The Four Candles in Oxford

Great value for money, I went with an aunt for pre theatre fish and chips ,I had a good sized thick fillet with crispy batter, and a perfectly cooked soft cod inside , it was delicious. the chips were standard chips but perfectly cooked . All the condiments were branded and plentiful. We had apple crumble and ice cream , the crumble no nonsense traditional Apples and spices with a good crumble topping , I have eaten in pubs where you are paying £17.50 for fish and chips (see last review😁) and had dreadful food , so thought I would up the four candles , Credit where it’s due . Also the waitress who served us was lovely and very helpful .

It’s an OK spoons. However, it does not serve any steaks or anything else for that matter on the grill menu! So if you’re thinking of enjoying a mixed grill, or 8oz steak, forget it. It’s a very unusual layout for a spoons, with the toilets downstairs (not particularly clean either - Gents). Service (via app) was extremely slow and not particularly busy either. Wouldn’t return to this one and will try the other Oxford City centre based spoons instead next time .

It's about as busy as a pub gets. I remember when it used to be a Yates. Better now

Quite nice pub in city centre. It's one of Wetherspon pubs, so prices are really affordable.

Very popular venue on our Saturday evening visit, managed to get a table. Ordered off the app, served in acceptable time scale.

Went for a few drinks here, was asked to leave the pub for being too loud? I had bought a drink on the app before being asked to leave and was never refunded (I did ask when I would get my money and was told it would be a few business days) Extremely dissapointed and want my money back!

I always like the Wetherspoon chain, and fish and chips were always good. However in this specific one it was too greasy both fish and chips, I actually couldn’t finish the meal which was disappointing. But the atmosphere is very cozy!

Another nice building in the older part of town. Not a lot of seating room so crowded out cramped. Toilets not the best Spoons seen.

Bouncer at the door is extremely, and consistently rude. Seems to be on some sort of strange power trip which I don't quite understand.

Encantador pub Wetherspoon no muy lejos de la estación. Doble piso, ambiente hermoso, buen ambiente. Nada especial, las bebidas habituales que sirven. El servicio es bueno y rápido. Lugar ocupado porque lleno de estudiantes, pero a todos les gusta disfrutar.

Exactly what we wanted before a show. The tables along the balcony were too close together and felt like I was sitting with the lady on the table behind me. You couldn’t sit on both side of the table if the table adjacent was occupied. Remove one of the tables and space out the remaining.

Good cheap food.I had ham egg and chips which was ok.Free beer with certain meals .The restaurant bit was a little too crammed together.Ok though.

Awful pint. The worst Spoons I've been in. Had a pint of Worthingtons here which was not right. Took about ten minutes to settle. Didn't look right. Mentioned it to the two ladies serving and they basically told me I was incorrect even though I have had pints of Worthington in at least 20 different Wetherspoons pubs and never had a pint like this. It also tasted unpleasant. I didn't drink it. Went to a pub where the bar staff listen to their customers rather than contradict and argue with them. I am usually a massive fan of Spoons and will continue to frequent their establishments... just not this one. I love Spoons as a company and own shares. This pub may be tarnishing your image. A bit of customer service training would probably not go amiss.

Went out for a retirement party, fantastic service,great selection of drinks,good vibes

The staff seemed super inconvenienced by their work. The loaded fries just had microwaved cheese and 4 bits of bacon (literally). Cheese fries were the same but sans meat. They didn't even play light music the whole time I was there. To their credit, the chickens wings were great ( only reason for the 2 stars), and the place was quiet-ish. Date visited: 3rd Nov '24.

As soon as you enter the store, the first thing you see is a long bar counter, which is very eye-catching~ The meals here, whether they are fish and chips, Indian curry, or grilled platters, are all delicious, and the portions are generous, so you can have a full meal!

Ordered food on app, after a long wait was informed that the meals requested were unavailable. Server was ignorant and unhelpful. Table was dirty and had to ask for it to be cleaned. Luckily was on hand to issue a partial refund. Would not recommend. Usually have a pleasant meal at Weatherspoons, but out this occasion.

decent spoons what you expect- no box cider unfortunately but outside west country so expected .decent service upstairs as well so more seating than looks like

We'd been to the Kafka Exhibition at the Weston Library so needed a Wetherspoons to relax with a bite and a drink. Excellent. Perhaps clean the tables a bit more thoroughly.

