The Old Post Office in Barnsley

I was one of 50 guests for a birthday dinner, table booked for 2pm, starters wasn't served until 3.30pm. It was stone cold so I asked for it to be warmed, which they did and that was cold too. The mains was the same, which I sent back 3 times - it came back cold 3 times! I ended up asking them to remove it from the bill as I couldn't eat it, which they agreed to do.

Great for an evening eating. We booked and had confirming e.mail. when we arrived they said they hadn't got it even though we showed them proof. They tried to put us on the smallest table pushed right up to people that were eating. I protested stood my ground and they moved us.After all that the food was fantastic. Service too.

I am deeply disappointed and frustrated with the old post office for their handling of our wedding reception booking. Despite being the first to secure the venue over 12 months ago, they shockingly double-booked our event and callously refused to honor our reservation. This left us in an impossible position, scrambling to find an alternative venue at the last minute.Their initial solution was to ask the other couple to cancel their booking, which was not only unprofessional but also completely unfair to both parties involved. After we were forced to hastily search for another venue, the old post office inexplicably reversed their decision three days later, leaving us with a loss of confidence in their ability to manage such important events.Not only did this debacle result in a significant financial burden due to the difference in venue costs and losses incurred with suppliers, but their offer of £500 as compensation was insulting and did not come close to covering our expenses. Their refusal to take responsibility and adequately compensate us for the inconvenience further highlights their disregard for customer satisfaction.Overall, I would strongly caution against entrusting any important event to the old post office, as their incompetence and lack of accountability have left us deeply disappointed and out of pocket!

Lovely place... The garden room is lovely too... Delicious food and really nicely presented too... Highly recommend.. Weill be back soon

This is the second time I have been to the old post office on a day that isn't a Sunday and twice my meat was not cooked as requested, and had to be sent back and the same happened to the table directly to the right of us. There was a 40 minute wait which I'm suspecting was due to a function downstairs being served first. The staff did their best in the circumstances. The fries were just warm and the chunky chips were more like wedges and not crispy at all. You do an outstanding Sunday dinner which I will return for however, your normal menu I am sad to say I won't be returning for.

Food is always nice from here, particularly the steaks. Service, although pleasant, was slow and staff were just stood behind the bar twiddling their thumbs whilst we waited. It still a lovely plance to eat though and this is the first time the service hasn't been upto par.

Lovely restaurant and pleasant staff until we complained then we were ignored as they didn’t want to come back to table. Firstly I’ll say the starter was fabulous but the main course THE SHARING MEAT PLATTER at £80 was TERRIBLE!! The look of it was great we were so looking forward to eating it but wow, the rump steak was full of sinew, the chicken breast had definitely been frozen as it was difficult to cut and as dry as an old boot had to dip into the sauce to soften it. The fillet steak was awful, tasteless tough and cold. We ate the sausage and onion rings to say we’d eaten but my goodness please avoid the platter. As a chef myself and have eaten steak regularly as I’m also a butchers daughter this was by far the worse I’ve eaten. I’ve had better steaks from supermarkets!! When the waitress came to clear I told her it was awful and she just said sorry do you want dessert. After that none of the waitresses wanted to come to the table. When I asked for the bill they did knock off the wine but if I’m honest I was disappointed that the platter wasn’t refunded as we only could eat the sausage and side orders. Would we go back, I’m not really sure there was positives but don’t want a bill of £101 again in case the other mains are the same as the platter

Had a fantastic meal. Service is really good and reasonable.

This food is incredible. I had one of the best ribeye I've ever had. Also, get the camembert starter! I'm reluctant to advertise this too much because I want to go again and worry I won't be able to get a table if it's as popular as it deserves to be!

Called for Sunday dinner with family. Parking is plentiful and the exterior is welcoming. Sat upstairs in the well decorated dining room. The service was good (plenty of staff), food was as expected - prices as expected - no issues at all really. But personally I don't think my experience warrants a 'very good' rating - it was good but nothing to make me want to rush back. A 3.5 rating if that was an option would be fair.

Super meal at The Old Post Office, Friday 1st March. Family of 5, including mum who is 89 and wheelchair user. We were sat in the garden room as it can be accessed from the car park without steps. We were the only people in the garden room, not a problem for us as we are a chatty group, but could have been lacking in atmosphere. Service was excellent, the girls were happy and cheerful. The food was hot and delicious, thank you chef and team. Would highly recommend for your next meal out, so convenient just off junction 36 M1.

Visited today and we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Lovely atmosphere in the pub and my main meal of Chicken in a mushroom sauce was very good. My husband chose "A Trio of Sausages" which suggests 3 different types of sausage. This was very disappointing and should have read "Sausage and mash".

