Attended a reunion with friends here, private dining on the terrace, the service was appalling, they had 3 large parties and obviously insufficient staff. The starter arrived some 25 minutes late, tepid soup, not very appetising, then a 55 minute wait for the mains, overcooked beef and lukewarm veg, no gravy, the a wait for sweet, sticky toffee pudding, can't go wrong with that, oh yes they could, pudding had sort of crust on it and was served with a miniscule portion of ice cream. All in all a huge disappointment and not what we expected, they really need to up their game.

We went at 6pm. It was full and put us under waiting list. We were told to be around ready 8.30pm. we waited at room but no calls from them. We went down to the restaurant and saw there are some tables empty. We asked why not contacted us as there were empty tables available. They told us these tables are under reservation. How could it be. Is already 8.45pm and the restaurant close at 10pm, who wants to come at this time. Simple they have forgotten us. They didn't apologize but argue that these seats are under reservation. Very poor customer service with elegant attitude.

Xmas lunch for 4 persons at 99 pounds each. The quality of the meal was terrible. The turkey was cut in 1/2" thick slabs of extremely dry processed meat. The xmas pudding was bitter and rounded meal off with a mouthful of coffee grounds. The general atmosphere of the restaurant reflected the disappointment felt by many. Chatted with other customers outside who were of the same opinion, one of whom had booked for a party of 9 quoting it as a "1000 pound school dinner"

Quite popular with guests, and the food was of a good standard, some of the staff seemed new and a little lost, due to poor leadership. Breakfast was of a good standard, but quantities dropped on the second one, by the third it was help yourself, but you had to request any eggs. When the eggs arrived, the breakfast was over. The single coffee machine was inadequate for the amount of guests, despite having time slots to stagger arrivals.

Went to a wedding evening in august, I’ve never been to the crown before, well it was certainly an eye opener!! If I didn’t know any different I’d have thought it was 1 star hotel !! I’ve been in better hostels!! I was looking forward to the bbq to my horror the chef was cooking with his torch from his phone for a minute I thought I was at faulty towers . There was no lightning for the poor man to cook properly, therefore the food wasn’t cooked and was inedible and as I have crohn’s disease I wasn’t taking any chances. I went to the toilet they were disgusting, no toilet paper, bins not emptied, bins overflowing. This establishment is not covid safe at all. Do not waste your money going here I will certainly not be returning !! I’ve give this a rating of 1 as there wasn’t an option of minus. This hotel needs to be reported to health and safety and if I was a health inspector I would have closed it down with immediate effect.

I was given a gift of sparkling afternoon tea for two voucher for a big birthday 2 years ago. After 2 cancellations due to covid I eventually got booked in for the 4 June 2021. When we arrived we were taken into the bar and seated at a small table for two. The waiter asked if we would both like a glass of prosecco and also took our tea and coffee order. When he arrived back with our prosecco he informed us that the food would be served in about 20 minutes time as our afternoon tea had been given away to a walk in customer. After a 50 minute wait a waiter and waitress brought the food out to us and couldn't fit it all on the table so my husband asked if we could be moved to a more suitable table. We were moved to a table for four and the food and hot drinks were laid out on the table and they both disappeared. After ten minutes the waiter returned to see how we were enjoying our tea which we hadn't even started because we had no plates or cutlery!!! The bread on the sandwiches was hard as they had obviously been made and sat in the heat whilst the sausage rolls and scotch eggs were cooked (yolks of the scotch eggs were runny). The waiter by this time realised we were really not happy and gave us the voucher back with a 3 month extension on it explaining we should have been in the conservatory with white tables cloths on the tables. He asked if we had a date in mind and we chose 23July 2021 at 3.00 p.m he assured us he would book it in and personally look after us. I phoned The Crown on 6 July to confirm the booking and told it was booked for 1.30 p.m. I asked if I could change it to 3.00 p.m. and the lady confirmed it had been rearranged for 23 July 2021 at 3.00 p.m. When we arrived on the day we were told that we didn't have a booking and as I was clearly not happy she said she would get a manager to speak to us. The waiter that originally served us arrived and took us into a side room to explain that 2 chefs were off with covid and everybody had been phoned and had their bookings cancelled. I said clearly not as I hadn't been informed he offered lots of lame excuses and said all he could do was offer us a glass of prosecco in the garden to which I refused my husband was so disgusted he got up and walked out and left me.