I had the double burger 🍔 it was so black I just couldn't eat it please check your burger if you ordered one .there must have a new person in the kitchen because it used to be so much better. I am going back again to see if it was a one off .and this time I will be taken pictures

Necesitaba una parada rápida antes de coger un autobús. Los baños de caballeros no están en buen estado. Mesas por todas partes sin despejar. Las bebidas llegaron rápidamente, pero la comida era lenta y medio fría. Tratando de no ser duro, pero no era exactamente ocupado y parecía que había un montón de personal.

Good beer, large selection. There are great and cheap offers, depending on the day of the week or the time of year. The ambience is a little "reverberant", but quite comfortable considering the architecture.

I forgot my umbrella and came back 20 mins after they closed. They said I had they found it but could not give it to me since they were already closed. It was raining and inhaftiert to walk home without my umbrella. Came two days later to pick it up and they said they didn’t find it. Worst customer service I ever experienced in any pub!

Nice Wetherspoons and the toilets are on the ground floor, no climbing 100 steps!!

Grand place with a sense of humour.

A pretty good spoons all round and likely the best spoons in the area. Toilets are relatively clean throughout the day and night. Food always comes hot and correct 👍 the selection of condiments are kept well stocked too!

If you are looking for a reasonably priced pub in Oxford (something truly rare here), this is the place to go. I liked the vibe here. Very lively and happening! Good location on George Street. Very easily accessible. It's quite a big place. Two-storeyed. And also has a few tables outdoors.

Nice atmosphere, prices are great, staff are polite and helpful.

Good food, rather cheap (except for the cheese fries). But dirty toilets were a letdown.... 🤢 And every few minutes very loud bangs from waitresses/waiters that throw cutlery or glasses in the dishwash bin.... 🙉

What is expected from a Wetherspoon's. Quick and polite experience from the staff, we were there at 10am on a Saturday and there were already 3 roudy tables! Not the bars fault but impacts the atmosphere

Good central pub near the train and bus station. I assume they don't have a grill as there was no grilled section in the menu. Customers are loud but can't blame Spoons for that.

An usual wetherspoon pub. I visited around 12pm on a Sunday and it wasn't crowded. I got a jacket potatio with cheese and beans with some orange juice. Food and service was good.

Pleasant and drinks supprisingly cheap. Only a couple of minutes walk from historic center of Oxford. The bus station is just meters from the main door. The unique 'Psrk and Ride' bus service can be caught at stops located almost immediately outside the pub's main entrance, each side of the of George Street.

I've been to many Wetherspoons restaurants across the country. On the face of it, it should be a pleasant experience, but it lacked atmosphere and the normally very pleasant Wetherspoons service we are used to was not present, for us at least. It's also a good couple of quid more expensive per meal for the sheer fact that it was in Oxford. The food itself was as good as expected however.

La comida llegó rápidamente y era muy sabroso - esto es lo que los 2 puntos son para. Sin nadie en el bar durante largos períodos de tiempo, después de 15 minutos fui a preguntar por nuestras bebidas (2 martinis expresos enlatados) y me avisaron que el gerente había subido a ver si tenían alguno. Dicho gerente apareció unos minutos después para decirnos que solo había 1 disponible y nos gustaría una alternativa. El 1 EM llegó junto con la pinta alternativa y era una bebida de aspecto muy triste - sin espuma en absoluto. Reembolsado 36 p que no puedo entender en absoluto! Ve a las otras Wetherspoons al otro lado de la ciudad.

Great Wetherspoons and tends to be the quieter one in Oxford but appears to be lacking investment for that reason. Staff are very friendly and the service is very prompt. Beer is well kept and food was of typical Wetherspoons standard.

Great local custom; polite customer service. Standard fayre, great drinks on tap and bottles. Cheaper by the bottle but house dry white economical and great to lose weight if on a strict regimen diet wise.

Guy behind the bar was so horrible made me want to leave he was in a foul mood and ruined my night

Just out for the day in Oxford , when we came across this sign on this town house , and now JD Wetherspoons , and made me laugh at The Four Candles , was the greatest comedy sketch ever by the two Ronnies Four Candles :)

Se le servirá una tostada (gluten) con un desayuno de libertad (sin gluten) que declara que no hay gluten en su tabla de alergias, adición extraña y realmente no apto para celíacos. Definitivamente, el personal necesita ser educado y no ofrecer opciones veganas / vegetarianas de gluten como sin gluten cuando definitivamente no lo son. Señalar la tabla de alergias nunca debe ser el alcance del conocimiento de alguien cuando trabaja con alimentos. Realmente decepcionado, pero no realmente impactado, ya que sin gluten es terrible cuando está fuera y especialmente porque la gente lo ve como una dieta de moda.

