First time back at Mahal for over 15 years when I used to work in Dodworth. It used to be s great place to eat. So disappointed with my visit last week. At first I just ordered poppadoms and a pickle tray. The poppadoms were soft. Ordered prawn puree starter, it was a large portion but wasn't like any puree I had ever had before and more like chicken in coconut soup wrapped in a fried chapati. I had a plain chicken curry with rice and garlic nan. The nan was nice, the chicken tasted nice and fresh. But the rice didn't seem right and the curry sauce tasted like it was out of a jar. Overall disappointed, probably the worst sit down curry I have ever had and I have had one most month's for the last 30 years. I would recommend the chef going to Akbars.

Was there for a 'networking' meeting - so a fair sized group of us for what has been a fairly regular event. Poppadums & sauces to begin with - always nice. An enjoyable starter - with a different version of the onion bhaaji and really nice chicken. As always a good selection of main dishes plus rice and good naan bread. Nothing to find fault with.

Overnight stay on a road trip to York. Read the previous reviews on TA and gave it a go. Glad we did as really, great friendly service and beautiful food. Portion sizes are good too. Nan breads are better than any we get where we live, really fresh.

This has become one of our go to places over the last year or so. The welcome is always friendly and the food is very good. It’s licensed and you can pay by card which is a bonus.

The restaurant was highly recommend by a friend. I must say this restaurant was amazing, I wish to thank the owner and the staff for being so nice and warming. I was made very welcome throughout my visit. The food was amazing with amazing taste and quality!! I was recommednd the Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Nan and rice and this did not disappoint, the tatse and portion size was fantstic and again the tase was sublime. Finally the restaurant is clean and the final bill was so reasonable, I will be going again when I stay locally on business. Thank you everyone at Curry Mahal!

Really enjoyed our meal here. The food was very tasty and the portion sizes just right. The staff were friendly, attentive and very prompt with service. We’d definitely visit again if in the area.

A busy restaurant, excellent food and very good service. £70 for 3 adults, poppadoms, starters and mains with drinks. Very quick and friendly service, food was hot and tasty. A nice evening with family. The only thing that spoils it is the parking at the rear which is limited by the co-op store to 90 mins. It puts you and the restaurant under pressure. We made our exit with 5 mins to spare but had to omit coffees. Did not affect my restaurant score as it is out of their control.

One of the best curries we have ever had and we’ve had a few. The taste is delicious, the staff are friendly, the decor nice and light and the atmosphere is peaceful. Prices are well worth a visit.

A fine evening at the Curry Mahal with good friends. The owner Ash and his staff Grace and Nas are brilliant, friendly and always ready with advice on what to try, especially "off menu" items. The atmosphere is so friendly that it was nice to sit and chill in the bar, before and after our meal. Highly recommended, I'll definitely be back.

Great staff and great service. The food is fantastic and portions big. If you like your curry spicy, go for the Bengal dish. You won’t be disappointed.

Don't get me wrong food is fine. But I phoned them to say my previous order was not a full dish....guess what ....the dish was just more than half full..

Excellent take out tonight, can see why the phone is so busy even at 6.00pm. Onion Bhaji was really good as was the nan and tikka buttered chicken. I had the shashlik which was lovely flavoured and tender chicken. Can't fault it really. Not cheap, but decent quality.

We visited on Christmas Day and was extremely satisfied with everything! The staff were prompt,courteous and very welcoming. The food was nicely presented and we were so pleased with the food - it was full of exquisite Asian flavours and the freshly baked Nan bread and rice served as a fabulous compliment to the main courses. Would highly recommend a visit to this hidden gem in Dodworth, Barnsley.

So, I'm a loyal customer and I've brought family and friends here for quite a while because I really like it? Tonight, I attended with three good friends and we put £120 into the restaurant having been very happy with out meal. However, I didn't eat all my curry and so I asked if I could have it boxed up to take home (usually, it's not a problem)? In the past, they have taken it away, boxed it up and brought it back in a paper bag, not tonight. Instead, I was presented with a kit to box it up myself? Not impressed, what a shame?

Good service and we enjoyed the food. I had the chicken balti which would have been better in my opinion with less onions. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his butter chicken though.