Having heard that the Crown restaurant had just reopened we looked forward to dining there having done so happily on several occasions over the years. What a disappointment this turned out to be. The new menu was not in place but the new bar menu was offered with service from the bar kitchen apparently and not next door to the restaurant. Service was chaotic and appallingly slow ( an hour and a half or more before food arrived) and and when it did arrive some of it was tepid and unattractively presented. By then unsurprisingly we had lost what appetite we had. The atmosphere in the restaurant was one of frantic but well intentioned rushing around with tables uncleared and customers anxious. Unsuitable background music, unpleasant plastic covered chairs, wobbly tables, half lit decorative lighting and constant references to " you guys" did not set the tone for a four star hotel restaurant. Disorganised chaos reigned, though staff were plainly doing their best.

We had a meal here in December and we were disappointed with the food but the staff were amazing, since then we had been told it had a different chief and things were looking up. We thought we would give this venue a second chance, so on valentines night which to us was risky we booked to have a meal, it’s was amazing what a difference the service and presentation was wonderful we could not believe the difference. We do apologise to the two members of staff who served us whom we cannot remember their names were excellent but hopefully they know who they are as on the night we told them personally, and not forgetting the manager whom we met was very reassuring for the hotel’s future.

Extremely disappointing, they have changed the menu drastically. From being a really nice 3-course dining experience, it is now just upmarket pub food. From pan fried sea bass, to battered cod. From balck-pudding bons-bons in a really interesting sauce, to a smoked salmon roulade. Same sort of stuff you can get at many decent pubs, but NOT what you used to get at the Conservatory restaurant. They didn't even offer us a wine-list, which ought to have warned us. We gave up and had the pub food in our room instead.

We had stayed at the Crown previously, that's why we booked this time. Prior to arrival we received several emails from the hotel re dinner booking and get a 25 pd meal, otherwise pay menu price. Prior to ordering our meal, I asked the gent serving "whats included in the 25 pd meal", he said "anything on the menu, if it costs more than 25 pd, you pay the difference". So what is the point of the fuss about a 25 pd pre-committed meal deal!!Upon arriving for our meal, we were asked to take a seat out side the restaurant and were given menus, we sat and read the menu, sat some more and read the menu again, then sat some more and more, this is absurd. Finally we were asked to go to our table. The wait staff seemed to busy and passed by here and passed by there, there were only 3 tables of diners in the restaurant. The wait staff walked by and asked 'is your meal alright', hardly missing a step as they asked, it was like they had a list of things to do and this was one of them. The young staff need some basic training in engaging with the diners. Food, OK, but would not go out of my way to dine there again, there are far better.

I have stayed at the hotel before but have not used the restaurant. Food was great and service was good. Maybe a little pretentious for me, almost trying too hard I know that sounds harsh but I am still saying it was very good. The view from the restaurant is great and portion size was good. Also had breakfast here the following day where again the food was great but a long time between the toast arriving and the breakfast so that the toast was cold. But again the food was very nice. Look over 100,000+ people have read my reviews and find them helpful because l simply state the 'facts'! This establishment is one of the best restaurants l have ever attended! Whilst we had a buffet type dinner the selection of starters, mains and deserts were simply astounding, the KEY being consistency of quality; each and every selection one chose, was prepared, cooked and displayed with extraordinary care, artistically was pleasurable to the eye. I can say l tried each available dish but three and; each was superb! Yes that's a lot of food even with only taking small portion sizes. The beverage range is a little high in price but pleasing in its range and taste. The atmosphere and comfort equally as good. Look, the fact is l cannot fault this restaurant! What an amazing venue which deserves high phrase. Please do yourself a favour and go by yourself, with friends or family but go! We will 100% be going again this year!

