The Coach And Horses in Carlisle

I was staying in the Premier inn Carlisle. I was going to eat there but decided to come to the Coach & Horses instead. I'm very pleased I did! Friendly and helpful staff and the food was excellent!

Been twice in a week. Chicken burgers and beef burgers very good as was the Lasagne. The vegetarian curry was rather too spicy for the person that asked for it but if that's what you like fine. Would not stop us going again.

Went on the off chance....so pleased we did. Friendly staff & food was lovely. Went just after lunchtime so it was quiet. Nice place.

Best roast I have had in a very long time!

Amazing food, friendly staff and the atmosphere is nice. Recently opened and it’s lovely inside and well managed. Would definitely recommended.

Popped in here for a bite to eat, the food was great and large portions too. However the star of this place is the barman/ server Cameron Cam for short who is one of the best I’ve ever seen. He’s got charm and chat is efficient and effective and while listening to him he was upselling too. A very impressive member of staff. Well done Cam. P.s. we are in the hotel industry and he was great.

We walked down from the premier inn 13 minutes walk. Well worth the walk the food is fantastic. I had sausage and mash I wife had vegetarian chill great to see this pub. Open again.

We have called in here a few times over the years when using it as an overnighter staying both of the local premier inns. The new owners have done a wonderful job reopening and doing the pub up, our food was wonderful Cumberland sausage and veg chilli, great job will be back again next time. Thank you

Fantastic food and lovely staff. The ingredients were fresh and cooked to perfection. Good menu variety too. Think this will become a radiant regularly spot for us.

Dog friendly! Excellent service very welcoming. Great food but large portions. Very clean and smart with a good atmosphere. Outside seating front and back of pub.

Very disappointed, Some backstory last time i was there having a hoot ordering drinks, at one time i paid with a 20 and they didn't have enough float so being ok with it and trying to help i said that's ok, just leave me one in the wood, we agreed and it's no big deal one pint right. Fast forward to today i go in, probably gonna have a few drinks as i would i cash in my one pint in the wood and I I'm awkwardly rejected! I was embarrassed and did not want to make a fuss at the time but i thought about it, i paid for that. Anyway very sad the trust is gone sorry

Great for a quick pint after work

Had a lovely meal, just phoned on the off chance they were serving meals, and so thankful we did. Very warm welcome and my salmon was beautiful and my husband enjoyed his burger and rice pudding. Will definitely be back soon.

Recently re-opened under new management, food is good and well priced. Lacking in the beer department though which is a shame.

It was amazing the food was excellent. I had a braised pork which was tender and melt in your mouth. My son had sausages and mash which were juicy and smooth. definitely recommend

We popped in for a late lunch. We both had the delicious steak pie and chips. The onion rings are something quite special. Everything was home cooked, superb. Great, friendly service and a lovely place to spend some time.

Lovely pub been done up recently. Stopped on our way up to Scotland was very friendly pub and they were welcoming to our dog.

Visited as a table of 4 and not one of us had anything bad to say. The whole place was spotless, lovely decor, friendly staff and absolutely beautiful food. Salmon, curry and lasagna all hit the spot and left 4 clear plates.

Arrived Weds evening for a meal, our group consisted of 3 adults and 2 dogs. Greeted warmly by staff, good atmosphere in the pub. Food was great with waiting staff attentive & friendly. If passing by again we will return.

Sorry but we ordered as a group asked if we could all be deserved together. But 3 of us ate there meals for the rest arrived, cool plates so couldn't wait for the rest of meal, ask for not carrots arrived with carrot mash. Only ate 1/7th.of meal. Not sure if understaffed or chef over stretched. But arrived its it, order of instead of desert, NO coffee, table was squeezed in ever thought we booked when 1st opened. Sorry will not return

Had a very good meal and the service was excellent. Will be arranging our Company Xmas meal for next week.

I was the only one in the bar and I asked for a pint of Guinness and was charged £5.50 far too much

Absolutely shocking, the pub has undergone a £300k refit and opened two weeks ago, the two back doors are awash with dried leaves and one door is the designated smoking area!!! Fire hazard or what. It’s been like that since the placed reopened obviously the pubs management have no conception of customer appreciation. Small dogs are apparently most acceptable on the bar top - how hygienic is that.

I called here after a long driving day and had a wholesome plate of pub food which hit the spot. A very handy place just off M6 junction 44, there's not much else around the very top end of Carlisle. Check with them before you land as they don't cook every day.

