Really enjoyed the experience.Pleasantly surprised by the covid measures on way in.Made to feel very welcome.This is probably the smallest restaurant I've ever been to, but the food and service were excellent. If ever back in Darlington will definitely go back.Highly recommended.

I highly recommend visiting Viraj or ordering a takeaway. The food is absolutely delicious!!! My favourite dish is Chicken Jalfrezi, and I have tried numerous Indian restaurants in Darlington, and this is by far the best I have ever tried. The sauce was full of flavor and the Chicken was succulent, tender & cooked to perfection. Rices, Naan bread, Onion Bhaji’s, everything was just devine. The restaurant was warm and welcoming and all of the staff were really friendly (big shout out to Joanne and Joynul who are so lovely and go above and beyond to accommodate) & the service is excellent. If you have not yet visited Viraj or tasted the food, you are missing out!!

I wouldn’t normally leave reviews, even for a bad meal because any restaurant can have a bad dish go out from time to time. However, ordered food tonight with friends over, the food was over 30 minutes late, not the end of the world. Called them, they said they would get it to us as soon as they can, it arrived 15 minutes later. The orders wrong… again, not the end of the world, it happens from time to time. So they send someone out again with the right food.Start eating the food, bad, shockingly bad. Actually inedible. The tikka masala left a pool of water on the plate and the rest of the sauce curdled into a pile. The bhajis where so dry that when you put your fork in them they crumbled all over the plate, tough as old boots.Called the restaurant, he said it was the owner, and that phone call was the worst part of the whole experience. (Which is the only reason I choose to review my experience.)Said it must be our fault, there must have already been water on the plate... asked me to send a picture to him, okay... I did, made no difference... I've put the picture below. To be honest, he couldn’t care less, he said he wouldn’t refund the meal, was arrogant, cocky, condescending, the call was a real shame.My advice is, order from the Star of Bangal, the food is nicer, it comes on time and the staff there are nice.

The Peshwari Naan was heavenly, just the right amount of rasins and cream, The Lamb Balti with Spinach, was a special order and well enjoyed by all.

Fantastic food cooked to a very high standard sublime flavours and exceptional quality one of the best Asian meals I have ever eaten . The service friendly and attentive would highly recommend Viraj must be one of the best restaurants in the North East .

The staff have been really nice, nice decor but the food…..the food is something else!! Would highly recommend the chicken tikka naga and keema rice. My wife and I tried Viraj for the first time at the weekend and it was superb, we had poppadums and pickles to start which were great, really fresh (I believe that the quality of poppadums is a good indicator of the type of food you will get), then we had a lamb bhuna and lamb pathia, both of which were excellent. Fresh succulent lamb and fresh ingredients throughout the dish, really lovely.The only thing that could be improved is the decor and layout of the restaurant (if you had bigger premises you would fill it, no doubt about that!!), but please dont take that away from the cleanliness of the resturant and the quality of service and food, it was all great

First time trying Viraj Restaurant. Definitely won't be the last ..Chicken Tikka Balti, Keema Rice, Bombay Aloo. Food so tasty & full of flavour. The best bombay potatoes I've had 😋 will be back! 5*

Just had the best family Indian Take away we've had for ages. FRESH FRESH FRESH! The food was so fresh, aromatic and wholesome. All the flavours were delicious and not a sign of too much OIL anywhere. Really really superb meal. Thanks for caring Viraj.

It was my Mams birthday last weekend. She said she fancied an Indian takeaway and as we no longer live in Darlington we went off Trip Advisor and chose Viraj. Their website does allow you to order on line for today but didn't seem to let you order in advance so I called through to see if it was OK to book in advance. They said no problem and so I ordered the set meal for 2 for delivery at 6 o clock on Saturday.It arrived a little late at 1845 but they did throw in a complementary bottle of beer and my Mam said it was all lovely and as there was so much they spread it over 2 days. They said they will definitely order more food from Viraj in the future.

A beautiful cosy restaurant with fantastic food and awesome service that makes you feel part of the family. 10/10 recommend for any occasion. It is the best Indian in town. Cannot fault it time and time again.

