We called in at the Rocking Horse cafe for tea and cake with our new little border collie pup. We spent an hour or so chatting with Andrew the owner and he gave us some really good advice on canine behaviour and very useful training tips. The cafe is very welcoming, food is amazing and it’s great that dogs are so welcome and even get to play with the two resident collies in the large secure garden. I would highly recommend a visit for both food and help with dog training and agility skills

We found this little cafe from TripAdvisor reviews. They were not wrong! The Rocky breakfast was superb. Everything locally sourced and cooked beautifully. Avocado and poached egg stottie was very tasty too and the coffee was strong as we like it (we chose 3 shots of espresso). The owner, Andrew, and staff were really friendly and hospitable.

Some desk research brought this one up just off the A1 on our way back from Holy Island to Alnwick. The cafe/restaurant is VERY dog friendly. We borrowed one of the restaurant’s Collies so we would fit in. Everything is sourced locally and home baked or made. We had Broccoli and Stilton soups with a storied and cheese scone. We could resist the home made crumble with summer fruits. The atmosphere was lovely and there was a really plentiful choice on the menu of properly prepared, quality local produce. There is also plenty of outdoor seating in the garden to the rear. Would we go again? yes, yes, yes!

We visited this café upon the recommendation of a good friend of ours. We had an outstanding experience – fabulous food, a great environment, very welcoming owner and team, and a relaxing way to eat a fabulous all-day breakfast. This was topped off with a sumptuous slice of home-made Victoria Sandwich cake and a pot of tea. What a gem of a place this is – we will definitely be back. Thank you to Andrew and his wonderful team for such a warm and engaging welcome.

My wife and I live around 76 miles from Rock Midstead but decided it was worth the drive to see Andrew and his fantastic team on the 2nd September for afternoon tea to celebrate my wife's 71st birthday. This was our third visit since January and every time it just gets better. The food and surroundings are really great and the love they all have for all dogs (but especially for Border Collies, Andrew has 3) mean that your furry family member is treated like royalty. All the team are happy to spend time getting to speak to your dog while keeping high service levels. If you have any issues with your relationship with your dog we cannot recommend Andrew too highly for advice. We took our 6 year old Collie, Mika, with us and mentioned to Andrew we have a problem with her behavior in the car (she gets very anxious when travelling and barks a lot) and he took the time to come out to see us when we were leaving and he sat in the back of our car with her and showed us how to stop her barking within less than 5 minutes. Mika was so good on the journey home I thought we had left her behind. We are really looking forward to visiting again soon (intend to ask for further advice. PS, Andrew just phoned my wife while I have been writing to ask how we got on with the journey home, what a star.

Stumbled across the Rocking Horse on our way home from staying near Bamburgh. So glad we did and would recommend without hesitation. Food (I had the ploughmans) was excellent. Rocking horse cafe should be on top of your list for dog frendly lunch if you're in the area. We came with our 2 Cockapoos, Murphy 3 and Millie 2. So we chose to sit outside as the weather was kind to us. Millie is a rescue dog, and very reactive, so where ever we take her, it can be 'an experience'. We ordered our food and drink in between barks. I went for the poughmans, my wife had an egg mayo sandwhich, and my Mum went for a salad. Service was great and always with a smile. All of the food is of a very high standard and is home made or locally sourced. We'd have taken pictures to share if we weren't so busy keeping millie quiet...

After booking a four day break for our Triplets 21st birthdays in South Charlton I looked for places close to eat and came across The rocking horse with its good reviews and particularly dog friendly bonus to take our beautiful boxer Roxy.We decided to walk there from our accommodation just a twenty minute walk ! 2 hours later after taking a wrong turn we arrived very hungry .Andrew came to greet us at the door and was so welcoming with bin bags at the ready to sit at the benches in the garden as it was the day before indoor eating. The food was so nice , everything fresh and locally produced . We could not fault anything so much so we returned 2 days later for more! I have to say how genuinely lovely Andrew was with all the dogs it was so nice to see . A nice guy with passion in what he does and joined by a great team .

Myself and a friend arrived after a few months of wanting to try the place out, we had a cuppa each. Which was lovely, the people were lovely, however the outdoor dining area was covered in dog poo. This is not only unhygienic but extremely unpleasant for people eating and drinking, the dog poo was so close to my seat I nearly placed my bag in it!

The team running the venue are some of the nicest people you would care to meet and the venue itself was a dream of a rural retreat. The food is all locally sourced and a great deal of effort is taken to ensure it is all top quality. In addition their coffee is some of the best I've ever had. We have been coming to Northumberland for over 25 years on holiday and our only regret is that we did not find this special little place sooner. A must visit for anyone wanting too quality food and drink with lovely company and views. Oh, and they have two very lovely border collies!!!! Many thanks to the team!

I started visiting the Rocky due to it's reputation for serving the best coffee in England with exceptional service and now find myself visiting for the quality of food served which puts a lot of restaurants to shame. The lasagne is better than anything I've tried in Italian restaurants and is served with locally produced salads The staff meet and greet customers like personal friends and make you feel like you've popped round a friends house for a coffee and bite to eat.I've tried and failed to find a better cup of coffee and I have no idea what their secret is, I've heard rumours the female staff at the Rocky crush the coffee beans with their bare feet which would explain the noise coming from the cellar.Guess I'll have to investigate further.

