Was somewhat apprehensive about booking The Stables based on the recent reviews. Our experience was positive. We met friends and entered the beautiful restaurant with lovely fresh flowers. It has a lovely, relaxed vibe. We’d a young, but very attentive server and she provided excellent service throughout, even though the restaurant was fully booked and as time went on became very busy. Lots of friends and families meeting up and enjoying the beautiful setting of The Grove. We started with a selection of starters to graze on including the sour dough bread (beautiful), mushroom pate and the Isle of Wight Heritage tomato salad (so good, we ordered a second one). Then we had a child’s meal of the chicken goujons, several portions of the classic fish and chips, and the reminder of us had the lamb cutlets. All were excellent. My only criticism would be that the lamb didn’t come with anything so although you’d one side included you really needed both some veg and some carbs, but were forced to choose. For puddings, we’d a section including a stunning lemon tart. In all, a lovely get together of family and friends. And it was a glorious place to spend a couple of hours on a sunny Saturday. It ain’t cheap, but then you’re in a five star hotel. Happy to recommend and we’d certainly revisit if in the area.

Dreadful experience. Loud surroundings, lukewarm food. Staff very surly and uncaring. Food underwhelming. Gnocchi in particular was cold and flavourless. Hugely overpriced for what was on offer. £6.50 for a bottle of sparkling water? Had to ask three times for tap water and sides that were ordered with mains. Will never go back. Awful.

None of my pics do this food justice!!!! It was so delicious and nice and HOT (because no one likes cold food!) The atmosphere was so beautiful, calm was missing some cool jazz music but it’s that kinda vibe. Beautiful decorated and such a nice place for a quality dinners with good friends. The staff are ALL lovely! Extra shout out to Charlie for making my mums birthday dinner so special for the two of us! Didn’t meet anyone at the bar, but those cocktails were FANTASTIC! the best part of the night (for my Mum). It was difficult to find on WAZE, just use Google Maps as the postcode sent me 8mins down the road. BUT, it was 100% worth the extra drive.

Wow. Had steak and chips last night. No sauce, no nothing. And the steak tasted absolutely spot on. Medium cooked. Best one i have had so far, and I am 52, so it's going to take some beating. Yes, i would have said it cost a lot, but no. Was well worth it

Disappointing Experience at The Stables Restaurant - A Missed Opportunity for Hospitality As long-time guests of The Grove Hotel, we were eagerly anticipating a pleasant evening at The Stables restaurant, hoping to enjoy a meal on their charming outdoor terrace. Unfortunately, our experience was far from the level of hospitality we expected. Upon arrival, we were surprised to find the terrace nearly empty, with only one table occupied among the 18 available. We politely requested a table for two, explaining that we only needed about an hour to enjoy a quick meal. To our dismay, the receptionist informed us that all tables were booked and declined our request in a manner that felt dismissive and lacking in empathy. We left the terrace, disappointed but hoping that perhaps the tables would indeed fill up as the evening progressed. However, an hour later, only six tables were occupied, leaving the terrace largely empty and making the earlier refusal to seat us feel unnecessary and, frankly, frustrating. As guests of The Grove Hotel for the past week, we have enjoyed many of its amenities and experiences, but this interaction left a sour note. We understand that reservations are important, but a bit of flexibility and kindness could have gone a long way. Hospitality is not just about the food served, but also about making guests feel welcome and valued. Unfortunately, The Stables fell short in this regard. We hope that future guests have a better experience, but for us, this incident was a disappointing end to our stay. We sincerely hope that the management will take this feedback to heart and work on enhancing the guest experience with a focus on courtesy and accommodation

As a regular diner at The Stables restaurant, I must express major disappointment with the service and meal this lunchtime. Fish and Chips is not a complicated meal. Overcooking the batter and then sending it out is a big "no no" for any kitchen! At £24 a meal, we would expect better standards. Now the service - ridiculous! Non-existent. Plates slammed, zero attempt at conversation, simply rude. Yes, we asked to remove the "service charge" as there was NO SERVICE! The attitude and response at this stage was simply awful. Having dined clients at this venue for well over a decade, I will ensure my business £ are spent somewhere else where it is actually appreciated.

Very attentive service throughout. In terms of food, the ham hock and poached egg starter was delicious. The burger was ok, I expected better. The crispy bacon was overcooked so had a lasting burnt taste in my mouth. The beef is cooked one way with no option to have it cooked medium. I would have preferred the beef to be cooked to preference.