We had all but finished? Had to ask for glasses to be removed. Alex needs to up his game. Reasonable price meals not good service. Not great food. Hot. Clean. That's it. I had Christmas dinner here as part of a large group. It was terrible! On arrival there weren't enough chairs for people to sit on in the lounge. You'd think they'd add extra seating knowing that they had a full house that evening, or at least show people directly to their tables. The staff appeared unorganised. Bread rolls were brought to the table with no butter. One waitress hit my mum on the head as she tried to pass behind her chair and didn't apologise. The mozzarella and tomato salad tasted of absolutely nothing. Zero flavour! We did tell the waiter. The turkey was moist but the gravy tasted istant and the roast potatoes were inedible. It seemed like they were cooked a few days ago and reheated. The Brussel sprouts were not cooked and the carrots just boiled. It was only around this time that wine was eventually brought to the table but only because we had to flag someone down to get us drinks. No one actually came to take our drinks order! They took down the incorrect dessert order for a couple of us. I had the chocolate Delice which was a disgusting massive spoonful of chocolate slop which tasted like it had bits of paper inside it. I tried dissecting it to see if they had perhaps left baking or rice paper inside it in error. I couldn't eat it so tried someone's lemon tart which they couldn't eat. It tasted shop bought from iceland or somewhere. Nothing home made. The Christmas crackers on the table were so cheap! I got a tiny plastic frog in mine which you made jump by flicking it with your fingernail. Another person got nothing in theirs! Did we look like 5 year olds?!The hostess came across quite patronising in her tone. Shouting across the tables asking if we wanted more veg like we were kids in a school canteen! Or pensioners in a old age home. They turned the radiators off when they served coffee (before 10pm) which caused a bit of a chill. Then the disco music started and no one could hear each other speak! Conversation died! There was nothing classy or refined about this evening. It felt like a really bad wedding done on the cheap. The only saving grace was the decent company and the guitarist. Hence 2 stars. None of which the restaurant actually earned! I know restaurants tend to provide mass produced food at Christmas and quality suffers somewhat ( although not in decent restaurants), but this was not acceptable when charging £35 per head and drinks costing extra.i also think you an get better Christmas crackers at pound land. I left feeling cheated and blatantly ripped off. There is no excuse to give such sloppy service and food to paying customers. Just because it's Christmas, it's not an excuse to drop standards because you think people will be expecting it at this time of the year. In fact it's the best time to give incredible food and service and to advertise your restaurant as many people who are part of a Christmas party will likely be experiencing your restaurant for the first time.Never again will I attend a christmas party at the Crown. I doubt I'd even attend for dinner at any other time. And I certainly won't be recommending it. I know a few at our table felt the same way.Going out for dinner should be a special treat! Not a regret, and certainly not a waste of money. My advice is to stay home, invite friends round and order pizza! If you're easily pleased and quality of food and service is not high on your list of priorities when dining out and neither is conversation after10pm, by all means book a table for Christmas.Another abysmal dining experience in carlisle. Was hoping Wetheral might offer higher standards. What a disappointment.

It was a gorgeous sunny day and we decided to eat outside in the pub as the restaurant was full with a convention .I ordered our drinks and food from the really lovely older gentleman behind the bar . and went out to enjoy the sun. Our first course of Mezza plate was great with a good variety of feta ,pickled veg and loads of silver anchovies. My friends main course of Seabass was perfectly cooked with nice crispy saute potatoes, I had ordered the Chilli which amazingly was done properly, that is , not minced beef but with pieces of slow cooked beef ,Just like it is done in Mexico and the southern USA . So many congratulations for that. The Chilli was accompanied with home made crispy tortilli crisps, sour cream, and guacamole all extremely good. The service was friendly and efficient and I can absolutely recommend it. Next April we are staying at the Crown for a couple of days (Wedding). We were in the area and decided to call in for lunch. We reviewed the menu outside which on the face of things, seemed a little limited but we were spoiled for choice once we entered the dining area in the bar! In fact - the choice was such, that it made it difficult to choose as the mains and starters all looked great! As it was the second last day of my summer break, I thought I would have a couple of pints. There is a brewery at the other side of the River Eden (further down the hill from the Crown - over the footbridge above the railway lines and then over the huge Viaduct leading to the village of Great Corby) and I have had Corby beers before which go down a real treat (Best pints to-date have been in the Coledale Inn at Braithwaite (18 miles from Penrith just the other side of Keswick on the A66) and of course the pub opposite the brewery in Great Corby (the Queens). My Favourite ale is their "Gold" which wasn't on this day so I had Corby Ale instead. Wasn't quite the same as what I have been used to so I moved onto Cumberland Ale which was nice.I had the Salmon Caesar Salad as a starter and it was FANTASTIC! It was one of those meals you didn't want to end! It would have done as a main (but don't tell the chef!!). I then moved on to the Seafood Pasta in Garlic sauce and Garlic Bread..........what can I say!.......... "to die for"!! the garlic bread had been finished off by hand and the sauce with the pasta was full flavoured and again, ended too soon! I was completely stuffed afterwards so didn't venture into the sweet menu which in itself seemed endless! My wife had the braised beef steak with horseradish infused mash potato which she thoroughly enjoyed. The size of the hotel and the way it is presented may give off the impression that it is going to be very expensive...............We go to Garden centres a lot and for a couple of teas, a soup and a couple of toasted sandwiches it usually comes to £20 or more..........Yesterday in the Crown, we had between us, one fresh Orange and Lemonade, 2 pints of ale, one Salmon Caesar Salad, one Seafood Pasta and one Braised beef steak. Total was £34.60!Afterwards we took a walk into Great Corby and had a pot of tea for two at the Queens Pub and it was £5.20! ...... compared to a lovely café we visited the same day in Penrith where we had a pot of tea for £2.00! .....and it wasn't one of those greasy spoons either!!The staff were excellent at the Crown and attended to our needs efficiently and in a friendly manner - we were very impressed and will be back again very soon!!

