We ate at Yak-y-da when staying next door at Digeddi Wildlife Camping (don’t stay at the attached Hollybush Campsite – its dreadful!). There is a small menu of Nepalese food and another of Thai food, the owners being Nepalese but having working in Thailand as well. We ordered the Nepalese lamb steaks with roti and a Thai red curry – both were absolutely delicious. Service was great, food was delicately spiced and incredibly tasty, the inn itself has been redecorated and made quite homely, everything nice and clean. I would completely recommend this place. (Ignore the appearance outside the Inn, when we went there were bags of rubbish belonging to the Hollybush campsite behind the Inn. The Inn itself is fine).

Nice former pub. The menu looked interesting and the starters were okay. My wife's noodle dish was alright but nothing special. I had Gurka special which was lamb steaks served with boiled rice on a bed of wok cooked veg. It was exactly as described but no sauce which made it a very dry dish. Service was ok but no interaction from staff. Overall slightly disappointing.

Unfortunately there was no one to check us in when we arrived even though the information said check in available form 3pm! We waited for an hour in what could only be called the scrap metal collection/garden. There were beautiful peacocks wandering around. Finally the owner arrived and did apologise for his absence. We were shown to our room. It was in need of redecoration, sellotape holding the wallpaper together was not great. The en-suite had mould, rusty toiletries holders hanging off the wall and a rusty mirror from the 1960s. The TVs was smaller than the average computer! The beds were comfortable and a good nights sleep was had after an average meal in the restaurant. The full English breakfast was ample. The staff are friendly. The B & B needs work! Would not recommend it for the money!

We have been regular customers of the Yak-Y-Da since it first opened two and a half years ago so decided it was time to write a review. The car park, not being overly tidy, may be off putting to some, however, it does not represent the delightful interior. Khadka and his friendly team have created a welcoming, charming restaurant, where you can experience Thai and Ghurkha cuisine at it's finest and at a surprisingly reasonable cost. We hope to be able to continuing our patronage for a long time to come.

This is a good food place. Don't be put off by the exterior or dreadful campsite behind. It's Nepalese and Thai food, so yes my Katmandu curry was spicy, but I normally go for a medium curry & this was not too hot. It was good and so we went twice, 3 days apart and both times were great. I recommend the Dal Baat - poppadoms, soup, curry & rice. My colleague said The Gurkas delight needed a little more sauce. The beer on tap was Butty Bach and was an excellent load beer.

The exterior looks like it's seen better days, but the food and service is excellent. Not too much on the menu and this proved that they do everything well. We had the squid then the noodles and it was lovely. Portions are huge, so I took half home in a box. Really reasonably priced too. The drinks were also well priced, as sometimes you can be stung. Booked this as it was quite cheap for one night as was looking to visit Hay on wye and only needed one nights accommodation. Location was nice a little out the way from town but was quite easy to get a taxi. When we arrived there wasn't really anyone about (staff) When we did speak with staff they seemed very pleasant and helpful. The room was very basic and rather tired looking . For one night however I felt it was fine for the money we paid. The place had a nice little garden area which was nice to sit and enjoy a drink . Didn't try any of the food however smelt quite tasty. It is very basic but it did the job.

We came by this pub when we were staying at The Hollybush Campsite next door ( Another story! What a tip!)We were, however, delightfully surprised by the good quality food and reasonable prices of the Yak-Y-Da. We both had the mountain lamb curry with vegetable fried rice and papadoms to start. So tasty! The Nepalese couple who run the pub are charming and attentive, but we're pretty stretched as they were serving in the bar and restaurant, which were very busy. They need to employ extra staff as we did have to wait to be served and lay our bill. Luckily we were in no hurry so it didn't spoil our experienceA real gem in a quiet part of rural Wales.

After booking this B&B online from the photos that were available I was looking forward to our first weekend away with my partner..After arriving and just stepping through the door than my heart sank..what had I done...First impressions say a lot and to find someone basically sitting over a electric fire because the heating wasn't working didn't feel me with confidence..The room was very tired looking..carpet worn in places..broken socket on Wall..Windows full of condensation inside the double glazing..an over powering smell from the kitchen..shared bathroom with no blind in the window and with clear glass..Outside is very run down with a skip so overloaded with bottles that I'm sure they are starting a recycling centre, and when you drive past you would think the property is derelict..Very misleading for the photos and urge anybody to think twice about staying there..

