The Royal Oak in Oxford

Probablemente el peor almuerzo de domingo que he tenido. El servicio no solo era terrible con personal joven interesado y no capacitado - la comida no era comestible. La carne asada parecía un trozo de cuero y las verduras eran básicamente un plato de papilla. Después de explicarle a la gerente nuestra experiencia ella respondió “¿qué quieres que hagamos al respecto?” Por favor, no malgaste su dinero - esto realmente no vale la pena el dinero gastado en la impresión de los menús !!!

Absolutamente terrible servicio - llegó a la 1 pm, la comida llegó a las 2 . 10 pm. La camarera no pudo molestarse en mostrarnos a nuestra mesa, ni explicar que era orden de código QR. Nos sentamos y esperamos 15 minutos antes de notar una pequeña pegatina junto a los condimentos. Pedimos bebidas - la misma camarera hosca vino 15 minutos después y nos dijo que nos pasáramos las bebidas entre nosotros. Después de pedir la comida esperamos 40 minutos. Me acerqué a la otra camarera y le pregunté por nuestra comida. Dijo que estaba siendo chapado. Esto tomó otros 10 minutos. La comida llegó - no se dan disculpas. La comida estaba caliente, no caliente, pero sabroso que es la única razón por la que he dado 1 estrella. Nos hubiera gustado una jarra de agua para la mesa, pero ningún personal volvió a aparecer para comprobar. Una vez que terminamos de comer, pudimos escuchar una fuerte discusión que venía de la cocina. El chef luego salió gritando a las camareras que tenía platos listos para el servicio de 5 mesas que se estaban enfriando. Fue impactante. Esperamos 15 minutos más esperando que el personal despejara platos para el postre, pero no - nadie vino. Había puesto una petición especial en el formulario de reserva preguntando sobre una tarta de cumpleaños. Nadie volvió a mí y estaba bastante claro que no tenía sentido preguntar. Los miembros de la familia habían viajado más de 200 millas para esta celebración - fue vergonzoso. Definitivamente no recomendaría. ¡Un desastre absoluto!

Great place for a quiet drink or to work remotely, lots of little alcoves!

Un buen pub en una buena ubicación con un defecto importante... vasos sucios almacenados bajo los grifos de cerveza y el personal que no reconoció que los vasos sucios que huelen a cerveza rancio no es aceptable desde el punto de vista de la higiene pública.

Great food. Very welcoming staff.

Having tried numerous pubs recently in oxford recently since our daughter started university, this is so far our favourite. The food is a little expensive but much better than everywhere else we've tried overall a great cosy pub experience.

We had a group buffet dinner for about 30 people. This is the second time we have done a dinner like this and I think the fact we have come back speaks for itself. We love the room where we were placed. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff all incredibly friendly and helpful. We love this pub.

Rude and incompetent staff, dry food

Muy adecuado por lo tanto para comer y beber en el Royal Oak enfrente para nuestra reunión. Nos cuidaron bien en una habitación reservada para nosotros, las opciones de comida son excelentes y muy sabroso. El personal era muy agradable y servicial y las comidas llegaron con un retraso mínimo. Era el lugar ideal para un evento de este tipo. Gracias Royal Oak.

We searched out the Royal Oak based on the positive reviews we read. It was a good decision. We found a quiet space in the hotel and enjoyed a lovely meal. The staff were very friendly. I would highly recommend The Royal Oak.

Great staff, excellent food, good service!

This place rocks. Well organized for food and drink, and makes the use of an old building with lots of different seating areas. Noisy when busy with people, not music, so not as noisy as other pubs. Definitely recommend.

Dit is Oxfort op zijn best! Wat een fijne omgeving, allemaal aparte plekken: straalt één en al gezelligheid uit! Vriendelijk personeel. Heerlijk gegeten, tot aan dessert toe, echt super. Perfect te bestellen met QRcode. En zeker snel geserveerd. Top!

Love this place. Helped by very good beers . Wonderful beer garden.too are interesting in a good way , don’t expect aircon! Food is unfussy but excellent, all set in a quintessential English village

I’ve heard that there is a Michelin one-star restaurant in Oxford. Their signature dish is a large roast chicken, but it’s only available on weekends, not on weekdays. The restaurant has a beautiful environment, though the service and taste are just average. Overall, it’s a somewhat nice-looking British restaurant. The burgers are almost the same as those at other places. The sandwiches look good and are quite large. The only surprise is the chocolate brownie, with ice cream on top and a warm egg base underneath, creating a contrast of hot and cold, though it’s a bit too sweet overall. At average £25 per person, it’s a relatively cost-effective restaurant.

