Must admit the visit didn’t start well. The car park is scruffy with bins, rubbish and sundry old equipment piled up and it doesn’t create a good first impression. Inside the welcome was warm and friendly but the chairs at the table we were shown to were scruffy and very stained. My first beer (London Pride) was sour, probably the end of the barrel, but was changed when I pointed it out and The Scarecrow much better. Not good so far. However, the staff were great and the food very good. Fish and chips was plentiful and beautifully cooked. The Hoisin Belly Pork something different and really tasty. Overall we all enjoyed our visit and would go again.

I had booked lunch in the Lounges for my partners birthday. The booking was made 7 days in advance and confirmed by email. The Grove called to confirm the booking the day before, and confirmed we wanted Sushi, not Afternoon Tea. They also sent an email to confirm again the morning of the booking. They mentioned nothing of not being able to sit in the Lounges on any of the confirmations. On arrival we were told they had overbooked, and The Lounges were now only for Afternoon Tea and we could go to the bar if we wanted. The Bar had business people on laptops and children running round, not the setting you want for a birthday lunch. Its disappointing that they overbook, but also that they didn't mention this when they confirmed the booking so we could change our plans. Clearly money over service and we won't be returning.

Not one of our party of 34 adults and children could fault the Sunday Lunch service, food and experience. We understandably pre-ordered our food but the impeccable organisation of the staff (particularly Jonathan) in bringing our lunches to the table to the right people, adding dessert orders and enabling each group to settle up without fuss or confusion was superb. As for the children, we only saw them fleetingly while they ate. The rest of the time they were playing football using the two small goals, climbing, swinging and sliding away. The venue is perfect for large groups with an outside bar making ordering drinks efficient. Another nod to Jonathan, his level of attentiveness was spot-on and The Boot is very lucky to have a host as helpful and friendly as this guy. Thank you.

Was somewhat apprehensive about booking The Stables based on the recent reviews. Our experience was positive. We met friends and entered the beautiful restaurant with lovely fresh flowers. It has a lovely, relaxed vibe. We’d a young, but very attentive server and she provided excellent service throughout, even though the restaurant was fully booked and as time went on became very busy. Lots of friends and families meeting up and enjoying the beautiful setting of The Grove. We started with a selection of starters to graze on including the sour dough bread (beautiful), mushroom pate and the Isle of Wight Heritage tomato salad (so good, we ordered a second one). Then we had a child’s meal of the chicken goujons, several portions of the classic fish and chips, and the reminder of us had the lamb cutlets. All were excellent. My only criticism would be that the lamb didn’t come with anything so although you’d one side included you really needed both some veg and some carbs, but were forced to choose. For puddings, we’d a section including a stunning lemon tart. In all, a lovely get together of family and friends. And it was a glorious place to spend a couple of hours on a sunny Saturday. It ain’t cheap, but then you’re in a five star hotel. Happy to recommend and we’d certainly revisit if in the area.
