The best restaurants in Hay Powys Mid Wales

Loved this place - so eclectic and made me walk round it with a smile on my face. The young girl who served us in the cafe was lovely too. Fabulous place, worth a visit!

Good food, but due to it being very busy. Slow service.

I mean, not exactly what we were expecting for Hay-on-Wye. Gave working men’s club boozer vibes.

Great service. Unfortunately the food was quite disappointing. I ordered butter chicken. It was way too sweet. The chicken tasted very dry and weird, which made me suspect it was just reheated pre-packaged frozen food. The texture and the taste of the naan was also very different from what I expected.

Went for a Birthday meal with the wife and I was really disappointed with the meal I had. I ordered the 10oz Aberdeen Angus Fillet steak cooked medium. When the meal arrived the plate looked really disappointing. Two small 5oz fillets that were only just about warm. A small piece of Onion Cake. One small quarter of a tomato and some pea shoots and to make it worse the Bone Marrow sauce I ordered was cold and congealed. The steak has a small pat of butter on top that didn't melt at all and it was the same when I moved it on to the plate as this was also cold. I mentioned this to Tom the waiter who felt the plate and agreed that it was cold. My wife wanted a glass of Prosecco to go with her meal so when we asked the waiter who delivered our chips he said that he wasnt trained to do that but would ask someone else. In the end half way through her meal we had to ask a Floor Manager for the drink who then sorted us out. We go quite regularly to Miller and Carter and this was by far the worst meal we had. It was if my plate had been laid up by the chef but then left to stand for quite a few minutes. There seemed to be a lot less staff then normal and the presentation of the food was extremely poor. I will give it another chance and they did knock 20% off the final bill which was appreciated. I was so disappointed and my wife was really upset as she was treating me as it was a Big Birthday and she kept apologising to me when it should have been Miller and Carter doing the apologising. A sad end to a good day.

Good hearty food in a comfortable surroundings. The food is enjoyable and tasty. A bit different from Indian and Chinese. It somewhere between.

We ate here twice in the week we stayed at Hay and both times we were impressed by how friendly and accommodating the staff were. Despite them being very busy and we hadn't booked they found us a table and the food came out shortly after. Everything is beautifully seasoned and generous portions. A great pub!

Had lunch here. The seating in the garden is very pleasant. Unfortunately the quality of the food has really declined. I had the burger, fries and slaw, but the quality of the burger was really poor. Coffee cheap and out of a machine.

Quick call in for a drink and a sit in the sun whilst book hunting. Lovely clean pub, menu looked lovely although did not eat on visit. Sure, to be a busy place during holiday seasons. Clean toilets. Seating in and outdoors. Staff friendly and service fine.

Awful food, dry chips, probably been hanging around for hours. Curry sauce gloopy and powdery. Just awful, would not recommend to anyone!!

Just returned from a short stay at Hay on Wye and visited this cafe every day! Really friendly staff, fantastic coffee and we also treated ourselves to a slice of carrot cake on our last day which was divine! We looked at the menu and there were lots of lovely things that we could have had if we were staying for breakfast or lunch. A good excuse to go back!

I ordered a takeaway in store and was told it would be 5-10 minutes. 25 minutes later, having watched the chaos of the takeaway/delivery section and food. sat on the side for 10-15 minutes going cold, I was given my food. Sure enough, I get home (a five minute drive) and everything is stone cold and needed microwaving. I phoned the store that night to see if the Duty Manager could help but he advised me to email Nandos directly. I received a prompt but pitiful response that only acknowledged the wait not the cold food and a woeful voucher off. I challenged the offer and was told it was to “go towards a more positive experience”. Sorry Nandos, you won’t have the chance. I will just cook at home and save my money on what is simply over priced flavoured chicken and chips.

I had the Mediterranean dips choice, I am not joking to say there was one teaspoon of each dip couple of olives and half a slice of bread very poor for the price. Staff were lovely but need to look at your serving portions !For this reason I will not be visiting again!