Decided to visit the rock horse cafe with my parents following a recommendation from other family members during a week up in Northumberland. It’s safe to say the recommendation was spot on with the Stottie breakfast (with added black pudding) being a lovely mix of local ingredients to set me up for the day. Which when washed down with a nice cappuccino and accompanied by the great hospitality from the owner made for a great breakfast. Will be returning for sure when I’m next up in a few months time!

We dropped into this fabulous little cafe whilst touring Northumberland, and are so glad we did. Andrew, the owner and his charming team (not least the lovely Linda) gave us the warmest of welcomes and a special attention that we observed all the cafe’s customers benefit from - so nice to feel so welcomed at a personal level. This cafe is known for being dog-friendly (which it is for sure, as it’s canine visitors receive lots of personal attention and their own special outdoor facilities too!) but for sure it is really people-friendly too - how nice to be made to feel like ‘a name rather than a number’.On top of that the locally-sourced and home-made food is truly delicious - our lunchtime quiche & lasagne, all washed down with tasty Lindisfarne-sourced coffee really hit the spot - and the temptation of the home-baked cakes was too much for us to resist! So good was it that we decided to visit again the next day to savour their renowned (and very substantial!) breakfast stottie - which definitely lived up to expectations. If you’re in the area do be sure to call in as it’s one not to be missed!

The owner has evidently put a terrific amount of effort into this business, and it shows, he really does go the extra mile, even topping up a cappuccino. We were horribly late for our booking, and only half our party could come, but they couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. We sat in their beautiful garden and admired the wagtail on the roof, the buzzards soaring overhead, and the glorious views. Though it's only minutes from the A1, you couldn't hear the road and we could have been miles from anywhere. The garden is perfect for little ones and even has a canine agility circuit for ambitious dog-owners!The food was really local and excellent, and freshly made. I asked for a salad without cucumber, and it was clearly prepared on the spot with an eye to balance of flavours and textures.Inside it quite small, so it's worth booking if you can, but it's nice enough to be worth taking a chance if the opportunity arises and you haven't.

What a find! We really came here because we wanted Pilgrims coffee to take home, but didn’t have time to get to a Holy Island. Local honey was another attraction. What we found, only just off the main road, was a fantastic place for breakfast, coffee, lunch or just a break. There are seats in the front, in the back snug, in a conservatory, outside in the garden (ideal for kids and dogs as there are ride-on mini diggers and plenty of space to play), the loo is spotless with more cleaning products than I’ve ever seen in a cafe, and the range of cakes on offer is fabulous. The ginger flapjack is something else. This is one of those places that you really don’t want to review in case it gets too popular but it’s too good not to talk about. The owners deserve support and all credit for making their venture the best coffee stop in the North East.

The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, even ringing the local bakery who provide their bread to check for allergens. There's a selection of different food/drinks on the menu and soya milk is available as an alternative. We chose this cafe as it's dog friendly, our 4 month old minature poodle Luna has a brilliant time playing with the other dogs there and running around the dog agility course which is set up in the garden area. The best part about our visit was being able to sit in the garden area looking out over the breathtaking views of the northumberland countryside. This was a lovely, friendly place. They went out of their way to make us welcome and find us a table (on a fine day there’s lots of tables in the garden). When the food came it was beautifully presented and very tasty. Coriander in the salad was a great touch. The reason I’m not giving more stars is because we’d chosen this place as it’s flagged on here as having vegan options. They have soya milk for your tea/coffee. When I asked what vegan options there were to eat, I was offered ‘vegan bread’(?) with ham, or cheese or tuna. So I ordered a baked potato and she offered to do it with butter. I explained being a vegan meant I wouldn’t eat butter as it’s made from cows. I had jacket with beans and I asked for no coleslaw and when it came everything on my plate was vegan (I admit I was worried! but it was fine!) in fact it was delicious. So yes, there is one vegan option and you can have a lovely coffee. If you’re vegan be prepared to be specific about what should be on your plate. If you’re not vegan, the cakes look amazing and there’s a large selection to choose from, and the staff are very friendly and kind.

5* service and extremely tasty local baking! My Mother and I have enjoyed another afternoon sitting with our dogs in the beautiful garden! This is definitely our favourite destination for coffee and cake and a catch-up. You are always guaranteed a very warm welcome and whether sitting inside or out, the Rocking Horse Café has a lovely relaxed feel. We have recently launched a new holiday cottage nearby and all of our guests have enjoyed memorable trips to this 'must visit' destination and their four legged friends definitely love it too!Looking forward to our next visit, Pam Allen

We visited this quaint, cute cafe twice on a recent trip to Northumberland. I am so glad we found it! It is a hidden gem. The first time we visited we sat in the sun trap garden- the stotties are delicious and the homemade cakes are even better! The second time round was on a rainy day but it was just as good as we remembered even inside watching the rain with a hot chocolate. The food was just as good the second time round too! The staff are lovely and attentive and make you feel at home straight away. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for home cooked food that’s sourced locally with a warm welcome. Would particularly recommend the white chocolate & raspberry cake and of course the stotties. Thank you :)

Read the reviews and decided to give it a go for breakfast, we weren't disappointed. Excellent coffee to start with followed by a freshly, cooked, high quality breakfast, made from all local produce, very tasty, especially the sausages and bacon. It was as good a breakfast as we have ever had. It was busy when we were there, we were served in less than 20 minutes, which is great. Lots of attention to detail by the hosts, really can't praise them enough. We will be back.