We ate here for Sunday lunch the first time we have been although we had heard good reviews, on arrival we were seated and given a menu however it took a while for our drinks order to be taken considering there was a lot of staff just standing around. We ate in the conservatory room which was nicely decorated. I had the starter of game terrine which was dry however this could be what this type of terrine should be like. The main of chicken and dessert of cheesecake was ok nothing special. Overall the meal was ok for the price paid, however the service was lacking for example we ask for some additional bread which didn’t appear so had to ask another again so won’t be in a rush to go back.

After a lovely Christmas Day lunch here last year we booked again for this year for 6 people.Once again we were not disappointed, on arrival we had champagne and shown to a seat in the lounge and then seated in the conservatory for lunch which was beautiful and couldn't be faulted at all. The staff were superb each course was brought to the table with no waiting at all even though the hotel was fully booked. It was such a relaxed happy atmosphere which made it even more enjoyable and before we left we booked again for next year, I would highly recommend it not only at Christmas but at any time of the year food and service is always 10 out of 10!

Visited here for dinner on Sunday 28th and it is a very good hotel in a good location. I was very pleased by the service and my meal was very commendable (at £28 for 3 courses). For meat eaters there was a good choice of what to have. I ended up choosing the prawn and crayfish salad as a starter followed by the roast topside of beef (which came with roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding and a separate dish of vegetables). It was a really good meal and each dish was so tasty. For desserts the cheese board of Thornby cheeses was a good choice. This is the reason why I provided a '4' rating to this restaurant. However, my partner did not fare that well due to being a vegetarian. It would have been good if more options were provided to vegetarians, as there was only one choice of starter and main course. Her tomato and red lentil soup was only passable and she then asked if there were any other choices that could be made as a main. They did offer to make her a creamy mushroom pasta dish, but this proved to be quite unpalatable due to overcooking the pasta and mushrooms. For a venue that has one AA rosette, they struggled to cook something very basic. Feedback was provided at the end of this course and the service provided by the head waitress was to be noted. She apologised, provided feedback to the chefs and then removed her main course from the bill (offering us both a complimentary glass of wine each). This would not have been necessary if a greater choice of vegetarian dishes was on offer, which was the root cause. If my partner was reviewing then it may have resulted in a '2' rating. In summary - meat eaters '4' and vegetarians '2'. I would go back, but please do more for vegetarians (as one option is not enough)

Our friend booked because he was working close buy. I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurant lay out (light and open) and the service was excellent. We all ate from the set menu but the choice was good. The lamb and the chicken were delicious. As were the puddings. It was quite expensive once wine was added but I enjoyed the meal and I think it is somewhere that we will eat again.

We had a 3 course meal at the Crown in June and it was delicious, each course was beautifully presented and extremely tasty. The menu is varied with something to suit everyone however the chef was also kind enough to tweak one of the dishes to suit one of the members of our party and came to check that everything was ok for us. Fantastic food, helpful staff and a beautiful setting. Would definately return!

