Great old fashioned pub with stone flagged floors and a lovely ambiance. Great choice of beer including two Pale Ales on draught and excellent good scampi and really crisp skin on chips. Very friendly hosts and comfortable beds for our overnight stay. I can’t comment on the cooked breakfast as I only had toast but the bread was top quality.

Just about coming to the end of our holiday in this area (can't comment on the rooms but will give them 5 stars so as not to bump the score down because what we have experienced really has been great). Fairly new owner from what we know, great guy and very welcoming (as was his brother visiting from America) - we were lucky enough to spend 10 nights in the area so got to go for 2 Sunday roasts which were brilliant, couldn't fault it at all really and our 8 year old son thought the same - can't decide between the fudge cake & cheesecake, I would recommend trying both! I also tried the Rogan Josh on the evening of our arrival which was also very tasty indeed, our son was also a big fan of the chicken goujons, I don't think you'd go wrong whatever you picked, all cooked fresh to order! The regulars also were very welcoming for an area of the country that is so quiet to the point where we even took part in the monthly pub quiz, only downside for us is how far away it is from home otherwise I think we'd spend a lot more time here, this is like the local we wish we had! Dogs also more than welcome, our Dottie got several treats and even a bit of the spare beef! Great job guys, keep it up and hope to be back and see you again in the future! This is a classic middle of nowhere country pub, and these guys deserve your support if you're in / around the local area. Thank you so much for a great time! 🙂 (sorry, no photos, we scarfed the food down before we remembered to take any) 😆.

Four adults booked through booking.com for an overnight stay at The New Inn 1730 on Saturday 25th May 2024. We had dogs with us and had just completed helvellyn so arrived at the pub at 3pm expecting it to be open as that was check in time. Nothing was open and we had to look for the owner. We were met by an unfriendly, unprofessional owner who was obvious that he didn't want us to stay... he said that check in was at 4pm, blamed booking.com for the discrepancy and complained that he couldnt finish what he was doing in order to check us in at 3! He actually wanted us to wait in the car for 1hr while he finished cleaning his yard! He wanted to charge us £10 per dog per room even though i had messages from them confirming it was £10 per room for dogs - even though booking.com advertises that dogs are free of charge! He kept asking if I had ID.... I said yes.... and he kept asking?? He just didn't want us there and was going out of his way to show that. Needless to say we were all tired from the 10 mile trek we'd just done so decided that we couldn't stay where we were not wanted. He said he has had the business six weeks and if it is to be successful then he really needs to learn quickly his customer service management skills before his new business goes under. We can't rate the accommodation obviously as we didn't get to stay due to his very poor attitude. Very disappointing.

We stayed here whilst walking the Pennine Way from Middleton on a day of incessant wind and rain. Laurie greeted us (the only patrons of the pub that day) at the door and from that point until we left the next morning, nothing was too much trouble. He immediately got us an extra heater, towels and drying rack for all our soaking wet gear and turned the heating up for us too. We had a lovely meal by the fire and he very kindly dropped us back on the Way thenext morning to do it all over again. His hospitality was a God-send after a miserable day and we were so grateful to him for everything to get us going and reenergised for the next day's walk. Please support him as he starts this new venture!!

Tried the Sunday Lunch. It was fantastic. The beef was perfectly cooked as was the honey roast ham. Served with roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, carrot and swede mash side serving dish with another 4 vegetables. I thought I made the best gravy I have ever had, I accepted yesterday that I am now only in second place to the gravy that chef and his term served with the roast dinner. This gravy should be on prescription. There was also a choice of 3 starters and 3 desserts. Very fairly priced at any 2 courses for £15. Before and after a very good pint of ale was enjoyed. Great host , clever chef and attentive kitchen staff. In the tidy village of Brampton try the New Inn 1730 you will not be disappointed. Northwestnige

A very characterful pub. We had a very tasty meal here. It was also excellent value, the only fault being the food was a little too salty. The choice of music was also good. I love this place most as a pub. It has retained such rich historic detail. I love the wood, stone, flags, old oven and pots. I can imagine coming in from a cold wet wild Cumbrian winter and being welcome with sodden garments and sodden dog. Sitting here is like sitting with the locals in their front rooms. I'm puzzled by the bar closing at 9pm, and hope this is not a signal that the pub will soon only do food. The food is great value with £15 for two courses. There is something for everyone from mushroom packed soup to antipasti and always a vegetarian option. I particularly like that you can get an organic drink here, with organic prosecco on the menu last time. The family enjoyed their Sunday Roasts today.

Great to see the New Inn back open again after a break caused by all the disruption that came with Covid. Their traditional Sunday lunches are the best in the area - a range of meat (and a veggie option), all of it cooked perfectly, and plenty of vegetables. Decent price, too - recently it's been £15 for two courses, with excellent starters plus desserts if you want them. Usually a couple of real ales and wine that is reasonably priced. Best to check opening times.

