The service was awful, and to be honest has been deteriorating on every visit for some time. On this occasion our reserved table was not set when we arrived. We asked for a child's menu and it took 20 minutes to locate one. Drinks took an age to arrive.  cutlery/serviettes were only fetched once our food had already arrived, and the waiter had to wrap each set as there were none pre-prepared, all the while our food was getting cold. We ordered more drinks and when they hadn't arrived after some time we chased them up, to be told there were issues with the till so couldn't be put through; any barman worth their salt knows you revert to pen and paper when the till is down. It seemed there was no experienced staff working to oversee things, only youngsters. The food was lovely however, so at least the kitchen is still of a good standard. We're now exploring other pubs in the area, as £20+ roasts should come with a service to match.

I visited the White Horse on August 27th with my husband, son and daughter in law, and two small grandchildren. We sat outside and the everything food wise was fine, my only criticism being that my three year old grandaughters macaroni cheese arrived in a dish so hot that she burned her fingers. As this was a choice from the children's menu it was obvious who it was for and the food should have arrived in a cool bowl or at the very least some warning should have been given. When I went to pay for the meal I was never shown the bill or given a receipt although I asked for one. Instead I was told that if I left my email address one would be sent to me. It hasn't been in spite of an email sent by me to the pub asking for it. I loved so much about the White Horse and would certainly return there but possibly not for a meal.

Really lovely pub, great location. We re-visited the pub in July for Sunday lunch with my parents. The 1st time we visited the pub, I understand the chef was new and we wanted to go back again after hearing how good the Sunday roasts were. Really pleased we went back again, great Sunday roast (4 very clean plates), great service and an amazing venue. Looking forward to going back again soon.

We like this pub and on the whole the quality of the food is good BUT we went last night for a 7pm booking, staff were just arriving when the menus came we were told of all the items they didn’t have. There were some alternatives and only 1 steak left! personally with this level of change I would have reprinted the menus, I felt sorry for the server as a couple of groups arrived after us and she was getting some robust feedback on the lack of availability, although done with some humour at 7.30 it was going to be a long night! There was also no drinks menu available, we ordered 2 cocktails, based on the server telling us what they did to only have one brought to the table as they had run out of the other one We live locally and the pub is very convenient for us but the menu and availability let’s them down which is a shame as the food it usually good and well presented.

Great pub, excellent food. We dined in the Vineyard (heated and covered). Service was fine, prompt and friendly. The roast beef was delicious, well cooked, with lovely roast potatoes, Yorkie and veggies. Perhaps some gravy on the side would be nice. Everything was fresh and flavorful. 1 star lost on service due to the pub refusing to take cash; card transactions only. C'mon, we're post-Covid. It's okay to touch money again. Sure, it's convenient to take card only, but cash is still legal in the UK and should be accepted in a pub. As a visitor from overseas, I don't necessarily want to use my bank card with associated currency conversion fees when I have ample local currency available.

Have been here maybe 3 times over last couple of years. Was pretty impressed the first time. There were several vegan choices , the cabins were a good idea at Covid time. Latest visit - not so impressed..We sat in a large structure at the side of the main building which , frankly , is tackily decorated. At one point someone was strimming right outside. Our vegan cauliflower steaks were really just one slice on top of a bit of mashed squash with some salad. Not great for £16 each. We had to have a snack at home later. Apparently , " mash " was off but chips were available. This leads me to think that the chips come ready packaged & how hard is it to go & get some potatoes & make mash? Something I have encountered in other pubs. Poor value on this occasion.