We are regular clients at the Grove and particular the Stables Bar. On now 3 separate occasions, we have left disappointed and made to feel embarrassed. The level of service in this Bar Area is not of a 5* Luxury Hotel. When requesting items for Children we were told numerous times that the Chef will not allow this! This requests were not out of the ordinary. We have been left surprised by the lack of personal service and attention to details. When we confronted the manager, we were made to feel to bad for even approaching him and he fob us off and told us it was our problem - we were left speechless!

We sat outside in the Bar area, a function had been on and all the delegates then came out in to the seating area. They took over the entire bar and stood all around our table. It was not a relaxing meal, as they dominated the area. We ordered our food and it came. So disappointing me and my husband had fish n chips and we had 8 chips each and the batter was more than the fish inside. My son had steak and we had to ask 3 times for a steak knife. Food was so bad and the atmosphere was loud and they dominated the are. Staff should have made them stand in an area, so other guests could eat.

We were staying at The Grove for SPA. One of the evenings we went into The Stables Bar. We were shown to a table and just left. We had to ask for a menu and any service we needed whilst having our dinner and later the desert menu. The lighting was so bad we could hardy see the menu. The burger and the Steak Ciabatta was so dry, we could have had a better dinner at our local pub.

Avoid, if you enjoy your food and appreciate fresh ingredients then this place has to be side lined. £22 for a frozen cod portion that was tiny and rock hard. Honestly I have better fish and chips from my local pub. It’s soo disappointing and actually disgusting how they can even suggest they are a five star restaurant serving up food you would see at a local chain such as beef ea***. Please don’t expect anything from this restaurant, total rubbish.

Gosh, terrible roast. We had chicken and lamb and these were some of the worst cuts of meat I’ve had in a roast before. So wobbly and tasted old. The trimmings were nice so I just ate those although very dense potatoes with no crunch. Atmosphere feels like a kids club or a canteen and needs a decor refurb to bring it into this decade.

Return visit to The Stables, this time eating alfresco in an idyllic setting on a beautiful sunny day. It felt like a mini holiday and a treat. All the food was good apart from the ribeye steak which was more gristle than marble, Service was ok but overstretched eg had to chase the desert menu as was originally presented the mains menu and also had to seek out the bill. We enjoyed our afternoon but there is room for improvement,

Had lunch at the stables today Nice setting Very noisy / lively - not really a problem for us, the ignorant person who's mobile kept ringing nearly got it stuck where the sun dont shine however Project X bloody mary was decent Starters (Goats Cheese and Heirloom salad and the scallops and pork belly) were good Mains a bit of a let down - I should have gone for the plaice but had the "special" soft shell crab burger - too greasy for me. Emma's Chicken Schnizel burger was a bit cremated... Emma's dessert (fresh strawberries) was very nice Meal fell away towards end of service - we were last sitting and staff just seemed to switch off somewhat. Took ages to get desserts and I had a sauce pot, dropped from the table being cleared behind us, spray up my back and over my head - not ideal :/ Would happily go again, but will try the Plaice or a steak I think

This was not our first visit to the stables but will definitely be the last. The food at the stables is very good and much improved on historic visits. However the service, considering the reputation of the Grove hotel was very poor and in some cases non existent. In summary on service - I had to go and find the wine list as it was not offered, despite asking for it on two occasions. White wine was served warm - was then chilled but not served to us and left at the other end of the restaurant. Whilst still deliberating our red wine choice starters were served and our main courses were fired by the kitchen - I had to go the counter and ask for the mains to be stopped. Wine was hardly poured for us - I told the Maitre’d that we would do it ourselves as glasses were constantly empty and he thanked me doing this !! At the end of the meal we went to sit outside - drinks were finished but not one member of staff approached us to see if we wanted anything else - they were all preoccupied with a group of golfers. Such a shame that the service is so poor unless you have paid to play golf and cannot recommend based on our experience.

Firstly we are regular customers as we live locally and visit often and normally enjoy the experience. Today however was our first visit since the refurbishment has been completed and first impressions on walking in was pleasing to the eye it has been extended and it's much lighter inside. We found a table on arrival outside - the weather for a change was quite pleasant. A member of staff got us "one" menu... bit of a joke to be honest! We went inside and got another one, and this is where we should have left in all honesty. We waited an absolute age to get acknowledged let alone get someone to take our drinks order, once our order was was placed including food we waited and waited...... so much so we had to get the attention of a member of staff and asked them where our drinks order was we had after all walked 3 miles to get there! Drinks arrived and cutlery also arrived.....the fabric napkins were still damp no idea what is going on here. Food arrived one of the dishes was fish and chips which we always order the fish was absolutely tiny like half the size that we have had before, the other dish which was corn fed chicken was no better to be honest - but we had request condiments (sauces, vinegar, salt, pepper, etc) ..we had to request extra tomato sauce as we both had chips and one little sauce pot was not going to cover the job! surprise surprise we had to wait ages for that too! One massive regret was that we had ordered a bottle of wine which we chose to take home with us than spend a moment longer here. The service was absolutely APPALLING, food and drinks coming out and staff having no idea which table they were for....we were offered food and drinks on a few occasions.... I used to work in hospitality and yes I know how it all works and I have high expectations especially at such an establishment, there was no check back etc... We spoke to Lewis (I think that was his name) he said he was the manager but to honest after raising our concerns he couldn't get away quick enough and we got the impression that he really didn't care and that we didn't matter :-( It has always been a treat for us to come here we work really hard for our money and unless things improve remarkably it will be a long time before we return if we ever do as this venue is literally on our doorstep. Anyone that knows me will know that I ALWAYS take pictures of my food but on this occasion I did not, it wasn't something I wanted to share with any of my social media accounts.