When visiting friends in the local area, they were keen to take us out on Saturday evening for a meal, and had visited the Yakyda several times before. The menu sounded wonderful, and we had virtually chosen our courses even before we got there. What a shame - they could do so much better! We booked a table, but on a Saturday night, only one other table was occupied when we arrived. The atmosphere does not feel right. It is a converted pub, with lots of space, lots of tables, comfy sofa by a fire, a bar - but it is cold and rather unfriendly. There were no staff visible when we arrived, and had to ring a bell to get attention. The table was not set properly, cutlery was handed out wrapped in a paper napkin. No glasses, or condiments. When the wine arrived it wasn't very cold, we had to ask for a wine cooler. Water was served in a chunky Coca-Cola glass. The owner was very pleasant but did not speak English well, and it was difficult to make ourselves understood. There were no other staff about. We had a long wait for food, which is sometimes a good sign, as you know it is going to be freshly cooked. The king prawn starters were so hot with chilli, they were almost inedible, so we asked for yoghurt to numb the taste, which eventually arrived. The main course didn't live up to the menu description. Two of our party ordered the Gurkha delight, but sadly, it wasn't very delightful. The third diner ordered two starters as a main course - spicy chicken, and stir fried veg. The veg was exactly the same as that served with the Gurkha delight, big chunks of undercooked carrot, huge green beans, onions. None of it looked appetising. We ordered fried bananas in batter for dessert, and had high expectations, but were served whole bananas in a dry batter.I don't know why we left a tip, is British are too polite to complain! But we won't be going back.....

We arrived to be let in by a customer drinking at the bar. The chef came out to book us in, he took us up stairs and let us into a room that had not been made ready for us rubbish still in bin and no clean cups. Another man then knocked on the door and led us to another room. The rooms looked worn out they all need to be freshened up. We could hear everything being said from down stairs and the smell from the kitchen was really overpowering. Unfortunately we didn't stay the night, we got back in outer car and drove home!

This used to be a local pub and is now home to what used to be a local Nepalese food truck, so its name is perfect. You'll find a friendly welcome here, and authentic Nepalese as well as Thai food. Who thought we should be so local on a wet, gloomy Welsh evening as to be able to enjoy the southern and spicy fragrance of these dishes. It's great to be transported away and yet so close to home. Found this place next to the B&B we were staying at. Amazingly tasty food at a good price - the Thai chicken satay starters were very authentic and packed a nice fresh zing. We have been to Thailand on holiday multiple times and can honestly say they were better than most of the authentic efforts!Nepalese curry is also a winner - very flavoursome and warming on a miserable Autumn day.Service was friendly and quick, with the two Nepalese owners interested to know what we thought of the food. All in all a good little find and sobering different to the run of the mill gastro pub fare in this part of the world. Having ended up at the chaotic campsite out the back, at first glance this is more of the same, but it's well worth a go. Nepalese and Thai sounds like a weird mix, but never having got round to Nepalese food before, that's what we had. First of all, the pint of Butty Bach was beautifully kept, which was a good start. We ordered the all-in meal, and the dhal was particularly good. The lamb dish was nice and plentiful, too. Poppadoms were interestingly folded into cones. The roti we ordered was boring and bland, though. Service was polite, but they rather abandoned us, which was a shame - they were hardly busy, either. So reasonable food, mixed service - could be better, but could be a lot worse.

On arrival my initial impression was of " Quaintly Shambolic" however my opinion quickly turned to quit simply "Shambolic". the bedrooms were substandard, smelt damp and musty... And this is in the summer. Glass in the windows half out of the frame. Clear evidence of not been cleaned for ages. We thought it was us but having spoken to other guests (ending up in all viewing each others bedrooms !!! ) the whole place was a mess. The breakfast was "This is what your getting regardless of what you ordered" Sausages Burnt, charcoal on the outside, cold on the inside. There are good reviews of the food but neither we or other guests had any satisfactory evening meals. After the first night we all went out for something edible !.. I would not recommend this place to any one.