Been meaning to leave a review for a very long time, however managed to forget..probably due to the fantastic friendly service we always receive from the team. We are always welcomed with open arms and the team bend over backwards to accommodate us. I must shout out the whole team… they’re all amazing… however, Becks has served us since we first started coming here, since moving in locally, before Jason the Head Chef joined, she was the main reason for our return. Jason joined, the food has been out of this world… I would recommend the roasts - they’re delicious! The beef is served pink and the vegetables are cooked perfectly and well seasoned. It’s always a pleasure coming to visit The Black Horse and we cannot recommend it enough. Final shout out to Becks, Jason… our favourites… and of course Harry, Layla, Ben, Jess, Jack and Ollie. ❤️❤️❤️

Food was good but the service was awful. We made two big separate orders for the same table and they missed one item in each order. We asked multiple times the staff and we were completely ignored. Everyone finished all the food and two persons still missing. They kept coming to clean the table and we kept asking for the two items, they kept saying it was coming. After 50mins we had to go and find the manager which says that the cook missed the ticket but the items were coming in 5mins, we had to chase continuously and only after 15mins we finally got the food.

Great idea to have Yorkshire pudding wraps, however again very little seasoned. Chicken burger was dry and bun cold. Nice selections of beers. Toilets very narrow. What’s happened? Used to be an amazing pub with great service and fabulous food. However, upon our visit on Saturday the service was shocking from start to finish, (young lady with brown hair was trying her best). The most rubbery calamari and worst fish and chips ive ever had, lots of frozen food being heated up I predict. Pork belly was 80% fat, missed off half our drinks as simply were too unorganised to realise. Sat in one of the outdoor pods, but we were just forgotten. Will not be returning and do not recommend anyone to go unless these issues are addressed.

This was probably the worst pub lunch that I've had for a long time. Six of us had booked a table well ahead. We only had two courses and the service was so slow that we were there for more than three hours. The only excuse made was that there was only one chef there and he was new. That was no our problem of course. Two vegetarians ordered cauliflower "steaks" that were virtually raw, with a few burnt edges on top. There seemed to be little attempt made to check on how our meals were after they were served. To be fair, we were not charged for the cauliflower meals or for our desserts, but I would definitely not go there again.

Took 35 mins after seated to have food order taken and 1 hour to receive the food after the order was taken. A lot of what we ordered they didn’t have and They didn’t inform us when seated. The food served to us was cold like it had been sat on the side for ages. Wasn’t brilliant. They hadn’t cancelled the food we didn’t end up having due to them having run out so that was on the bill. Had to get those all taken off. Overall, stupidly slow service considering it wasn’t busy at all and food isn’t that great.

It was a Saturday lunch and the place was pretty quiet in the vinyard (we were in the igloo😄) However, we waited ages for our food to come. This was unlike my previous experience there. We wondered why service was so slow, till Sean, the lovely new chef took time to come speak with us and apologized for delay, explaining he had just taken over from the chef who had quit without notice the previous day. All the same, food was lovely considering the pressure and unplanned circumstances and the lovely young lady who waited on us (I think her name may be Jackie) was really patient in taking our large order (9 of us). We were compensated with desserts 😄. We will return again.

Whilst the venue is very cozy and the staff are friendly, it appeared to be that we were purposely swindled. We came in for dinner with two children and we weren’t presented with children’s menus. Our kids ate adult portions of bangers and mash and a basic pasta that was also quite the sized large bowl. Unbeknownst to us both plates were listed on the children’s menus for £6.50 per serving but again we weren’t made aware of the children’s menu. My wife had the buffalo chicken sandwich and there was nothing buffalo 🦬 about it. No dressing other than ketchup on the side. I went for the steak and ale pie with horseradish?? There wasn’t a trace of 🐎 radish. And (get this) my meal was a kids size portion and it tasted like it just came out of the freezer; it reminded me of a Ramsey Gordon’s kitchen nightmares episode. Being that it was Valentine’s Day I refrained from making a comment about menu mistakes and the bland food. I was close to expressing my dissatisfaction because the bill was just over £80.00 without the surcharge. It’s also worth mentioning, I enjoyed a single pint of beer, and just tap water for the table. So we didn’t go crazy with drinks or juices. Soup was very tasty! The wings smelled amazing and they happened to come with blue cheese dressing which would have made sense to include on the buffalo sandwich. I didn’t order them because we were told that the serving size is ~ 4 wings. When they were served to the table next to us, there would atleast 6 maybe 8. It broke our bank but we didn’t want the black horse to be the dark knight and break the hearts 💔 of their other hopeful cupids. Sorry guys, I’m in the hospitality industry and I know how much work it takes to run a restaurant from kitchen to the front of the house, so usually I’m easier on the reviews when it comes to my dining experiences.

