Excellent evening meal. Very friendly staff. A varied choice of food, the prawns for a starter were excellent. Loved the cocktails. Definitely worth a repeat visit.

We went here today to try the Sunday lunch. Wow, it was absolutely superb. The refurb looks amazing and the decor was welcoming and very tasteful. Everything from the service, to the quality of the food was exceptional. The beef was delicious and to have cauliflower cheese as standard was a definite win for me. Everything was cooked to perfection. Massive shout out to the lovely staff. Everyone who served us was friendly, efficient and nothing was a problem. My new favourite place for Sunday lunch. We will definitely be back. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

Booked this last minute via the online booking tool which was quick and easy to do. My boy and I had three courses I has the chilli Garlic Prawns which was a small meal in itself my boy had hummus starter both were delicious The steak main was delicious and I has the swordfish from the specials we finished with apple crumble and sticky toffee pudding It was quiet but everything was amazing highly recommended 🤩

Have been wanting to go since it opened and now have been twice in one week. Very good for Sunday lunch and lovely staff and beautifully decorated and renovated. Tonight the fish and chips were fabulous but I was disappointed with the Pork chop. Quite small but the salad was very nice. However it was served with what they called 'champ' but this was not champ an Irish version of mashed potato. It is supposed to be fluffy mash with lots of butter and white pepper and chopped spring onions. This was almost a puree with what looked like tiny bits of parsley or some other green. It will not stop me going as it is lovely place with interesting menu, great car park and neat grounds and some disabled parking. Am sure this place will be very busy.

On entering you could see straight away what an amazing job they’ve done on the refurb. Stunning. Amazing atmosphere, we had Sunday lunch, beef and pork, then creme brûlée and rice pudding, all delicious. Super dog friendly too! We loved the vibe of this place and it is now our go to place. We popped along for lunch to celebrate my 72nd birthday and had a really wonderful time The food is great. The atmosphere is fantastic and the toilets are very clean. All the staff are very friendly and looked after us extremely well and special. Would highly recommend this place! Amazing food- the chilli prawn starter were the best prawns we’ve ever tasted, the sauce they were in was delicious. I had the chicken schnitzel and my partner had a steak- he said the steak was the nicest he’d ever had! The puddings were great too- recommend the sticky toffee pudding! The service was great, plenty of staff and they were attentive without being too much. Lovely atmosphere, it’s been renovated in a lovely way and is a lovely place to visit.

We were recommended to go to the recently (Sept 23) refurbished and reopened Spotted Dog by the landlord of a pub in the Barnard Castle area. We booked online. We were VERY impressed. Large car park. Welcomed and we asked if we could have drink at the bar before ordering and eating. Took advantage of a bit of a look round. What a great refurb. Good menu, terrific meal and excellent and friendly service. Highly recommend.

First time since refurb and not disappointed. Warm welcome, shown to our seats quickly, specials explained and drinks order taken. The food was lovely and served by young, friendly, well trained staff. A plus was that we had large pure white linen serviettes. Only negatives were, we weren’t asked if we had allergies, one guest ordered vegetarian pie and received the beef (was so nice he want returning it, but had he been vegetarian could have been an issue), I ordered fish of the day which was supposed to come with house salad and one side, I chose greens as side - received fries instead of house salad, which I left. Ordered lime and lemonade, received lime and soda. Would definitely return

We pre-booked our ‘tea’ via their online booking system which was excellent, quickly followed up by an email confirmation. You are even given the choice of being seated in the bar - fireplace - or restaurant. We’d never been before so chose the restaurant. We found the pub on a very dark rainy night and we received a very warm welcome. We were very impressed with the place. A great vibe and it’s super modern. Both of our main meals were absolutely delicious ! We were really looking forward to our Baked Apple & Oats Crumble for dessert but unfortunately they failed to add to the description the fact it had cinnamon in ….. and not just a bit either. It was over powering and I really like cinnamon but this ruined it. At £8.50 a dessert we felt this was a complete waste of money. Wish we’d chosen the crème brule now !

Amazing food. Was de-lish We had booked a table & this was ready when we arrived. Order for drinks & we didnt have to wait long for these to be served Food waiting time as expected (non of this over an hour like I have read). Prob about 5-10mins between starters to main. Our party of 4 had between us potato skins, scotch egg & beef/potato croquettes Main - x2 specials of beef, fish pie & GF fish & chips We were all stuffed and had no room for a pudding. I liked that each course was brought out all together so no-1 was waiting for each other. We will be back

This was our first time visiting the spotted dog, since its refurbishment, we were not disappointed. Popped in at lunchtime & the place was a hive of activity. Given it was January we were pleasantly surprised. Very attentive service all the staff seem to care which is a big plus in any restaurant. Food was top notch we could not fault it, really delicious. Well done all, we will be back.

