My husband bought afternoon tea as a gift for me and a friend for £39.50 each. We thought the booking was for the Alice restaurant but were led to another dining room, which was comfortable and well-appointed. The initial embarrassment of having to phone him from the table to confirm his credit card details was not a good start - we felt that other people in the room were listening and looking at us. The tea, when eventually brought to the table was cold and we had to send it back. When fresh tea arrived there was no accompanying milk so we had to ask for some. The sandwiches were adequate (four each, different fillings), scones were lovely (two each, one plain, one with fruit, with jam and cream), cakes were lovely (four each, different types). The service was slow and the waiter uncommunicative at best. An older lady, part of a group, who sat near us, struggled to move an armchair nearer to their table whilst the waiter, who was wiping down tables nearby, ignored her when she obviously needed help. The service charge was included in the bill at 12.5%. Therefore we paid just over £88.00 for what we considered a below par afternoon tea. I will not be visiting again and would not recommend to anyone.

Great service. Food suffers from too few (and mediocre) sandwiches and too much (though very good) scones and cream/jam. Excellent teas and high quality English sparkling wine. 'The Alice' restaurant attempts to be elegant. It was indeed comfortable but the pink settees and 'modernist' artistic representations of 'Alice in Wonderland' didn't work for us. The room is also too large and not thus not intimate enough.

More care needed at these prices! Good points: lovely, warm scones with great jam. BUT: One of us had gluten free afternoon tea, which was pre-ordered with a month’s notice. NO cakes were provided. There were small pastilles provided instead. That’s really poor. If you advertise gluten free afternoon tea, provide gluten free cake. It’s not difficult. The bread for the ordinary afternoon tea was very dry - was it stale? The service - oh dear! We had booked for 4.30pm. We had not finished at 4.50 (there is a surprise, right???), but - mid mouthful - we were told “I’m closing now, shall I get your bill?” We were informed we could order other things, but through the waiters at the bar (yeah, okay, so just ask them to do our bill then!). That’s so poor. We felt rushed, just 20 minutes into the afternoon tea. Minor point coming, but it just says how little care is taken: In a room with plenty of tables for two, we had a table with three chairs. Just move the extra chair, it takes 30 seconds. Now, normally I wouldn’t care much about this. But it seems symbolic of the difference between don’t care and care. Disappointing.

Afternoon tea as a meal in itself is a tradition the Randolph is keeping up very well. It is old fashioned and stylish, served in a spacious, comfortable drawing room with a choice of armchairs and upright chairs at tables. Quiet pleasant background music. Paintings of Oxford on the wall. The cakes look pretty on their three-tiered cake-stands. The tea itself was excellent - proper leaf tea served in a pot with a jug of milk and a strainer. There is a big choice of varieties of tea, and I thought the Darjeeling was top quality. And you can get as much as you want - ask for a second pot if you like. The scones also were excellent, very fresh with gorgeous clotted cream and jam. As for the tiny mushroom tarts, I'd like to have a complete meal just of them. I could have done without horseradish in the smoked salmon sandwiches, and the turkey ones didn't need stuffing in them. Cranberry is sufficient. All this comes at a high price, but it is the Randolph, so you'd expect that.

Don't bother. It's very expensive for what you get, and the pianist is so awful that I did at one point think of getting up and asking her to move aside so I could play chopsticks instead. It's a pity, as I think that Graduate have done a great job with the rest of the hotel, and I love the Alice and the cocktail bar. They do killer cocktails.

My son, daughter-in-law and I made a last minute decision to have afternoon (cream) tea at the Randolph (b/c the Ashmolean was closing early for a private function). The menu did not have written prices but the tea and scones at an eye-watering £17.50/head seemed the lesser of two evils. We asked for cold water to drink as soon as we arrived and hot water to add to tea once the tea was served. Neither arrived. We waved and waved to get eye contact with our waiter - to no avail. Once we also ran out of jam, I walked to the waiter to get help. Some time later the hot and cold water and jam came with a big dose of bad attitude. The serving of jam for nine scones was, I am sure, the same size pot they would give one person with three scones. The bill did come promptly once we asked for it. I was more than appalled to see an added service charge - without any note that the charge was optional. I asked for it to be removed and it was. I have never, ever, ever had such overpriced bad service. Be warned. Stay away from the Randolph Hotel.

