** A group of 18 diners who all pre ordered food weeks before our visit ……..** the portion are huge so go hungry sadly the rest of our experience wasn’t great mains all arrived at different times some diners had eaten most of their main before the next main arrived desserts pre ordered too & were “not” available ! some of the food sadly wasn’t cooked to the best of standards coffee & tea arrived before our desserts far too long in between courses plus a few other issues but sadly the worse was when one of our party complained at the end & the owner / chef called her out in front of locals not very professional. Unfortunately non of us want to return & we are all local people. The two ladies who served us work very hard & we thank you for your service

Update 3rd Feb '23 Returned for an evening meal. Can only reiterate that the quality did not disappoint. This is a great place for a cosy night out. On the dessert menu was a chocolate ginger lime cheesecake... sounds like it shouldn't work, but it does - divinely! Also, this is definitely one of the friendliest restaurants in Cumbria! **** Looked in as a lunch option this past bank holiday. We hadn't booked a table but found seating outside and were served a really good meal (beef and ale pie highly recommended). Portions are generous and good value for money. Definitely worth a visit after an amble through Coombes Wood.

What an hidden gem this place is, staying in Armathwaite as a family of 7 we called in here for an evening meal. I was honestly expecting just rustic pub grub but wow. The food is amazing, the menu is fantastic not just a standard menu and presentation is fabulous. Customer service excellent. The pub itself is old and rustic within keeping of the area but the food is something else, would recommend.

The Fox and Pheasant got us out of difficulties when we were let down elsewhere. A phone call late in the day found a very cheerful and helpful staff member who found us, and our dog, a room. It was a good size, with views over the Eden valley and well equipped. Dinner in the bar area (there is also a restaurant) was good and wholesome and breakfast next morning was superb. Smoked salmon was among the best, as was the black pudding. Staff were delightful and having never heard of Armathwaite before, we would be very happy to return!

Popped along on bank holiday Monday. It was a nice day, plenty of outdoor seating and entertainment to suit everyone. There was a children's entertainer who kept the kids happy with lots of balloon modelling. A solo singer, James, kicked off the afternoon with plenty of big hits from the 60s-90s followed by a 3 piece band into the early evening. I didn't have anything to eat but everything looked delicious that I saw. Great community pub and well supported.

What a lovely , cozy old fashioned pub and restaurant. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon so tried the Sunday roast which was absolutely fantastic. Clearly home made Yorkshire puddings and definitely none of that bisto instant gravy nonsense and the chips that we had on the evening were also homemade. A roaring open fire, friendly bar and restaurant staff and amazing food, it’s no surprise they have won awards.

The food is nice. However, the dog issue here is terrible. I have no issues with well-behaved dogs with responsible owners in pubs, but the dog owners who seem to frequent this pub are hardly responsible. It never used to be this way, but it has changed. We used to be regulars but on several occasions dogs have been off lead in the pub with staff unwilling or afraid to confront the dog owners. Regardless of how "friendly" a dog is, it should not be off lead in a pub where people are eating and staff should enforce this. I really do not want a strange dog approaching me when I'm trying to eat! On our most recent visit, a couple brought in their two huge pit bulls. The dogs were on a lead but would not settle and eventually decided to start fighting with each other. The couple were clearly struggling to control these dogs. We were very uncomfortable and did not feel safe with these dogs around. The children were also afraid of these dogs so we had to leave our meal early. The whole experience felt very rushed and unpleasant and spoiled the meal. The food is not cheap either, so you are paying good money to feel as though you are sitting in the middle of doggy daycare.

My husband and I went to celebrate my birthday. The service was very slow - we waited over half an hour for our food. I had the stuffed chicken breast which was over cooked and dry, the thin end of the breast being rock hard. The only good points were the sauce and the sausage stuffing. I asked for extra sauce when I finally caught the waitresses eye and this came as we were paying the bill. My husband had the gammon with pineapple and egg. The gammon was OK but nothing great. The mushrooms were over cooked. The fried egg was lovely but the chef had put a cold pineapple slice on top of the hot egg. We tried to order a dessert but could not get the attention of either waitress and gave up after ten minutes. I have to say that I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and we will not be returning.

The service was really slow and the meals were mediocre. The roasts looked good but my lasagne had congealed gloop on the top of it which was inedible. Also, my garlic bread was burnt. First time visit here and enjoyed our night out. A very warm and friendly pub with attentive staff. Food was classic pub food we had the lasagne, Ham egg and chips burger and a curry all was of a good standard (only complaint was the curry was not a Balti just an ordinary chicken curry) Desserts could of been better as the pavlova was just a couple of meringues with strawberry's placed on it and served in a kiddies bowl. The range of drinks were excellent and I can recommend the Dizzy Blonde Beer

Called in for coffee and a warm up in front of the open fire. Having checked out the menu we did opt for a snacket too. A good range of alcohol based beverages available. This pub is set in a beautiful rural village on the River Eden. Limited public transport is available by bus and train. The pub has its own car park located directly opposite, on the side of the road. The pub itself is very traditional in appearance both inside and out. Outdoor seating is available too. The facilities are very good, and clean. There are steps to each of the different rooms and toilets. It was exceptionally quiet on our visit which was mid week, daytime. Staff did recommend booking a table for meals towards the end of the week and at weekends.

Visited for Sunday lunch and seated in a seperate room as they were busy. Lovely room, very traditional feel to the whole place. We did have to wait a while for menus and drinks, which was understandable as they were busy, however when one of us went to enquire he was snapped at by the bar lady because she was busy and he would just have to wait, which wasnt the best customer service. However we were immediately served by the younger waitress who had been at the bar, much politer, very friendly and sorted us menus and drinks. The same girl took our order and tolerated all the questions, and the food came out really quickly, especially when it was so busy and tasted amazing, would definitely recommend eating here. The deserts the waitress brought were also lovely (we had the crumble, fudge cake and sticky toffee), if a little overpriced for the size, however thats the same at almost any restaurant right now. Food was great, Value was good and the service from the two waitresses was brill, just the bar lady who was lacking in manners

Having been here in the past was disappointed in our meal - firstly the plates that the meal was served on were stone cold, which made the food become cool very quickly, and also the portion size was very small compared to how it had been in the past. The vegetables were nice but sadly it was again a very small portion for two…in fact we thought it was meant for one, but on enquiring was told it was for two. Usually when I have eaten here before I could never finish my meal, but not this time sadly.

On holiday we found this little gem. Popped in for a pint and a bowl of chips one lunchtime. Chips were to die for and a glorious little pub inside. Good size restaurant area. Dog friendly too! Returned for an evening meal and once again was not disappointed. The food was on point and very delicious. Very accommodating and attentive staff. If i had anything negative to say about it it was that the room we were put in was isolated and felt a bit like we were unwelcome but this could of been because there was 9 of us or because we had the dog. The other negative would be the price of a pint of Moretti £5.50 - i expect that in the South but not up North! Would I return - hell yes - lush food, lovely, friendly staff and great location!