We had a takeaway Saturday night (6pm ish) ordered 3 dishes £32 in all.My vegetable curry consisted of 3 halves of potato a few mushrooms and a stalk of cauliflower!!......... Absolute daylight robbery... I bet the chef must be laughing his/her head off when dishing that out for nearly £6!Lamb Bengal was full of greasy stir fry onions and had absolutely no taste.... poorThe chicken balti was nice.

Family visit during the 50% off scheme.The staff here work extremely well and cope with a busy night very well. Very polite and happy to help. Food was delicious and we were never waiting around for long periods of time until our next course arrived.I asked for my curry to be a bit spicier and they did this for me no problems and with a smile.Only downfall was the air con was broken so it was very hot in the room we were in but thats an easy fix :) Keep up the good work guys!

Picked up our order this evening and had to wait 40 minutes before it was ready. When I got hone we had been given the wrong order. It was too late to return as younger children were waiting, it was so disappointing but not surprising as in the restaurant, I observed tension between chiefs and front of house which was not professional. One order was waiting 20 minutes before they realised and handed it to a customer and the whole organisation was not running in a professional way to deliver the best to the people who were waiting. No apologies to anyone. A real shame because we had ordered the week before and had such a lovely meal,

picked up an order yesterday and was dissapointed with the bengal curry.mixed starter was excellantand the mushroom rice and chapattis very goodher chicken tikka garlic was also very good but the lamb bengal tikka was fairly bland with little heat from the chillies and half the dish consisting of stir fried onions.the qaulity of the meat was good in all dishes.

Taken out from here a few times now, never seem to disappoint even with what's going on at the moment, thanks you guys 👍 p.s please start to deliver 😂

I enjoyed a nice meal here on what was a quite cold wet horrible Tuesday evening, the guys running were the place were very friendly and my meal was really nice.Started with obligatory poppadoms and a cold one, for starters they prepared a chickpea dish especially and it was e extremely tasty, for main I went for chicken balti, again a good, this wS enjoyed with a chick pea rice and a 2nd beer, will certainly use again, the whole meal around £28.00 with 2 drinks.

We were very well attended to by Mahi The food was good and plentiful We enjoyed our visit and would recommend this as a great place to eat

Very friendly staff, lovely food and prompt service. Satff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

My wife and I were staying at the nearby Ibis hotel and walked here from there. The dishes are pretty standard British curry staples but very tasty and not greasy at all. We had samosas and onion bhaji to start with, good size portions and tasty. For main we had the king prawn karai, really good with lots of tandoori king prawns. We also had two side dishes, saag paneer and tarka dhal. I always have tarka dhal and this was definitely one of the best I have had, really well seasoned with just the right amount of garlic. The house red was reasonably priced and very drinkable. The service was good, they are very friendly and all in all a pleasant evening.

There about 40 of us at the evening. It was a fixed menu, food was very nice and staff very attentive. A nice range of dishes was served..

Its been a while since we had a meal from here, but i must say it was a very nice meal, we had a variety of curries, all were very tasty and a further visit is guaranteed.

We are lucky to have this restaurant in walking distance of our house. The food here is delicious. The curries have loads of flavour and are not greasy. I find the portion to be more than enough and they are always happy to give me a doggy bag. It's just as good the next day.

My wife and I had an excellent meal here tonight. The food and service were top notch. We both had the salmon starter and it was superb. We then both had Mutton main courses and it was incredibly tender and tasty. The Naan bread was beautifully cooked, thin and crispy and as good as it gets. The staff were great. What can I say, cant wait to go back.

This is our local Indian and we have been going for years as a family and the food is always great and the service is always amazing. The naan breads are a particular favourite!

When we first arrived, the initial service was good but through the evening, it was patchy in places - forgotten orders and we had to go and find the staff to pay our bill. Food was ok although some was a bit over cooked. Would try this place again as it was our first trip.

I normally have a takeaway a couple of times a year with my friend and always enjoy it. We had a takeaway last week and I tried an aubergine based curry. Omg! It was fantastic. Every mouthful was gorgeous. Naan bread was fresh and tasty too. Staff very pleasant when I went to collect it.

