Excellent fish and chip shop, top quality fish, pies and chips. There sometimes can be a Queue but the friendly staff are quick. Not overpriced and weather permitting there is seating outside, scrupulously clean, I can fully recommend this shop

Terrible experience. I ordered as I walked in and stood in the queue. I find out later that the big new guy didn't order my haddock to be cooked. When it was my turn to be served I could see there was no haddock available in the usual place on the warming shelf, so I gave them more time and stood at the back waiting patiently. Then I saw the guy who walked in after me, was served his haddock, so I stepped forward to ask about mine. The two new people behind the counter just looked at each other, went red, mumbled and both made different excuses (so at least one of them wasn't accurate?) why my fish wasn't ordered by them. I politely asked for haddock to be re-ordered and said I would wait and was heading to stand again at the back of the shop. Then a young slim manageress steps forward from the back and asks the two newbies what is happening. The newbies both make different & incorrect statements of events and the manageress totally misunderstanding the situation. In defence of her errant co-workers she now thinks I'm trying to get served early. She then talks down to me in a condescending way. Acusing me of queue jumping and asking me in an exaggerated school teacher voice, in front of all the staff and lots of customers, "Have YOU, EVER, BEEN in here before?" Which was very embarrassing and condescending. (Only twice a week for the past 3 yrs). The very pleasant woman serving on the next till recognises me and asks me to move over and she says she will serve me, saying "Sorry about the mistake, I saw you order as you came in earlier," she is always very nice. The two new people are still lying and making excuses to the manageress why I'm asking for haddock and there isn't any, both of them are saying different stories and neither is telling the truth. Now they are saying that I didn't even order haddock and didn't stand in the queue. A person in the queue steps forward and tells them all that he saw me in the queue several people before him, and the very pleasant woman behind the counter is also saying she saw me order the haddock, supporting what I have already said. The manageress has lost control of the situation, especially the two newbies. All this time, people are being served on the other counter and this situation has taken around 3 times longer than it usually takes. Then another customer says, that he saw me in the queue several people before him, as he collects his order and leaves the shop. The slim young manageress says something quite rude to me, and I end up leaving without any food for myself. What a mess, started as a lil storm in a tea cup, and turned into something very unpleasant . . Created by the lies of the newbies and a complete over reaction of the condescending manageress. Why not just say, "We didn't order your haddock, apologies, it will be 3 minutes". Telling lies, upon lies, just digging their hole deeper! And the manageress didn't show any managerial ability and scolded the wrong person. She didn't have a clue! 'If' the manageress understood the situation correctly, she wouldn't have made such a fuss, and there was no need for her to be rude. This inexperienced manageress needs to be very careful of those two new employees, little lies can create big problems. Hi Mike, the email address you supplied isn't working. First time ordering from Shaws due to what appears to be wonderful reviews online and obviously a very busy shop. Extremely disappointed, battered sausage was simply quite vile and soggy, large fish- however came very small and not very nice, chips very underwhelming tasteless and beans were freezing cold, curry was ok. Majority went in the bin sadly.

Unfortunately the cod was overdone, not up to their usual standard. It's definitely hit and miss with their fish

2 stars I’ve rated for this time, last time was in January and they were beautiful. We are from Sheffield so don’t always go there. Last night the chippy smelt lovely outside, the chippy sausage is award winning and it was beautiful the sausage however it was greasy and the chips were very greasy. On our way home I said I felt sick and mum and friend said the same. Soon as I got back in the house I was sick but it was just thick yellow bile. The grease I don’t think I can have those again. Service were brilliant though, quick and professional. Sorry the food wasn’t right this time.

I tried cod and chips here 2 months ago and I've been dreaming about them ever since, I drove up 5.5 hours from London and the first meal I wanted was cod and chips from here!! The Irish curry sauce is gorgeous too. Best fish and chips around - I wish I lived closer. The staff were lovely and friendly too. The queue was out of the door when I arrived, but it moves fast and totally worth the wait.

