Arrived (5pm) but no staff to greet us or serve us at the bar until a customer went to find someone. Starter of salmon and crab was really good unfortunately the main of Xmas dinner not so. Brussels and broccoli way over cooked to the point of being mushy, one small carrot, no Yorkshire pudding, no bread sauce or parsnips so not so festive, only a limited amount of gravy so overall disappointing. Maybe my expectations were too high. Waiting staff were good, we were surprised no Xmas music playing so not a festive atmosphere. For the money not great.

I was there with friends that use the Royal Oak regularly we had Sunday dinner and pie all the food was well cooked and very tasty my only complaint would be my beef on the Sunday dinner I couldn't cut never mind chew so I left it . The veg ,roast potatoes and yorkshire puds were fab my friends had turkey roasts and left nothing my Don had pie and polished off everything. Despite the beef I'd definitely go back the whole evening was brilliant thanks

I’ve been here a couple of times before and it was quite a good experience. However on this occasion I was very disappointed. There is no Light Bites lunchtime menu other than sandwiches which is very unimaginative and uninspiring. So my friends and I had a starter with fries. I had a prawn cocktail which I’ve had before and it was nice and had a generous amount of prawns. This time, however, there were about 5 prawns in it. At a push maybe 6. These were not king prawns you understand, just normal sized cocktail prawns. I kept thinking there must be more in the middle or at the bottom so kept on eating the lettuce in Marie Rose sauce until I’d eaten most if it and realised that no, there weren’t any more prawns. I should have complained but a bit difficult to prove there are no prawns when you’ve eaten most of it and in company it’s embarrassing to make a fuss. I did mention it to the waiter when he collected the dishes but he just mumbled something and walked off. I won’t be going back here again. Such a rip off!!!

After a difficult year, we booked a meal for my dad’s 80th and we were looking forward to our evening based on past reviews. On entry the staff were great, took our cake and set up a tab. The place is immaculate and the waiting on staff and bar staff were superb. The food was good, particularly the steak pies (I presume from across the road) and the pizzas. However there were a couple of issues that I did raise with the manager, Dan at the end. I made the fatal mistake of bringing a bit of paper confetti and putting it on the table. I didn’t quite realise what a crime it was until Dan sent a waitress to tell me quite loudly in front of all the other diners that confetti is not allowed, they have an anti confetti policy. I felt proper chastised and embarrassed, we promised to take it home with us. We did leave the paper serviettes so not sure why they couldn’t have cleared it all up together. We were well aware from our email that our table was held until 8.30 having arrived at 6. However at 7.40 Dan sent someone else to ask us to move to another part of the pub as they wanted the table back. We were finishing our meal and we might have stayed for another drink but their attitude put us off to be honest. I felt sorry for the poor girls who had been sent to do the managers dirty work. When I witnessed them talking at the bar they looked embarrassed. To conclude if you want to visit somewhere with above average food, a nice decor, lovely waitresses but don’t mind feeling unwelcome this is the venue. If you want excellent customer service from all members of staff visit St Martha’s or Navios.

Wow, what a difference from the last time I was there. Admittedly, it was some years ago, when they had a Pool table and played in the local league, in that period it was your standard pub that served pub meals. It has been closed and reopened a couple of times since then, but the guys/gals who own it now have done a real modernisation job. Very pleasant, open, light. Probably classes itself more as a restaurant that serves pub style drinks 🍸. Even changed where you enter the establishment! Service was very efficient, pleasant and attentive. Large free car park. Off the beaten track, so unfortunately someone will have to drive. Just be warned - they don't take cash. Card/Digital payments only. That won't affect most punters, I know. 100% worth a visit. I will certainly return at another time to check out the atmosphere in a standard evening situation rather than an organised event in an afternoon.

Steak & ale pie, salt and pepper prawns, and 2no. soft drinks for £34.90 - we thought this was good value for money. Service and food arriving were very quick. Part of my order was incorrect which was sorted without hesitation when asked although if the presentation of your food bothers you, the pie looked like it had been punched! (doesn’t bother me personally). Both meals were good with the minor exception of my mashed potato which was hard on the edges, like microwave mashed potato/under heat lamp too long.

Shame really as we had heard good things about this place and from my understanding our experience was unusual. We ordered and had been waiting an hour and ten minutes for our food, people who came in after us had got their food, when we asked where our food was we were told it was the size of the gammon. We then waited another 25 minutes, when the food did arrive three meals were borderline inedible, the cesar salad chicken dry and over done, bacon so hard my mum couldn't chew it, fish fingers were grey and soggy, my child wouldn't touch them, fishcakes dry and mostly potato, my wofe vomited outside after eating them, when the gammon did come after everyone else had had theirs for 5 minutes I was expecting half a pig as we'd been waiting so long (an hour and 40 minutes at this point) but it was a regular size, covered in oil and grease with the eggs overdone. We did have a word with the manager and he gave us some money off which was nice but won't be going back, shame as looks lovely and well decorated. But would describe it is opening the cover to a Lord of the Rings book only to find out its a Mills and Boon.