We called into the Four Candles for breakfast, whilst we was in Oxford for the day. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was hot and plenty full, set us up for the day. We called in later on for a drink, on our way to catch the bus back to the Peartree Park and Ride, and the staff remembered us. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad think haha.

Stopped by for my regular stop off in Wetherspoons while I was travelling home. I was a bit earlier than usual so ordered a full English breakfast, it turned up cold, sent it back and second one was cold too. Just ate it as I had a long day ahead of me and was hungry. Complained to the staff after, no real apology. Complained to one of the managers who said she'd have a word with the kitchen. I sat back down for about 45 minutes before I left. I thought someone might pop over with a proper apology or some explanation but nothing more was said. My son was a pub manager and I know he would have been mortified that a customer was unhappy and would have been straight over with an explanation or apology. Very poor customer service. Will not be returning.

Given the price you pay, can't complain about this place, will keep visiting.

Good, clean, friendly Wetherspoons for breakfast!

Worst breakfast I've ever had in my life. Obviously yesterdays "reheated" junk. Warmish bread - toast. Ice cold plates. The "mushroom" had obviously been reheated a dozen times. Sausages, again been reheated for a few weeks. The bacon was from the neolithic period. And the beans /eggs were from another planet. This place will kill somebody with their lax food safety. Avoid - eat some gum from the pavement, it's safer.

Typical larger "spoon". Decent menu of your typical pub food is pretty good quality, especially considering the very reasonable prices. Rather loud and not much of an atmosphere. Staff is friendly, but struggling a bit.

The food was average at best, lacked flavour but at least was hot. The airconditioning inside was freezing cold and we couldn't wait to get back outside. Don't recommend.

Making my first visit to Oxford since 1999. Jorvic and Paulicarus on first ever visit. On the way into town from the station we spotted this Spoons. A pleasant stop. Good real ale selection. Markedly more expensive than The Exchange Banbury but still good value. £2.49 for a pint of real ale. Named after a famous comedy sketch ( YouTube Ronnie Barker fork handles or four candles.) by Ronnie Barker who schooled two doors down. Two floors of seating plus a few front pavement seats.

The new Manager Perry is absolutely brilliant. The Ale quality is night and day compared to last month on my last visit. Can’t wait to make the Candles my regular again.

We had breakfast here several times and of course pints too. A little tip: there is a small breakfast (without sausage) for 2.XX pounds and that alone really fills your stomach! Nice service and coffee flat rate. Very authentic. We really enjoyed it here!

What you see is what you get. Went for a drink with several friends. Brilliant pricing. Friendly feel!

Service is abysmal...no welcome, and you're honoured if the staff do break off their chat to actually serve anyone. Tables are dirty even when cleared, which isn't often. It's a pity, because the food, standard Wetherspoon's, is ok, as is the atmosphere (unless you hit a football fan-day, in which case avoid like the plague!).

One of our favourite places. Excellent location, service and prices. Food is delicious, great deals including a drink. The only thing is when it's really busy it gets pretty noisy (no music makes you hear the conversation more). It's right opposite the Westgate and near the castle. Superb place.

Visited this place while visiting Oxford. We shared a ham and mushroom pizza. The place is a bit grotty. Staff are very average. Wouldn't use this place again. Stick with the plaza at rugeley.

Great food with friendly staff. Pub needs a makeover, but then the hotel and ASDA at the same location both look run down. Staff seemed to have an issue with the computer ordering system and, despite there being plenty of staff and only 75% capacity food took 45 minutes to be brought to the table

Dirtiest pub I have ever been to Tables sticky food left on tables empty glasses left on Table Ordered 2 cocktails could see then left on the end of the bar took 20 minutes I had to collect myself although the staff kept walking up the stairs and down and walking past empty glasses and plates (I was thinking please take some plates or glasses back down with you) it was actually winding me up. No leadership terrible service lazy staff

Good location to start and finish a pub crawl as it's pretty close to the station. Friendly atmosphere with a good selection of cheap beers, although the Guinness was off, which upset one of the lads in our group 😁 Around £18 for 6 pints 👍🏼