Our favourite Indian restaurant by far! Always freshly cooked, piping hot and very tasty food....loads of interesting flavours, not "just Curry". Ash, the owner, is delightful....hard working, and very honest! The staff are friendly, attentive and polite and service is quick and efficient! The restaurant itself is comfortable and warm, but does not have the obligatory Indian background music playing continually! Just a pleasant, easy listening playlist! Never, in all the years Curry Mahal has been here, have we had a poor meal, either eating in or takeaway! We are very lucky to have a great quality restaurant such as this in our village! Oh, and prices are more than reasonable too!! We always recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly!!

Staff are rude and the service is poor. Fathers day was like carry on curry house! Waiting ages for food and drinks and not even an apology. Staff didnt even know the menu and what they served -I think they made it up as they went along.

Haven't been here in years but we were surprised by the quality of the food. The onion bhajis were really fresh and are huge. More vegetarian choices than some curry houses I've been to recently. I loved the vegetable tikka Jaipur and brought leftovers home for tea. We'll be back!

Visiting partners family in Barnsley from New Zealand and now I know what my partner complains about when back home in NZ.. the curry here is amazing!! Cod Bhuna and spinach side dishes.. no words and the pish naan *drool. Def be a regular coming back to Barnsley

Been up to the Curry Mahal a couple of times whilst staying at the nearby Holiday Inn. Great food and really friendly service. It's becoming a regular haunt of mine.

This is the second time we have been to Curry Mahal, the first time was on Christmas Eve. The food on both occasions was superb. However, last night it was quiet but we still had to wait for a table & then must have waited for 20 minutes before a drinks order was taken. I then asked for the bill & had to walk towards the bar where all of the waiters were sitting & were on their mobiles. Such a shame as the service on Christmas Eve when it was busy was excellent.

Food was spot on! Madras was the perfect level of heat! I am from down south & my local curry house does not use half the ingredients in the curry there! My prawn Madras was full to the brim with prawns! The lamb starters were nice also! I would definitely visit again

An amazing menu with an incredible choice. Welcome pub priced beer helped choose in a relaxed way. Tandoori lamb chops were fabulous with 3 good sized tasty chops, this was a real value for money choice. Both our curries were superb and large portions. This is a great curry house!

Dodworth has more places to eat than most former coal mining villages. This is the best of them. Fine curry - I’ve just eaten a quite excellent king prawn pathos - very generous portions and good service. And it’s five minutes walk from the Holiday Inn.

This is my company’s go to Indian restaurant for after work get togethers and to welcome new staff. The food is always excellent and the staff attentive when they need to be.

Recently we had a take out from this place. The portions were excellent and the price good. However, all the curry sauces tasted very similar. The only exception was the prawn pathia. The curry sauce was very tasty but instead of prawns, small shrimps were in the curry. The vegetable and meat dishes ordered were very similar in colour and taste. It does not appear that the ingredients used were special for any dish that we ordered. There was a very extensive list of chicken tikka dishes. We tried a few and there was very little difference between them. The restaurant has been in business for a long time so presumably the locals like the food. So the taste has likely been tailored to suit local tastes. However, if you are a true lover of Indian cuisine, then give this place a miss. In spite of the good service.

Came here as staying at nearby holiday inn

We decided to try this place after not visiting for such a long time. (We don't live in Dodworth) we were shown to our table, ordred drinks, a starter and a main course each. The drinks tasted very bland, pint of lager and a red wine. My popadom was stale and not crispy at all. We were sharing a mixed kebab starter, the shami kebab was rock hard a tasted odd, obviously too long in the microwave, the onion bhaghee was also rock hard but the flavor was better and the sheek kebab was no better, after a small taste of each we decided we couldn't eat anymore, it was awful. We got up, offered to pay for what we'd had, they charged us for the drinks that we didn't even drink and left. I think it's safe to say we won't be going again.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food at Curry Mahal, it was absolutely lovely, however, the atmosphere is a bit lacking. The restaurant could do with a bit of a make-over so that it would feel more intimate when it's quite. I'm sure it wouldn't take a lot to add a few dividers between some of the tables and maybe paint the accent walls in a darker colour.

Excellent selection on the menu, clearly set out. Polite and unhurried service despite being busy - all questions answered well. When the food arrived it was excellent with generous portion sizes - we will return!

