Soooo disappointed 😞 had meals in the restaurant neumarous times and it was lovely but had a takeaway tonight & it was borderline awful ,cold skabby chips and a really watery bland curry sauce 🫤 I know how delicious the food is in the restaurant soooo upset it doesn't extend to their takeaway orders.

Terrible experience. I ordered as I walked in and stood in the queue. I find out later that the big new guy didn't order my haddock to be cooked. When it was my turn to be served I could see there was no haddock available in the usual place on the warming shelf, so I gave them more time and stood at the back waiting patiently. Then I saw the guy who walked in after me, was served his haddock, so I stepped forward to ask about mine. The two new people behind the counter just looked at each other, went red, mumbled and both made different excuses (so at least one of them wasn't accurate?) why my fish wasn't ordered by them. I politely asked for haddock to be re-ordered and said I would wait and was heading to stand again at the back of the shop. Then a young slim manageress steps forward from the back and asks the two newbies what is happening. The newbies both make different & incorrect statements of events and the manageress totally misunderstanding the situation. In defence of her errant co-workers she now thinks I'm trying to get served early. She then talks down to me in a condescending way. Acusing me of queue jumping and asking me in an exaggerated school teacher voice, in front of all the staff and lots of customers, "Have YOU, EVER, BEEN in here before?" Which was very embarrassing and concending. (Only twice a week for the past 3 yrs). The very pleasant woman serving on the next till recognises me and asks me to move over and she says she will serve me, saying "Sorry about the mistake, I saw you order as you came in earlier," she is always very nice. The two new people are still lying and making excuses to the manageress why I'm asking for haddock and there isn't any, both of them are saying different stories and neither is telling the truth. Now they are saying that I didn't even order haddock and didn't stand in the queue. A person in the queue steps forward and tells them all that he saw me in the queue several people before him, and the very pleasant woman behind the counter is also saying she saw me order the haddock, supporting what I have already said. The manageress has lost control of the situation, especially the two newbies. All this time, people are being served on the other counter and this situation has taken around 3 times longer than it usually takes. Then another customer says, that he saw me in the queue several people before him, as he collects his order and leaves the shop. The slim young manageress says something quite rude to me, and I end up leaving without any food for myself. What a mess, started as a lil storm in a tea cup, and turned into something very unpleasant . . Created by the lies of the newbies and a complete over reaction of the condescending manageress. Why not just say, "We didn't order your haddock, apologies, it will be 3 minutes". Telling lies, upon lies, just digging their hole deeper! And the manageress didn't show any managerial ability and scolded the wrong person. She didn't have a clue! 'If' the manageress understood the situation correctly, she wouldn't have made such a fuss, and there was no need for her to be rude. This inexperienced manageress needs to be very careful of those two new employees, little lies can create big problems. Hi Mike, the email address you supplied isn't working. Happy to contact you, but I don't know how.

I’ve just visited this pub for the first time. I’m gob smacked with the quality of everything, the beer and food is lovely, staff are friendly and helpful and I have to say this is probably one of the most glorious beer gardens I’ve ever been in! Cannot fault the place and will definitely be coming back

I'm sorry, cute place but omg, how vile and disappointing :( Tea luke warm, cake tasted stale and musty. Staff were uninterested and the place smelled of damp and wet dog. Lovely menu but seriously can't see how rhey can deliver what they write as it was just filthy and gross. Shame as I love my vegan food, but had better in 'normal- places. Will never return

Called in at the weekend based on recommendations from friends - really enjoyed it. Very relaxed, laid back atmosphere with welcoming staff. Music loud enough to be heard but you didn’t have to shout to make yourself heard either. Just stopped for a drink but apparently they do charcuterie boards etc. Might have one next time as we will return. Dog friendly too.

ALAMS LOUNGE Authentic Indian and Kashmiri Cuisine. 3 Hermit Lane, Higham. Barnsley S75 1PL Tel:01226 385252 Date of Visit 30th September 2024 On what must have been the wettest day of the year so far, I ventured Eastwardly to the interesting town of Barnsley south Yorkshire. Where town Planners have managed to weave their modern shopping centre with the old Sandstone architecture very successfully! Not many boarded up shops or derelict buildings. My mission on this occasion was to sample the delights of Alams Lounge on Hermit Lane. You will find this large sandstone building on the edge of a roundabout in Higham. Just outside the centre of Barnsley. Inside is a comfortable 50-seater restaurant on the ground floor, with Indian art adorning the walls and subtle lighting with a fish tank to keep you amused, makes a very comfortable experience. Its not licenced, BYOB! Here I first encountered one of the most proficient front of house managers I have ever come across in the form of Annie, a young (21 next month) Lass full of confidence and very professional Who was on the phone when I walked in, dealing with the ins and outs of a large party booking! Next the Chef Patron/Owner, of Alams Abbey, came out and introduced himself, as it was early and quiet we had a chance to converse at length about his restaurant and here was a man who was passionate about his customers and knew how to get the best out of his spice box. “Fresh is the answer” he explained, “Yes Fresh “And as an ex-chef, I could not agree more! I order from my Benchmark, Popadom’s with pickle tray. To be honest nothing out of the ordinary here. But crispy and very fresh Pop’s. Next out was the obligatory Sheekh Kebabs, two tubes of perfectly spiced rolls of minced lamb and herbs that melted in the mouth, sat on a bed of fresh crispy salad. Then the Mains of Chicken Madras with Pilau rice and a peshwari naan. This is where the word FRESH comes in, as I say this is a man who knows what his spice box is all about! Large chunks of fresh succulent chicken in a thickish spicy tomato and onion curry sauce, Here the use of fruity Fresh chillies make all the difference, the spices had been roasted to bring out their unique Flavours and believe me it was perfect. Next let’s turn to the Pilau rice, A long grain variety of Basmati rice with the addition of Cumin powder and seeds made a tasty and better Pilau rice! Now then let’s talk about the Peshwari naan, Fresh and light with a sweet filling of coconut and a drizzle of Golden Syrup on its surface. This just cuts through the heat of the madras. It’s not to everyone’s tase I admit, its sticky and a bit messy, but the efficient Annie sorted that out by producing a lemon wet wipe to clean up my fingers. Annie is embarking on a career as Cabin crew with an airline in the near future, Abbey will miss one of his best assets, but all the very best to Annie, I’m sure you will succeed! So, was it worth the long drive through a day of continuous heavy rain? And still the same on the return journey! Hell yes, there is a reason that this restaurant is number one on Trip advisors’ Indian restaurants in Barnsley. I’m not too sure about that as I have not tried any of the others! There is a small car park right opposite the restaurant. Pricing a bit heavy at £39.70 but for the quality here, is more than acceptable. I was going to give 9/10 for this establishment due to the fact they don’t do Alcohol, but No, I think it’s worth 10/10

First time back at Mahal for over 15 years when I used to work in Dodworth. It used to be s great place to eat. So disappointed with my visit last week. At first I just ordered poppadoms and a pickle tray. The poppadoms were soft. Ordered prawn puree starter, it was a large portion but wasn't like any puree I had ever had before and more like chicken in coconut soup wrapped in a fried chapati. I had a plain chicken curry with rice and garlic nan. The nan was nice, the chicken tasted nice and fresh. But the rice didn't seem right and the curry sauce tasted like it was out of a jar. Overall disappointed, probably the worst sit down curry I have ever had and I have had one most month's for the last 30 years. I would recommend the chef going to Akbars.