The state of the high chair we had to put our daughter in was DISGUSTING! Hadn’t even been given a cursory wipe. Dried sauce all over the tray, the seat and straps were absolutely filthy and, worst of all, the sides were filled with mouldy old food. Absolutely no excuse as the place was dead. We had to clean it ourselves as best we could. Ordinarily, we would have left but the food had already been brought out and our daughter was hungry. Food was poor too. The cheese slice on my husband’s burger had gone hard, it was so old. He went to get some ketchup but, when he opened it, there was white furry mould growing inside the lid! It’s a shame because the food here used to be lovely!

Food was disgusting.. frozen vegetables, ready mash and chip pan roast potatoes and parsnips.. no apple sauce for the roast pork either.. The building needs a total refurbishment as its filthy.. staff were very hospitable though, the only good part of our visit

Good food and plenty of it, at a good price. Staff were very friendly and helpful, well worth stopping-off if you need something to eat and / or drink.

Wow, just wow!!! The owner Graeme is a legend so he is and what a brilliant, nice, friendly pub it is!! We were just visiting for the day from Glasgow and he went out of his way to drive us back to the city center........WHAT A LEGEND!!!

Lovely, dog friendly pub, excellent service. The only thing to let it down was the food 😔 all home cooked but was very well done, might have been better earlier in the day though.

Had the 3 course Christmas Dinner was beautiful there was 10 of us and all food came out hot and was massive portions not one of us had any complaints 5 stars. Staff were very friendly

We (5) arranged to spend the evening having a few drinks, mine host cleared a table for us in the front room and we had a very pleasant time together.

Booked here a couple of times at the last minute as it was close to a Very Well Known Hotel Brand. (10 minutes walk). Very friendly and accommodating staff, good service and very good, reasonably priced food.

My wife and I stopped in for a meal there on the 5th of November and we were surprised with hospitality and the quality of the food, really lovely meal and a nice pint of beer !...we will certainly call there again on our way through ..

Rang up to ask if we could stay in the car park after a meal and a few drinks with our campers. The staff , food and cosy atmosphere was fantastic, nice place

Just had a sunday dinner from here and was disappointed with the portion of the meal , the beef was ripped into little pieces to try and make it look like more but it didn't even make up to one slice , when i questioned a member of staff about it they couldnt tell me if that was the correct portion although they did apologise, i still had to pay the full price for the meals.

Food was good with friendly staff

After calling around a few places on a Saturday evening at late notice, this pub graciously made room for the four of us.The food is great value and delicious (especially the desserts!), and everyone was very friendly - including the other patrons :)The owner, I think, also came around to check on everyone. Just a really great atmosphere that really made our evening.

Lovely decorated dining area, we arrived on the change of the new menu which did have some simple food but a fair bit of spice on others. Having spoken to the manager/ owner we were able to adapt to our requirements. Absolutely fabulous food and atmosphere. Will definitely go again. Made to feel very welcome. THANKYOU

Visited the Coach and Horses for the first time and had a brilliant evening. Food was grand, brilliant atmosphere and very reasonably priced. Both young woman and man behind the bar were very attentive helpful and polite whilst both being visibly extremely busy. Deserves nothing less than 5 stars. If we were closer to Carlisle we would certainly be regular customers.

Really disappointing , I had heard good things about there previously, my beef burger was raw on the inside , and my daughters steak pie was warmed in a microwave with a skin on top of the gravy, limited drinks as no soda on tap and no soft drinks, after the 1st round there was no Pepsi left, we had meet friends for a special catch up so had hoped for a nice meal

Had a fabulous meal at the Coach and Horses pub this evening. Booked ahead whilst using the localPremier inn on way to Scotland for a holiday. Glad we did as the food was excellent and the staff were very warm and welcoming. Looks a little tired from the road but don’t let that fool you. Thanks again for a great evening.

We are from the South East of England and on a holiday in Scotland. We drove back across the border for a day trip out and found ourselves in Carlisle, and I'm glad we did. We found the Coach and Horses on Google maps and came here as it was close by. From the moment we walked in the door the man dealing with us was incredibly polite and helpful, even though he was rather busy. I had the creamy mushroom starter which was very very good, and my wife had the chicken noodle soup which she really liked (just slightly spicy for her). My main was the homemade pie, if you like pie you must have this. It was delicious and absolutely packed with chunky meat! Really really good, I had this was the mash which had a lot of taste, and peas. My wife had the macaroni cheese which she says was very nice. Another man had taken our plates who we chatted to briefly and he was also really nice. If we were locals we would certainly eat here often. I haven't written a review before I don't think, but I had to for this. Thank you Coach and Horses for our great experience.