Ordered four meals for a takeaway. Nothing exceptional, the lamb Nagra was extremely tough almost rubber like in texture. The others a little oily. We inherited a box of Bombay potatoes which were watery and unpleasant. Level of spice was ok and the service very good. Perhaps they had an off night but I was left very disappointed given so many high reviews.

We tried this restaurant for the first time in August after it was voted best Indian restaurant in Darlington in the local paper. It did not disappoint. Exceptional food in a small but very pleasant restaurant. Attentive staff, very COVID aware and professional - felt completely safe. Due to the restrictions we have only managed to have takeaways since and even though it’s a 20 min drive for us, it is definitely our favourite and worth the effort. Plenty of parking on the doorstep too. Cant fault this fantastic place - thank you Viraj!

Well when isolating due to the virus decided I’d treat myself and my fiancée to a Indian from Joynul. We absolutely love the food from viraj and it never fails to impress us. Fresh and very tasty food with and incredible service from Joynul and the team too!!

We normally get a takeaway which always delicious, only ever had 1 mistake which was on a large order and it was quickly resolved. We chose to sit in this time for a quite family meal, there was a lovely cosy atmosphere even with the current restrictions. Service was friendly and really personal. Will be visiting again! Thanks for a lovely night.

This was our first visit to Viraj and it certainly will not be our last, the food was absolutely beautiful, cooked to order and piping hot, brilliant friendly service from the waiter and COVID-19 measures all in place as they should be. If you haven’t already been please give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

Having had takeaway from this restaurant a few times I was keen to try the "full" experience. It doesn't disappoint, the starters menu is short and comprised of dishes which have long been stalwarts of Indian and Bangladeshi menus. However the dishes themselves are amazing: the onion bhaji is lightly cooked, well spiced and has a subtle buttery flavour. The samosas packed some mild heat plus some fragrant cardamon. From the house specials menu we picked Sabzi Sag Gosht: the lamb was tender and moist and the sauce flavoursome. Service was friendly and attentive. Drinks included Hobgoblin ale for those that find Kingfisher and Cobra a bit bland. Great restaurant, hope to visit again in the next couple of weeks.

My husband and I ate here after seeing other positive reviews online. We aren't from the area and weren't sure what to expect, but we had a wonderful experience. First and foremost, the food was excellent. In particular, the Makhony Murgh was phenomenal. The place itself is both sophisticated and cozy, and the service was also fantastic, and both Joynul and Joanne made us feel welcome and safe. We ended up staying after we finished eating to chat with them. In terms of COVID-related safety and cleanliness, it appeared to us that they were taking the regulations very seriously: the restaurant had partitions between the tables, which were sanitized before and after everyone sat down; we were asked to use hand sanitizer upon arrival, and everyone was in masks. We would absolutely return to this restaurant if we're ever around this area again.

We are never disappointed with our meal at Viraj. From the moment we arrive we are treated with a friendly welcome. Food never ever falls below the superb quality we have come to expect from Viraj. I can highly recommend this restaurant who have gone the extra mile ensure safety and comfort of their diners in our current pandemic.

My partner and I visited Viraj for the first time this evening and we were not disappointed. We had starters and a main course (Sri Lanka and Pathia) the main ingredients are locally sourced and hand selected by the chef. The quality of the curry’s is amazing. We’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommended.

First time I’ve ordered from this place and it lived up to the 5* reviews! I had the chicken Bhuna which was top notch. Chicken was perfectly cooked and the garlic naan I had was like a meal in itself!! They said that the wait would be about an hour as they were really busy on saturdays but was delivered in about half an hour! Definitely in line to be our new regular. Class.

Ordered 17:50hrs expected delivery 18:37. System said if you do not receive within 30mins of your expected delivery please contact us. Rang again 19:25 to be told it will be going out with next delivery. A complimentary bottle of peroni will be added.ARRIVED 20:05I didn't need a 330ml bottle of peroni as I already had my own beer.To have it finally arrive and need reheating isn't what I would call 5* rating.As for curry(garlic&chilli) itself...wasn't bad (once reheated) some chicken was tough. Garlic Pillau had huge amounts of garlic in and appreciated that. But why on earth is there such and excessive amount of very large onions in Indian takeaways in Darlington. Cheap way of filling the carton i believe.Overall...I most definitely won't be ordering via takeaway again and can't see why its the highest rated Indians around town. There are easily 3 better than this.

