A pint, and a half pint of Night Jar porter plus a Sauvignon spritzer to begin followed by an outstandingly good lunch: Puttanesca pizza ( anchovies), Porchetta with delicious crackling, Soup of the day, leek and potato (home made), accompanied by 2 Nudja bruchetta. Finished off with: Home made warm brownie with ice cream Single scoop of ice cream Large americano. Great service The unanimous view of the three of us was that we'd had another excellent experience. Great place for lunch on a rainy Saturday. Had a pint of Butty Bach which was ace. Food-wise, we had the beef brisket and the porchetta. Vegetables and gravies were ace on both dishes, but the meat for both of us was a bit tougher than expected, so 4 stars here rather than 5. I’d definitely go back and eat here again though. A traditional pub, with a very welcoming and warm atmosphere. Locals and tourists alike mix in here and it just works, there are no strange moments of "you're not local" as you walk in, the people here are a real testament to Hay-On-Wye. This pub is just an easy place to kick back and enjoy a good pint, of which there are a great selection from your Lagers to craft ales to bitters, and none too expensive either, spent £9 on a pint of Butty Bach and Staropramen. Dog friendly as well which is always a bonus!

Called in here today (Monday) with my wife and a friend & two dogs for some mid afternoon lunch and a refreshing drink after a few hours around this lovely town. It’s dog friendly which suited us obviously and we found the staff to be very warm and welcoming. The food was great as was the service, very attentive. If I’m honest it didn’t look quite ‘open’ from the roadside but wow inside it’s a totally different story. So glad we called by. Nice clean, modern toilets upstairs. It’s clearly a very old building but has some lovely modern & tasteful touches, we also noticed the outside seating area too. The friendly & quick service was key us (along with the quality of food we had of course) the staff/owners clearly care about this business. Venture in you shouldn’t be disappointed.

Sunday Lunch not enough meat got one slice of fatty pork, small portion of side vegetables to share between two of us and two small roast potatoes. Everything was luke warm, had to ask for apple sauce and crackling as it should of come with it, 2 small rubbery pieces came out cold from young waitress who didn't want to be there (told to work by her family I expect) To me it looked like everything had been cooked way ahead of time and then heated or not heated up efficiently enough. Perhaps too many covers, too little meat but as their menu is basically just roast options you would of thought that someone should be doing the maths correctly, or offer 2 slices of different meats if they were getting low on one joint. Disappointed as reviews for some other dishes looked quite good.

Don’t bother looking elsewhere for your Sunday Roast in Hay. We had originally walked into another pub up the road but told Sunday Lunch was finished at 2:45 and that no orders from the regular menu would be taken for at least another 40 minutes. We had a quick pint and left hungry. Walking down the main road we stumbled across Three Tuns. This place couldn’t have been more different. Welcoming and friendly, we managed to fins a table and enjoyed a lovely pint of their own ale. The two roast dinners were generous and well cooked, hitting the spot perfectly! This will be our go-to pub in Hay and we will certainly be back for the delicious Sunday roast!

Three of us had lunch on 18/09/2024. I had 3 bruchetta: two caprese and one cannelloni: delicious. My wife had the salmon tagliatelle, also delicious. Our friend had the platter which was amazing feast: meat, cheeses, olives, salads, bread and breadsticks... fabulous. My wife and I enjoyed the local Wye Valley Brewery Nightjar stout on tap. Had I not been driving I would have tried the Three Tuns bitter, also on tap. The service was good and the staff super helpful. I have to admit that my heart sank when I first viewed the menu as it was mainly Italian plus some burger choices; but I hadn't realized that it's all freshly prepared and not out of a packet. The prices were very reasonable too. What a happy discovery. Highly recommended.

We joined the family here for dinner one Monday evening. It was extremely busy and the staff looked to be struggling to cope. When the waitress delivered the drinks we all slowly unwrapped our cutlery to use the serviettes to mop up the mess. When we asked about the provenance of the meat the waiter said he didn't know! Honest I guess but there was no effort to find out. And don't be fooled by the term 'slaw'-in reality it's a teaspoon of dried carrot and rubbery red cabbage. I should have given one star but it was good they were open on a Monday.

We met up with friends from different areas for a random lunch. We hadn't booked and a table for 10 was quickly set up. They are welcoming to dogs, kids and vegans and everyone's tastes were catered to including my daughter just starting out with spicy food so the recipe was adapted for her and she was even brought a glass of milk when she found things a little hot. Everyone very friendly and welcoming and helpful and lovely from the bar to the service to the kitchen. They were clearly very busy and we had to delay ordering to wait for some of our group to arrive so the food did take a while to arrive, but I think that was because we hit the busiest time of day with a large group. This place is amazing, we asked our hosts for a good place to eat and they said to come here. Delicious Italian food, pasta and pizza and a great atmosphere. Staff were really great and the Boss was a star landlord, we enjoyed the place so much we went back for burger and chips the next day and that was superb. Very busy pub with lots of people eating and you can see why with food this good. We don't live that far away and pop to Hay every now and then for a day out and now we've found our fav pub in Hay. Thanks and see you next time. Nathan and Lynne P.S Went back again for a pizza as we were peckish and shared one and had a couple of pints. The barman with the shaved head who had looked after us all weekend was amazing once again. However when I came to pay for my food there was another couple with a baby that wanted to pay and the other barman with black hair asked who was next. I said let them go first and he served them, then ignored me and served five other people before coming back to me, leaving me standing. The other nice barman with shaved head picked up on it and said I'll be with you as soon as I can. We had eaten there three times this weekend and felt really looked after by the first barman, I cannot thank him enough. However I felt the arrogance of the second barman really blew it for us and now I think let's not go back. Shame it tinged the service there, because if I don't say anything you won't know.