Very disappointing from the start. Our room, which looks very appealing in photos on the website, really did uphold the fact that the camera does lie. Very poorly decorated, appaling en suite facilities and not overly clean. The bed was comfortable but lots of traffic noise and early alarm calls from the numerous resident peacocks resulted in two nights of poor sleep.Dinner on our first night was acceptable with the staff trying desperately hard to be helpful; however the language barrier made ordering an uphill struggle with other diners having the wrong order snd also having their starter and main arriving simultaneously. Breakfast was the worst I have ever had with overcooked eggs and sausage cremated on the outside and cold inside. This B &B is one to be avoided until vast changes have been made. I hope they are completed soon for the sake of the staff.

If you look at my other reviews you will see that my partner and I are always on the look out for all that is positive. We are polite people who are prepared to overlook blips in service. We were booked into this B and B for two nights on a Groupon offer as a gift. It is the ONLY place either of us have ever checked out of a day early!Right from arrival the immediate impression isn't good. A huge skip in the car park is overflowing with bottles. There is NO attention to detail anywhere. A window frame at the top of the stairs is literally falling out. The doors are labelled with 'Word art' print-outs stuck on the doors. We were in the Pink Room that has a bath in the room. The first thing that hits you is the musty smell. One of the cupboards looks like a kitchen cupboard. The wardrobe has a shelf missing and just a few tatty coat hangers. The 'tv' is smaller that my laptop screen and you cannot get any channels on it. It sits on a 'shelf' that has been knocked together with a few bits of wood. The muck behind the squeaky bed was revolting. The toilet with a tiny wash basin seems to be connected to the kitchen fan so you can smell all the cooking unless you keep the door closed. We went down to eat. The tables have plastic wipe down cloths on them and it all has the feel of been unclean and tatty, e.g. the curtains only hang on a few of the rings. The crockery and cutlery are basic. The diet coke we ordered was flat. We ordered two starters and two main courses. They brought both of mine at the same time and nothing for my partner! I had the fish cakes. They were okay. We were promised the other starter - it didn't appear. We then got both main courses - very average food. My partner said he would still have his starter. It never came. The two young men waiting on the tables were very friendly. There are language challenges that lead to them getting things 'not quite right'.We decided to skip dessert and went up to the room. Beneath us was a table of 12 diners. We could almost make out their conversations. With the windows open due to the musty smell; the uncomfortable bed; the roar of traffic - and then the screeching of the peacocks and hens - very little sleep was had at all!We went down to breakfast at 8:45 (we had been told 8 - 9). The downstairs was deserted. Eventually one of the young men appeared. Orange juice was a J20 and my tea arrived as a teabag in a mug - on a plate!I have never stayed anywhere that does not offer cereal or fruit in some way. We said we would have the cooked breakfast. The sausages were black on the outside and hardly cooked inside; one egg was hard, one barely cooked; there was one mushroom each; one rasher of bacon and some beans. The bread for the toast was nice though!Just after we ordered our breakfast two other couples came down. It transpired that they had been told breakfast was only from 9 - 10! The best thing about the stay was the conversation between us all! One couple had to stay the next night - the other couple were also seriously considering checking out.I was not going to leave a review like this because we genuinely felt the gentlemen were doing their best and we never wish to knock people. We were told by one of the other couples that it is in fact owned by a woman. She 'apparently' had been visited by a hotel inspector and refused to make any changes. We strongly suspect that unless she does, this will place will not survive.

We Ordered from both the Thai and Nepalese menu and having never eaten this type of food before I have to say it was beautiful. The dishes were cooked to perfection (lamb and chicken) and full of flavour. The service was also very pleasant and aside from the exquisite food the decor too made for conversation. We was the only customers eating in and it seemed an injustice that it was so quiet (even if it was a Thursday). The restaurant also did a takeaway service and if we lived in the area 'Yak y Dah' would be our go to place without doubt.Very very reasonably priced, 2 drinks, 2 starters and 2 main courses for just over £38. We ordered two meals. One was nice but the other was awful and greasy. The restaurant itself was shabby. There were two massive skips in the car park full to overflowing with glass bottles. So it shows they don't care for hygiene. The furniture in the beer garden was rusty and looked to be nearly falling apart. So I recommend not to wear white clothes here as they may become ruined. We stayed here for 2 nights on a Groupon deal and have rated it a 4 because the food is a 5 but the b &b is a 3. The choice is limited to 5 or so starters and 5 main meals each on nepalese and thai menu so 20 dishes in all. The nepalese food particularly is very mild but they can put extra spice if you like. The dhal was stunning. We ate here both nights so tried quite a few things on the menu. The beers were lovely butty Bach and the gurka beer particularly. The restaurant is well kept and decorated and we found it had a brilliant but relaxing atmosphere and people stayed all evening. The stairway and rooms upstairs though really need decorating and some maintenance and plumbing is interesting! We stayed in the pink room with the bath which is probably prettiest room and bath was novel. The owners are lovely and really hope they make a success of it. The deal was well priced for what we had. I also must not forget the peacocks!! There are about 15 of them between the restaurant and the campsite. There is a good garden out the back with a trampoline which had to be tried after a couple of ciders!