The restaurant was shut for lunch but we were directed to book a table in the lounge. On arrival we found that the lounge menu was served in both the lounge and the Morse bar, so opted for the Morse bar which has a nice atmosphere. The overworked man serving in the bar was quite distracted and it was a challenge to get an order taken. My husband’s haddock and chips were ok. I ordered a prawn Rose Marie sandwich and the soup of the day, which was carrot and parsnip. The sandwich arrived - no prawns evident, a thin smear of pink something in the sandwich with a bit of lettuce, with no butter, and stale bread! I brought this to the attention of staff. They apologised and promised to bring me the right thing straight away. In the meantime I drank the soup - a thin soup which was tepid despite being brought to me in a metal bowl with lid. Didn’t taste home made. Unsatisfying but I was waiting for my sandwich. The second version of the sandwich was eventually delivered - yes, butter on the bread this time, but the same pink smear! The manager assured me that the prawns had been whipped into the sauce, so I started eating it. It was smoked salmon pate! Not prawns Rose Marie at all! I showed it to the overworked man at the bar. He said the manager would come over. She didn’t. I was hungry and still had no sandwich!Eventually we asked for the bill and the manager brought the bill, apologising, and having deleted the food costs. I left hungry and unsatisfied. Surely a prawn Rose Marie sandwich listed on the menu is not too much to ask?

We went on Monday for afternoon tea and it was overall a disappointing experience. The tea pot was left on the table for me but I had to ask for a cup and it took a hour for the food to arrive. The sandwiches were good, the scones o.k. and the cakes very ordinary - with a glass of champagne I thought the price of £44.50 per person plus service already added to the bill was poor value against other afternoon teas I have had elsewhere. Definitely would not go back.

I used to go to the Randolph for afternoon tea when I was a student in Oxford (about a million years ago). It was a real treat, one to be saved up for, or to take indulgent relatives to. Not any more. I took my little girl, expecting something really special, and it was so disappointing. My daughter's apple juice had gone off (fizzing slightly), the sandwiches were doorstops, the cakes were dull and, in the case of the macaroon, overcooked. For two afternoon teas, no alcohol, no extras, we paid nearly £100. The bill came with service already added, but then when I was handed the card machine, I was asked if I would like to add a tip. The place was practically empty (in August!) and I'm not surprised.

We went there for a light lunch. I ordered a poached egg with salmon which was good but a very small portion with no bread. My husband ordered a sandwich which was supposed to be done using sourdough bread: it turned out to be a very expensive sandwich made out of tin bread served with some crisps. We had to ask to have our glasses changed as they were dirty. Table cloth was also stained. All in all a disappointing experience though the room we were served lunch was beautiful with a lovely view.

I've had afternoon tea here several times and was never before disappointed. A beautiful period drawing room with crisp white linen, attentive and well trained staff - it's like going back to days gone by, for a treat. But... In November we went there and had a terrible experience - the food was - well - not even average, we were shoved in a back room and the staff seemed indifferent. But as this was unusual for this place, I wrote to them, explained the situation, and they offered us a free afternoon to make it up. I can honestly say it was perfect in every way. The food was lovely and plentiful - freshly prepared and beautifully presented. The staff couldn't do enough for us, and we were even offered a complimentary glass of bubbly. We sat there a long time waiting for the play to start round the corner in The Playhouse (that we'd booked earlier) and despite the fact that we were the last ones there by quite a long time, we didn't feel rushed or in the way. Thank you Randolph - you redeemed yourselves, and we will be back again - next time we need a treat.