We tried The Royal Oak for the first time since its refurbishment and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A massive difference from the old pub in every way. The whole feel of the place was great, well laid it, spacious and with a great vibe. The four meals we had were excellent, being a coeliac I was well catered for and looked after by our server who was polite, friendly and helpful. Prices were reasonable for food and drink with a feeling of not being ripped off for over inflated drinks like at so many establishments. Definitely recommend and will certainly be returning.

While we now live in Hampshire, we are originally from Cheshire and decided to spend our Golden Wedding anniversary in the county . Having enjoyed many family celebrations at the Royal Oak in the past, it seemed the ideal venue for our celebration. Despite the distance, we had excellent communication with Arran re setting a day and time, on Arran's advice we circulated the menu so guests could select their meal, which worked perfectly on the day. Right from the start, Dan was very helpful with such items as surprise flowers for my wife Jean along with our anniversary cake, along with celebration drinks. Dan was supported by Katie and Niamh, who were just excellent with their service and lovely nature as nothing was to much trouble even arranging the cake and flowers. So our choice was excellent and Dan and his team really make our anniversary so special. Thanks Dan.

Extremely POOR service! I visited here for some lunch with my family and children and it was the worst decision I made. Upon arrival with my party of 7 I asked for a table outside and asked if someone would come out and take the order and I was told that I needed to order at the bar. I had no issue with this whatsoever. Upon ordering the food at the bar, I also ordered drinks and was presented with a dirty tray with our drinks on it and was told I needed to take this to the table myself. I told the bar staff that I was disabled and asked if they could bring it out for me. When the waitress brought the drinks out (still on the dirty tray) we were missing 2 glasses for the 2 bottles of water we ordered. When I asked for some glasses the waitress said that it was busy, they didn’t have any clean ones and to wait and then I would need to go back inside to get some. It was a good job I asked because she never even addressed the fact. When the food finally came out, the waitress just put the starters on the table not even asking who they were for. The rest of the meals came out but there was no cutlery. When I asked for these I was told “I suppose I can go back in and get them for you”. I had also asked for sauces, etc and she came back out with the bottles empty. This meant that I then had to ask the waitress again for these and she went marching off. I’m sorry, but when I go for a meal I do not expect to be made to feel that I am putting the staff out. They are getting paid. Plus I paid £114 for the meals. I am not sure if the level of service is reduced if you sit outside, compared to inside, but no one actually told me this so I am unsure. However, if this is the case and the expectation is that they ONLY bring you the food, and you have to get your own cutlery, condiments, etc, then at least reduce the meal prices for customers sat outside who are not receiving this basic level of service. Honestly, this is the minimum I would expect when going for a meal. The waitress was very rude, had a face on her and made us feel as though we were putting her out! Not the environment I want to sit in when trying to enjoy a meal. It’s not surprising though, as you pay for your meal before you actually eat it, so she doesn’t have any incentive to provide good service for tips, etc. I am just thankful that her pay isn’t dependent on tips because I would worry for her financial welfare. To top it off, my 3 children went to play in the play area. Do not let your children do this as it is littered in glass. My son cut his finger on a piece of glass causing injury and his finger causing it to bleed. The “manager” came out to investigate and said that he could not see the glass where my son cut his finger and that my son had told him he had thrown it away in the play area. The manager was quite happy with that and walked off leaving this piece of glass in the play area. The glass was not hard to find and in fact we did find it and more and I have attached pictures of this. When I went back in to inform the manager so he could remove the glass from the play area, he verbally attacked me and my daughter causing a scene. When we tried to leave, he followed us outside ranting and raving uncontrollably and flapping his hands up and down which was very intimidating. He said we had all been rude from the minute we walked in (untrue) and if we did not like the service then not to come back. This is NOT the attitude I would expect from a manager as this is disgusting! And from this it is clear that the staff were talking about us. If asking for glasses to drink your drinks out of and cutlery to eat your food with is “being rude” then I don’t know what is. I intend to report this place to H&S as it is clear there is a lack of this in the play area. I wasn’t even told if they had recorded my grandsons injury in the accident book? Save yourselves the hassle that I had to endure and if you want to go for a nice meal, go the Hand and Trumpet - better service, nicer staff, and much better food.

Absolutely brilliant! Emailed Dan a week before our motorhome pub stopover to check availability (as I knew I’d be driving back from Wales and needing a break). He was extremely professional and welcoming with swift correspondence. Arrived at 12.15pm – nice large, safe car-park at a refurbished and very attractive ‘country’ pub. Checked in, spoke to Dan who was even more welcoming, friendly and helpful (discussing amenities and local facilities). I ordered lunch – which was really nice (and generous portions). Opted to eat in my motorhome – as I’ve a very nervous rescue dog, but Dan was again very accommodating and would have happily let my pooch inside for pub grub. Later on, I ordered an evening meal – great food again, and amazing customer service! They even brought the food to our van because the pub was busy. We stopped for Pizza today, ate outside in the sun and really enjoyed it. Probably the tastiest pizza I’ve ever had. The service was excellent, we got chatting to a chap called Dan, I think he is the manager. He couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming.