I have to say, that having read the reviews, we were so looking forward to our 2 day break - however, it was incredibly disappointing. The food is very poor, vegetable noodles with no vegetables, just brown from too much soy sauce - and if you are vegetarian this is even more disapppointing - and no flavour apart from the foresaid soy sauce. Having complained twice about this, and being inedible, we were not charged for them - but we wouldn't have paid anyway.I can't believe we were in the same place as some of these reviews, as none of the food ordered was anything to get excited about sadly. The accomodation also needs some tweaks, as does the customer service. We visited Yak-y-Da last week using a Groupon offer. I had read some reviews but we went with open minds. We received a warm welcome and were shown to our room......light and bright : quaint and clean. We ate in the restaurant and, although the menu was limited, the food was delightful...tasty and authentic. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the Continental breakfast was adequate. We asked the chef about the impact of the earthquakes on his family back in Nepal. He proudly showed us a feature in the local free paper and explained that his teenage son and some of his school friends were doing a walk to raise cash that he planned to take back to Nepal to aid the rebuilding work. As it is Christian Aid week, there was only one thing we could do............ Many thanks for your hospitality and for an insight into life in Nepal.Good luck!

You instantly warm to the ex Ghurkas trying to set up an hotel business and indeed they are what you would expect from the Nepalese - polite, charming, and apparently anxious to please. Sadly everything else was very unprofessional, minimal and tired. We could see why the former owners of the Inn sold it for it needs extensive refurbishment. Our room - Cherry had one usable double socket outlet (cracked) which powered the electric fore, tiny television, kettle and any charge you might need for your phone, tablet etc. Almost certainly illegal. The noises emanating from the plumbing would not have disgraced a John Cleese video. The room was small, without a wardrobe and had a small shower room with broken light bulb which was not replaced and apparently without extraction. They stated that as a policy they do not service rooms for stays of 2 nights only and on Sunday we were alone in the hotel overnight. The food on Saturday night was very good. but there is no dinner available on Sundays. For breakfast - not available till 9 am - there was no cereal, fruit or yogurt and we were presented with 1 sausage, 1 bacon, 1 egg, 1 mushroom, half a tomato and 1 piece of toast each. We paid £134 for 2 nights stay (after negotiations!) which was very poor value.

