The Bay Horse in Darlington

Popped in here on a Monday evening for dinner with my Son. On arrival we were quickly shown to our table, given a menu and specials board and drinks order taken. Drinks arrived promptly and food order taken. We both opted for a steak and ale pie, mash and peas which arrived promptly. I always feel the test of a good pie is once you break the top crust and no rush of air is forthcoming then you have a full pie. This pie didn’t sag on first cutting, it was simply full of delicious tender steak and ale gravy, full to the brim. Accompanied by a good real ale this meal was a genuine delight. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Service was attentive and quick and the young lady who served us was extremely polite. Thoroughly recommended.

the food is pretty bland and meh and not that good . And has a uncomfortable atmosphere . With a podium/restrum for u to wait for a table I'm expecting a auction to start at anytime and bid on ya food or table. I hate seeing the podium in pubs and dislike table service just as much in pubs it makes me uncomfortable. They nice and friendly here and beer is nice

Nice selection of ales all well kept, good service and lots of cosy seating areas.

The staff were exceptionally good. The food was delicious. However I will have to invoice you the cost of therapy that I need to have, in order to get over the fact that I’ll never eat a rice pudding as good as that again 😭 #gutted #foodenvy

They put fish sauce in my lasagna instead of Bolognese. Not really anything else I’d ever need to say. Please stay away if you’re looking for a nice meal.

My husband and I went here for lunch. Before we went we checked their menu out on there website all looked very nice. We haven't been here for a very long time we used to go where we were courting which was over 35 years ago and haven't been since till today, the place looks exactly the same just a bit worse for wear very sticky tables and worn seats that all could do with some TLC. Food was good value for money husband had the Black and blue burger and I had the black and blue parmo pictures attached. There were four things on the menu that weren't available! and the desert menu that was on the website had Churros on which was to be honest the main reason we went and well they are now not on their menu they just haven't updated the website 😕

Called into the Bay Horse as we are camping nearby. The meal we had was excellent, with some great gluten free options, which is often a real challenge in pubs. Highly recommended.

A quiet sort of pub with pleasant atmosphere and it is lovely and warm with proper fire in the hearths. Good value, excellent quality and taste of food. Real chips!!! One of our regular eating places.

We booked a table for a Sunday carvery and we turned up at the wrong Bay Horse pub, 20 minutes away! I phoned and explained and they were very understanding and willing to hold our table. The pub is a beautiful country pub in a lovely village green with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The carvery was outstanding, at an exceptionally reasonable price and the staff were very friendly. We will definitely go again and make sure we put the right post code into the sat nav!

I was looking forward to visiting the bay horse as it's been a good 10+ years since I last visited. Unfortunately the food arrived and hour after we arrived with at least half of our party commenting on only being able to taste chargrill...mine was either burnt or so over cooked that the meat was just dry and hard to eat. It wasn't all doom and gloom, the parmos received great reviews so at least a couple of our party were happy! The staff were friendly and were clearly very busy but overall waiting over an hour in the cold and then feeling disappointed with the food, I think I'll give it another 10+ years before I return.

Rude staff we come here all the time ruined daughters birthday . Waitresses so rude and meals were not great what a shame .

We like to call in here when we stay at Redworth Hall, the food is fantastic, great little pub with great atmosphere and staff are nice aswell.

Had the mixed grill. Was really nice. Wife had hotshot parmo. She enjoyed it. Staff Friendly.

Visited the bay horse Tuesday 9th Jan, beautiful food and staff were welcoming and very pleasant, they couldn't do enough and made our visit very pleasant

My wife Christine and myself called in whilst staying at Redworth Hall Hotel , called in to watch the Sunderland v Newcastle match. Mixture of both sets of fans , warm welcoming pub with proper coal fires, nice food and polite staff. great pub with a great atmosphere.

Service needs to improve, lots of chatting between young staff and not a lot of work being done. No body asked us if food was ok and had to interrupt several conversations to get attention. One conversation we over heard was inappropriate and not needed when eating dinner.

Service was excellent, food was well prepared and hot and tasty 😋.

Called in for lunch. Very quiet but it was midweek & the lead up to Xmas Staff were very pleasant. Limited menu available as the day before they had sold out of some dishes.We had a Parmo & Coba Burger both were nicely cooked & large portion(we took half home) The pub could do with a refurbish as it's looking very tired.You can see the Staff work hard to keep it clean & tidy. There was a real fire so it was nice & warm.