It was my son's 18th birthday with family. we were placed in a room at the rear of the pub, which was fantastic. Staff were all fantastic and looked after us all brilliantly. The food was fantastic, and steak was cooked to perfection, so my son said he too is a chef and praised chefs. Thank you all for making a special date special hat's off to all involved. Lovely and welcoming interior. Food was delicious- good quality comfort food at the higher price end for pub food but definitely worth it. The scotch egg and king prawn starters were some of the best we've had. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We look forward to visiting again.

We decided to try The spotted dog with friends as it has been refurbished and we heard it is ran by the same people who own Saltfish in Darlington. We love Saltfish! There is a really good menu including vegan and vegetarian with plenty of choices. I had the miso glazed courgette salad with whipped ricotta, I think I picked the wrong thing! It was just average. My husband had the beef shin which he said was nice and apparently the soup was lovely. The mains unfortunately were just ok, (fish cake, burger, pie and pork T bone) the pie was the smallest pie we have ever seen so be warned! The service was very good. We would probably return to give it a second chance to see if things have improved but maybe it’s just because it was a Saturday night and very busy. Saltfish still remains a favourite as we have never had an ‘ok meal’ it’s always been a ‘fantastic meal’

Two friends and I made a point of going to visit this newly renovated and refurbished, once very popular venue. However, over more recent years, it had drifted off into the doldrums due entirely to bad management. However, our experience was very much more positive! We were met, on entering, by a very pleasant ‘front of house’ who gave us a little information about the in house well - newly discovered when the bar was removed! Apparently no-one knew about it! We were shown to our table, presented with menus and drinks were ordered. The menu is good. A great mix of courses and choices. We went for steak pie (pie of the week) and fish cake served on spinach, topped with poached eggs and a home made hollandaise with no sugar! Why does hollandaise require sugar? It doesn’t! It really doesn’t! Samphire was sprinkled on the top and this dish was billed as served with fries. My friend ordered hand cut chips and I ordered salad instead. No problem. The meals were really tasty and piping hot. The wine was delicious, the coffee equally so (but sadly they’d run out of chocolate for the cappuccino.) the service second to none and the decor relaxing with modern soft background music. The whole place has changed and definitely for the better. Could not recommend highly enough. The Spotted Dog rises from the ashes once again!

We booked a table for the wednesday 2 for 1 offer. Prompt welcome who showed us to, by request, to a table close to the log burner. Assured that fire had been lit but oddly not a bit of heat was detected. Maybe the fire had been lit on another day. Drinks came promptly and server ran down the list of dishes not available. We ordered 2 sirloin steaks...took 50 mins to arrive. My steak was tough but my wife's was tender and acceptable. Came with home made chips, a portobello mushroom and a couple of home made fried and battered onion rings. Delicious and chips were authentically home made. Bill for 2 came to just over £20 including drinks (80p for a dsas of lemonade...ouch!)Pity about my steak (hence ** rating)but overall decent value for money.

We came here to celebrate a friends birthday. There was quite a large group of us (9 people in total) however the restaurant said they could cater for us no problem. We went very early on in the night. When we arrived we got told there was no coca cola, lemonade or Guinness. When we sat down we had to ask them to come take our order. We then placed our order for them to return 10 minutes later and tell us some choices had run out. So we made our amendments and waited. Over an hour later staff came to tell us there was no chicken left. I questioned why it took them over an hour to realise this as surely the food should be nearly ready. The response I recieved was disgusting and extremely rude and unprofessional. I then decided to not make another food choice because I was so badly spoken to. I was also told that they were busy and I would just have to wait. However if they were too busy the shouldn't of accepted our booking. The food started to arrive and 1 guests food was stone cold. We all started eating and unfortunately there was still 1 person waiting for his food (the birthday boy of all people). Everyone had finished their food by the time his came out. There was absolutely no apology for any of it, no "sorry for your wait" and no one came to check if everything was okay. Staff were absolutely shocking and had no manners. I appreciate busy pubs are stressful but as stated they shouldn't of said yes to our booking if they couldn't cater. All 9 of us won't be returning and we've passed on this information to our friends and family who also won't be going.

Arrived at the pub after we had booked by phone, The place was empty. Showed to our table and then nothing, Usually your asked if you want a drink but not here ? We were just about to leave when someone finally came to our table and asked if we would like a drink. we ordered drinks and dinners at the same time and then sat and waited. Considering the place was nearly empty the dinner seemed to take an eternity to arrive, When it finally arrived was pleasantly surprised the food was quite good if not a bit cold though, Nobody approached our table again until I went and found someone, we would of loved another drink as the beer was good, we asked for the sweets menu which arrived about 10 minutes later, but nobody ever asked what sweets we wanted, We finally just gave up and went to the bar and paid and left, We won't be going back here unless we have an afternoon to lounge away, the staff need to be trained as this pub is losing money badly

Visited as a couple and disappointed in the vegetarian options, very limited choice available. I had the haddock and it looked beautiful but unfortunately had no flavour whatsoever. My choice of sticky toffee pudding for dessert was short lived as the waitress came back to tell us there wasn’t any. My partner chose Eton mess but there was nothing else I fancied so decided not to have a pudding. The waitress returned to say unfortunately there was no ice cream, so neither of us had a dessert. Who runs out of ice cream? We had a table booked for 6.30pm so it wasn’t late. We had to chock the table leg with six beer mats and there were no serviettes. We were overcharged by £2.50 but chose not to dispute it, that was our choice. Overall disappointed and won’t return. One positive comment, the waitress was very apologetic and friendly and we thank you for that.

