Andrews Fish Bar in Powys

I went on Saturday 5/10/24 at 12.15 pm approx. I was wearing a green hooded top and green trousers. I stood politely while they finished serving a customer. Whilst I waited the customer left and another person just walked in front of me and up to the counter. The employees just served this customer and ignored me. Then as this customer left another walked in and guess what. They ignored me again and served this customer. It’s part of being a customer facing employee to recognise who comes in and when. When I pulled a face of “what’s going on” a second young lady asked me what I wanted. I mentioned that 2 persons had been served before me but she offered no apology or explanation. I bought 2 mini fish and chips which were average and certainly “not the best in wales.” Sorry but service was lacking on this occasion.

Fish was cooked to order. Very good value the light selection, down side the fish and chips were not drained of oil.

Saw Andrews fish and chips recommended and had to try when we stayed near Welshpool. Wasn't disappointed at all. Lovely crispy batter, tasty cod and a good helping of chips. Thanks 👌 Would recommend a visit.

Nice fish and chips but there expensive

Absolte rubbish, spent £15 had to give it to the dog and he turned his nose up, very poor, i can honestly say we will not be returning!

Freshly cooked chips & fish. Nice batter & scampi was nice too. My pie was good and the chips hot & tasty. Staff working really hard to get all the orders out. Will visit again.

Fantastic, meaty fish. Crunchy and fluffy chips. They also serve the great Ben Shaws bitter shandy. Staff were friendly too.

Probably the best fish and chip shop in the local area. Quality products, well packaged (f & C are sold in handy carboard boxes with lids). Most fish is prepared to order but was fairly fast - good sized portions (none of my family could finish theirs). Sparkly clean shop, nice young ladies serving, very efficient. All in all a great little fish and chip shop!

Drop in takeaway. Food is nice & hot. Called in late with only 20 minutes till closing & still a good selection of food. Doesn't have an eat in facilities or toilets because that's not what they are about. A good old fashioned chippy, nice & clean. Can have a bit of a queue at peak times but that's what you would expect from a popular food outlet. Food well cooked & staff are pleasant. Phone orders are taken & they are on Wright's delivery app.

Besides it being pricey, I would recommend it can't go wrong really, it's a decent fish and chips staff are always friendly and quick 9/10 (gave it a 9 because of inflation)

Been here many times and had great food but tonight wasn't one of them - fish seriously over cooked chips were cold and not even chips just bits of fried potatoes-will have to think very carefully before i eat here again

Awful meal. Cod and chips, barely any fish in hard chewy batter. Large chips barely enough for one. Expensive meal which was very very poor quality. Definitely won’t be returning.

This has got to be the best fish n chip shop I've ever been to in 58 years, its worth travelling to.

After hearing this was the place to go for great fish and chips i can only say i was very dissapointed. Soggy batter and chips were just that chips of potato. very few whole chips. We will not be returning.

Fish really over cooked , extausate price for quality of food

Called in at 17:20 on Tues. 30 April for Cod, chips twice and curry sauce. Came in a nice box, so we took them to eat by the canal. What a disappointment! The fish was dry and the batter was hard and overcooked and seemed like it was leftover from lunchtime. We paid £23 for something uneatable. Never go there again, having used them as far back as 1996

Purchased fish & chips, charged £8.50 just for the fish & was the worst fish I’ve ever had from a chip shop, all batter with the thinnest bit of dried chewy fish! Extortionate & Very disappointing & definitely not going back!

The Fish and Chips are pretty good, but one time I got gravy and chips with a sausage. The gravy was absolutely appalling. It just seemed like corn flour and water with brown colouring and salt. It was horrible and totally ruined the food. I expected better for the price.

Probably one of the best chip shops I've ever been to, had large sausage and chips, very nice. Only criticism I have is that the lady who served me was really miserable, could of cracked a smile. Will visit again though next time I'm in the area.

Overpriced... lunch time "special" at £9.75 each. Fish tasted horrible and not fresh.. last time I go there!!!... *edited in response to reply*** if the price is £3.90 why was I charged £9.75 each when I specifically asked for the lunchtime special AND when I questioned the price was told "that is the special ". Also the board DID NOT have a price on it.. lies lies and more lies

Best fish & chips in town. Legends in their own right. Take out only but they've got a bench out front, you can call ahead, and most cards are accepted; the 'mini fish' isn't mini so their fish are for the very hungry only; their lunch deals are probably the best value but the chicken pieces are their best.