We’ve been coming here for a few years and always enjoyed it as a slightly pricey treat. This is our first visit since the refurbishment and we’re extremely disappointed. Staff ignored us and I had to get up to ask them if I could order. My wife ordered the fish and chips which is half the size it used to be. I had the corn fed chicken which was mediocre at best. I had to go to the bar to ask for condiments. Staff were running around like headless chickens not knowing which order went where. A total joke. We left taking half a bottle of wine with us because our experience had been so bad. Not going back.

We went to the Stables for breakfast before golf today and all had the bacon baps and my bap was gluten free. I can honestly say they were the worst bacon baps I have ever had - horrible bacon, poorly cooked and a dry gluten free bap. There are so many good quality gluten free products on the market so I cannot understand why a hotel of this calibre cannot purchase better food. So very disappointing and we will not be going back anytime soon.

As you drive down the long, winding road that leads towards The Grove, you may be mistaken for thinking you have taken a wrong turn, as the grounds are huge and the road is long and keeps on going. It is quite breathtaking as you get closer, especially on a bright, sunshiny day, as the main building looks large & stately, surrounded by beautiful green land. The Stables Restaurant looks like an old stables conversion (hence the name). The vivid green of the well-kept surrounding land/ grass, as it's known for its golf course too, was picturesque in the sunshine. As you approach, there is ample parking in their large car parks. There are 3 different restaurants at the Grove, but today I ate in The Stables Restaurant, which is not too formal, quite bright and airy. The menu was one page, which I like, because I feel it keeps the food fresher rather than a huge menu. I went for the special as a starter, which was described as crab Tempura with vegetables, which was served with a little side of noodles and was nice, but you only got one crab claw for your £19. For mains as it was a Sunday, my friend had the roast beef dinner, and I decided to try the chicken and leek pie, pancetta, mash, and a creamy tarragon sauce. We also had sides of mixed vegetables which came with the roast dinner & I ordered a side of broccoli. My pie was small but packed with flavour, and the creamy tarragon sauce worked wonderfully with the mash & and vegetables, and I ate every bit! I also tried the beef, which was perfectly cooked and served with delicious gravy, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding & a side of vegetables. We had one glass of wine each, a Rapura sauvignon blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, which was lovely! The bill came, with service to £60 per head. I really enjoyed all the food, so I would give it a 9/10. The service was good, staff very attentive except at the very start, where only one of us was given a menu, and no one came back with another one. Fortunately, my friend knew what she was having quickly, so she gave me her menu to peruse. Afterwards, we retired to the bar area, which is by The Glasshouse Restaurant (a buffet style restaurant), to have a coffee. Will definitely return again! . . The experience at the Stable had more of a quiet setting, low dim lighting, televisions throughout but not overwhelming. And the food prices aren’t as expensive but the food still tastes great and filling. I ordered the chicken schnitzel burger, which comes with fries and I would order it again. My wife ordered the Stables beef burger which came with real thick cut bacon. She eat it all. I ate the bacon lol. We normally never finish our meal, so that said a lot about us. Thank you 🙏🏾

We had a very nice lunch here but the prices take some justification. Enjoyed the hand dived scallops and belly of pork though and service was good

It was good but I wouldn't say it's AMAZING. I wouldn't go out my way to go again. There's plenty of better places at better prices.

Mother’s Day breakfast was disappointing on all fronts. A long standing booking for a special occasion - the menu was limited, no pastries available and just eggs in the usual ways. The restaurant was understaffed, we were left waiting for 40 minutes before we asked to order and tables around us were left uncleared. My husband stood 3 times to close the doors as we were seated in a cold draft. The food was poor, undercooked eggs, unripened fruit and one meagre slice of sourdough with cold poached eggs on top. We left cold, hungry and £80 lighter from a 5 star hotel? Money would have been better spent at a local cafe.