Used to like coming here. I ordered regular fish and chips, and large chips. When we opened them it looked like we'd been given child portions of both. Not happy Shaws, will not be returning.

Great chippy. Both the fish and chips were delicious. I had the cod bites and I found them much more convenient than a whole fish. It is often busy but I think this just reflects the high quality.

Love this place. Some recent menu changes since I last came but as goodnas ever. Always warm atmosphere. Kind staffs. Expressed a preference towards card over cash which I found odd. Thankfully they DO still accept cash though or I'd have been up the creek

Edited after a terrible response from shaws Food excellent but the service is very poor they use just eat to out reach the business which is fair enough but as soon as there a order error they literally stad accusing each other of who's in the wrong ultimately I buy food from you the fact that you choose to use just driver instead of paying your own is not my problem. I won't be using just eat or this shop again simple robbed out of £32 I only started getting high rate when I was told to deal with just eat as it's not your problem..... you guys use just eat so you can avoid paying a driver you chose them instead of paying a full time driver so you need to deal with problems as your have instructed just eat they collect and deliver your food. The fact that you just palm it off back to just eat is a joke. Just eat can't remake my order can they Other restaurants I've dealt with previously are happy to re make a order send it out agian when a driver issue occurs and then they sort with just eat but not at shaws chip shop. Let's hope no little old lady ends up get a wrong order because shaws delivery problem and process because let's face it ITS NOT YOUR PROBLEM

Really great little chippy. Reasonable prices, good size portions and quality fish. Giving the name of the boat and where the days fish was caught was a really nice touch too.

Gone right down in my estimations fish bites were rubbery (so bad we thought it was chicken ) chips were hard Gravy was ok but cold only good thing was the steak pie which was packed with meat Shame we went out of our way to get there wont go back

Only one person serving at the time when there, only 2 of us waiting to get served. The person was in the process of sorting out 2 orders that had been called in, one of these was a large order, making the wait a lot longer than it should have been. Other persons within the shop, however they did not help the person serving. Not the best service / fish and chips.

Probably the best fish and chips in the North. We live in Scarborough, which is famed for good fish and chips, but none of them can hold a candle to Shaw's.

I arrived at 19.45pm ( closes at 8pm) I ordered fish chips peas to take out “ no peas left” at 19.45! ,had a decent wait as they had to put fish in the fryer , fair enough,this woman came in at 19.55 to be told “ no fish or peas left”! My order was being processed and yet again the young server forgot my salt and vinegar 🤦🏻 which I told her, loads of young staff with headsets on ? Unfortunately not loads of peas or fish!! much better imo when it was on Station Road now imo it seems the customer doesn’t come first , poor customer service at best ! I will avoid in future!!

I had a Cod & chips meal and a Chicken strips with chips (in separate visits) from here both were brilliant. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

I used their website for a click and collect order. I used a special offer, haddock and chips £8.95. The fish was huge! Absolutely DELICIOUS! Also, I'm allergic to maize and corn so it was really nice to have fish in batter maize-free! Mushy peas were a bit too runny, so take note. The sachets of Heinz tomato ketchup were great too. If I'm ever in the area, I'll be back. My order was ready as soon as I walked in too! There was a big crowd too, definitely popular and not surprised why. Definitely 5 stars! I found this through Google maps and reviews.

Ordered online and the cod was tough and about the size of a fish finger .Wondered if it was because I ordered online and the fish was stood in tje oven for a while but it was very small and could have been a cod bite.

I’ve had meals from here often and they have been fabulous but today I was so disappointed. Large chips were like a child’s portion and the fish was like rubber. The meal was also luxe warm. Sorry but I will not be ordering at this time ever again. It seemed to me that they had been in situ for a long time

I spent 15 minutes in a queue waiting my turn to be served. Just when it seems to be my turn a delivery driver turns up and I’m told that I’ll have to wait as they have to prioritise deliveries. Then another delivery driver turns up and takes all the fish bits which was on my own list. I wasn’t happy so walked out and vowed never to return. We now take our regular Saturday afternoon order elsewhere, rubbish service.

