Evans Plaice in Powys

Lovely chippy! My wife, my daughter, and I dropped-in at Evan's Plaice for a fish supper on our way to Borth. We dined in. Friendly staff, nice cosy dining room, tasty cod and haddock with chips, and mushy peas, reasonably priced. Would gladly recommend!

Lovely haddock and chips the curry sauce was lush

As a chicken nugget connoisseur, I have to say these are THE best I have ever had. The chicken is fresh and the batter is lovely. The chips were also amazing. Most definitely recommend to anyone in the area :)

Amazing gluten feee fish and chips! Cooked in separate fryer so coeliac friendly. Staff knowledgeable and really friendly.

Fantastic gluten free fish and chips. All chips are fried separately and gluten free items are cooked in a separate frier. I had Beef Madras Curry and Chips which was fantastic, a first for me from a fish and chip shop. The curry was amazing and tasted home cooked. The chips were crispy and fluffy in the middle.

Staying locally on holiday and decided to pop in for a fish supper, very polite staff and the fish and chips cooked to perfection. Very busy but only waited a short while for 6 meals.

Fish was cooked nicely, batter was very underdone - just wet flour - chips ok but nothing exceptional. Two hygiene stars when we visited!

A decent chip shop which is well worth a visit. I have always had decent portions here which have been freshly cooked and are of a good standard and very tasty. The staff are friendly and helpful. Very good value for money.

Was disappointed with the food, got home and found the large cod wasn't large at all and very well done, large chips were cold and like they were from dinner time and instead of mushy peas we got beans. Didn't enjoy at all

We had 2 x cod, scampi and chips. All cooked fresh to order and very good. Batter not greasy. One large chips was enough for us (we bought too much as had a small as well). £22.

Disappointing fish and chips, it really could and should be so much better. Chips mediocre old flavourless potatoes. To make matters worse they water down the vinegar. I visited with a family of five and we all agreed 6 out of 10 minus a point for the watery vinegar!!

We were just going to have a bag of chips and walk around Llandudno, but the weather wasn't very nice so we had a very burger and chips. Came very quickly . The burger was very nice but oh too many chips. Just couldn't finish them all. Plus a very tasty cup of tea.

Had a large battered sausage, chips and gravy. All delicious. Shame they are closed on Sundays as would have gone back this evening

Ordered for 4 people, large Battered Sausage & Chips, 2 portions of 8 Chicken Nuggets and Chips and a regular Cod & Chips and a Curry sauce ( which is delicious ) I’d heard Evan’s Plaice was good but all good was polished off.

Chip shop & ice cream parlour next door to Draw! We always call in here when in the area. 👍

Popped in here late on Thursday night and ordered two fish and chips. Even though the chip shop closed in around half an hour, they still happily took my order. The service was fantastic and food delivered in good time. The food was fantastic, fish wasn’t greasy at all like some places. Chips were lovely too.

Whilst staying around the area on a break, we decided to try and buy some fish and chips only to find out that Evans Place is closed on a Monday. We ended up buying fish and chips with a pizza a couple of days later which tasted okay but nothing to shout out loud about. I will admit that I did like the huge chunks of pineapple on the Hawaiian pizza though.

Because I travel with business North to S Wales I have been using this establishment for many years, if they timing works out in the evenings. I know it has changed hands a few years ago but I have to say, since then it’s definitely gone down hill. It used to be a proper “chippy” with exceptional food, good warm service and a decent place to sit in and enjoy the food from the car. Unfortunately now, the customer service is short and sharp especially from behind the till. There are no more proper knives and forks, or even salt and vinegar on the tables. And worst still u can’t even get a proper pit of tea with ur food anymore. The sit in area is absolutely freezing every time I’ve been (might as well be sat on the pavement outside) and it’s sad to see such a great outlet go down hill. To top this all off, the food - whilst it’s nice and clean, it’s bland and really tasteless, seems to be no passion to donut right anymore as there used to be. So disappointing I have to say because it’s in such a good location. A good business that needs to take note of the comments given.