I had a Groupon voucher from Christmas for this restaurant, I don’t really use it so not familiar with how it works. It was definitely very obvious the staff weren’t keen on the vouchers, they seemed to cater to everyone else so well, walking customers to their table discussing the wine menu etc, but we were sat in a corner & ignored completely and waited so long for our food. If you’re gonna go then do not use a groupon voucher, they were so ignorant to us and made us feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed even though we paid for a lot of extras. Having seen the offer posted on Facebook we decided to give this a try , I mean 3 courses for £10 what more could you want ? We were a little early but when we went to the bar there was no problem at all and we were quickly seated at our table. Our drinks order was promptly taken and we perused the menu .There were 3 starters to choose from , 4 mains including a vegan option and a fish option and 3 desserts. We both chose chicken satay skewers with Asian slaw to start , these were very tasty and the slaw had a nice kick to it . For the mains we had both chosen crispy beef stir fry with noodles and prawn crackers , again very tasty with just the right amount of bite to the veg. For dessert we had differed in choice I had the baked cheese cake and the hubby had the chocolate brownie ...both we found to be rich and deliciously indulgent. The pub had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were welcoming , attentive without hovering and friendly. We had a lovely meal at a fantastic value for money price , a great evening!

Can't recommend this place enough. I visited last night with my family - all 10 of us. It was absolutely fantastic the staff were so accommodating especially considering 4 of our party were VERY excitable toddlers! We had a brilliant table conveniently tucked away in the corner. The food was amazing we all had steak which was cooked to perfection. Even though we were dining with the Groupon vouchers we were not made to feel awkward as sometimes happens when you mention using a voucher to pay. We were even given free haggis tapas to celebrate Burns Night. We'll definitely be coming back particularly in the warmer months as the outside space with dining tables and children's play area are perfect for us. What a find!!

We were not disappointed the beef was so tender and all the sides cooked to perfection... pigs in blankets,cauliflower cheese and cabbage with bacon, extra gravy - not a problem - all delicious and piping hot.

From start to finish the experience we had was so disappointing. Firstly we weren't even acknowledged as having arrived until it was our turn to be served drinks. It takes nothing from staff to say I’ll be with you in a moment.

Booked 7pm Christmas Eve, received confirmation. They rang 4.30pm Christmas Eve to cancel. Appalling

Visited Friday 27th December,not busy,greeted by waitress explaining what wasn't available on the menu as they had been very busy,not great start!!We ordered,food came,was ok,no complaints.

All I can say is thank you to Alex, Andy, Liam and all the staff. Our lunch was exceptional. This is the second Christmas lunch we have had here and we will back next year

Myself and my partner booked a table of 7 for the family was greeted with bucks fizz on arrival and greeted warmly the service was excellent the staff were friendly and the food was outstanding all I can say is WOW great portions fresh food presented lovely I would like to say a big well done to the staff and definitely the chef we are that impressed we've booked again for next year I strongly recommend this place one in a million

Visited for Thursday lunch with my daughter. We initially worried the empty tables may be a reflection of the food/service. Those fears were soon laid to rest by the friendly and efficient bar man and the delicious meals he brought to our table. The pictures I’ve posted to accompany this thread really don’t do the food justice - but go some way. The gammon steak was just that: 2cm thick and cooked perfectly. The venison and mushroom pie was delicious and packed to the lid with meat. Both meals were piping hot and delivered simultaneously. The whole place was spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and with subdued subtle background music. I can only guess the bleak weather, proximity to Christmas and the pubs village location accounted for the lack of custom. However, the bar man assured me evenings were much busier and Christmas Day was heavily booked. This place is well worth driving to - and I can only envy the residents of High Coniscliffe who can walk to it as their Local.

We came here for tea after work as neither of us fancied cooking. A pleasant surprise to find their grill menu was on 241 so we both ordered from there.

Tuesday evening taking advantage of a Groupon coupon we booked knowing the pub had a reputation for good food. Although not so many people in the place is welcoming and comfortable and the barman was very polite and attentive. The food for the 4 of us was served timely and was excellent, loved that the pie was a proper homemade pie with a top and bottom.