The service is excellent. The owner J is very polite and keen to ensure that you are enjoying your meal. The only thing better than the service is the FOOD! I honestly believe the chef deserves an award because the food he creates is fantastic! No Indian restaurant comes close to the quality in Viraj.

As always fast friendly service with excellent food, portion sizes are great leaving no room for complaint, I would highly recommend this restaurant for either dining in or taking away.

Top quality food, and excellent service from Joynul and the team. I wouldn’t go anywhere else for a Indian in Darlington. The food doesn’t differentiate from the first time I went when the restaurant first opened. Never had a bad meal and will continue to go to the restaurant. Since the covid measures have been put in place the restaurant is safe and still has the great vibe it had pre-covid.

Beautiful evening at Viraj! A fantastic range of wonderful curries, suitable for all dietary needs! I need to eat gluten free and everything other than the breads were GF! The service was a joy & the staff ensured that the experience was very COVID safe, but most importantly, just a great evening! Can’t recommend a better curry in Darlo!

We went to the restaurant on a Saturday night and we were the only table in there despite this it felt very private and staff were very attentive but also gave us space to be able to talk and we didn’t feel like they were constantly there listening to us. They also had plenty of precautions in place to protect staff and other diners from COVID which made me feel very safe. The food was also amazing and came quickly and was a good price. I would definitely recommend eating there or ordering a takeaway from them.

Viraj is an Indian Jewel in Darlington. The cuisine and the service is absolutely first class. The ambience and decor of this cosy restaurant is fabulous. Highly recommend a visit here, you won't be disappointed.

This is a lovely cosy Indian restaurant, we really enjoyed the food and we felt very safe and welcomed there! They made sure everyone used hand sanitiser and was appropriately distanced. The servers were really lovely and nice to chat to! They made sure we had a really nice night.

I came here with a friend. We try to go out for a curry once a month and have visited a few but this was our first trip to viraj. It was Brill, the young man who greeted us at the door was bubbly, positive and very helpful. The food was fantastic, packed with flavour and very fresh and light. I had poppadoms, onion baji and lamb pathia, the lamb was cooked to perfection. I always think the sign of a good restaurant is the attention to detail and they had it, the home made mixed pickle was gorgeous. This is the best curry I have had in Darlington......... So far.

Rang up last minute to try to book a table and due to ‘help out eat out’ was fully booked - 10mins later our phone rings and it was Viraj they’d had a cancellation!! Fantastic for us Our 3 starters and main courses were all amazing beautifully presented, large portions and full of flavour. My husband a curry connoisseur said it was the best curry he had ever had and his lamb melted in his mouth with no fat at all!As always the staff are friendly and explain dishes to help with decision making. Safety features are well established and although there are different sitting there is plenty of time to enjoy your meal. Well done & thank you Joynyl and team Viraj!

We visited for the newly offered Indian afternoon tea, and what a treat! There were 4 square sandwiches each, 2 samosas and an Indian bhaji each. There was also a selection of desserts. We chose the masala tea which was different and lovely, reminded me of a cinnamon taste. The food was delicious, the onion bhaji being my favourite! Honestly tried a few Indians around before coming across Viraj just after they opened a while ago, never had a bad one yet! Joynul and the staff are so friendly and welcoming it’s amazing! Missed them during lockdown but had a few since and it hasn’t changed! The cheese Naan breads have so much cheese in and the Chicken tikka masala is the best I’ve tasted! Food: Absolutely delicious. Every dish we ordered was lovely and bursting full of flavour! The portion sizes were perfect. Genuinely the best Tandoori Chicken Tikka I’ve ever tasted. Service: The staff were wonderful and friendly! They really contributed to a lovely atmosphere and were really attentive. You can see how this restaurant has really put the hard work and effort in to keep our dining experience safe and comfortable following government guidelines. The tables were spaced well and you could see how on the ball they are on keeping everything clean and hygienic. As for the previous review regarding someone receiving the wrong dish - my partner and I can actually attest to the staff’s response as we were on the neighbouring table and could hear the conversation. The guests refused another replacement dish and also refused the offer of a discount on the dish they claimed they received in error. They also hadn’t raised that they had received the wrong dish until they had almost finished their meal. The staff handled the situation and also came over to our table afterwards to personally apologise for the previous guest’s actions and to also ensure our evening hadn’t been affected. We felt really looked after and could see how much effort had been put in to ensure everyone was enjoying their meals.