I visited for my brothers 40th surprise party on Saturday 24th of March and the service was fantastic. A really nice pub, and the food was delicious too.

First visit was brilliant as was our second visit but our third visit is memorable for the wrong reason. We arrived 15 minutes early so we got drinks and were advised we would be told when our table was ready. Waited 15 minutes after our booked time before we checked if our table was ready, no apology so very disappointed. We don't usually repeat visits once we have this sort of experience.

Had the most amazing engagement party thanks to Lindsey and her team 🤍 such a lovely and amazing setting for our loved ones and cannot recommend enough

We had a late Sunday lunch here yesterday, party of four and we thoroughly enjoyed all three courses, everything was fresh and delicious with generous portions, separate dishes of cauliflower cheese and steamed veggies and plenty of pulled pork, roast beef and chicken the three meat option is a £3 extra but worth every penny. We’ve been trying various places in the local area over the past few weeks and The Old Post Office is absolutely miles ahead of the other places we’ve tried, I honestly don’t think we need to look any further. Thanks very much and we’ll see you again soon.

Booked online for Sunday lunch. Simple to do and less hassle than phoning. The food, starters and mains were excellent and plentiful. Choice of beef pink or cooked through. Very good. No room for puddings. The service was attentive, no issues there. Will definitely visit again.

I go once a week, I know that what ever I choose it's going to be amazing. Camembert share platter for starter is to die for, steak and ale pie just the best. If you don't want to leave it to chance this is the place.

We went for New Year’s Day dinner with our family . The food was delicious, the service spot on & price reasonable. We were so impressed we booked for lunch the next day. We have visited several times since then & have never been disappointed. We will be visiting regularly to try some more of the delicious meals in the menu . The staff are really friendly & nothing is too much trouble .

I had seen this pub from the motorway and thought it would be ideal for my family with it having a playground. So on the way back from Sheffield decided to pop in and try . Only wanted a lunch time snack but not served at weekend so asked if I could just have a soup and roll and a pint. I was asked where I would be sitting and asked the girl if I could sit at the table opposite and she said yes .She took my order but was then told I couldn't sit there and told to go down the stairs into bar area . There weren't any tables , just low chairs and a 'barrel'. When the girl came and put a spoon and napkin on the barrel I said 'I cant see how I can eat my soup here' she ignored me and walked away. Half an hour later another girl brought my soup, i said to her 'I cant eat it here could I sit at a table ' she seemed to acknowledge me me but never came back, ignored again ! So I picked up my soup went up the stairs and sat at a small table with one chair at top of stairs ( so didn't take up any tables for a group or family ) and ate my soup My main grip is that I was ignored TWICE . I did see a manager on the way out and told her of my experience and she did say 'sorry' Terrible unprofessional service Mike

Had the function room for my sons wedding reception. Good size for 70 to 90 guests. Function room set out really well easy to access with facilities on one level. The food and service was excellent, decent selection of beverages prices what you would expect to pay. Large carpark, larger outside tables and seating areas includeing kid's play area. We'll run established and would recommend giving it a try.

Called for lunch without a booking and was seated immediately by welcoming staff. Prompt service for drinks and meals. Both our starters were flavoursome and we really enjoyed them. Our main meals were disappointing. My lasagne was not to my liking, it tasted of pork and sitting in a lot of oil. I was offered another meal on the check back but I declined. My husband’s pie was tasty but dry around the edges. Not sure we will return again.

I can not praise the old post office highly enough. The first impression was very good. Although it wasn't quite the weather for it, it had a nice outdoor area. When we entered the building, found it to be very well presented and cosy, homely feeling place. Spotlessly clean, the staff were attentive, helpful and polite. And the food was simply out of this world. There were six of us, having different meals, I had the steak and ale pie. I am 70, and it is one of the best meals, and experiences I have ever had, and don't say this lightly. It is a credit to the staff who work there, and the management. I will be back !!!!!

It's nice enough. Pleasant surroundings and staff. It was very warm sitting near the heating unit; I was ok as I sat slightly further from where it was actually blowing out. Not a lot of choice for vegetarians. I'm not a fan of halloumi and I figured the Mediterranean vegetables would include aubergines and courgettes, neither of which I like. So I had chunky chips with mushy peas. The chips were just ok, a bit dry.

The food was amazing and the staff were super friendly and helpful! Only one issue was that the music from the party in the function room was a little too loud but that’s just a minor issue.

I haven't been for years until today, for breakfast, was an unplanned visit, staff are genuinely lovely, plenty of choice for breakfast, food freshly cooked, very reasonably priced, will certainly plan for an evening meal here in the future.

Seven of us had a lovely time for a special birthday. The food was excellent and the staff were lovely, despite being busy.