Hadn't been here for a while so thought we'd go for dinner one evening. It was very quiet, so lacked any atmosphere, and the other diners seemed to have some kind of offer which isn't usually a very good sign.

This is my favourite Indian restaurant and our go-to place for a meal out.

The paneer masala & peshwari naan are my favourites! The service was great, the staff were very accommodating! Will definitely be back.

Just had a takeaway . Disgusting. Lamb Darjeeling, I think they forgot to put the lamb in. My husband had chicken tikka masala. Never seen a colour like it. Absolutely vile. It’s all in the bin. So much for Saturday night treat.

Haven't ordered from Curry Mahal for a long time and now can remember why. It never was brilliant but gave it another try last night. Placed an order for four people and although the rice was okay and two of the curries were okay the...

We visited here on friday night and although it was busy we weren't disappointed - the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was lovely and fresh. Portion sizes were good and we were able to take anything we wanted to home with us....

Lovely dinner at this restaurant. Curry just right and garlic naan really nice. One of the better curries I’ve had which means a lot as I live in a town that nearly has a curry place on every corner.

Food was OK. Not the greatest I have had. It wasn't as spicy as I was expecting. But I am not going to say it was terrible. If you want a basic Indian then this is it.

Mi hija pidió pollo ajo que era horrible y no lo que pedimos. Pedí pollo tandoori tikka y llegó con un montón de pollo. Las porciones eran enormes, lo cual es bueno para el precio que pagas, pero demasiado para mí para comer. La decoración podría hacer con un poco de renovación. Dodworth as 2 Indian restaurants and Curry Mahal is the best and with reasonable prices make it a very popular with locals but believe me even if your not local give this restaurant a try you will not be disappointed. You can also have a take away if want to eat delicious Indian food at home.

Dined here a couple of times; always found the food to be of a reasonable standard and the staff to be fairly friendly. On this occasion I paid merely a flying visit to pick up a takeaway. Or at least it should have been a flying visit.... Turned up 20 minutes after placing the order as instructed by the gentlemen on the phone and still ended up being stood there waiting for half an hour. As I waited I took the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and make some casual observations. Kingfisher the tap beer of choice, with a selection of bottled beers also available. The décor in this place is somewhat reminiscent of a common area in an old folks home, dated and rather uninspiring. There is ample lighting but I feel this probably works to the disadvantage of your average Dodworth diner out for a meal with the missus. Firstly, due to the fact that it makes for a less 'romantic' ambiance, and secondly because it causes the face to be fully exposed. The clientele were of a markedly uncultured nature and I found myself wondering as to the level of expectation driven quality that could be maintained here. After being stood for what felt like an eternity and with a head full of negative thoughts, I collected my food.Upon arriving at my sister's house with the takeaway, we emptied the brown bags and prepared our plates. I had ordered a Chicken Pathia, with pilau rice and a naan. I was delighted to find that we had also received some complimentary salad and mint yoghurt to garnish our meals. I had quiet admiration for the amount of food which was piled onto my plate (these boys do not mess about when it comes to portion size) and began to feel as though this might not be a bad Saturday night after all. I tucked in. There was something there... A sweet and sour flavour as advertised and enough heat to keep me interested. After the first few mouthfuls though, it all got a bit dull. There was plenty of chicken, which I was grateful for, though it was a bit stringy in places. The naan and rice did their job but fell short of being spectacular. All in all a rather average meal that filled a spot.

Definitely would nor recommend this restaurant to anyone! Can honestly say Asda takeaway Indians have more substance and flavor! Could have saved ourselves £50 and eaten at home.Curry tasted like the sizzling pan it was served in, although the meat tasty looking (chicken) if was bland and tasteless. I asked for the curry to be vindaloo hot......it had no kick at all to it. Was extremely disappointed!Main points are:Tasteless foods that aren't made as requestedDishes very greasyCutlery and plates etc dated and wornStaff too busy on their iPhones or nipping outside for a cigarette to clear tables after each round - then coming over to table stinking of cigs!! Why would high chairs be stored in the toilet?? Wow im so glad I haven't had any of my little ones eating there.A real disappointment. We won't be back and will not be recommending.