Visited this little gem of a pub. What a welcome we received on entry, we were a group of 4 and not one of us could complain about the hospitality we were shown. Staff so friendly and attentive. Food was out of this world... ( and we have visited so many " local" pubs. )Portion sizes and presentation are exactly what you want. Great food, great service, extremely welcoming. Definitely worth a visit if you live in the area and if you're coming off junction 44 into Carlisle, first left after the lights coming off the motorway... give it a visit. You won't be disappointed.

Very poor service ,one hour wait for food . Food ordered , local Haddock , Steak slice ,Cumberland sausage, Vegetarian pizza, Beef burger .Steak slice was dried out and black on the outside edges and rock hard at one end ,almost inedible and visibly died out ,should never have left the kitchen . Haddock tasteless ,frozen chips and frozen peas , Cumberland sausage ok but mash like a tasteless pulp , pizza and burger were ok . In all a very bad and uncaring experience ,avoid at all costs .

Stopped in here on way home to Glasgow from a weekend in Blackpool. Staff were very friendly and polite. Very good with the kids and the landlord couldn't have been any more welcoming. Sunday roast was the best I've ever tasted! We have definitely found our new half way pit stop!

Stopped here for couple drinks over 2 days, very good service, polite staff, drinks very reasonable price wise, 2 minute walk from premier inn, Didn't try food but it looked great.

Went in pub on Friday night for a couple of drinks with friends, didn’t have time for anything to eat before going to pub. The landlord very kindly offered to make some chips even though the kitchen had already closed for the evening the chips came with an brilliant pizza hot & spicy (not to hot but very tasty), the base was thin!!

We had broken down at Carlisle whilst awaiting on a hire car. Greame and all the friendly staff looked after us and our dog. Great pub,most friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Would defo recommend 👌 Gareth,Rachel and Luna x

Visited here with my husband, I read lots of comments on here about sectarian abuse. My husband is a Celtic supporter, from Scotland. He walked in to the pub with a Celtic top on. We were made very welcome, there was banter but that's all it was, light hearted banter and certainly not racism. We had a great chat with Graham the owner, really interesting guy. The pub is lovely, as was the food. The cheesecake was probably the best I have ever had. Honestly, this place is well worth a visit, where everyone will receive a very warm welcome. Very Covid safe. Highly recommend.

We were staying at the nearby Premier Inn and were very disappointed with the service so we called the Coach and Horses and received a very friendly welcome invitation to dine.The service and food was excellent and we had a very enjoyable evening.If you’re staying at the Premier Inn I strongly advise against dining there and giving this great pub a chance instead!

We visited this pub after it reopened for food and drinks. New menu, new chef. We both ordered fillet steak, very well priced at £19.00, and not something that was on menu before. We were both very impressed, steak was cooked perfectly and very tender. Everyone else who had food said there’s was very good.Would definitely recommend giving it a try but take note that kitchen closes at 8pm

Called in today for a family lunch , top quality pub food with a friendly service , everyone throughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend the steak pie and chips - 5 stars all round 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽

Ideal place for a meal if staying in the nearby Premier Inn. Haddock was large and tasty, and Cumberland sausage and mash great. Staff efficient and friendly, Covid rules followed to the letter. Drinks reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

We just arrived in Carlisle after a long drive, phoned the Pub to ask if they had any tables to eat , it was no problem for them to accommodate us.Food was fantastic, reasonable prices, friendly staff.Great place and not far of the Motorway at Junction 44

Two menus, one featuring pub favourites with chips and the specials much more exotic- think it was South American. I had an excellent fish and chips with homemade tartare and mushy peas. My friends enjoyed their spicy chicken.Sadly there was a really noisy table beside us or we would have stayed for the lovely looking pineapple desert.Good value as well.

We were staying at the Premier Inn, less than 10 minutes away, and called in for a quick drink. We were so impressed with the welcome and the ambience that we dropped off the car and went back for a meal. The food and service were excellent. We were very impressed with the staff who were friendly and professional. It was well worth the walk.

Great pub food, reasonable prices and well good portions, even did a sausage for our dog Doris. Owners and family really nice. Would come often if we lived local.One of the locals even moved tables so we could be seated. That deserved a pint for him thank you.

We had a lovely Sunday roast and burger for our meals. The staff was brilliant and so helpful. We wish them the best and will definitely stop in, when next in the area.