Visited the Royal Oak for a light dinner with a visitor to Oxford. The service behind the bar is always fantastic. It gets extremely busy in there so would recommend booking and expect a lively louder atmosphere.

What a wonderful pub!! I popped in on Thursday for lunch and was pleased to see they offered a sandwich+drink option for £11 (NB. weekdays only). The fish goujon sandwich I had was quite honestly the nicest I've eaten in a very long time! Perfectly cooked goujons in fresh soft bread, with tasty tartare, lettuce & sauce. The accompanying skin-on fries were delicious too. The pub itself is a wonderful historic building with lots of cosy places to sit, and the staff were very welcoming & friendly. I highly recommend lunch here and I'll definitely be back soon!

Went here for lunch with our family of 7 and we all found something good. They were also very accommodating to food allergies, providing a menu online where you can filter the menu items based on different allergens. Great place, great service.

Beautiful pub, very cosy and welcoming. The little table by the bar had a nice atmosphere about it. We had the Pork Belly roast and the steak & ale pie both were delicious, one of the best meals we have had in a very long time, highly recommend eating here. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

A stalwart and fan favourite of our lab

This pub has the unique distinction of having the absolute worst food that we had in the UK, and this includes the airplane food on the way there and back. The food was flavorless and the texture was messed up. My kids mentioned they didn't know how it was possible to make such awful food. It was so bad that my teenage son almost cried because he was so hungry but was having trouble not gagging as he ate. This child hasn't cried for years and the food brought him low. The drinks were fine, the atmosphere was very pleasant, and the staff was polite. The only way I'd go there again would be to order drinks, but you'd have to pay me to eat the food.

We had a great time at the Royal Oak. Quite busy at Sunday lunchtime, but not overcrowded. The staff were friendly and professional. We had fish & chips, and the steak and ale pie - and both were excellent. A nice way to spend a (rainy) Sunday afternoon :-)

Nice pub and a bit quieter than the city centre pubs, although it's opposite the maths institute and so I'm sure there are times when it's not so quiet!

I have been coming to the Royal Oak for many years now. I mostly have a pint of real ale. The ales are well kept. The resident is the Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter and it is always a treat. I have eaten at the Royal Oak and the food is ok. Pretty much general pub grub of a good standard. Worth a mention are the staff. Tonight I watched the young lady working non stop cleaning tables, serving food and behind the bar. She was polite helpful, friendly and professional. I didn’t get her name but she was a credit to the pub and to herself. I did mention the above to the manager as I left.

Dined here last night and had an excellent meal. I had the hake with gunpowder potatoes(not sure what they are but they were delicious)and spinach. Feel I have to put a review as this was one of the nicest restaurant meals I have had in ages. Keep up the good work!!

One of our favorite bars in Oxford. Good beers on tap with a good menu and lots of fun different rooms / spaces to choose from. They also have outdoor seating for the warmer months. Nice, clean and bigger bathrooms (a rarity for old English pubs.)

A warm welcome - a good selection of seating and beers. Good atmosphere while watching the rugby. Toilets refreshingly clean and tidy.

Best pub food I have ever tried in oxford. The pie was great together with the camembert cheese and sourdough bread. Fish and chips nice and crunchy too. A side note, it's a little bit too dark in the tables at the back of the main dining area.

Disappointing. 2 of 4 cask beers off. 3 items ordered from menu not available - pie, chicken schnitzel, chicken salad. Chaotic behind bar. Slow service - tour group given priority. Food not great. No apologies. Particularly disappointing as meeting friends who had been impressed on previous visit.

Loud and stuffy, with poor ventilation and overcrowded rooms. The staff were slow (some people waited >10 minutes for a drink at the bar). The beer and wine choices are poor. The salad was nice though.

I booked a table online several months in advance and it was easy to do this. I received immediate confirmation of the booking as well as several reminders nearer the time. The menu was varied and interesting. The food was delicious and good quality and our party of ten all enjoyed the food. The staff were friendly, patient and helpful and I would definitely eat here again. We all had a great visit.

There were items missing from the menu that we only found out after we order. Staff let's say they were way too relaxed...one of the kitchen team sitting next to us and doing paperwork. Think she could do it somewhere else..staff looked way too relaxed almost uninterested. Food was just good-nothing exceptional. Don't think we will be visiting again provided the other options in the area.

I have fond memories of the Royal Oak and while the decor changes a bit the cosy atmosphere does not. Great to be back.

