If you're looking for a dining experience that embodies the warmth of traditional British cuisine, The Auctioneer in Carlisle is a must-visit. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by a welcoming atmosphere that feels like a home away from home. The food here is nothing short of exceptional, offering generous portions that are as satisfying as they are delicious. One of the highlights has to be their Friday night carvery—an absolute treat for anyone who appreciates perfectly cooked meats and all the trimmings. The quality of the food is consistently outstanding, with every dish prepared to perfection. It's clear that the chefs at The Auctioneer take pride in delivering a true taste of comfort. But don’t just take my word for it—this place is popular for a reason. Booking is highly recommended as they often fill up fast, especially on weekends. And while the mains are spectacular, do yourself a favor and save room for dessert. Their puddings are simply divine, the kind that leaves you thinking about them long after your meal is over. If you can't finish it all, don’t worry—they're more than happy to box it up for you to enjoy later. In short, The Auctioneer is a gem of a restaurant, perfect for a cozy meal with friends or family. The combination of amazing food, friendly service, and great value makes it one of my absolute favorite places to eat in Carlisle. Highly recommended!

This restaurant gets plenty of good reviews so we must have just hit it on a bad night! On the plus side, the place is lovely. A warm cosy atmosphere perfect for a cold autumn evening. And some of the food was excellent, though some wasn't, and some was pretty poor. However what really let the place down was the service. The staff need to realise that customers are there for a nice evening out, and are spending a reasonable sum of money and they don't want to feel that the staff can't wait to get them out. At any establishment like this you would expect to be able to finish the meal off with a coffee, not to be told ( at 9.10pm), that the machine had been switched off, and that it was our fault because when asked "would you like any more drinks?", we had declined! We would have accepted a cup of Nescafe, but that wasn't available either. A few other things, like serving Gin & Lemonade instead of Tonic didn't help. We'll return, as it's a nice place, but the staff need either someone in charge or some more training, because on this occasion they let the restaurant down, unfortunately.

Usually really enjoy our lunches at Great Corby. Waited over an hour - husbands meal arrived first - Luke warm and chips looked greasy and tired. Told Chef never made soufflé b4 and it had failed - raw soufflé arrjved 10 mins later. No bread which I had ordered and salad arrived opposite to what I had ordered. Ended up not paying. Could see waitresses embarrassed and felt sorry for them. Apparently working with agency chefs - have to say pub ruining reputation. Lunch was appalling and won’t be back until staff secured. Hugely disappointing!!

Attended a reunion with friends here, private dining on the terrace, the service was appalling, they had 3 large parties and obviously insufficient staff. The starter arrived some 25 minutes late, tepid soup, not very appetising, then a 55 minute wait for the mains, overcooked beef and lukewarm veg, no gravy, the a wait for sweet, sticky toffee pudding, can't go wrong with that, oh yes they could, pudding had sort of crust on it and was served with a miniscule portion of ice cream. All in all a huge disappointment and not what we expected, they really need to up their game.

We’ve just returned from an incredible evening at the March Bank hotel. I booked a table for a family of five - including 2 fussy teenagers! Every plate went back clean. The service, the food and the whole experience were amazing. Seriously cannot fault it. Located in a beautifully decorated house, with great original art works it was a truly great meal hosted by a lovely family. Can’t wait to come back.

Do not recommend. Me and my partner got a crab and prawn baguette and safe to say it was disgusting. The woman told us it was “fresh crab and fresh prawns” it was not it was seafood sticks blended with prawns. Asked for salad and got a tiny amount. Soft bendy baguette. Asked aswell if it was margarine or actual butter (we’re both chefs we can tell!!) and got told “no it’s butter” but it was, in fact, margarine. We scraped out the entire filling and ate just bread on the way home not even finishing it. £4.00 is ridiculous for a baguette that is just purely vile. Shame it’s been taken over by people who lie and clearly don’t care about their customers or food. Oh and all the staff were stood about on their phones🙄!!