Atmosphere relaxed, service polite. Food tasted good, but not outstanding compared to other similar priced restaurants. £7 for ONE SMALL scoop of ice cream - not even a squirt of sauce or sprinkles - Really! It doesn’t take much effort or imagination. We didn’t like...

I have never a bad experience at the Grove. The service is exemplary and the general atmosphere fabulous. Whether you are going for a meal or just popping in for a drink. Food is really good quality. Drinks are pricey but what you expect from a 5 star hotel. My favourite place and I feel lucky it's on my doorstep!

I have been to the stables restaurant and the bar a couple of times in the last few months. The food in the restaurant is wonderful, kind of a Gastro pub experience… Maybe slightly better. The bar has a great atmosphere to it too; with a wide selection of drinks on offer. Personally, I think that the service could be slightly more attentive. When we went for dinner at the stables restaurant we ordered a bottle of champagne which was kept in an ice bucket away from the table, however, we were left with empty glasses for quite awhile just staring at our champagne in the bucket… I think for the reputation that the Grove has, and the price is it charges, it’s not great to be sat with empty glasses when you have a bottle of champagne across the room in ice bucket, waiting for their service staff to top up your glass. I found the same level of service when I visited at a different time with my friend, just to the bar. We arrived and were quickly sat at a booth. After perusing the menu I went to the loo, by the time I came back our drinks order had not been taken and my friend was sitting there at an empty table. This all being said, wouldn’t hesitate to visit again for a great atmosphere and good food if service had more attention to detail. Really love that the staff will take you in a golf buggy from the main hotel to the stables and back if you need that.

The service was excellent. I noticed a Irish manager observation where on q. Walking around making sure all was in order. Apologies I didn't get his name. We had a 3 course meal. Very timely order. Had the fish of the day sole on the bone. Just ever so slightly overcooked. Cheesecake was practically frozen sauce with it was delicious. But Would I return?? yes. Booked again for another pop up

I’ve eaten there before and thought I’d have the usual top notch food but was sorely disappointed! I had the burger and the charcoal bun was hard and stale. The calamari was overly salty. And the beer batter for the fish was burn and hard. Won’t be returning anytime soon.. The service staff were lovely though!

After a long awaited return to indoor dining I can only express my utter disappointment. The ‘new concept’ menu, as it has been marketed, is simply lots of old regurgitated ideas which are sadly not executed to a 5* standard. Flatbreads are not a ‘new concept’’ and sharing a chicken is an old hat and laborious task- especially if the front of house staff lack the skill/training to execute it well. As for the front of house staff they were not well briefed with the menu and unable to answer basic questions. However from previous experience of The Grove this is something we have come to expect but have been prepared to overlook due to the food being of a great standard. On this occasion the food itself was reasonable at best and certainly did not warrant the price tag. Considering the hype about the reopening I was certainly left feeling let down. I think this place is now trying to be The Pig or Soho House - sadly it just did not compare. A real shame as the surroundings are really impressive- clearly a case of style over substance. In saying that someone designing the menus has some foresight as to the weather by putting a shepherds pie on a ‘summer’ menu. Unusual but possibly a suitable touch. Incidentally I was shocked/mortified to find the menus were laminated creating a cheap cafe feel rather than something you would expect to find in a 5* resort. I get saving money on printing but this is neither classy or environmentally friendly! If it’s to do with Covid just use the QR system to avoid looking tacky. There seemed to be an uneasy atmosphere- not sure if it was us and the return to ‘normality’ post covid or if it was something going on with the staff. Maybe they were just exhausted. I would like to recommend but in its current state sadly would not. Maybe a review/revising of the menu and some additional staff training would put things right, maybe they need some more time to settle. Also the stench from the toilets between the golf reception and the stables bar entrance was unbearable- they need to invest in some serious plumbing/sewage system ASAP. I wish them the best of luck in working through this difficult phase, I’m sure they’ll get there eventually and at that point I may well give it another go. As a local it would be a shame not to enjoy this place as so convenient.

Absolutely amazing. Sunday lunch, the parfait and calamari for starters both wonderful. Then the roast beef, cooked to perfection. A proper roast with all the trimmings. Nothing was too much trouble, Milo was super attentive. The chef Allan clearly knows how to impress. Will definitely go back.

High Elms Manor was a fantastic choice for our wake. From the initial conversations we knew that the team of Ailise, Catrine, Lili and Jon cared about delivering a first class experience to meet the needs of our family and all our guests. High Elms is a beautiful location and the room was spacious and luxurious. Hugh's 92 year old widow Margaret will always remember spending precious time with family and friends. Thank you High Elms Manor team.