Viraj is outstanding. Fast friendly accurate service despite the slight confusion of 5 people all talking at once. I had the fusion dish of chicken tikka balti jalfriazi which so worked. It was everything I love in a good Indian dish, depth in the layers of flavour, spice that makes your mouth tingle but doesn't quite leave you with the hiccups and plenty of it. Naan breads that were warm and fluffy, no soggy bread here. This is amongst the best Indian food over ever eaten and I cannot praise it too highly.

We ordered our curry over the phone and the customer service was second to none, the order came quickly and the food was amazing. Such fresh flavours and and delicious curry, would highly recommend this amazing place. They always go the extra mile!

Me & my husband came in for a sit down meal, all staff were wearing face masks & everything was lovely & clean. The staff are always so friendly so it’s always nice and relaxed here. We had poppadoms, pickle tray & onion bhaji to start, everything was perfect, chicken pathia, chicken rogan josh, onion rice & mushroom rice, with a garlic & cheese naan to share for our main, everything is so unbelievably fresh tasting & flavoursome. I was absolutely stuffed but couldn’t resist the new dessert menu, I ordered a cup filled with mango sorbet, delicate vanilla ice cream, a strawberry jam topped with pistachios, it was the best dessert I have had in a long time! I will definitely be reordering another dessert on my next meal at Viraj, 10 out of 10 as always

I booked a table for my boyfriend's birthday for tonight, upon arrival we received a very friendly greeting from the lovely lady, chef and owner Joynul. We were made to feel welcome straight away. The restaurant was really clean and loved the decor, which gave it a really cozy feel! For starters, we had Chicken Chaat on Puree, Chicken Tikka, Pappadoms and a pickle tray. The chicken was so tender and fresh and bursting with flavour. I love my food super spicy, so I ordered a Viraj Special which comes with king prawns, chicken and lamb with a fairly hot sauce, so I asked them if I could have a Vindaloo to Phaal hot sauce instead, and nothing was too much trouble at all. It was absolutely spot on! The cheese and garlic naan bread was just amazing, like nothing we had ever tasted before. The lovely owner even made my boyfriend a dessert for his birthday just to make it that little bit more special which was very thoughtful! If you are thinking of trying Viraj, please don't hesitate and just book now! You will not be disappointed!

Numerous times we have ordered (all different curries) and not one has been disappointing, each time has been delicious, you cannot fault the flavours. The food is absolutely amazing, the other reviews tell you that as well. However, the customer service I've never seen nor been dealt with better anywhere else. Nothing is too much trouble, genuinely the happiest and comfortable/warm service.I will not go anywhere else!!

A family birthday celebration takeaway during Lockdown was a welcome treat. This restaurant is clean, well-staffed, and the owner is friendly and professional. I really praise the welcome I received enough. Food was really tasty and well cooked. Portions are superb, and I even had a free bottle of lager thrown in. Very good and highly recommended.

Viraj is absolutely amazing. Great curry and is always hot. I especially love the king prawn dishes. The king prawns are Hugh and chunky. The customer service even the take care serive is brilliant always happy and bouncy and willing to help anytime. Would recommend this restaurant to everybody. We ordered a takeway from the restraunts website. I wasn't sure that the order had been received as there was no acknowlegement other than the request was being processed. However it arrived promptly and looked ok. We had ordered Chicken Tika masala and lamb saag.The chicken tika was ok, but very sweet! The lamb saag looked appetising but unfortunately it was tasteless! It was as though they had forgotten to add any spices or seasoning. Other than its appearance there was no taste indication that it was an Indian meal.I thought it might have been a one off issue as the reviews were very good. However, unknown to me, my son had ordered different meals from Viraj for him and his wife a few days earlier and said that the meals were so bland and tasteless they didn't get eaten.I am unsure why there is such a discrepencey in the reviews. Maybe the takeways are not as good as the retraunt meals?