Sadly today, the main course, Christmas Dinner (£16) was served up cold with the exception of a couple of roast potatoes that were warm, but not hot. My meal was not the only one cold. The waitress was informed and returned the meal for it to be heated in the microwave! When it returned it was warmer but the microwaving had caused the Yorkshire Pudding to become soft, not crispy and the turkey had become very chewy. Disappointed with main course. My fish was overcooked and later this evening I felt sick (feeling I wanted to vomit) and had a very bad stomach. My son's pie was over cooked, so much so, that the pastry was too hard to cut through. The vegetables were undercooked and very hard and mash was dry on this and one other dish - bangers and mash. I'll put the bad food down to the kitchen maybe using temporary staff over the Christmas period to cover for regular staff on holidays. Willing to give this place another go in 2024 just because the staff were super nice and the venue has a magical aura in the evening.

Such a lovely experience, as normal. The service and food from the young staff last night was wonderful. Well done to them and our food was Devine. May I just ask one thing. The gents toilets need to be looked at as they are leaking. Easy fix, could easily have happened during the day. Best wishes black horse. Doing a brilliant local service.

Who do they think they are that they are too good to answer a phone call and speak to a customer. The least friendly voice and communications.

Disappointing service and food. We came for my friends birthday and it was sadly a let down. It took 3 attempts of talking to the waitress to get the right drink given after being brought the wrong one. We waited about 25 minutes for this to be rectified and the correct drink to be served, whilst having no menus or anyone around to ask for one. The food took a very long time, and the quantity was poor. When you are paying almost £16 for a lamb flatbread, you would expect a little more than a ladlefuls worth of lamb - sadly it was mostly just salad and bread. The staff were slow and inattentive, especially considering how quiet it was.

I normally only eat breakfast here which is divine. This weekend however popped in for lunch. The service was amazing, helpful polite and friendly. The burger was OUTSTANDING. Juicy and cooked well… good amount of Brie too. The truffle chips were great too! Thank you Black horse ❤️

I was part of a group of i four ladies that booked a late lunch on Sunday. The pub was very busy when we arrived and we were seated quickly. Unfortunately after that everything was painfully slow. Had to wait 25 minutes for our drinks (which then arrived incorrect) and did not get our food for 45 minutes after our booking time. When the food arrived it came with mixed reviews. Roast potatoes were not up to standard and again had to wait for more gravy. The chicken burger, however, was a winner. The definitely need more staff to speed things up

I really like this pub. Great location if walking on the common at Chorleywood or maybe on one of the longer walks in the area. We have been many times and the food has been consistently good. After the latest visit I received an email from them seeking more detailed feedback, which I supplied and they were grateful for - good indication of a business that is not sitting on its laurels and is looking to improve. Having said that, the standard is really good, down to having English sparkling wine on the wine list which for me should be a must for any serious pub in England, given how good it is now. In terms of ales this is a Charles Wells pub, I haven’t yet worked out what the core real ale offer is, but this time I had Tribute and then Doombar, both very well poured and in excellent condition. So many pubs in London have that smell of dodgy pipes in the real ale but not the Black Horse - this is a banker if you want a decent pint. Food is dependably good too!

The best roast beef dinner I’ve had in a pub!! Everything about it was perfect. We went for my birthday on 27th August 2023. We were greeted with a very warm welcome. The waitress was absolutely wonderful in every way. Will definitely be going back very soon!