Chips were probably some of the best I tasted. Enough to warrant a second journey later in the week. Well done!

The quality of food and the service is always good. The fish and chips are of a good standard. Fish served varies from large chunky white flesh to meaner pieces same price. Recent visit to shop was a bit disappointing but this is unusual. Batter was disappointing too. Im sure this was a one off so we look forward to our next visit.

Stopped there for early evening meal and not disappointed, excellent service, really friendly and helpful.and reasonably priced, Chips were lovely but the fish, wow, it was literally half a cod, so tasty, and the batter was light and crunchy, 4 hungry men went away contented. Highly recommended

Andrew's Fish Bar has been voted The Best Chip Shop in Wales, so with such a high accolade we had to pay them a visit. It was very popular, which is always a good sign! They have a very extensive menu here and are 5 star food hygiene rated, which is something I always look for. I phoned prior to our visit to ask about allergens as I have special dietary needs. NOTE: The chips here are cooked separately from everything else but the oil is filtered through the other fryers. The fish is also cooked separately but again in filtered oil from the other fryers. The fish batter is vegan as it only contains flour and water. The staff here are friendly, helpful and very efficient! We placed our order and didn't have to wait long, despite the steady flow of customers. Everything was piping hot and absolutely delicious! I'd say that Andrew's Fish Bar is among the best I've ever visited but I can't comment for the whole of Wales! 😂 Very highly recommended! A big Well Done to all who work here!

Poor service by a surly staff member who barely acknowledged my existence on entering the shop. Communicated through a series of snapped instructions..felt most unwelcome & a nuisance for being in their shop. Fish & chips twice £22.10 with tartare sauce…uncooked batter on one with a taste of old oil..the other was so dark & crunchy it was as if it had been refried..chips were mediocre but tasted of old, tired oil.. Would have taken them back but were en route up north..certainly won’t detour on our way back..

I visited today lunch time and order a mini fish curry sauce lunchbox which was on special on the board outside it cost me £9.75. Now I know why there was no price outside over priced won’t be calling in there again.

Very good fish and chip supper, both fish and chips could have been a little bit hotter. No complaints about the quality of the food. Staff Surly 😠 They didn’t very happy to serve us. Seemed quite miserable. Does not entice us to return in a hurry.

Great fish and chip bar. Quick service considering how busy it gets. Only thing that lets it down for me is the pukka pies.. the steak and kidney pies are more like the ones Tesco sell (with the red foil bases) rather than the silver based ones i'm used to (silver are larger and meatier).. This seems common in Wales though so maybe Pukka don't sell the same ones in Wales. Parking can ve awkward....Other than that it is an outstanding place to get fish and chips.

This is a typical chip shop serving what you would expect. The fish and chips were delicious and the staff friendly and helpful. You have to pay extra for the view in the photo!

It says "award winning", but we found that the fish and chips were average. The fish was thin, and the chips were greasy and had "black bits" in the potato. The Cornish Pasty pastry was thick and dry, and there was not alot of filling inside. The chicken breast was well cooked and tasty, but was a little dry.

So i drove 54 miles just to come back here ..3rd time now and last week i was soooo disappointed..i ordered a large fish and chips..they closed the box so quickly i couldnt see inside..i went to the car in the car park by the canal amd upon opening my box i was so sad..what should have being a large..i had little chips..and the fish was medium sized..dont know if thats why thry closed the box fast so I dont complain..but please..if someone pays for a large..give them the large fries amd large cod..i like this place too much to stop driving 54 miles to get it ..willl try it again and hope that i cam get the large the way it should be like the 2 other times i came and left Welchpool happy..filled..and cant stop talking about your food..thats the only reason didnt give a 5 star..but i will be back in July because it delicious

Can’t believe you close at 9pm on a Friday and Saturday! New to the area and thought you’d be open until at least 10.

Chips were lovely,but the pie was really hard on the outside,the filling on the top was too.

Food is ok, but very small portions of chips for the price! You can get much better portions locally for the same price. Choice was quite limited too.