We had a brilliant weekend in Elan Valley. Only exception was our food choice on the Saturday evening. We read the good reviews for Evans Plaice so decided to try the pizzas. They were reasonably expensive so we had high expectations. The quality was poor though. Cheese was way too tangy, there was far too much bread and the sauce for the base was not good. Such a shame we didn’t go for the fish and chips as everyone seemed to be enjoying those!

We popped in here on our way back from a day out and the food was lovely especially the cod I will definitely return when I'm around that way again

I was staying in the area and had a meal from here the food was excellent if I head back to the area I’ll definitely be going back.

Just been charged for a full size cod but only got a junior one and they lied to me when challenged. Won’t be going back which is sad as I live in Rhayader

The Best Fish and Chips in the UK. We came here during our Wales Trip in September. The breading of the fish were totally crisp from the Inside to the Outside. I ordered a medium chips portion and it was so huge. The chips were so delicious and the employees were very friendly. Best Fish and Chips ever!

What a shame. I've had decent fish & chips, pie & chips etc... from here several times, but not today. On the plus side, the fish was lovely - cooked nicely with crispy batter, but that's where it ended. The chips were greasy and decidedly lukewarm. The curry sauce I ordered turned out to be a pot of mushy peas.

Pre-ordered via HOPT for 5.30 arrived early but it was already bagged up and sitting on the back table. Fish not the right size and peas mixed with curry. Maybe the same spoon used on another order. Tried to contact but no reply, disappointing from our local chippie.

Visited a nearby campsite for the weekend and ate at this chippy twice! Once or twice the queue was out the door, and that’s even with the very efficient staff giving it their all. Pretty sure that’s because the chips are amazing! My friends both had pies and said they were equally amazing. Like most welsh chippies the curry sauce is not the same as we do in England, it’s more like actual curry, and a large serving in this chippy is absolutely massive! Definitely recommend visiting.

I read the reviews so popped in and bought 2 fish and chips curry sauce, bag felt very light got 15 chips in each bag which had been cooked several times fish is double battered curry sauce was lumpy all for £19. I would give it a miss pop round the corner to the co-op for a sandwich instead.

Asked for Brest of chicken hot leg very few chips curry sauce sweet poor will not go there again !

I ordered a large tray of chips plus a fish, and I received a bag of chips. I told the person who served me that I ordered a large tray of chips and she said that I didn't, although she did change them shortly after. I know it might seem petty to complain about the container but at the end of the day an order is an order, what if she was a waiter in a top restaurant would she argue with a customer then?

Worst chips we've ever had. They must have been cooked several times and reheated. Will never go there again

Saturday night takeaway as on a weekend away so fancied a chippy, we had fish and chips, jumbo sausage and chips, small sausage for our doggie and small pot peas and large pot curry sauce, it is so reasonably priced and compared to home its a bargain, good size portions too, will deffo be back when in the area again?! Highly recommend the fish snd the curry sauce!

Very high quality, very good price. Owners very apologetic about recent price increases. You won't get better for less anywhere else....

This is a really nice Diner, I had the Tan y Ddraig Curry, this is Welsh for Dragon Fire, its not wrong, really powerful and delicious meal, my other family members had Fish and Chips and a Cheese Burger meal, no-one was disappointed. There was a sign apologising for the price increases but even at that I thought that the prices were very reasonable.

Very reasonably priced pizza. The ice creams looked good but the pots don't have lids so couldn't take some back to our holiday lodge for pudding after the pizza. The chips looked and smelled delicious.