Had a very pleasant lunch consisting of duck pate followed by a beef stew in Walton's bar. They have a large TV in the corner usually with a Sky Sports channel showing, with the sound turned down. Considering they were fairly busy, the meals arrived in a timely manner. The staff were friendly and efficient. The car parking area is not large, and often fairly full with hotel gym members visiting the club.Slightly pricey but will visit again

had a couple of hours to waste in wetheral until the train, we were hungry too. so popped into the crown hotel for some lunch. i think we were in the waltons bar? not really sure, we were hungry! the place was full! luckily there was some tables at the back or else we wouldnt of eaten that lunchtime as fantails was closed too! the place looks like an old pub but honestly it didnt smell like that, which is a first for me! me and the partner ordered the fish and chips and the cajun chicken burger. it came rapid! i was so happy :D the size of this fish was amazing. it was bloody huge! my cajun chicken burger came in some sort of scone? it just made it taste even more delicious! home made chips, home made sauce. we also got some onion rings. the size of them was bigger than your own head! they were huge! and they were home made too. smelling good and looking good we scranned the lot! it was such a good meal. the staff were nice and friendly. there was more than enough table space for everyone and the regulars were just darlings! shall definately be returning here again! oow! also, the free wifi helped considering both our phones signals died, otherwise we would have really been stuck!

We chose to have lunch here on route from a holiday in Scotland, our favourite lunch time stop being closed on that day. We wanted somewhere convenient to the M6 at Carlisle and the Tripadvisor reviews were encouraging. However, we were disappointed. The only lunch available was that served in Walton's Bar. The bar is dark and scruffy, and in need of refurbishment, not a comfortable place to eat in. The tables are small and closely packed. The Walton's Bar menu was not inspring, consisting mainly of burgers and grills and chips. We asked if any other other menu was available and were informed that the Conservatory menu could be served in the bar. This consisted on a set lunch of two or three courses and on the face of it appeared to be good value for money, however that day's menu was not as interesting as the sample menu on their website. The food when served could only be described as adequate. My portion of greens was minuscule. The wine list was agan adequate, but not exciting. The wine was reasonably priced. The service was OK. The park car is rather small for the size of the hotel, and at busy times finding a space could be difficult.Generally the whole experience was disappointing and I can find nothing about our experience to recommend it. I shall not be returning to this restaurant.

Four of us had Christmas lunch here and what superb value, including a welcome drink and 4 courses.- u8nbeatable in the Carlisle area.Very friendly effusive welcome, only let down by the rushed finale - when the staff seemed to be on a mission to abandon the premises by 2.30pm sharpish - arriving like a plague of locusts to clear cutlery etc at the end of our meal and our not being offered a 2nd cup of coffee in the lounge , as earlier guests were on our arrival in the room - as it appeared the waitress had gone home. This is no reflection on the staff however, as we presume they were only paid up to 2.30pm by the management, but this does create a rather unsettling atmosphere after such a superb lunch. Had it not been for that we would all have awarded 5 stars!

We were staying at the nearby wonderful Kings Nook Hall and had a meal here. The food was ok except that many of the meals included 'handcut chips'. We enjoyed a wonderful starter and main course at the conservatory restaurant, plus excellent wine. However, when it came to dessert, one of us chose the "Assiette", which, with a supplement of £4, was very disappointing, Had there been no supplement, we would have had no complaints, but an inch square of sticky toffee and the same of chocolate brownie, did not, we felt, warrant an extra £4. Staff were very attentive, and pleasant, and we will definately be back.

Been twice to the crown, one as a treat for valentines day where the food was to die for, best steak I've ever had no fat what so ever, great romantic atmosphere, there was a harpist playing for everyone. Both had great menus and I couldn't fault the service, the staff couldn't do enough to help. Would recommend ... A very happy customer x

On arrival in the restaurant area we were greeted by a pleasant young lady who confirmed our booking and took our drinks order. We were seated in a lovely spot overlooking the immaculate gardens. Starters were quick to arrive and my wife had what she described as the best ever smoked haddock risotto she had ever tasted.Main courses were not a dissapointment either with beutifully presented dishes of rump steak with cottage pie and the nicest trout dish.My wife literally didn't have room for desert and I chose a nice selection of local cheeses. If anyone has reservations about hotel restaurants being too formal - forget them !Throughout the meal the service was efficient, friendly and very relaxed. Overall I would rate the whole experience 10 out of 10.

The best coffee in Brampton! We love coming here for coffee and breakfast. Very friendly owner, Emma and her lovely baristas work hard to get your order just right. There are a great range of coffee, tea and home made cakes as well as savoury hot food. The place is often bustling with cosy chat, interesting art work on the walls (Emma has artist’s displays each month) and it’s also dog friendly too. Just a great place.