A group of us with kids visited on NYE, the place was packed so glad we booked. The service and food was first class, we are regular visitors and Ash and the team do a great job...long may it continue.

I used to visit curry Mahal every week when I lived in Barnsley, 8 years ago. I was delighted the food is still outstanding still the same staff I won't leave it so long for my next visit.

For hands down the worst curry I've ever had. My dish was cold, tasteless and lacked any substance. My side dishes were burnt. Yuk!!

Got a take away from here the other day. This is not our normal Indian takeaway however we thought we would try something different. The food was amazing and so much more flavoursome compared to our regular!! I would highly recommend!

i dont eat anything spicy but all my friends love curry we came he for a meal i only got a korma and oinion barjis and a funny nanbread have to say i really enjoyed it was really nice

We have been going to curry Mahal for a number of years for Takeaway.The food as been excellent. But the past couple of times the curry sauce has been dark and bland.And both the chicken and lamb curry taste the same.

I took my partner and her daughter for a meal she had chicken Korma when she cut into it the chicken was raw inside they did change it but I would never go back.

I had hoped to find some authentic Indian curry. What I found was a pretty ordinary food, which can barely pass as Indian/Bangladeshi curry. The Nan bread was also at best just about edible.

This has got to be one of the best Indian restaurants I have visited.The food was excellent, and the staff very friendly. Five of us visited last Wednesday and this Monday. We were all very very satisfied. Really recommend this one!!

Delivered on a sizzling plate. This was moist tender and delicious. Cooked beautifully well presented and a generous portion. The salad was a little disappointing but the sauce was amazing complement to the chicken and lamb and king prawn. Very reasonably priced. Would recommend highly!

Meal of average quality. Pickles with popadoms rather meagre and butter chicken tikka a rather off putting pink colour. Tiger beer very expensive at £6 a pint. Service good.

Visited on a Sunday night and it was very quiet. Did pass on a Friday and it was busy though. Round onion bajis which I always prefer to the flat ones and chicken patia was our order. Both nice if somewhat spicier than what we're used to. The vegetable pilau rice and plain nan were excellent. Prices reasonable and Kingfisher on draught. Definitely worth a visit.

My partner & I have discovered this place which is an absolute gem. Every meal we have is beautifully cooked & full of meat or king prawns. Our favourites are Tandoori mixed balti and king prawn mosala with boiled egg. The naan breads and rices are all top quality too.Highly recommended and by far the nicest Indian Restaurant in the Barnsley area

A first rate meal at Curry Mahal tonight. We had not booked so decided to try early. This was a great decision as by 7 o'clock the restaurant was buzzing. Excellent service provided faultless food. Portions were 'healthy' so should probably have shared rice. The flavours of the curries were delicious and, the fresh out of the oven, naan breads were some of the best we have eaten. What a pity we live a hundred miles away:(Recommended highly.

Absolutely loved this place. Starters were the best I've ever had in am Indian restaurant and the mains were delicious. Very generous portions.Atmosphere was nice, staff were polite and friendly.My only gripe - and it has nothing to do with the food - is that there is very limited parking available. But overall excellent and I can't wait to go back

Can't really fault this place apart from the interior which is a little basic, that aside, great food, attentive staff and good value. Also seems leagues ahead of its nearest competitor, dil raj just down the road. Will definitely go again.

Food was absolutely amazing. Swift service and really tasty food. Portions are absolutely huge so you want to share a rice or naan with someone else

Went in early on a thursday night; first time in 12 months as we were in the area.Restaurant was very quiet with only one other table, but lots of take aways going out.Have to say this was the best curry i have had in ages, everything was fresh and tasted fantastic.

Visited here after many years of abstinence in favour of another local curry house. The food was excellent and much better than we had been getting for many years around the corner (locals will know which other curry house I am referring to). Will definitely visit again. Great staff and very welcoming.

Popped in this evening first impressions were very good with the starters and service staff were polite and attentive. Very well decorated loads of parking in a neighbouring supermarket.The main meal was ok nice rice and ban bread.i had chicken karai which was ok but very little taste I'm afraid. The chicken I felt was maybe soaked in water to make it swell so not overly impressed with that. I may return if ever in the area generally ok but have had better. Well done tho on other aspects of our visit