Stopped here on the bike for a quick bite, the food was fresh and tasty

After a long drive on a wet and cold night we popped in to have some fish and chips. I cannot praise the friendliness of the staff enough, the owner was so helpful and couldn’t have offered a better service if she tried. The food and service was just what we needed to restore our spirits after a long drive, and set us up for the rest of our journey. Great value for money too. Three very satisfied customers. This is the second time we visited Evans Place and we have had a positive experience on both occasions. The Cod and chips were well cooked. We also had the fish cakes and battered sausage were fine. Excellent mushy peas were a bonus. Very good value.

Best fish and chips in Rhayader bar none!! Great tasting chips and not greasy at all. Lovely freshly fried fish. Best I've ever had anywhere. Perfect place to stop for lunch. Place also does ice cream etc for takeaway. There is seating out front but the road can be very busy and noisy. Lovely friendly staff!

I asked for pie and chips and cockney woman give me pie & chips plus fish and chips I challenged her she tryed to twist it saying I can't understand you with the face mask on using that as excuse I had my money back for the fish& chips I didn't order this cockney woman needs to go on a customer training course

Popped in for take away fish chips. The staff were welcoming and cheery and no wonder! The fish and chips were excellent and freshly cooked and the curry sauce was probably the best that I have tasted for a while. Great chips and well cooked...

We waited nearly an hour for our food and no apology from any staff member. Food was nice, however didn’t like it being served in a bag, a box would be better. Probably won’t return.

They don't do fast food, they do good food as quickly as possible.

A choice of cod, haddock or plaice (and not an eyelid raised if a non-cod option is ordered) is usually an indicator of the highest quality F&C and so it is at Evan's Plaice. Everything to like including Covid safety.

I travel around Wales alot and this is the best chippy in Wales as far as I'm concerned. And I'm a fussy *******. Fish is delicious. Chips are delicious. And the pies are to die for. Not your boring bog standard pukka pies. But locally made pies including steak n ale and chicken, ham and leek. I'm Making myself hungry writing this lol. I always try and go here even if I'm just passing through. I even plan my journey around a visit here. Lol..

After queuing for over half an hour we were very disappointed with the fish and chips. The chips were burnt and soggy obviously don’t use Maris Piper. There were burnt bits in the bag. I think a change of oil and better quality potatoes would...

The chips were greasy and mushy, not very nice. We had sausages which were tasty. We spent 4 days in Rhayader and very disappointed with the quality of takeaway vailable. The Spice Hut was terrible. I'd recoomnend avoiding them and bring your own food.

Got 2 portions of chips and they were both vile. They were covered in grease and the oil both smelled and tasted disgusting/old. Additionally a lot of the chips were black? Don't know how this place has any decent reviews, I wish I could get a refund and give 0 stars.

I read the reviews as you do, which were mostly positive, and I was expecting better but was really disappointed. I will say the staff were very friendly, but the chips were greasy and fish was….either frozen or reheated from lunchtime it had a dry texture and odd flavour. The batter was chewy around the edges and soggy everywhere else. Portion size was small, although it was good value being far cheaper than Bedfordshire. The reviews are generally positive but I can only think I must have went at the wrong time of day. I will go again and hope for better.

Cooked to order but disappointing food. Very greasy batter on the fish flowed onto the chips below. I say chips, but they were bits of chips mainly not many full sliced chips. First and last visit.

Ordered over the phone but was told I had to queue on arrival anyway, so had to queue for 15 minutes in an enclosed space with lots of other people while my food was sat under a heat lamp. Wouldn't have minded but it says "phone orders welcome" on the menu.

Always had good food and service, on days where I do not feel like cooking.

This was a quick pit stop whilst on the A470 in the evening. Staff were very pleasant, it felt very Covid secure. Service was quick, veggie burger, chips 'n' peas twice was nice What else do you want?

Nice place friendly staff, covid compliant, allowing only 2 in at a time, easy to order through Facebook or over the phone, we requested a collection time and it was ready for then, parking outside but limited spaces, handy pub next door if you fancy a swift one before your food, we had the feed the family pizza meal deal, good value and all food was decent,