Made a special trip whilst on holiday in Northumberland because of the very positive reviews.Unfortunately, the service was so poor and disorganised it was not a pleasant experience.I had hoped to sample the breakfast option but had so little faith in the ability of the staff that I chose coffee and cake. A simple option you would think but it was over half an hour before the order arrived along with the standard excuse of being 'very busy'. I counted 14 people in the cafe with many empty seats. However, the quality of both the coffee and the cake was good although not exceptional.

Called in today for coffee and cake which were delicious. Just as good was the great service from the friendly staff - from the minute we walked in, we were made so welcome and felt at home. Finding out they do bed and breakfast was the icing on the cake - after viewing the rooms, we’ve booked a 3 night stay for our wedding anniversary. Can’t wait

We visited whilst staying in Seahouses and wanted some breakfast/lunch. My partner had the full breakfast which was delicious, I had the absolutely incredible red pepper soup. The service was fantastic and both members of staff were so welcoming and friendly. The outside seating area is really lovely and would be especially great for dogs! One of the nicest meals out we have had, could not recommend enough.

We had breakfast at Andrews fantastic cafe and honesty, I’ve not met anyone as friendly as Andrew, the meal was brilliant and the surroundings are beautiful, the only disappointment was I didn’t manage to get back to eat there again. When we travel up again we will be staying with Andrew for sure.

We've just arrived home from a lovely stay in the apartment above the cafe. It's a lovely farm with gorgeous views and so peaceful. We loved watching the bunnies as the sun set.The accommodation is lovely, comfy and the mattress are outstanding. We all had a fabulous nights sleep. As we had our 7 year old, we opted out eating out in the evening, instead we had a picnic in the little snug from Morrisons and had a lovely evening. We went to the coast and to Alnwick Castle. This place is in an ideal location.Book. You wont be disappointed.Thank you x

Fantastic cafe. The food is exemplary, with many ingredients from local suppliers and the homemade cakes are mouthwaterin . The coffee is truly superb, from an artisan supplier on Holy Island! Choice of seating between inside, the garden or the conservatory. The staff are charming and delightful and the owner genuinely cares about every visitor. There’s a dog play area as well, and all set in lovely countryside just 5 mins from the A1. You owe it to yourself.

A must visit, what a warm welcome we got as a family. The owner and his staff are a perfect example of how hospitality should be done. Our little dog Evi also loved the trip there and was made welcome by the owners dogs. Food and coffee all locally produced and to a very high standard. The owners knowledge of the area gave us a much need guide on where to do. Will we definely be back here, thank you

It was absolutely fantastic to be back at our very favourite cafe in Northumberland today. Our first time since Andrew was able to open up again after lockdown. I have to say that customer safety was paramount throughout the cafe and outside areas. Hand gel was ready available before we went in and again inside. Felt very safe to be back in a sociable environment which I have missed doing very much. As always the food was excellent and the service second to none. I hope to visit much more now and enjoy the wonderful things this cafe has to offer. If you are in the area, do not drive by!

Just finished having the most lovely experience at Rocky! We had the best afternoon tea we’ve ever had (and we’ve tried a lot!) sat in the snug. The food was delicious, all local and homemade, using the best Northumbrian produce. The team were so friendly, and Andrew and Linda made us feel so welcome and we chatted for ages, it was lovely. We spent so long enjoying our food and coffee and never once felt rushed to leave. Could’ve spent the whole day there! What a wonderful experience at such a gorgeous location. Not to mention the lovely collies Thank you so much! We can’t wait to come back - definitely some new regulars here! Sam & Lynn x

The postal address had a Morpeth post town, even though it is close to Amble. Finding it with the aid of a satnav was essential. A lovely sunny day and the field out front was very busy. All sorts were there, a food concession was selling pizza. The beer was varied, but great. Just a pity i was driving, no carry out bright beer is available. Only in cans. Such a shame, would have loved to taken away some of their heavier beer approx 6% ABV Staff were friendly and the interior accommodation was good.

This place is a totally fantastic! Do not miss out on the 'Kipper in a Bun'. I wavered, and thought to maybe have a 'Banger in a Bun' although was so glad I went with the Kipper. Perfectly cooked Kippers, Lemon mayonnaise, in a soft white roll eaten on the beach was just divine. Wife's comments were 'That was Lush!'. Great friendly service and all locally sourced delicious produce. Even the coffee was from Holly Island! All in a free car park!