In search of somewhere other than my hotel to have dinner I happened upon this pub, illuminated behind a village green. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Well-populated with locals. Friendly staff too.

Lovely pub with locals simultaneously watching the football and the rugby. Nice beer on tap at this CAMRA listed pub. We went for the food which was great on all fronts: tasty, attractively priced and a very generous portion. We were delighted to have found this jewel. Also good car park at the back so no need to clutter up the village green.

Run down. Desperately needs a refurb. Table we were on was so sticky and when we said we were told "we know, we've cleaned it, and scrubbed it". In that case it needs chucking. Good selection of drinks. Food "good grub" but meh nothing really to enthuse about. Staff ok but em. Perhaps a clean apron?

Went for Sunday lunch with family, the beef was very chewy on mine veg was ok wife had turkey which was nice and daughter left half of hers as was tasteless. We then had deserts which were nothing special dry and tasteless with frozen fruits apart from the chocolate orange are which was delicious. The eating area could do with a good clean lots of big spiders webs and was big spider on the table which my wife jump. Overall it was a very average carvary not badly priced but won't be going there again.

Great place. Great food. Always has been. Now serves gluten free substitutes for those who require. My relative had G/F fish and chips. I tried it along with mine (non g/f). Good stuff.

Friendly service good food and beer

A real man's pub where he can roll in after a hard day's graft down the pit and shake some of that salt of the earth off intae his chips like. Seriously though, a place rammed with beamish revellers plus locals and walkers. After spending a whole day there once I noticed a trend forming, every mealtime the pub fills up before emptying again after each meal of the day. That's a sign of good pub grub right there. If only they had more beers choice

A wonderful local pub with a great (non clicky) vibe. Wonderful staff and good food. I would highly recommend the bar menu for a quick and satisfying bite. The main restaurant is also very good.

Had a carvery today . Food was not piping hot but warm . Staff member puts meat and vegetables on the plate but our vegetables were piled on top of each other . Roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were delicious and proper meat gravy . Lovely warm welcome from staff but not sure if we would return.

Visited on Thursday evening pub was lovely and busy with open fires and a welcoming atmosphere, 9 of us were out celebrating a birthday, the food was delicious, home style cooking and looking forward to returning to try other meals, would highly recommend.

I didnt comment at the time as this was a meal my colleagues were paying for. But as tarter of prawns was gluten free specific would have hoped for gf bread to go with it as fathers got as a large amount of sauce. Also then main burger meat was all over cooked. Disappointing as recommended and no excuse of being busy.

Nice little pub with a great vibe. Found it while staying in area. Food smelt and looked lovely we never ate but wished we had.

Normally over priced and full of people that think there better than anyone else

Visited on a Thursday afternoon at about 2pm. The pub was very quite so plenty of seats to choose from. We were presented with a board which had all the options available. We both opted for the sandwich option one sausage and onion the other Mediterranean vegetables both included chips. The food arrived quickly, with no frills. Both dishes were priced at £6.95 and you get what you paid for. Food was hot chips were frozen but not too bad. I opted for apple pie and custard for dessert. Again delivered quickly with plenty of custard served in a jug. The cost came to just under £20 which included 3 soft drinks.

Great, real home cooked food in generous portions. Lovely, slightly dated feel to the place which adds to its charm. Will definitely be back!

Food was lovely little bit dingy for me but then again its an old pub staff were friendly and service wasn't bad. Food or drink your welcome for both.

We were sat near tvs & fireplace, had a drink or two. Nice pub but not noticed before, a bit musty, & damp smell down that end of pub.Otherwise a traditional pub, nice atmosphere.

Good Sunday Lunch, good value for money staff were friendly. However one thing that was off putting is the fly’s around the food area of the Carvery. Close the front door which would probably eliminate the fly’s.

Nice meals good service will be going again. Next time will try different meals.

First time we have tried this place, the carvery has amazing choices and the portion size is unreal! You won't be disappointed. Good quality fresh food and lovely staff. We will definitely return again! A*** Sunday roast!!!! Returned during week and same results. Definitely worth a visit. Fresh food cooked to perfection... Chips to die for 😜

Popped in for lunch as was not disappointed. Big range to choose from. Home made pies sold double quick time and can understand, they're lovely. Staff friendly and efficient. Will definitely return.

Great food , very welcoming, traditional English country village pub , ample free parking at rear .carvery meal was great , choose ur meat. Then a member of staff asks what veg you require and they will serve the portions for you ...average price , good cold lager
