The Old Post Office in Barnsley

We visited for the first time last week, the food was really nice. Upon leaving we asked about gluten free in the hope to return at a later date with our son. Our server didn't know so asked someone else. This other member of staff informed us that your gluten free still has some gluten in it. Not sure how it can be gluten free? We then told them we wouldn't risk it as our son has coeliac disease. The staff looked at each other and said 'what's the difference isn't it the same thing'. The lack of knowledge was shocking, you would think food allergy information would be a crucial part in any training that your staff recieve. Needless to say we won't be returning with out son and advise anyone who is gluten free to take caution if chosing to eat here.

We have been for breakfast twice now and each time we have been greeted by lovely, polite and helpful staff. We can recommend the full English, eggs Benedict and breakfast butty .. the food is of a high quality, delivered piping hot to the table and the portion sizes are very generous and great value for money

Not cheap but wow those portions

Visited for the first time a couple of weeks ago, we pre-booked our table and it’s a good job we did it was quiet when we first arrived but then became busier as the night went on. Lovely atmosphere, food was incredible, portions are huge!! Staff were all very welcoming and attentive. We will be returning, definitely in the summer as the garden areas look great with plenty of space. Car park is really big and the place is very easy to find

This was a last minute decision to go here we booked online 30 minutes before arriving. The old post office is well presented inside the seating is a little tight on space. The staff were polite and pleasant, I wasn't too what to have we went for lunch I decided on the chicken burger and I was well impressed the taste and flavour to the burger was excellent. Definitely will be calling again.

Only way is to try it. In my opinion it was very very good. Top marks!

Only stopped for coffee whilst charging the car, at the end of breakfast serving. Made very welcome and next time will try to get in time for breakfast or a meal later in the day.

Went here after visiting YSP. It is just off the M1 junction 38, which is great for anyone wanting to stop off for lunch who is driving a fair distance on the motorway. The building is an attractive stone building with plenty of parking space. We noticed on the way in a large downstairs area that looked set up for a kids' party. On entering, we were greeted and shown a table. The ambience and decor were very nice. Good selection on the menu without being over fussy, we went for the fish and chips and chicken and chorizo burger. Both dishes came in good time and were very tasty, my Wife said the fish and chips were one of the best she's had. Throughout the staff were friendly and attentive. The meal and 2 drinks came to £38 so pretty good on value. Overall, it was a great experience.

Absolutely lovely food, attentive service and great atmosphere. Give yourself a real treat. Fantastic Gluten free food too, wide range of choices including sweets.

All the family went at lunchtime on Boxing day . The food was excellent , as usual . It was ,as you would expect on boxing day, very busy but the service was excellent and the food was delicious

My husband and I came to the post office on a friend's recommendation and we certainly weren't disappointed. The atmosphere the staff and the food were outstanding. We didn't expect it to be too busy as the weather is awful at the moment. But it was quite busy but not too overwhelming. The fire was roaring which was lovely when we first entered and greeted by a lovely happy lady. We were taken to our seats and swiftly served with our drinks and food order taken. The food was out of this world. My husband had the meatball starter, beef brisket and cheesecake. I had choose your own steak 8oz fillet steak and the raspberry bakewell. Everything was cooked to perfection especially my steak. It was the best steak I have ever eaten. (Medium rare more on the rare side but beautiful). The lady that severed us couldn't do enough and was extremely polite and courteous. We can't wait to come back for another meal with the family next time. Thank you so much for a wonderful evening.

Went for breakfast…pre cooked food barely warm , overcooked eggs and poor quality undercooked sausages ..very good service but wouldn’t go back for breakfast other places do it much better

Really disappointed I'm having to write this, we've had many good meals before but our last 2 visits in December have not been up to par. Went for our Christmas work dinner early December, waited ages for our food, gave benefit of doubt due to them being so busy. One ordered scallops to start which were like bullets they were so hard, another ordered a burger which was really greasy and had an unidentified fibre in it. Chef couldn't identify what it was either. As I say, gave benefit of doubt as the staff were busy and stressed. Visited again today, food quick to be served, they weren't as busy, fine. Chicken terrine starter tasted of nothing at all. Pork belly was in a wedge which looked like it had been sliced off a pie. Venison was nicely cooked but overpowered by the Berry jus. Now consider this place to be overpriced for not very nice food so we won't be coming again unfortunately. Really sorry 😞

Five of us came for the festive menu on christmas eve, as always food was excellent and all the staff worked so hard and couldnt do enough for us. Food ,staff and surroundings made for another excellent evening,,,,,thanks

Had the steak night for two. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and served by wonderful staff. Unfortunately the access for the disabled is terrible. Very steep unlit stairs and wobbly pavement. Alternatively they can eat in the rather unappealing basement.