My wife treated us to a Groupon mid-week break here and after reading the reviews on here we thought that we were in for a great 2 night stay. How wrong we were!!!!!!!We arrived on the Tuesday afternoon and the weather was perfect, and even though the place was a little of a mixture we thought it was quite novel. After booking in, we were told that we were in the Cherry room, and told how to get to it and to watch the step, there was no offer in helping us with the luggage or even for the person that booked us in to hold the heavy door that led to upstairs and was very difficult to keep open whilst trying to carry cases upstairs. We got to our room (the room was featured on the hotel inspector) and all looked ok, until we went to make a cup of tea. First to fill the kettle we needed to fill a cup then pour it into the kettle and continue the process till the kettle was full, the when we tried to plug the kettle in there was no power point by where the tea and coffee etc was. We managed to plug it into an already full multi plug connector, and had to stand the kettle on the windowsill. Even though this was making us smile we thought that it was part of the quaintness. Our evening meal, was not too bad I had the Ghurkhas Delight meal of lamb Fillets, it was very tasty, my wife had a mountain lamb curry, she thought it tasted more like a stew than a curry but said the Dhal was very good.We went to bed and was looking forward to a goodnights sleep, was I wrong!!!!!!!!I think the bedroom we were in had every room’s water pipe running through it!!!!!! I was woken in the night on a very regular basis by the flushing of toilets etc, which made the pipes vibrate like made and this lasted for about 5 to 10 minutes, it was downright awful. The next morning was good, there were no cereals, but the cooked breakfast was nice, well cooked and tasty. That night we came down to dinner and chose our dishes from the menu, For starters I had the fish cakes and they were fantastic, the wife had the Chicken satay, that she was not so happy with, the restaurant filled up, and the waiting staff seemed to struggle to keep up with the demand etc.I had the Tai Spiced Chicken, the sauce it was in tasted exactly the same as the lamb was in night before, and the chicken was so dry and hard it was like cardboard. The wife had the Vegetable Noodles. The first lot of noodles that came out was completely void of noodles, so we called the waitress over and asked about it, she told us that the noodles were indeed vegetable noodles, and that they did not come with vegetables??????? So we asked why they were called vegetable noodles and they said because of the vegetables?????? They agreed to take them back and put some vegetables in them, so out came the second meal, this had what looked like vegetables in, but when the wife came to eat them found all they had done was to throw a few (very few) pieces of vegetables on the top, so again the wife tried to call someone, but could not get anyone to help here so she took them to the bar, and complained to the owner, he said that he was sorry and would knock the price off the bill, so my poor wife had to go hungry. We were not the only people that were sending meals back, there were quite a few.Any way we decided to go down into Hay for a drink, and asked another couple that were staying there if they would like to join us, so off we went for a nice drink down in Hay.We got back about 11:30pm, but was not worried due to us all having a later night door key. We tried to open the door, only to find that after we had un done the lock, the door was actually bolted from the inside, the 4 of us were locked OUT!!!!!!!!!We tried to ring 1 of the numbers that was the contact numbers on the door only to be sent straight through to voicemail, after several attempts we managed to get hold of someone on the other number, and they AGREED????? To come back and let us in.The following morning when we all came down for breakfast, there was not even an apology or anything, it was if we were in the wrong. We have used Groupon many many times and have never had an experience like this, the whole place needs money spending on it, and the staff need to given lessons in how to run a business, and how to give customer satisfaction. We love the Hay and Breacon area and thought we may have found a place to use to explore it, but we will never use the Yak Y Da again

Our son bought us a weekend break for a xmas present ,two days bed and breakfast booked through a group on deal.I have decided to be fair to review the bed and breakfast side separately from the restaurant. The food and service in the restaurant were good and friendly but the menu was very limited and if any of your party does not like curry you have little to no choice, however what it did serve was good and reasonably priced. This is obviously a very popular restaurant in the area judging by the number of people dining here on both nights

We had a great time here and both the Nepali & Thai food were wonderful. I haven't had a Dal Baat like that outside of Kathmandu. The kids played in front of the log burner, there was good ale & cider and the staff were attentive but not overbearing. Definitely recommended and very good value too...

A work in progress this might be but don't be put off this little gem on the Welsh border. A couple of miles out of the UK's book capital Hay-on-Wye. Currently serving purely Thai cuisine this Nepalise family business is a uniquely quirky conversion from a traditional small country inn, keeping many of the original features & adding it's own atmosphere. There is ample car parking & a camp site below the grounds, with caravans, tepees & peacocks, which is separate from the Inn. They are currently renovating the bedrooms, of which we had one of the 2 in use. Still needing some work we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The bed was comfortable with a plumbed in old-style high-backed bath in the room, separate from the toilet area. We made full use of this excellent addition. But it was the food that was the star. Considering the property is close to nowhere of any size, & we were there midweek, the restaurant was still busy both nights. The family have decent enough English which will improve with time, this being their 1st year open to the public. They are very polite, obviously know their food & are keen to make a long term impact in the area.

Stayed 2 nights In February with my partner and we had an amazing time. On arrival Khadka showed us to our room there was a problem with the central heating so an electric heater had been provided which did the job perfectly particularly on a cold night. The room was nicely decorated in keeping with the age of the building, we stayed in the pink room which had a bath in the bedroom which was a cute little touch. Dined in the on site restaraunt both nights choosing the Nepalese menu one night and the Thai menu the second night both were equally delicious and the chef and waitress both very friendly. Eating here is a must. Location wise it's close to the Brecon Beacons national park which was perfect for exploring the countryside and if you're up to it a trip up pen-y-fan which we did. Breakfast the following morning consisted of cereals and toast whilst some may feel it's a let down when you take into account what you pay it is more than adequate. You can tell Khadka and the team are passionate about what they are doing and I personally feel they are doing an excellent job here. Definitely worth a visit if only just for the wonderful food