So The New Inn is now a venue that you can hire that offers the pub and dining area downstairs, and accomodation above. We stayed for a weekend for my mother's 60th birthday celebrations and it was fantastic weekend. The pub and dining area are very traditional, and a great area for socialising. The bedrooms upstairs are very modern with various bathrooms, and very comfortable beds. The site itself is very large with a commercial catering sized kitchen, so perfect for a group of 14 adults. Overall I would certainly recommend this place to anyone looking for somewhere to stay for a large group of people!

When I made the booking for this hotel, I knew it was good find. The lovely gentleman who took our booking was so kind and went out of his way to accommodate us. And thankfully he proved me right. I recently stayed here with my family, including 2 young children. Never have my children (and the rest of us) felt so at home in a b&b. The property itself is obviously old and has retained many of its original features, it feels like stepping back in time with low beams and roaring fires. Nevertheless the ample size rooms that accommodated 3 adults and 2 children were cosy and had incredibly comfy beds. The best thing about the hotel I’d say, is the wonderful welcome we received from the hostess. She did everything within her power to make us feel at home and couldn’t do enough to please. Including a delicious and overly generous breakfast. They’re definitely feeders here. The location is breathtaking, the food outstanding and the staff exceed themselves, what more could you ask for?

Went for opening day advertised as 2 for 1 on selected beers(note plural)...only one real ale which was not good so had to settle for inferior creamflow which they would not offer on the promotion. Till not able to offer a tab. No card payments. Very very cold inside. At about 1.30 fire lit with bellows of smoke into pub....a smokehouse and not pleasant...fire should have been on well before opening to air rooms especially as Saturday night had been down to minus 5 or more. Carvery would have been reasonable had the vegetables been kept hot and the Yorkshire Puddings not been dry and burnt. Would have returned this week but will give the place a miss and go to other more welcoming and warm places. Clear just not ready to properly open after closure and to fail to comply with offer might be viewed as contavening Trading Standards Regulations.

One of our party inadvertently left the gate open upon entering the grounds of the pub. None of us saw the small sign on the gate asking for the gate to be closed. On entering the pub, what transpired to be the owner's puppy shot out of the door and bolted through the gate. The landlady literally pushed one of our party out of the way and berated us for leaving the gate open. The puppy was brought back into the pub, unharmed. The atmosphere was frosty, but we (foolishly in hindsight) decided to order a drink from the bar. The landlord was pleasant, and all seemed OK, although his wife was obviously upset and was stomping around the pub with a face like thunder. We sat down to have our drink, and were immediately told in a rather instructional manner to use the coasters on the table. Obviously the main topic of our conversation during our short stay was the rather brusque manner with which we had been dealt with so far, and how we as customers had been made to feel we were to blame for their puppy running out of the pub. Realistically, how are first time visitors supposed to know that there is a dog waiting to run out into the road? The landlord came over at one point and asked us what we had planned for the weekend. It was quite a pleasant exchange to be fair. We finished our drinks, taking our glasses to the bar as a parting good will gesture. One of our party needed to visit the bathroom before leaving, the rest of us exited and made our way across the road to the car park. As our friend made his way from the toilet to the exit of the pub he could hear the landlord telling other customers how ignorant we were, so he made his presence known and told the landlord to shut up. The first time I become aware of this development is when I saw our friend walking out from the pub followed by the landlord and landlady who were shouting abuse at him. The situation escalated when the landlord threatened physical violence towards our friend, and the landlady attempted to throw a punch at my wife. We were told we were 'up ourselves' and we were told not to visit their pub again. One of our party had the presence of mind to record the fracas outside the pub on their phone. We didn't want this experience to spoil our weekend, so have not taken this serious matter any further as yet.

Called in for lunch as we were passing .the menu seemed very appealing with good choices. I was then told there was a special ready , a slow cooked beef casserole with peppers .It sounded delicious so I ordered it . On its arrival I could not believe what I had been served! A few strips of pre cooked sliced beef and peppers in a thick gelatinous gravy that I wouldn’t even give Bisto the blame for ! This had no way been prepared as a casserole but thrown together some scraps of pre cooked beef and a pepper and a thick packet gravy added ! It was terrible !

We were staying in a holiday cottage in the village and this pub had been recommended by the owners so we tried it on our first night. We had a drink in the cosy bar first which has a good range of local and craft beers, and a nice selection of gins. We ate in the dining room but you can also eat in the bar area which is more relaxed. I had the Cumberland sausages and my husband had the weekly pie special. Both were excellent, good value and the portions were generous so we weren’t able to manage a dessert although they looked tempting. The staff were very friendly and welcoming despite the fact that the pub was busy with locals as it was also quiz night. We returned late in the week as we enjoyed it so much. To be recommended if you’re staying in the area.

