I can’t fault the food or the price at this restaurant. We did enjoy and the setting was beautiful - the hall itself is really impressive. Only feedback : I feel like they’ve missed a trick! When we told a local we were going there it raised an eyebrow - they considered it very highly and on arrival, I understood why. But on seeing the menu, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. For such prestigious surroundings and a grand entrance, I was surprised the menu consisted of burger, curry and fish and chips. I was expecting fine dining and locally sourced ingredients to match the high level of service and location. I would happily have paid more than the £14 main course price tag for something a little more special. As I said, the food was good - just a little underwhelming as it had the feeling of being bought in / pre made (example - the pâté). I would recommend the chicken pie but not the brownie - it wasn’t really a brownie and needed ice cream or cream with it.

We went to the Catherine Wheel after seeing the recommendation on the Bristol Barkers website. We arrived at around 13.15 and we were clearly unwelcome from the moment we arrived. The pub was busy, so we tried to sit at the bar, but we're told we couldn't sit there because there wasn't enough space. Fine, so we moved around the corner to a free table that had no reservation notice on it. Originally, we intended to have lunch, but when I went to get a menu and order our drinks, I was told that they would need the table back by 2.45 as it was booked from 3pm,and the kitchen was backed up, so there was a significant delay on food. Because of this, and the fact that it was Sunday lunchs or nothing, we decided not to eat. At this point, the bar staff became visibly irritated. He reiterated that they would need the table back for food at 2.45, but about 5-10 minutes later (around 13. 30) he came back and told us they needed the table back for people who wanted to eat and we had to leave. Even though they'd previously said they needed the table back at 2.45 and there was no-one actually waiting for our table. We asked if there was another table we could move to and we're told no. My friend asked if we could have a refund for our drinks because of the inconvenience and was told no. So we went to leave. My friend then asked to speak to the manager and was told there was no manager on site. What pub doesn't at least have a shift supervisor on a busy Sunday lunch time? All of this despite the local man who clearly knew the barstaff, arrived after us, and was sat alone at the same size table, nursing a pint, who clearly was not going to be asked to vacate his table. I have never been treated so disrespectfully by bar staff. They just kept trotting out the same week rehearsed lines, so clearly, they do this a lot.

After a long day on the CW we were pleased to be warmly welcomed. I much regret that I cannot remember the name of the lady who greeted us, and who seemed be on duty permanently, doing everything, and who was excellent in every respect. Not sure why I should have been surprised that the accommodation was not part of the main building but it is was no less good for that. A good size room, good shower room and a very comfortable bed. Dinner menu was good as were the meals themselves. Breakfast, too, was good. We should be very happy to return.