Best chippy in the area. You will probably only need their mini fish and chips.

Passed through Welshpool on the way to collect a boat from Newtown, Used to know Costas's father wonderful man. Costas's mother used to make the best fishcakes in Wales. if you had the best shop in the world someone would moan. excellent shop .

Went whilst doing the Offa's dyke path, was absolutely worth the wait as chips were absolute quality and hash browns to die for

Visited on the 10th March 2023 a bit disappointed, unfortunately on the day we went my wife wanted some Fish Bites we were informed that we would have to wait 15 to 20 minutes they did have an abundance of normal sized fish but they were to much for my wife as she only wanted a small snack, we ended up having a Beef & Onion Pie each with a cone of chips to share, I will say the Chips were nice the Pies however we're reheated to an inch of there life's the tops were dry and flaky but you could taste they had started to burn had we not traveled out of the town we would have taken them back. We won't be going back we'll be going to the Chip Shop in the village down the road. It's disappointing when they claim to be the best 'Chip Shop'

I can't understand any of the negative reviews, we've been going to Andrews fish bar for years and love it! We normally have fish, chips and southern fried chicken strips to share and they are always amazing. My daughter has nuggets and they are always good quality fresh chicken. Thank you Andrews fish bar.

We arrived late, having been delayed by train delays into Welshpool for a two night stay the Royal Oak Hotel. Not wanting to eat expensive or posh, we sought out cheaper local eateries. Andrews Fish was on our list of searches before we left to travel. The workers knew what was good, offered to spilt our mini fish and large chips into two boxes, great service it's been there. Fresh chips, and decent fish for a supper on the steps opposite the fish bar. Scrummy it was too!

Sorry would not recommend, we ordered mini fish & chips but were provided with a small wooden fork to eat it with so it was a struggle Don’t even know how the fish tasted , it was just so stressful eating without a proper fork / knife We sat on the outside bench to eat which we thought wouldn’t be too bad , sorry it wasn’t comfortable, would definitely recommend the owners invest in tables & chairs for outside dinning

Me n my partner ordered from here last night Was nice to begin with but later that night after that my partner had (battered burger and chicken) he was being sick all night I no i will probably be told it might of been something else but i no for a fact I wasn’t because he was fine all day until he had that food and he’s still not well now either! Not happy about that what so ever!

I shouldn’t have had fish and chips on a Monday! Just had the worst fish and chips ever tonight. So disappointed! The fish I’m sure was left from the lunch session and was really inedible. The batter was tough and chips were better but not good. Should have taken them back. They were expensive too. Still, I’ll know better next time.

Had to wait a very long time even though the shop was empty and the reason I visited. The staff were making telephone orders up from earlier. Very expensive and no one advised me that I could have had smaller portions. Food very tasty but staff very rushed.

Amazing fish and chips! We are so fussy when it comes to fish and chips and stopped here when passing through after checking the reviews it did not disappoint! Excellent chips and delicious fish and hot! Served nicely in a box with nice clean finish! If I could give more stars I would. Thank you we really enjoyed them 😊

Expensive and food wasn't great can't see how awards were won tbh. Chippy down road half the price and much better quality. Only good thing about the place was staff were friendly.

£8 for great scampi (12 pieces) and small chips and peas with spot on tartare sauce, seems like a reasonable price to me. Great chips, chips go soggy if left wrapped too long!

I went to Andrews fish bar and ordered Chicken pie which was lovely, also ordered jumbo sausage and chips. I was really disappointed the chips were cold and under cooked. Won't be going again

Called in after a road trip, friendly staff and lovely food. I'd of put a picture of the fish and chips i had but it was so nice I ate it all.

Visted on Saturday 14 August 2021 6.30pm I have been there many times on the way to my caravan always excellent fish & chips the only problem is the price £17.20 for fish & chips twice and a small sausage for my dog this is very expensive I was shocked how the prices have gone up for this reason I only give 3 stars even though the food was excellent I will try some where else next time for fish & chips.

Says it's the best fish and chips in Wales, so when it boasts that you have to give it a try. Very nice indeed and friendly welcoming staff too. Judging by the line of people outside waiting to get their tea I'm not the only one that would recommend this place. 👍