This hotel where I used to go to quite frequently has lost all its glamour, its style and sparkle. The coffee/morning rooms makes any Costa Coffee look luxurious... Gone are the days where you could enjoy a morning coffee, with newspapers. Gone are the napkins and....they don't even bother to supply paper ones. The caffetiere we ordered arrived from somewhere (there was only a coffee machine behind the bar where we were seated) and the quality of the coffee was abysmal. In the glory days - which is not even that long ago - the coffee came with beautiful biscuits. But alas, also the biscuits are a memory too. We arrived at 5pm to be seated at a small coffee table and two chairs not really the relaxed comfy seats we hoped for i asked if it was possible to move to a different table to which we where allowed they eventally came and cleared the dirty plates we sat for a further 30 minutes before we were given menues and the table still hadn't been reset, when we ordered we asked if my husband could have mainly ham and beef sandwiches as he doesnt like lobster or egg the waiter said that wouldnt be a problem but when it came out the'd not done what we'd requested then as i picked up the first sandwich the bread was so dry so i asked for fresh from a different waiter who took them back eventually some sandwiches came out I don't think they where any fresher and I am pretty sure they just put them on a different plate, dry scones that are more like rock cakes and the tea didn't come out with the food and we had to ask for clean plates to eat our cakes on, service was awful very slow and they just kept getting it wrong, they didn't come to see if we were ok or required anything else it was rather expensive at £44.50 per person which you don't mind paying if it's reflected in the food and service and we were so disappointment that it did'nt reflect either, we were really looking forward to it as it was for my husband's birthday but unfortunately it was terrible, it's such a shame as we had been before in 2014 and rated it as the best afternoon tea we'd ever had and excellent value at £25 We told everyone how great it was but we won't be recommending it again, we did express our disappointment to the waiter who did apologise and offer us some champagne but as my husband said if they can't get the basics right fresh bread, soft scones, good service then there in trouble which is a shame as it's a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city but next time we visit I think we'll eat elsewhere.

My daughter in law went to reception to ask about the delay and eventually a young man arrived and took us to the table without even an apology. The rest of the service continued to be very slow and although one does not want to rush the experience it appeared that they were short staffed. The tea itself was fine although I did not feel it was up to the standard of a couple of years ago. While the staff were most helpful and attentive the afternoon tea at the Randolph was absolutely dreadful. A few tiny, mediocre sandwiches accompanied by cakes which had clearly been sitting in the fridge for some considerable time and a pot of lukewarm tea. For this 'feast' we paid thirty pounds each plus service charge. We then retired to the Morse Bar for over priced cocktails and wine consumed in a shabby, grubby, draughty room. Clearly this hotel is trading on past glories and the notoriety of being mentioned regularly on television. My next visit to Oxford will include food at the nearest Wetherspoons where I will get unpretentious value for money in clean, warm and pleasant surroundings.

We were very well attended by Katerina (I think that was her name). The ambience was super and the afternoon tea left us full for the rest of the day. The sandwiches were traditional and made to perfection. The scones were warm and great with the lemon curd. The cakes were out of this world! Tea was also lovely.

My husband and I are from Norway and have been to Oxford several times. This time it was our 44th weddinganiversary, and we decided upon afternoon tea at the Randolph. We have been wanting to do this for some time, so we went in to book at 11 am, to be sure that everything would go smoothly when we arrived at 4 o'clock. When we arrived at 4, they couldn't find our booking but gave us a table. We had ordered a quite expensive tea with champagne and were looking forward to it. After 40 minutes we had received nothing, not even been given a glass of water. (30 degrees outside) The girl, who was really nice, had disappeared, and we gave up. Told the girl on reception we couldn't wait any longer, and left. Very disappointed as we have been thinking of doing this for years...

The venue is lovely and the cakes were very good. However, there was no-one at the desk when we arrived to show us our table and it continued like that all afternoon. Long, long wait to be served (we chased several times - perhaps 45 minutes to get the tea?); champagne was served warm; tea served 10 minutes before any milk was brought to table; scones served without any jam or cream (brought 10 minutes later after we chased), most staff seemed not to speak or understand English. Very poor management/training.

Tea at the Randolph should be a must do event on a trip to Oxford. The hotel is lovely and right in the middle of town. The tea itself is nice, if now amazing. But it's the detail and the service that really let this place down. We sat and watched as various potential customers cam in and waited awkwardly as there were no staff to greet or seat them. Then there are suddenly four members of staff, then there are none. Tables are left dirty and uncleared as the directionless staff try to cope with only a mll number of guests. Was this place needs is a good supervisor or head waiter who is there to make sure all goes smoothly. But the waiter who seemed to have that role was never there. To top it all they served the tea with no cream for the scones. We were told 'someone has gone out to buy some cream.' Afternoon tea with no cream? It's all so badly organised, whoever runs this hotel needs to really examine what sort of service they provide. This place should and could be a gold mine and a brilliant addition to things to do in Oxford. At the moment all is is in a disappointment.
