Just had to write one final review of this excellent restaurant which is now sadly closed. We were lucky enough to have our second (and now, final) chance to try their tasting menu, and every dish was a delight. Looking forward to seeing whether there will be a new place with Michelin stars to try soon!

Popped in here on a Monday evening for dinner with my Son. On arrival we were quickly shown to our table, given a menu and specials board and drinks order taken. Drinks arrived promptly and food order taken. We both opted for a steak and ale pie, mash and peas which arrived promptly. I always feel the test of a good pie is once you break the top crust and no rush of air is forthcoming then you have a full pie. This pie didn’t sag on first cutting, it was simply full of delicious tender steak and ale gravy, full to the brim. Accompanied by a good real ale this meal was a genuine delight. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Service was attentive and quick and the young lady who served us was extremely polite. Thoroughly recommended.

Well, where do I start. We, as a couple, usually book afternoon tea (for our anniversary) at Rockcliffe Hall (Croft), but the prices have been increasing year on year, so we thought we’d try somewhere else. I wish I’d just paid the £80 to go to RH. The Redworth Hall Hotel visit started with litter all over the place on the approach. Crisp packets rammed into the gaps in the outdoor tables; empty cigarette packets strewn all over the place, and then an empty can of Kronenberg keeping the Lion statue (at the entrance) company. The door, when I went to push it open was sticky…probably from too many spilt drinks on it, then we were directed to the room where afternoon tea was served (see picture of empty room). That’s when the alarm bells really rang. An empty restaurant room. At Rockcliffe Hall you struggle to get a seat..!!! Next…the cobwebs at the bottom of the curtains…paint peeling off the walls…tears in the curtains, and threadbare carpets. Now for the food. The sandwiches were fine, although one of my wife’s finger sandwiches were 1/2 the size on the top part than the bottom. Two of the cakes were (I’m sure) illuminous. The scones were too crumbly to put the cream on…definitely not worth the expenditure. Came to pay…was expecting £42, got a bill of £47.25. The waitress had already printed off the invoice with a £5.25 extra service charge. This SC was NEVER mentioned, NEVER on any menu, so why was it added? For the service maybe? What service? The tea and sandwiches/cakes were brought out then we didn’t see anyone after that until we had to pay. Avoid like the proverbial plague. Never going back, and will so not recommend. 4 1/2 stars on trip advisor…really. I really should have paid double and got what we wanted. But like old saying goes, you pay for what you get…that being the case, the service charge by itself would have been too much. FOLLOW UP FROM CONTACT WITH REDWORTH HALL MANAGEMENT After the management team reading my review I was contacted about it. They admitted that the litter situation would be looked into; they did say that the restaurant area was earmarked for refurbishment and that the price of the afternoon tea reflected this; they admitted that the service charge was a recent company wide introduction, and therefore had not been placed on the menus or advertised anywhere on the website. They did say that this will be removed until such a time as this was the case (advertising the charge). The quality of food wasn’t mentioned, however. I have been offered a refund of the service charge and also a 50% refund of the afternoon tea charge, which I accepted, and also told them that I would amend my initial review.

Having just had a similar afternoon tea in a castle in Cheshire we can say that this was streets ahead of that and any other other afternoon teas. The setting is very glamorous, the staff well trained and the food was lovely. Really made the day for our parents' anniversary.

Lunch was fine but had lunch disturbed by an angry man leading the kitchen… don’t have a kitchen open to the restaurant if you are going to rant and rave and be mean to the waiting staff as customers do not want to hear this whilst having lunch that they are paying for! Not the best experience and view shared by others dining around us.