I can't fault this place. Fantastic food, a greatly maintained site with ample parking and a lovely function room.

Haven't been for a very long time so wasn't sure what the standard would be . We had a lovely meal , there were 6 of us , 5 had pick your own steak , 1 had mixed grill , the food didn't disappoint . Everyone enjoyed their meal. The service was great and lovely atmosphere.decorated lovely for Christmas x x x the only niggle if I had one was the individual steak cooking were not exactly as requested , but yummy non the less x x x

Really disappointed with our recent visit. The service was very slow and the food wasn't up to their usual standard. We had a Sunday lunch which was only luke warm. The roasters were hard and the veg was very hard. We had desserts and ordered the apple crumble. It came with ice cream and we said we wanted custard. The girl said it came with ice cream and we should have asked for custard when we ordered but she did change it. On leaving I looked at the menu again and the apple crumble had no mention of being served with ice cream, it clearly said served with custard. I'm not sure we will be visiting again as all but one of us was disappointed with our meal and service.

We've been before and always busy and we recommend booking. There is plenty of parking and easy to find. It is not wheelchair friendly that we could see. Good drink and food selection. This is a spoil yourself place and prices on the high side. But it is very nice and we will be going back again.

Called in to charge car and thought we’d see if we could grab a table. We both ordered the turkey roast absolutely amazing. If you’re passing I’d recommend eating here. We were travelling from York to Staffordshire.

Fab place to charge your Tesla and have a coffee/Pint!

Stopped here to charge my EV (passing via the M1), intending to get a quick charge and grab a bite to eat (as it was around dinner time). The pub has a very cozy and welcoming vibe, the staff were very friendly & seated us without any booking. The wait from ordering to it arriving at the table was less than 15 minutes. The food was amazing quality. The steak and ale pie was delectable & the fish & chips perfectly cooked. Main dishes seem to average around £16, soft drinks about £3. By the time we had eaten & paid the bill, my car was fully charged and ready to go. Shall definitely be keeping this location on my radar when heading north!

Very nice pub food, went with my husband & grandparents and the staff were very accommodating, even putting the heater on so they wouldn’t get cold. We had 3 courses and all were very nice, portions are a good size and all was good quality. I would say the salmon & gnocchi dish was quite oily and could do with some vegetables as it was just all carbs and protein. The meat & fish were high quality, and the sticky toffee pudding was a real highlight, we will definitely come back.

Absolutely superb, if I could give 6 stars I would. Stumbled across this place whilst looking for a Tesla supercharger, was expecting a big old services not a lovely country pub. Food was superb, waitress amazing, nothing was too much trouble. Honestly can't recommend this place enough, if you need a charge or just fancy a decent meal, honestly look no further.

Local to us as we don't live far so have been regular for meals which have all been lovely. Had my 40th birthday party in their function room last weekend & loved it. Had an 80s fancy dress party and was able to decorate it as much as I wanted. From my initial query right through to the night communication with Lauren was easy & answered pretty quick. Had the standard buffet which was really nice & they even added on cheese & onion on sticks to go with my theme lol. I got my own DJ, music had to be slightly restricted till 9pm (for those eating in restaurant upstairs) but it wasn't an issue and no one noticed anyway. Everyone commented saying they loved the food, the venue & the staff were really friendly. Big thanks to Lauren & the team!! Highly recommend. X

There’s few places I’d recommend for Sunday Lunch but this is our favourite by far. Consistently delicious food including gorgeous homemade tasting gravy. It always feels a treat to go and we think it’s reasonably priced for the standard of food and service.

Attended a private event in the Garden Room with my family. Food was amazing, staff friendly and overall a great experience! Would definitely consider booking the room for any upcoming events. The only (tiny) negative was the price of a pint - £6.30!! Couldn't afford too many of those.

Here again for superbly cooked and tasty food with great, friendly service and very pleasant surroundings.

Came for breakfast, after waiting 45mins we were served a breakfast that had obviously been stood under a hot counter. The bacon was extremely over cooked and dry, the eggs were like rubber and the tomato and mushrooms inedible. Very disappointed unlikely to return any time soon

We've been several times for Sunday lunch. I usually go for the trio of meats, which is always tasty. I would recommend booking for Sunday lunch, as it can get busy!

The only restaurant where the main meal portions are not huge and over faced, therefore, had a lovely desert,, thank you so much, we will be back..

Four of us went in Saturday evening. Two starters. Four main meals. I had to send my pie of the day back as it was burnt and dry in parts. Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere I would go again. But would try other places first.

Had a lovely evening with friends in an amiable atmosphire. The food was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Well done steak and ale pie was full of succulent meat with a crispy pastry crust. It arrived with lovely gravey chips and fresh vegetables. Definitely worth a repeat visit. Staff were polite caring and gave a professional service.