Atmosphere was lovely, staff were great. Wasn’t keen on the idea of eating my dinner and having dogs being walked through next to us. Quite off putting infact. Overall, would definitely come back

I used to recommend this place to my clients for dinner almost every week since I am based just around the corner from the pub, but I won't anymore for the main reason being the front of house staff: who are unwilling to listen and just couldn't care any less! I ordered a burger and even made an agreement with the barmaid that the burger MUST NOT contain the tomato salsa relish - what happened? It did come with the tomato salsa relish! Some people have allergies. We asked if we could have the goat cheese salad with the mains, it arrived much earlier than the rest of the dishes and when told the server, she literally 🤷‍♀️ raised her hands as if to say: What do you want me to do about it!? and without saying a word, walked away. You'd expect: 'We're sorry about that'! which is normally the tradition if you work in customer service. I can give this pub a second chance but fear they will continue to have their serious issues with their staff attitude. We even had a similar issue soon after lockdown when we literally had to tell staff off as soon as we walked in for being impolite.

Had a really great lunch here with friends recently, the pub are always so accommodating to my dietary requirements and are happy to make swaps and changes to suit my diet! The staff are always so helpful and friendly. The food always good!

Christmas lunchtime event for 30 work colleagues. Good food, good service, very pleased.

We went as a party of five for our Christmas lunch. The food was really tasty, the pub is really cosy, and the waitresses were really lovely - generally a great afternoon. Nonetheless, one of our party had to drop out on the day from sickness and, as informed by a rather brusque chap in charge, they have a really strange 'policy' where they insist on cooking and serving all three of the missing person's courses anyway, and then charging full price to watch it go to waste... Literally the most bizarre arrangement I've come across in a restaurant - whatever happened to the old no-show-and-lose-your-deposit? We thought about taking it outside for a charitable donation of course, but alas there were no starving people on the streets of Jerico.

Absolutely scrumptious Christmas meal. Every dish was top quality, and decent portions too which was a massive relief! The service was also outstanding. Definitely planning to go again next year as we were so impressed.

The food was mainly quite nice, but the whole place seemed to be quite seriously overbooked. We ended up with quite a long wait (but not las long as some other customers). All the staff were really helpful and friendly (which was amazing really because I think the work environment must be fairly stressful -- or at least it seemed to be yesterday).

Very busy pub but good food which did take a while as it was busy and unfortunately our order hadn't gone through when I paid. The manageress apologised when the mistake was discovered and free drinks were offered which we accepted with grace. I will return as it was a lovely place to eat.

I thought the food was fine (fish and chips) and my mother loved the atmosphere, but my father had a bad experience with the pie. There was a good selection of drinks and service was awesome. The dessert (crumble) was tasty too.

Lovely Saturday lunch with the family. The meals were excellent, though it took a while to come out to us. Not very busy, with plenty of spare tables but they were probably booked for later. Great pint of Doom Bar too.

only 1 bar so always queuing for a drink, outside area is decent although no lights when it’s dark, ordered food and ended up paying £7 for 4 small pieces of chicken, definitely over priced and won’t be ordering food again.

The roast was very nice, same as the fish and chips. It’s a nice pub to go with the significant other or with family. Service unfortunately wasn’t great, very slow and hardly anyone came to see if we were doing ok or missing anything. Would’ve been nice to get a bit more human interaction, even though the QR code is super cool (and part of the order never came through).

My first time at the Royal Oak .What a beautiful pub. Decided to have Sunday lunch Roast beef and all the trimmings. What a meal absolutely lovely. We even asked more extra Gravy and Mint sauce. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a great host Paula who looked after us. We will definitely be back

Our favorite items on the menu are the halloumi fries and the bangers & mash. It is clean, the staff is friendly and the washrooms are clean. The music is great. The food arrives quickly and the portions are really good. Great value for the money!

Getting a beer takes forever. Someone was in front of me getting lots of beers which is fine but the other employee was just looking around and drinking beer. They were out of fish and ships for some reason (it was 7:30pm). Can you imagine a British pub unable to serve fish and ships? I got some other fish which was a big mistake given the pathetic state of the dish. Get a burger instead.

Most things par, except gluten-free food options, which are sub-par by modern standards. Really nice atmosphere and - for those without allergies to wheat - good food.

I very much enjoyed the whole experience. The food (Sunday Roast) was delicious & there was plenty of it. Pudding, the creme brulee, was also above average. Maria, whom I met on Sat. when I came in to make a reservation, was very friendly & helpful. Please let her know that I had a wonderful time dining there. It's a lovely place, as well. My only very minor issue was that I wasn't aware that after being served the main course, I would need to go to the bar to order pudding, so was feeling rather ignored for a while. However, that was the only negative aspect of the entire visit.