Both previous times we have been, the service has been okay, nothing to write about but recently came and the service was abysmal. Next table sat down after us, already had drinks and food ordered before we were seen to. Didn’t see anyone for about 30 minutes after we sat. Drinks took around 20 minutes, after we asked where they were they said the bar didn’t receive the order. One Waitress said don’t worry the drinks will be deducted as they are very sorry for the wait. Drinks were not deducted on the bill as stated, had to mention this. Then we were told only 1 could be deducted when they clearly said ‘drinks’. We explained the other waitress said ‘drinks’ and to that they were removed in the end. Sunday roast was dry and flavourless. The giant lumps of liquorice root (only flavour) found in 2x meals was enough to ruin the tastebuds for the entire meal. Very disappointed with this visit I’m sad to say.

The Food as usual was excellent. Staff are always friendly and acknowledge customers as soon as they walk in. They go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and also assist if you have any queries. We were informed of all the specials when we were seated and given the waitresses recommendation, her name was Penny. We went on a Birthday and they put candles in the desserts and came out singing Happy Birthday. We were told that the Lemon Cheesecake was out of stock so we ordered something else, instead of just getting us that Penny came back and said the Chef had found more of the cheesecake and would we like to swap, we would have been no the wiser if she hadn't informed us.

Wow wow wow ! What a fabulous place. We recently bought a camper van and found this place on one of the Facebook groups. You can stay over for free if you eat in the pub. We had a meal in the restaurant and I can honestly say the food, service was absolutely perfect. We even stayed in the pub after the meal rather than going back to the van. Everyone made us so welcome and will definitely be back soon.

We wanted somewhere new for lunch. We decided to give the Royal Oak a try. What a find! The welcome and service was brilliant throughout, so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We ordered two recommendations. The cheese and onion pie was amazing, tasting more cheesy than any "cheese pie" we've had in other restaurants. Also excellent was a daily special, lamb burger, coarse and flavourful just like home-made. We thought the modernised decor was nice. The toilets are exceptional, clean and modern, with great decor! We will return.

Visited this pub with my girlfriend for dinner and could not fault it. The food was delicious, with great portions and value for money. The pub itself is beautiful and has been really nicely renovated. The staff were lovely and even though we visited towards the end of the evening, we didn’t feel rushed and nothing was too much bother - we’ll definitely be back!

I was meeting my friends who live nearby. I had heard about the pub from Danny and mentioned next time we visit our friends we would call in for Sunday lunch. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and welcoming and the beer was excellent and well priced. The Guinness was spot on. We had the beef and Yorkshire pudding followed my the bread and butter pudding and the wives had the ice cream sundaes. I can honestly say I really enjoyed the pub and meal and would definitely go back soon. Matt

The best starters we've has in a long while, absolutely amazing especially the garlic mushrooms and halloumi fries (which were huge). Mains were slightly overcooked for our liking but still fantastic. Service was spectacular, nothing was too much trouble. 100% recommend, we will be returning.

Nice real beer and food. Cosy and friendly. Not quite as good under Buxton Brewery cut good to see it re-open. 04-07-24 Sadly closed again with stripped out fittings and furniture with a sad now on the window from Buxton Brewery saying we tried 😥

Lovely old pub, Robinson Brewery really have invested well in their estate and the Swan Inn is no exception, absolutely chock full of character. Well worth checking out if you’re passing. We chose from the light bite menu which was terrific value for money, great portions and good quality. Very friendly, attentive staff waiting on. The cherry on the cake? Possibly the best pint of Unicorn Bitter I’ve had in a long while.

A group of 23 of us booked for the Christmas 3 course meal. The booking was for 7pm and it took the staff until after 8 pm to start bringing the Starters to us in dribs and Drabs. We were advised the Vegetable soup was not available and we're offered 3 alternatives. One of which turned out to be not available. 1 person did not like the alternatives to the soup but was not offered anything else or her money back for this. The main courses arrived again after the staff not clearing the tables and again in dribs and drabs. The cranberry sauce arrived after most people had finished there meals. The Turkey was beautifully cooked but the Salmon was overcooked, Some of the vegetables were more than slightly Al dente and some cold. Again the tables were not cleared properly and the sweets arrived again in dribs and drabs. We were not offered the option of brandy sauce for the Christmas puddings and the pitiful amount of Custard that was to shared between everyone was very disappointing. The overall experience ended around 10.30 meaning it had taken 3 and a half hours to serve 3 courses if food. There were only 3 staff we could see in the premises and they seemed to be trying to cook and serve at the same time. They appear to be prioritising walk in customers and blamed this partially on the poor service and lack of staff allowed to work by the management. Finally the Cheese and biscuits ordered specially for two people and confirmed the day before were not brought out and we were told that was only available on Christmas day. We shall not be booking this again! Please think carefully before booking a large party for a meal.