The service was very good an the gentlemen that served us was very polite an friendly food was gorgeous couldn’t manage it all was very reasonable nice an relaxing place not very good if you can’t walk up some stairs tho couldn’t really find anything to fault would deffo go back again an recommend it

Wonderful family meal on Saturday. Joynul is very accommodation to dietary preferences and makes wonderful suggestions. The food is always delicious and the atmosphere is always welcoming. We don’t to any other Indians in Darlington and my mum enjoys a takeaway when visiting from afar.

We went last night for the first time with some friends after their recommendation. It was brilliant, best Indian we’ve had! The flavours were fab, the meat was very tender and portion sizes spot on! We came across this restaurant on Just Eat. We are very passionate about Indian food and the food from Viraj is the best we have had. We normally get takeaways but ate in for the first time tonight it was a very enjoyable experience. Viraj is a delightful, cosy restaurant, with a great atmosphere,fabulous food and excellent service! We paid less than £30 each for 2 drinks, starters and mains and it was worth every penny! Highly recommend and you wont be disappointed.

Visited this restaurant for the first time and was not disappointed. Tucked away in Kendrew Street this little gem offers succulent Bangladeshi dishes to suit everyone's taste including vegetarian in a cosy, intimate surrounding with helpful and attentive staff and is truly a family affair. Easy accessible parking free after 6pm and pedestrian access from the underpass on North Road. Great value for money and well worth a visit. Would highly recommend it!

Visited with a booking on a Wednesday night for the first time. The place is small but very cosy and the staff are very helpful and engaging. Surprised how busy it was and pleased we booked. Food was excellent can not fault any of it and the prices are on a par with similar restaurants.Easy to recommend this place.

Went for date night with my partner and the service and food was fantastic, it was our first time sitting in as we normally get takeaways (which are also fantastic) and we honestly couldn't fault anything... Absolutely love this place! By far my favourite Indian restaurant I've been to! The staff are so friendly and helpful, we can always guarantee we are met with a happy smiley face! The food is second to none, I actually manage to finish my plate and they always have really tasty gins to try! 1000% would recommend to anyone to try! You won't be disappointed!

I Thoroughly recommend the Speciality main dishes. We shared 6 dishes and all were tasty yummy and well presented.

Having known Joynul many years through going to restaurants he has worked at I was more than delighted to hear that he had opened his own place! If anybody knows Joynul they will understand, as Joynul always serves food to the highest standard and would not settle for anything less. It is only a small place which works in your favour as the staff couldn’t be more attentive to your needs and going the extra mile. They also never fail to make you smile! The food is always spot on, and never to little. if you have not tried this place yet then you are truly missing out & once you have been you will not go anywhere else!

Went here for Christmas Eve as tradition. Food was amazing, peshwari naan was one of THE best I’ve ever had in my life - and I’ve ate a lot of naan bread. Staff were so lovely and friendly. Had a lovely night with fab food and family. Would definitely recommend if you’re wanting a perfect night out :)

I have visited Viraj on three occasions and each time the food was excellent. On my most recent visit I ordered lamb jalfrezi which was delicious.

Found this lovely restaurant whilst visiting Darlington. The staff are so friendly and make you feel very welcome. It’s a small but intimate restaurant with an extensive menu. The food was just fantastic, proper authentic food. Flavoursome, well presented and truly delightful (the chillies are hot!!). What a gem this place is. We will be back every time we are in darlington. Give this place a try you will not be disappointed

The food was superb and we enjoyed a great evening. The only minus: the pretty owner unfortunately did not want to let us take home the tiger in the window. We will be back next year!

Great little restraunt. Not big in size but the atmosphere is lovely and the staff are so friendly, they make you feel so welcome. The food is unreal and well priced. The place has real potential to grow into one of the most well known names in the town.

Holy smokes what a place, popped in tonight for a meal. On walking in you feel like you have shut the world out lovely setting and the staff make you feel so welcome. We sat on table 1 which is nice and cozy, I went for the meat somasa and onion bargrie.. Mega worth a try. Main course rogan josh.. Just before arriving at the table we had to get off due to family being locked out staff bagged our meal up so we could take home. Enjoyed the food at home curry full of flavour and rocks your taste buds. Have to say am looking forward to going back can't wait. I would highly recommend excellent venue
