Mascalzone

South Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, <20£
27/08/2018: Had passed this restaurant a few times and decided to have a late lunch one day, wish I had kept walking instead. Don’t get me wrong, the food was nice but the portions were small and the prices were a bit steep. An out of town restaurant charging city centre prices !!!
21/08/2018: We stumbled across this place whilst wandering around Jesmond on a Thursday evening looking for a restaurant for dinner. I don't know the area but I would say that this was a little off the beaten track.

Di Meo's

Whitley Bay, North Tyneside
27/08/2018: We had a disagreement with our Whitley Bay friends about Di Meo’s original ice cream so decided to arrange a taste test with their alleged original, their relatives in Seaton Delavel Arrighis. Di Meo’s wins hands down, their vanilla definitely tastes 100% like the Arrighis from the past. Arrighis has now changed into a watery less dense texture and definitely not as tasty. How can this happen?
26/08/2018: The best Ice cream ever. It reversed the poor experience I had at the curry restaurant. Lovely place and defo worth a visit

17/08/2018: Visited mid August with in-laws and wifey....not only were we really well looked after....but the food.....THE FOOD.
16/08/2018: A simply fabulous lunch today and the welcome and service was excellent. The kedgeree was delicious, all portions were large and according to my partner the seafood stew was beautiful. If you are reading this - go!! And have a look at Mick Oxley’s Gallery afterwards.

The Village Tearoom Alnmouth

Lesbury, Northumberland
13/08/2018: Popped in on a very busy afternoon but the staff quickly turned a table around for 5 of us. The cakes are lovely and a free top up of hot water in my pot of tea was a lovely touch. My friend had the quiche and salad and it looked delicious, I must have that next time. Reasonable for prices, definitely the nicest coffee shop in Alnmouth.
13/08/2018: Stopped for morning coffee - walking distance of Alnmouth Station. Good strong coffee, very nice staff, everyone else's food looked delicious!

Bistro 23

Lesbury, Northumberland
06/08/2018: We ate at Bistro 23 twice during our holiday and were not disappointed on either occasion. The seafood night was exceptional with fresh lobster caught locally at Boulmer. The menu choices are not extensive but what is on offer is of high quality. The service was friendly and helpful. It was fully booked both evenings we dined there.
05/08/2018: We have visited Bistro 23 many times before and I have written at least two previous reviews on here about it - my last one was a little lukewarm as, though we had a pleasant evening, the food on that occasion was not quite up to the standard we had expected based on our previous visits. It is a mark of the restaurant's quality that we returned - it is such a friendly place, with a lovely atmosphere - a cosy, beautiful room with lovely paintings of local scenes on the walls. You just feel nurtured and happy in there, and the food last time was good enough. This time, however, it was back up there with the best we've eaten in Northumberland. My next comment is going to undermine everything I've just said - I can't remember everything we ate as it was more than a week ago and I have been doing a lot of Open University study since which has used up my mental energy! However, I know that we were both very impressed and more than satisfied by the food we ate. I do remember that I had a mozzarella, avocado and tomato salad for a starter which was lovely (though seemed a tad mean on the avocado and mozzarella and over-generous on the lettuce - which was that tough sort that I personally don't like - maybe lamb's lettuce or baby chard or some such would have been better - but such is life). I don't remember my main course but I remember thinking it was lovely - it had a lovely red wine sauce so was probably lamb. Hubby had pork in a calvados sauce which he said was delicious (I tasted a bit and it was). But, despite my senior-moment brain faling to recall the entire meal, what I really want to say here that I completely take back my former criticism of the almond meringue dessert. I had said previously that it was hard and overly dry and tasted shop-bought, but I decided to give it another go this time - and, you know what? It was fantastic! It tasted more of banana than almond, which is fine by me, and it was unusual having it with banana and toffee sauce as opposed to the usual summer fruits pavlova thing you often get (which I'm not knocking!). I love meringues and eat them at any opportunity, including making them often at home, and so I think I know whereof I speak when it comes to meringue - this was one of the best I've had, and definitely as good as I've made at home. I really, really enjoyed the dessert. I will be back, for that alone! And I completely take back my suggestion in my last review that they ought to remove the meringue from the menu. Hubby had lemon posset which he greatly enjoyed. Nice bread, jug of water with lemon and ice, clean tablecloths and attentive service - excellent lighting. A tad pricey but same as other restaurants in area. We parked in car park above beach but as it was July we could walk there without the aid of a torch this time (our last visit was in November), so overall only good things to say. Thanks to the restaurateurs for giving us a lovely evening.

