We were very disappointed by our visit. The menu looked fabulous but they were out of pretty much everything - and what they did have was sub standard. I am certain the ingredients for the “ploughman’s lunch” was from the supermarket (not a crime but definitely not worth £15). The chef was sitting out the front most of the time which highlighted that they were very low on food in the kitchen. The only plus was the beer was very good. We will not be returning. Such a pity as the place has a lot of potential.

Needed a quick pitstop before catching a bus. Gents toilets not in a good state. Tables everywhere left uncleared. Drinks came quickly but food was slow and half cold. Trying not to be harsh but it wasn't exactly busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff.

Hygiene and segregation? We were initially placed into an section where ethnic minorities were the main demographic I asked to sit in the warmer brighter section of the restaurant Where there was plenty of space I saw one of the staff who is a team member pulling the hair of one of his colleagues twisting it around his finger and patting her bun. Our order was then ready and he immediately reached for the plates of food without washing his hands and I had to stop him. went to wash his hands but it was too late. I lost my confidence in the hygiene standards of the restaurant. The manager said that he would speak with the staff. Hopefully the team will learn better lessons. Apparently, hairnets are not required so please look out for hair your food if you go and ensure that they wash their hands!!

We were given Afternoon Tea at the Randolph as a present from some friends, so we didn't actually pay for this but I'd have been rather disappointed if we had. We'd asked to sit in the Drawing Room but were told that there were no other bookings for the Drawing Room and therefore we had to have it in the Alice Restaurant, which, while nice enough, wasn't as atmospheric or well appointed. (There were plenty of people in the Drawing Room too, so the argument that it "would have no atmosphere" was slightly odd.) Service was slow, and for £79, I'd have expected a bit more pizzazz than four tiny sandwiches each (none of which included roast beef and horseradish), a couple of scones and some tiny cakes. The scones were very good, and were served warm with lovely clotted cream and nice jam. Four of the varieties of tea were unavailable, including both Darjeeling and Assam. We've had previous experiences of afternoon tea in other 5* hotels where we've been served with excellent hors d'oeuvres, attentive service with additional sandwiches and top-ups of tea, and boxes for cakes automatically offered, so the Randolph did seem like very poor value in comparison.