Had both brunch and dinner here and the food is exceptional for the price would highly recommend. From when we forst entered the service was simply fantastic, drinks and food was ordered and delivered speedily. I opted for the Christmas pie which was very filling. Top marks well done team

Amazing quality food at good prices. My partner had the chicken a la creme and described it as the best meal she's ever had. I had the barnsley chop which was also fantastic. Portion sizes were surprisingly large for such good quality food, without being overwhelming. Chocolate fudge cake and a chocolate brownie with a delicious raspery sorbet finished everything off perfectly. Paid around £35 per person with two drinks each which was very good value 10/10 Highly recommended

Pleasantly surprised, it's a long long time since I was there and the changes are lovely. The reception area appeared nice and cosy but we were cold throughout our meal. The food was lovely but disappointed with the veg, not a great selection. Not a cheap meal but worth a visit if you don't mind close dining.

If you’re travelling on the M1 south of Leeds and feel hungry, this is the place the go!! Forget services, you won’t regret it. It is absolutely worth the stop!! In fact it’s worth the trip to go there!! Service was brilliant from the moment we walked in; made to feel welcome and valued customers immediately. Super friendly and homely feel and quick service too. The food was truly delicious - soup of the day to start with (winter vegetables); so good I could taste every ingredient. Lamb shank next - delicious and HUGE!! Also tried the Steak and Ale pie and again, delicious and really big portion!

Gorgeous food, really quick and efficient service, and a nice warm atmosphere. Food was well priced, drinks were a bit expensive. Worth it for the overall experience- don't let that put you off. But it would be my only area to improve on.

Xmas lunch for Ladies who lunch. Lovely meal, staff were lovely and the whole place is just welcoming and comfy.

Well seen as the missus is the morning cleaner her and she struggled to get to work because of car troubles( google has asked for this review)She rang me to ask if I could take her down to work. So really I can neither confirm nor deny wether the food or service is any good at this fine looking establishment is any good. We do plan at some point to browse over the and possibly feast on the food and the the ales they have on offer. Looking forward to seeing you all soon 😀

We've been several times for Sunday lunch. I usually go for the trio of meats, which is always tasty. I would recommend booking for Sunday lunch, as it can get busy!

Came today for a birthday meal. I recommend booking a table in the festive period as it is popular for larger parties. We ordered from the main menu and the food was delicious. The pie of the day was certainly a showstopper, steak and ale cooked to perfection and what a portion!! The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and the place was clean and neatly presented.

The food was delicious, the service was friendly, helpful, and exceptional, the only criticism I have is the main course came a bit too early, as the starter pots hadnt even been removed before they brought them, we as a group prefer around 15-20 mins in between meals, lovely place would recommend going

I have visited the Old Post Office a few times now and find the food to always be very yummy. There is a nice choice on the menu and they cater for such as myself who hasn't got a big appetite. Beautiful surroundings and professional service always. Looking forward to the next visit.

The best gluten free roast dinner I have ever had! Coeliac safe food. I have eaten the gluten free fish and chips, which were delicious, on a previous visit. Gluten free roast dinner included meat (I chose turkey), roast potatoes, mash, veg, cauliflower cheese, gravy and even Yorkshire pudding!! It was delicious and so nice to have such a variety! Staff knowledgeable and understanding.

Beautiful pub in a gorgeous setting

Called today with dogs in tow so sat outside. Went to order food and was told that they don’t serve food outside. So came away. Disappointed!

It is a beautiful property with a large outdoor area including a playground. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the restaurant and no food is served in the garden. This regulation is very unfortunate. The staff actively tried to find a solution, which really impressed us. The food was tasty, especially the chips were very tasty.

Went on a Sunday and they only had one vegetarian option which was nut roast or 'the fish', as quoted by the lady who served us. The only other option was a garlic mushrooms starter which cost £16 for one course. There were only a few tables occupied and the servers were very inattentive, we were never asked for a second round of drinks and we waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order, after we asked for their attention. Average food and do not cater for a wide range of dietary restrictions, average atmosphere and inattentive staff.

First visit and very enjoyable too. Excellent customer service from all staff. Very clean and beautifully maintained. Highly recommend.

Wow what a very busy place but the food was amazing. My daughter, hubby & myself all had steak and son in law had a burger. The food was hot, tasty and very filling. I tried the Lemon posset for desert and that was gorgeous I could have had more but didn't want to be too greedy. Would certainly recommend and will certainly be back here again soon for another meal.

First time experiencing the old post office tonight. The food was beautiful it looked appetising on the plate also, which is always a plus. I would definitely recommend anyone try if you haven't already. We will definitely be coming back in the near future.

Food was good. Had three meat sunday dinner. The Yorkshire pudding was ab massive. The service was really good too. Good meal all round as there were 5 of us. Would reccomend if your ever over that way.