We were booked in for Sunday roast. On booking we told the restaurant about the foods I am allergic to (one of which is egg). Upon arrival we confirmed with the bar staff the allergies I suffer with. On ordering the roast beef I was asked what my allergies were again and then I was asked by the staff again a few minutes later. At this point I have spoke to 3 different members of staff about my allergies. For dessert, I asked for ice cream and asked the staff at the time I ordered if it had egg in, I was told “I will check”. The ice cream arrives and just as I was enjoying my second spoonful of ice cream a member of staff ran up the stairs to tell to stop eating as the ice cream may have egg in. As anyone who has had an allergic reaction can tell you, this can be a very stressful experience. A nervous 5 minutes later a 4th member of staff (who I assume was the manager) ran up to tell me that it didn’t have egg in. He was very apologetic. To further apologies our deserts and drinks were refunded. This experience spoilt what was intended to be a relaxing Sunday roast. The overbearing experience from being asked so many times about my allergies made me nervous that the front of house and kitchen had no confidence, experience or training with dealing with what in reality are quite simple allergies. The incident with the ice cream summed it all up. I think the staff would have been more relaxed and capable if I had walked in and announced I had a bomb instead! For the sake of balance, the roast beef was really good, as was the gravy, I would recommend going if visiting and you don’t have any allergies

Built around 1600, this is a really charming old pub. And the food and beer is top-notch too. Really friendly to-boot. Recommended

This used to be a lovely experience but the service has really slipped. When we arrived there was nobody to seat us, just one lad who had to go off looking for the Basil Fawlty-esque manager who was nowhere to be seen. So while we waited we ordered drinks from the depressed, tattooed barman only discover the drinks were flat. When we did eventually get seated, you could sense the staff aren’t particularly happy (probably understaffed) and the Fawlty guy just seemed irritated by his iPad menu all the time. The food was good but it took an age to arrive, and each of our meals arrived at different times with long waits between which is always annoying. They apologised for the wait but I got the sense it’s standard practice. It seemed really poor considering there were only 3 of us and hardly anybody else in the restaurant. I can’t imagine what it’s like when it’s busy. Apart from the cosy fireplace seating, the rest of the restaurant seems bleak. There’s no music to fill the awkward atmosphere, the windowsills are dirty, it all just seems a bit dated now. Big shame, especially as it’s not exactly cheap. They’re lucky they have a lovely view to keep people distracted.

First visit glad that it was dog friendly. Pleasant coffee and atmosphere around 11.30 am. Looking forward to a return visit in the future.

We had booked the Horseshoe Inn for our company Christmas Dinner and when we arrived we were kindly shown to our table, which looked neat, clean and tidy as one would expect from a professional catering operation. We were all in a positive frame of mind and were comfortable enough enjoying each others’ company. Sadly, I have nothing good to say about the food from the Christmas menu, an opinion that was shared by a fair number of my colleagues. MAINS: The meat dishes featured generously sized slabs of overcooked, tough meat smothered in bland packet-style gravy to disguise the crimes committed in the course of its preparation. Also the salmon was very dry and the sauce appeared to be a left-over prawn cocktail from the starter menu that was tipped over the top - a bizarre combination of flavours and unfortunate for the customer who already had the prawn cocktail as a starter! The vegetarian Wellington suffered from a pastry that was rather soggy and the filling was all in all a hard to define characterless mush. The vegetables were unimaginatively boiled in water and distinctly lacking in taste. PUDDINGS: The puddings appeared to have been bought in cheaply and were not even reaching the quality of a supermarket dessert. I restrain myself here and will only comment on the sticky toffee pudding. Cooking time was an issue yet again, a stodgy sugary mass instead of a melt-in-the-mouth experience. We did not say anything, as it did not seem to make sense and would have felt unkind to complain about a cook who was obviously not very practiced in catering for groups, let alone understood how to prepare a tasty meal in the first place. I would suggest hiring a different chef and focussing on creating a small but tasty menu! On a positive note: We enjoyed each others’ company and had a nice evening in a comfortable setting. The front of house staff were friendly!

Three of us booked for 1.30, a birthday treat. We sat at our table and the waitress took our order. When the fish and chips arrived the chips were only warm. My cheese pie was covered in gravy?? and the mashed potato had obviously been kept warm therefore had dried out. When the waitress came to clear the plates we asked her to let the chef know we were disappointed. We then sat and waited and waited nobody came and asked us if we wanted a dessert or coffee. We then decided to leave. We did let the waitress know we were disappointed we hadn't been asked about desserts or coffee and her reply was 'we should of shouted her' I won't recommend this a place to eat.

We haven't visited the restaurant for a couple of years but we were delighted that the place and food was still of an excellent standard. There is an extensive menu which should cater for all tastes