Yak-y-da is five minutes from the centre of Hay on Wye, and it's one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. We stayed in the accommodation (which is very basic but comfortable, but if your disabled all accommodation is up stairs), so we treated ourselves to 2 evenings of amazing tastes. The restaurant itself is in the same building as the accommodation, but it is an old building and a little draughty and cold so be advised to dress up warm with layers as you can always take items off.The kitchen is spotless, the staff were fabulous, the food is Nepalese and Thai, my husband and myself ordered different items and shared each other's meals so we could taste more of the menu. Every bite was just sublime. Also the wine menu is not that varied but what they have compliments the food extremely well and is very reasonable. If you get the chance to go make sure your hungry the portions are really good, I live about an hour away and the food was that good we have decided to travel now and again for the evening.I would encourage anyone who likes Thai or Nepalese food to go and enjoy every mouthful.

We were very keen to try this place as my partner is a lover of Thai food. The food was very tasty and full of flavour. We tried dishes from the Thai and Nepal menu, both were lovely. The only negative is that we had to wait a long time for our food. I would recommend that of you want to eat here then book in advance, it was busy and it's quite small. The distance from Hay on Wye to the restaurant does not match what it says on here . According to this page it's a 5 min walk from Hay but it's actually just over a 5 min drive along fast country roads.

We stayed here for 2 nights using a Groupon voucher in February. It is very close to Hay on Wye and we enjoyed our time there. The outside is rather shabby and there is still a lot saying its old name which is confusing. Also not clear where to enter as you approach. There are only 3 rooms to the b&b. We stayed in the green room. It was basic and a bit shabby round the edges - peeling paper, cracks in walls, one light wouldn't reach a socket, wardrobe had no handle. Having said that, what there was was clean and useable - but don't expect much from the accommodation. We also only had an electric radiator and it was cold at times. The restaurant was also quite cold - one fire down one end and an electronic fire at the other. The food however was very reasonably priced and delicious - we had Thai - the starters and main were very generous and tasty. I would eat here again but may not stay again. Staff were lovely. A few basic touches to accommodation would make a huge difference.

We stayed here this weekend with two friends. There are only 3 rooms here so we booked in advance. When we arrived, we were shown to our room which appeared comfortable but a little run down. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was hot and powerful which was good enough for us. I would recommend packing some extra layers as it is cold up in the Beacons. We ate in the restaurant the first night, the food was amazing, 5*. The food is freshly cooked to order and reminded us of our time in Thailand. We would definitely recommend it. We ordered squid, chicken satay & fishcakes to start, and chicken fried rice & red curry for main. The bottled wines are very reasonable, they also have local Welsh ale and Nepalese lagers which are lovely. We slept in the 'green room' which, again was comfortable, but we could hear every conversation word for word downstairs, day and late at night which kept us awake on one night.Breakfast is basic, but fine. There is a choice of muesli, bran flakes and orange juice. They also make toast and tea/coffee. We would return for food but unsure weather we would stay again.

My husband and I went to the Hollybush Inn for a weekend of canoeing and intrigue about Hay on Wye. We had bought a weekend deal on Groupon and read the reviews. What a spectacular place! We rolled up apprehensively but were exceedingly delighted by what we saw. We had chosen the Pink Room, but as the only guests that weekend we could have chosen the others. There was a bath in the room (unusual) but more importantly clean, as was the toilet and the bed. So no complaints at all, only compliments. The restaurant, which is Nepalese is very good indeed. There is a limited but then again ample menu. My husband still raves about the Lamb that he chose, he loved it so much. He particularly liked the fact that the kitchen door was open for you to see what he was doing. The serving staff were just so lovely and welcoming. The 'owner' was very hard working as his wife was also in hospital at the time that we visited. The guerkas are working really hard to make the Bed and Breakfast a great place to stay. We had the best time, the best clean food and the best service. I can not recommend this place highly enough. We are going back next Summer!!a

Went to Yak y da as part of a party of 10 we had a what they described as a buffet this involved the waitress bring out large bowls of a variety of dishes, all of which were served hot. The starter was enough for a main course! Very good value and great tasting would highly recommend we will be returning to sample their standard menu.