The Raby Hunt Restaurant

Heighington and Coniscliffe, Darlington
02/09/2018: Absolutely mind-blowing food. It is worth every penny, especially if you fancy the Kitchen Table experience where you can watch the chefs at work. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is considering a visit. You wont be disappointed.
27/08/2018: Wonderfully crafted food and excellent service for Dinner. B and B overpriced, as room was fine but nothing special. Same comment applies for breakfast.

Glady's Vintage Tea Room

Seaton, Hartlepool
19/08/2018: me and my friend went to gladys yesterday for lunch we only had sandwiches but the food was good staff were very helpful access is a probelm with 2 steps in but staff will help you so thats a plus also they have a disabled toilet so thats covered as well prices are about what you would pay elsewhere
19/08/2018: Inspired by her childhood memories of sandwich and cake teas at the home of her late Nana Gladys, owner Jackie was inspired to open a tea room set in the war time era of the late 40’s. Situated just off the seafront at Seaton Carew the tea room and toilet are filled with 1940s memorabilia. Sideboards are filled with trinkets, knick knacks and mis-matched crockery, uniforms, caps, hats, 1940’s & war time posters are hung on walls. Rows of Union Flag bunting is hung from the ceiling, and music and songs from the 40’s plays softly in the background with hits by the likes of favourites Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, The Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller and other swing music.

Low Lights Tavern

Tynemouth, North Tyneside
28/08/2018: There was about 12 of us who came for their famous pies and we weren’t disappointed. Proper home made pies some had mash some had chips and you also get mushy peas too. They also have a specials bored and do a few other meals if you don’t fancy a pie.
27/08/2018: What a cracking little pub this is. It has everything anyone could ask for. It’s the oldest pub in Shields, over 400 years. Steeped in history but also has the most amazing pies. The food is great, the staff are great, it has great beer. What more can I say. Love it, love it, love it. I would recommend it to anyone

Shikara

Whitley Bay, North Tyneside
27/08/2018: A family party of six went to celebrate my birthday. Had a lovely table upstairs beside the big window and glittering chandelier. The staff had decorated the table with a Birthday balooon and table decorations. We had the six course special for £13.99 and it was fantastic. Lovely food and great portions. The staff were friendly and efficient. At the end of the meal they brought me an ice cream cake with a huge candle and sang Happy Birthday. They rounded off the night by bringing us all complimentary shots.
21/08/2018: Food was fantastic, starters, main course and side dishes all exemplary. Slightly off the grid dishes.

Simbla Indian Resturant

Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne
16/08/2018: Have visited Simla on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed. Booked a table for a Sunday evening and glad we did so as restaurant was fairly busy on arrival. We had a poppadom bowl while perusing the menu which came with a trio of dips. Starters consisted of trio of chicken tikka, cripsy pakora and paneer garlic chili pepper. Mains were two chicken biryani and Goan fish curry. We ordered two tandoori roti to share. All food was delicious. First time for for Goan fish curry which was fairly spicy but not overpowering and would definitely order again. Service was excellent and staff are always very well mannered. Thank you Simla for another great meal.
14/08/2018: Found this restaurant through Trip Advisor and wasn't disappointed. 5 guys up for the Newcastle v Spurs game and this was the perfect place to eat. Great service and everyone was delighted with their food. It's slightly on the expensive side but the quality makes it worth it and we would visit again. I'd recommend booking as it's very busy. Thank you!

28/08/2018: Nice and friendly, food cooked fresh to order. Only small inside. Prices reasonable and good wines. I had beef sliced in peppercorn sauce chips and rice. Not heavy or too rich. I would go back for sure.

St Aidans Restaurant

Bamburgh, Northumberland
30/08/2018: I had high hopes for St Aidan Bistro after I had seen the rating on Trip Advisor. I thought the location was lovely and I really liked the small bar area where you are seated to make choices, it has a lovely view of the beach. The service was great. Unfortunately, I thought that the vegetarian option lacked imagination. The choice of goats cheese gnocci with tomato and rocket felt a bit like it was added to the menu as an after-thought (an expensive one at that - £14!). It seemed like they were just going through the motions of offering a dish suitable for vegetarians rather than thinking of something interesting, unusual and delicious for the vegetarians to enjoy. I love eating and have had some amazing vegetarian eating experiences in restaurants and I really feel that this restaurant has the potential to offer that and that it is really missing a trick. It's such a shame to offer something that I could produce easily at home rather than showing off the obvious skills of the chef with something more innovative.
20/08/2018: Five of us, ( two adults, three 'children': 20, 18 & 14) visited last Thursday evening and enjoyed a truly delicious meal. Everything we ordered was fresh, well presented and delicious. Service was good. Views of sunset over Bamburgh castle were amazing. It isn't cheap but as we only ate out once we felt it was well worth it.
