We just returned from a one night stay at the Black Swan. It is a beautiful restaurant and the rooms are very cosy. We were on their Hunker Down package which included early check in at 1430 (normal check in is 1630), a half bottle of champagne and a therapy kit with bath salts / body moisturiser and body scrubber. Our meal was delicious and it was impressive how many of the ingredients were grown in the kitchen garden or sourced sustainably and locally. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable and put us at ease. It was the right amount of courses and we were well fed by the end of the dinner. The breakfast in the morning was also delicious with home made juices, yoghurts , toast, pastries and a full English. It is not cheap but I think the quality is certainly worth the price. My only one gripe (and it is small) is that I do not think the scallop course should have been an upsell of £25pp. I think that should have been included. Cheese courses I don't mind as up sells because not everyone likes them but that was the only one thing that I did not like about it and it has been mentioned in previous reviews. We would return.

Never again. Food was lovely, the landlady (this is who I think she was, as she never actually introduced herself) was aggressive in her manor and rude. To explain, I had taken my elderly aunt and her friend out for Sunday lunch. I ordered tap water, as I don't drink alcohol nor fizzy drinks, and I was driving anyway. My aunt and her friend also ordered tap water, as they are of an age where they don't drink in great quantities for needing the loo. We also ordered our food. I had brought a small squeezy bottle of cordial with me and put some in my water, as I don't like pub cordial. My aunt asked for a squirt in her water and so did her friend. Whilst we were eating our food, a bolshy woman came over and told us we couldn't bring our own drinks and gave us a telling off. I was flabbergasted. I explained that I didn't like pub cordial, and that we would be ordering desserts and coffees, as well as having the main meal, to be told "we are a business not a charity" and she continued in her aggressive manor, telling us she would charge us for 3 cordials or the tap water. She did not have a quiet word, she was rather vocal, so much so, the table opposite asked what the "trouble" was. I told the woman/landlady that we would be finishing our meals and leaving without ordering desserts nor coffees. She went onto say the desserts are complimentary anyway (apparently, when you order a Sunday lunch, which my aunt and her friend had, desserts are complimentary). Begs the question, are they complimentary or is the cost of a dessert factored into the price of a Sunday lunch, afterall, they are a business, not a charity? I could completely understand her stance had I ordered water and poured my own whiskey into the water, but not for a squirt of cordial. She snatched the remaining water from the table and I asked her to go away, as she was spoiling our meal, to which she did. When the lady on the opposite table asked what the trouble was and I was explaining, said woman appeared again, in the same aggressive manor. At this point we were leaving anyway so we did just that. Our bill was just over £50 but would have been £20 or so more had we had a pleasant experience and stayed for desserts and coffees. It upset my aunt so much she burst into tears when she got into my car. SHAME ON YOU COACH AND HORSES!