The service was efficient and there was lots to choose from on the menu. Myself and my husband shared the meat platter and our daughter had a burger from the children's menu.

I have been several times over the last few months both with family and friends, always a warm welcome from Flash. The food has never disappointed having dined both Sunday lunchtimes and evenings. The curry night is a hit, food prices are reasonable given the quality. The beer is good and a small selection of reasonable priced wines. Would recommend.

We first visited this country pub in January this year and loved the Sunday lunch we had there. We are two couples who had spent the last few days visiting my relatives in Scotland. We all decided that an ideal way to round off the weekend would be to stop at the New Inn for a traditional Sunday roast. We arrived at about 2pm and the locals were enjoying the food. We were given a warm welcome and ordered drinks the locally brewed beer is partially good. Beef, Lamb & Pork were the choices but we found that the pork had sold out but we could have crackling if we wished with the Lamb or Beef.2 Beef and 2 lamb formed our order after a short wait the food arrived and we were not disappointed. Generous portions of well cooked meat, great Yorkshire puddings and wonderful veg (cabbage, carrots, courgettes and lovely roast potatoes) accompanied by delicious gravy. All for just £10 a head. If you are travelling on the A66 give this place a try, its the best Sunday lunch you will get anywhere.

The Cock Inn, Birdwell I'm not really sure where to start with this one...apart from saying that the owners Sal and Rachel, most definitely have the Midas touch when it comes to the food, drink and hospitality industry. The pub boasts of 4 areas. The Cottage Lounge is to the left as you walk through the door, where the Indian cuisine is served, and the Saddle room to the right, leads you to the bar area, which down the steps, leads you into the spacious beer garden and steak house. Upon entering through the Saddle door, we were met with a beautifully warm and cosy welcoming atmosphere. Comfortable seating with a touch of magical romantic fairy lighting draped above. The lady who took our drinks order was very polite and professional, as was our lovely server who took us down to the steak house, to our seats, offering to carry our drinks for us. She really couldn't do enough for us throughout the entire evening. Upon entering the steak house, we were met by the owner, Rachel, who after warmly welcoming us, told us that she had prepared a special main meal for us, which she will be debouing the coming week....Surf, Turf & Quack! We felt extremely special and well looked after as the steak house was only open to us for the evening. The pictures I took of the steak house and pub, really don't do it justice. Our meal kicked off with an onion bhaji with salad and mint sauce. This was to share between me and the Hubby as it was simply huge! I've been to a lot of places and possibly eaten my weight in bhaji's, but this....this was exceptional. The perfect homemade bhaji. The texture was so soft and delicate in the middle, whilst gently crisped on the outside, holding the perfect amount of spice and moisture. Whilst diving into our starter, Sal popped out from behind the scenes to greet and welcome us to the steak house, and to ensure everything was to our liking. He told us how the creation of the bhaji came into existence by his wonderful Mum, who had passed the recipe onto him. Now onto our main. When Rachel first told us she had prepared a special dish for us and that it had prawn and duck in it...my heart sank a little, as I'd never really liked either. But my mind and taste buds were completely blown away by her creation.. Our handcut chips and salad arrived on one hearty plate, followed by 2 sizzling blocks, steadily cooking through a steak filet, 2 tandoori king prawns and a cut of duck. The main was served on hot blocks, so that you can cut the meats up and finish them off to your liking..which is fab if you don't like your meat still quacking and mooing. The meal was served with a boat of creamy, light peppercorn sauce which was to die for. I have to say, that I've never tasted fillet, duck and prawn of that quality.. anywhere. Miller & Carter are not a patch on these guys.. The juicy steak and duck melted in our months, and the king prawns were so succulent and perfectly cooked. I couldn't applaud the Cock Inn more for how Rachel and Sal have brought this beautiful old pub to life. I would most definitely recommend eating and drinking here...like we will be again soon. We have to anyway, as we need to try Sal's fall off the bone lamb shank curry, which will be making it's rounds soon. Before this year's out, Sal and Rachel will be renovating the upstairs to provide an area of the pub to welcome guests that would just like to come for a drink, socialise and relax. And before the Spring pops its head around the corner, a chill zone will be put together outside in the garden, where there'll be a fire pit housed under a gazebo with comfortable seating, so that you can cook your own steaks if you would like to (with staff supervision if course). Also, keep an eye out for Sal's drop of the bone lamb shank curry! Also, on a Thursday early evening from 5pm until 7pm, there is a fish and chip van in the Cock Inn carpark...where your more than welcome to grab a chippy tea and pop into the pub to marry it up nicely with a drink of your liking.

Relaxed atmosphere not too busy but not ghostly quiet. Roast beef was perfect and staff were friendly and helpfully enough without being annoying and in your face.

Used to be a lovely cafe, not any more. Americano coffee tasted like instant and hot pork sandwich lacked hot pork. Won’t be returning.