Hi just would like to say we come here quiet a bit and tonight I was disappointed with the food I order raw to medium rump steak and it was very tuff and chewy I did point it out to one of your members of staff saying it was not the best steak and was not worth the money . I got no response back which is very disappointing I work in this industry and I no someone should have acknowledged my views.

My husband and I had our wedding reception in the Old Post Office’s Garden Room, after having a small wedding in Cornwall. We wanted an informal party with all of our friends and family and the Old Post Office was the perfect place. Since we booked the venue, the Garden Room underwent some refurbishments and looks much brighter! We had wood fired pizza throughout the night and an evening buffet later on in the evening, which everyone loved. Staff at the Old Post Office were great all throughout the night and I couldn’t recommend the venue enough for parties.

Visited the old post office last night for a family meal. Our starters arrived at the table where after having two bits out of the garlic mushrooms i had to send them back as they were cold. They brought them back out in a bowl that had been put in the microwave and warmed up ( with the bread underneath) that was now soggy!! I ate them as i wasn’t going to complain again. Coming to the main.. 2 mains came out and the other 2 5 minutes later. The steak was cold, the peppercorn sauce i could put my finger into and it did not feel warm. The onion rings were flat cold, the burger my husband ordered was cold and the chicken my dad ordered was bone dry and also cold!! We asked for a manager to come down as we were not happy after already advising our starters were cold!! No manager even came to apologise on behalf of the chef, and we cancelled the order! No drinks were offered as an apology or a conversation with the manager. we have visited here for many years now and the experience we had last night is not one we will be having again! We spent over £150 on starters and deserts and not even a sorry!! We won’t be returning again, i’m not the type of person to write a review usually but i feel like with the bad efforts from the place last night that this should make people aware! Very disappointed! Everyone has also had an upset stomach this morning from the small amount of food they did consume, very very poor from the team last night

Great Food, that is consistently good. Lovely outside space and the staff work really hard to be enthusiastic and helpful. Fair prices, measured service to accommodate multiple courses and nice experience. The garden is had a bouncy castle most sunny days and cute play area. Able to bring the dogs too. An overlooked place to eat and spend a few hours

I would definitely recommend dinner here. We decided to pop in without a reservation. It was no problem though. Staff very helpful and friendly. Food fabulous and pub nice. Would definitely go again…but just ask for a smaller portion of food 😁

Attended a wedding event here recently and it was a lovely venue, very picturesque and handily located near the M1, and had loads of parking. Staff were all really lovely and friendly, food laid was really nice, and the drinks weren’t outrageously priced. Even the toilets smelled nice. Great place, keep up the good work!.

We visited for a meal after work. The food was delicious, served with great coordination, and a smile😊 The atmosphere was comforting and cosy. All 14 of us enjoyed it very much. We are booking for Christmas😃

This place is amazing - the food was fab and the portions are large. The service was great. The venue itself is clean, spacious and has a modern country feel. I would highly recommend for any occasion. The grounds are lovely too with a small play park for the little ones and a bouncy castle to keep them entertained.

This was my first visit and all I can say I will be back. Yes little bit more pricey that some places but all I can say is well worth it best steak and ale pie I have ever had. All my friends loved the food and wasn’t a single compliant. Was excited to see table next to us order the sharing steak platter as that looked amazing as well. Cannot wait to go back x And 2 ladies seeing was excellent even though was busy.

Not sure it’s a £300 meal out for 4 people in this place , you can eat a lot better for less , not saying it’s bad but also no where near the cost . Nothing special just good pub food , disappointing a big YES .

4 of us went for Sunday Lunch - we all opted for the Sunday Roast, choice of beef, pulled pork or chicken. We all agreed the food was very tasty, the service was also very good. The only slight issue was my pork was a little lukewarm, not piping hot. Shared a couple of deserts which were very good. House wine at £20 a bottle. Worth a visit if you haven’t been for a while.

We booked using the app, which was straight forward. The service was, from the moment we walked through the door, excellent, and this was at the end of a very busy bank holiday. The food was excellent and our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and made some great suggestions. Family friendly, and much better than those chain restaurants.

If you like top restaurant food the old post office is definitely worth a visit. Friendly staff always make you feel welcome too. There’s pub food and there’s good food. Definitely not pub food and the steaks are to die for.

I visited today with a party of 6 , it's a beautiful place but disabled access is rubbish or none existence my sister is a quadraplegic amputee but has prosthetic legs , 13 steps down to the loo. Food ok but got the orders wrong . Outside space stunning but again no access to toilets for disabled Would I go again ? Unsure

We always come to the post old post office for drinks. With the sun being we decided to sit outside. I haven't eaten here before and I've heard great things but unfortunately they don't serve food outside. This is ridiculous. It wouldn't take much to bring a sandwich outside. You are loosing business and will continue to if this doesn't change. Ridiculous.