We booked this Guesthouse as part of a Groupon deal due to the reviews praising the amazing food & upon arrival the staff gave us a very friendly welcome & showed us to the "Green Room" which was to be our home for two nights. This site has only a few rooms but ours was very clean, the bed comfortable & all the usual facilities you would expect to find (the shower was very powerful, a nice plus point). We knew the restaurant was closed on Sunday night so had a mediocre meal out in Hay-on-Wye (should have looked at Trip Advisor before booking!!). Our breakfast was well cooked & plentiful with coffee or tea. Monday evening we had an AMAZING Nepali curry. I had "Red Prawn" & my other half had "Village Lamb" both were good value. The bar also has a very good range of interesting beers form China & Napal that, as we were not driving, we enjoyed. To sum up, if you are prepared to look past a few rough edges, this Guesthouse is a bargain with great staff, good service and with camping, Yurts & canoeing it should appeal to many a traveller.

while staying locally we stumbled upon this Nepalese / thai restaurant. Everything is cooked from scratch by one or two chefs, so it's not the fastest service in the world but the staff are friendly and the food wonderfully tasty and very reasonable. I would recommend the Tom Yum soup and thai chilli chicken. If we were in the area again we would definitely return.

Great food. Great beer. Cheap prices. The attention to detail is good. My daughter especially likes the poppadom cooked to the shape of a flower. The chef obviously knows his stuff! The Kathmandu Curry was delicious. Big chunks of lean and tasty meat, with a nice heat and several layers of flavour.

We only stopped by here because we were staying at the Hollybush campsite and didn't want to drive elsewhere, but we both love Thai food anyway. It was empty upon arrival but started to fill up with diners a little later on, thankfully. Both staff and restaurant were warm and welcoming.I wasn't particularly excited by the menu (Thai green curry and Thai red curry for mains plus a couple of other dishes) so chose at random one of the other dishes and both starter and main were really excellent; perfectly cooked and tender chicken and some really great flavours going on. Hubby went for dishes from the Nepali side of the menu and also thought they were good.If I lived locally I probably would dine here again and would recommend to anyone in the area.

What a transformation - the dingy old Hollybush has a new lease of life. Inside is clean and welcoming. The nepalese menu is a refreshing change, I have been 3 times now and love the Dal Bhat. Everything I have eaten there tastes really fresh. Great food, great value, lovely atmosphere. Noticed they also offer Breakfast and Lunch so will be back soon to see what they offer.

What a find and a great curry! We reserved a table and it was a good call as there were plenty of people who hadn't and had to wait! Curry was very tasty and we stuck to the Nepalese menu and we're not disappointed with the portion size, or the cost. Would definitely go back and try some more of their dishes. What a great find as it is hidden in a pub and you could drive by if you didn't know otherwise.

We were staying at local campsite and this restaurant was at the entrance. From the outside car park area you might be inclined to drive on but because we were staying nearby, we had a look at the menu, liked what we saw and decided to try it.Inside, the restaurant was warm and inviting and not what we expected from the outside. It was a really comfortable place to eat. Then there was the food.We decided to go with a Nepalese starter and mains and a Thai dessert. We were not disappointed. I cannot speak highly enough about their food. Hubby started with Alloo Dam , spiced sauteed potatoes. I had a taste of these and wished I had ordered my own portion. For mains, hubby had Kathmandu vegetarian curry. I had noodles with chicken in a soya sauce. I have been trying to encourage my husband to try noodles for years. This time I succeeded. He loved his curry but said he would return so he could have noodles the next time. Best noodle dish I have tasted in a long time. The spring onion and peppers cooked through it gave it crunch and a delicious fresh taste. As for the dessert which was Thai fried banana. The batter was light, crispy, none greasy and very very tasty. I want that recipe. All I can tell you is the descriptor says Banana dipped in a light spiced batter with nutmeg, cinnamon and lemon. It was served with ice cream (great quality) and topped with coconut. Wow wow wowTop score without a doubt for taste, portion size ( we had to wait a good twenty minutes before we could face sharing the dessert) and price. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.Take away food is available with 10% discount which reminds me I also had my very first experience of having a restaurant bill rounded down. The downside, it does not open on Sundays.

It's been a few years since I last visited The Lantern, So I thought I would give it a go. Really glad that I did, as the food & service were as great as I remembered. Tried the Crispy Beef with salt, pepper & chilli, and it was pretty Zingy! The nice lady had warned me that it was quite spicy, and it hit the spot nicely. Really nice aftertaste following the initial hit, with lovely flavours. Will be visiting again! Scans of the latest menu att'
