretches of dense forests. A great ride to catch the turning of the leaves or even just to have a relaxing train ride. Would do again!

I took my daughter back in time when she turned 21 I took her on a dinner train ride in Rhode Island. Since that one was no longer in operation I found this one in the White mountains. It was majestic and beautiful and the atmosphere was perfect. If you love Romance or an elegant dinner with a friend or loved one, I definitely and highly recommend this journey.

The dinner was just OK. The windows in the car I was in, needed to be cleaned. I couldn't see very well and taking pictures, when there was a good one to be had, wasn't possible. The scenery and the meal wasn't really worth it to me.

I did enjoy the meal and drinks. I was to crazy on the appetizers only being two small idea's. I sorta laughed at the fact we got two small Mushrooms. The only downfall is I was expecting a ride through the forest but ended up being trailers, golf course and lots of streets and houses and companies..

This is my second experience… the first was about 2 years ago and was fabulous from start to finish. My recent experience … the service was great and the experience was well organized… however I feel the quality of the food had decreased.. I had the apple cheddar chicken but it was no more than a different version of chicken cordon bleu and seemed liked it was boxed chicken. The meal was well prepared but the quality was mediocre. The dessert was a simple chocolate mouse. Although some would not complain, the bartender had a heavy hand and I had to have them add more mixers to the drink so I could drink it. I bragged about my prior experience and even brought 6 people with me this time… but unfortunately I will not return.

The view isn’t what it says, we saw a junk yard, no mountains, and roads. If you make that reservation and one does not come you will be charged which is understandable but you don’t get to take the dinner with you either. They decide what your tip will be let’s say $120 for 5 guest. Beverage is not included. The dishes are very small and distasteful. Enjoy !

My boyfriend and I loved our time on the dinner train! it is expensive but we are glad we did it. Included in the ticket price is a fresh, flaky dinner roll, an appetizer, a salad, an entree, sorbet, and dessert. Drinks are sold separately. The tip is extra. The food and drinks were awesome, the service was great, the ambiance is very relaxing and there are plenty of nice views. We were camping with our dog that weekend and needed someone to watch him for the time we were on the train. We used Jan from "One Dog Day" and I couldn't recommend her highly enough, our dog instantly loved her and was relaxed and we knew he was in good hands. On top of that, she's only 3 minutes away and super affordable!!

We go to The Bridge about 4 times per year. We are not very extravagant but when we do eat out we want it to be better than I can make at home. Any guest we bring with us all love it too. Every meal we’ve had here has been excellent! My favourites are Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, The Seafood Linguini, my hubby loves the Fish & Chips (he has this every time he goes, lol) . My son loves the Squid starter and I also love the Pate when it’s on. I had a gorgeous fish course in spring but I forget the name of the fish which was the whitest fish I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend Bridge Bistro.

While looking for food we stumbled on this lucky find. The Bothy is a very welcoming themed cafe, due to most other venues in Kirby Stephen only serving drinks that day the bothy was busy but we still received a warm welcome and advised we would have a wait, we didn’t mind so placed our order. The food was different, not the cheapest but absolutely delicious, the staff even though very busy were so polite and kept us informed of progress with our order. A bit more of an offer for children would be a bonus.

Had an excellent early supper, starters were beautiful, good selection, tasty and well presented . The mains, steaks and a roast dinner were equally good. Substantial portions and cooked exactly to our specifications. We had delicious desserts and everything was complemented by some very good wines. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The chef obviously uses quality ingredients and is extremely competent . Lovely ambience, delicious supper.