We called in when passing. It's a lovely, bright, modern and clean looking restaurant. The bangers and mash was OK but the bangers fell short. Tasteless really could do with a better supplier. Other than that we had a good experience.

I was one of 50 guests for a birthday dinner, table booked for 2pm, starters wasn't served until 3.30pm. It was stone cold so I asked for it to be warmed, which they did and that was cold too. The mains was the same, which I sent back 3 times - it came back cold 3 times! I ended up asking them to remove it from the bill as I couldn't eat it, which they agreed to do.

Great for an evening eating. We booked and had confirming e.mail. when we arrived they said they hadn't got it even though we showed them proof. They tried to put us on the smallest table pushed right up to people that were eating. I protested stood my ground and they moved us.After all that the food was fantastic. Service too.

Despite being the first to secure the venue over 12 months ago, they shockingly double-booked our event and callously refused to honor our reservation. This left us in an impossible position, scrambling to find an alternative venue at the last minute.Their initial solution was to ask the other couple to cancel their booking, which was not only unprofessional but also completely unfair to both parties involved. After we were forced to hastily search for another venue, the old post office inexplicably reversed their decision three days later, leaving us with a loss of confidence in their ability to manage such important events.Not only did this debacle result in a significant financial burden due to the difference in venue costs and losses incurred with suppliers, but their offer of £500 as compensation was insulting and did not come close to covering our expenses. Their refusal to take responsibility and adequately compensate us for the inconvenience further highlights their disregard for customer satisfaction.Overall, I would strongly caution against entrusting any important event to the old post office, as their incompetence and lack of accountability have left us deeply disappointed and out of pocket.

This is the second time I have been to the old post office on a day that isn't a Sunday and twice my meat was not cooked as requested, and had to be sent back and the same happened to the table directly to the right of us. There was a 40 minute wait which I'm suspecting was due to a function downstairs being served first. The staff did their best in the circumstances. The fries were just warm and the chunky chips were more like wedges and not crispy at all. You do an outstanding Sunday dinner which I will return for however, your normal menu I am sad to say I won't be returning for.

Food is always nice from here, particularly the steaks. Service, although pleasant, was slow and staff were just stood behind the bar twiddling their thumbs whilst we waited. It still a lovely plance to eat though and this is the first time the service hasn't been upto par.

Lovely restaurant and pleasant staff until we complained then we were ignored as they didn’t want to come back to table. Firstly I’ll say the starter was fabulous but the main course THE SHARING MEAT PLATTER at £80 was TERRIBLE!! The look of it was great we were so looking forward to eating it but wow, the rump steak was full of sinew, the chicken breast had definitely been frozen as it was difficult to cut and as dry as an old boot had to dip into the sauce to soften it. The fillet steak was awful, tasteless tough and cold. We ate the sausage and onion rings to say we’d eaten but my goodness please avoid the platter. As a chef myself and have eaten steak regularly as I’m also a butchers daughter this was by far the worse I’ve eaten. I’ve had better steaks from supermarkets!! When the waitress came to clear I told her it was awful and she just said sorry do you want dessert. After that none of the waitresses wanted to come to the table. When I asked for the bill they did knock off the wine but if I’m honest I was disappointed that the platter wasn’t refunded as we only could eat the sausage and side orders. Would we go back, I’m not really sure there was positives but don’t want a bill of £101 again in case the other mains are the same as the platter

This food is incredible. I had one of the best ribeye I've ever had. Also, get the camembert starter! I'm reluctant to advertise this too much because I want to go again and worry I won't be able to get a table if it's as popular as it deserves to be!

Called for Sunday dinner with family. Parking is plentiful and the exterior is welcoming. Sat upstairs in the well decorated dining room. The service was good (plenty of staff), food was as expected - prices as expected - no issues at all really. But personally I don't think my experience warrants a 'very good' rating - it was good but nothing to make me want to rush back. A 3.5 rating if that was an option would be fair.

Super meal at The Old Post Office, Friday 1st March. Family of 5, including mum who is 89 and wheelchair user. We were sat in the garden room as it can be accessed from the car park without steps. We were the only people in the garden room, not a problem for us as we are a chatty group, but could have been lacking in atmosphere. Service was excellent, the girls were happy and cheerful. The food was hot and delicious, thank you chef and team. Would highly recommend for your next meal out, so convenient just off junction 36 M1.

Visited today and we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Lovely atmosphere in the pub and my main meal of Chicken in a mushroom sauce was very good. My husband chose "A Trio of Sausages" which suggests 3 different types of sausage. This was very disappointing and should have read "Sausage and mash".

I visited for my brothers 40th surprise party on Saturday 24th of March and the service was fantastic. A really nice pub, and the food was delicious too.