Had to be in Dodworth on business this week, and finished up eating here Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Had the haddock and chips on both occasions, and I can honestly say, it is the best fish and chips I've ever had in my life. The fish is large, and cooked to perfection with a crispy batter. I honestly wish this place was closer to me here in Scotland. Cannot rant and rave about this place enough

I called here for a quick bite but ended up having chips battered sausage and curry, and my fiancée had a cod box. Absolutely gorgeous, plenty of scraps too, the curry sauce was amazing, will be back again

Went today it was mixed feelings the kids meal was fine no problem I saw they did puka pies so I ordered steak puka pie when I got home I realised it wasn't a proper puka pie it was one of those cheaper one's you can get in supermarkets which are cheaper and not as good the pastry was rock hard and in these one's the meat inside is totally different to an original puka pie very disappointed

It's very popular so there is always a queue but it moves quickly. Friendly and helpful staff. Good takeaway food. Lots of specials for kids. Recommend if you are in the area.

We was disappointed on this visit, 4 fish and chips ordered. 2 fish were good inside, the other 2 were poor. The fish was not white and the batter was too much. Used to be excellent but after covid seems to have dropped standards.

The best chippy I have had in a very long time! The shop was super busy but the service was great, the staff were super friendly and my order was processed very quickly and fresh out of the fryer! The fish was lovely and fresh. Will definitely use this shop as our place to go now! Well worth the travel and extra expense.

First, my taxi driver said it was the best place to eat in Barnsley. Second, their website suggested preordering to avoid the line, and third, when the hotel staff advised going to Shaws, vice dining in the hotel restaurant, I knew I had to try it! Long line to get in and order at 1730, but line moved quickly. Great selection….I went with the cod box…10.20 for a HUGE piece of cod, with chips, beans and a cherry cola! Outstanding meal!

Probably some of the best fish and chips I’ve had in the Sheffield/Barnsley area. It’s an award winning chippy and rightly so. One large chips is usually enough to share between two. The curry sauce is proper chip shop curry sauce. Bonus points for stocking dandelion and burdock in the fridge.

We have been using Shaws for many years and considered them the best fish and chips in the area even though they are more expensive than anywhere else. The last twice we have been disappointed in the quality of the food, The sizes of the fish portions have got smaller( more batter than fish) and the chips were hard and bitty yet the prices have increased. Needless to say we will buy from elsewhere in future.

Called on the way back from Leeds, I was starving so I would have eaten anything you put in front of me. Had chips and fish bites it was great well worth the money

Called in this evening to collect some tea and after spending nearly 10 minutes In the queue (during which only one customer got a small order) whilst online orders were prioritised, I left. I did have time to look at the menu and prices and glad I did leave as can instead buy a holiday. I appreciate costs have gone up but why is a Cannon Hall Pie over £5 when they can be bought in local shops for about half that? Yes, you need to make profit but listen to other reviewers, your prices are not comparable with other local chippys and your portions are smaller and no better quality.

Would prefer to see menu when you are queuing. Not when you get to the front. As not always know what I want. And feel iv to rush my order. But apart from that lovely staff. Lovely food. And plenty of it. Thankyou

After reading positive reviews we were really looking forward to this. What a disappointment. We ordered 2.5 hours before we wanted to collect using click and collect. Massive mistake. When we arrived we were told that they had just run out of curry sauce. How can they run out of curry sauce when we have 2.5hrs notice. We requested plenty of vinegar and you could hardly taste it. The fish was extremely dry which had we had the curry sauce we wouldn’t have minded. As it would have added the moisture. We ended up binning half of our portions each. We could have gotten away with sharing one. It’s a shame but won’t be returning
