This used to be a lovely experience but the service has really slipped. When we arrived there was nobody to seat us, just one lad who had to go off looking for the Basil Fawlty-esque manager who was nowhere to be seen. So while we waited we ordered drinks from the depressed, tattooed barman only discover the drinks were flat. When we did eventually get seated, you could sense the staff aren’t particularly happy (probably understaffed) and the Fawlty guy just seemed irritated by his iPad menu all the time. The food was good but it took an age to arrive, and each of our meals arrived at different times with long waits between which is always annoying. They apologised for the wait but I got the sense it’s standard practice. It seemed really poor considering there were only 3 of us and hardly anybody else in the restaurant. I can’t imagine what it’s like when it’s busy. Apart from the cosy fireplace seating, the rest of the restaurant seems bleak. There’s no music to fill the awkward atmosphere, the windowsills are dirty, it all just seems a bit dated now. Big shame, especially as it’s not exactly cheap. They’re lucky they have a lovely view to keep people distracted.

Had lunch today at The Tower Restaurant. The menu had limited choices unlike the sample lunch menu online. The choices were Tapas or a few main courses no desserts. Staff not very welcoming or friendly. Food ok,despite limited and unusual choices. Atmosphere dull with an annoying fly buzzing around.

Whilst staying at the hotel and spa for 1 night, my husband and I enjoyed dinner and breakfast here on 13th - 14th April 2024. The restaurant is located just off the reception area. Many of the tables are located near the windows in order for diners to benefit and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Vyrnwy. We both enjoyed a 3 course meal. We chose cod and the pork belly for starters, and the lamb and beef fillet for main (with a side of chips). To finish, we shared a cheese and biscuits platter. We also ate breakfast here. Lovely to be served a ‘breakfast tray’ whilst we waited for our hot breakfasts to be cooked. The tray comprised of toast, croissants, fresh fruit salad, orange juice, tea & coffee). My husband chose the Welsh full breakfast and I opted for Californian eggs (muffin, guacamole, bacon & poached eggs). The food was delicious and the service efficient and faultless on both services. The quality of the dining just complemented what was already a very enjoyable stay.

The restaurant has a very clearly tired and budget furnishing for the prices they are charging. The views are indeed beautiful but like the hotel they recognise the view alone will attract people. I had a £28 of venison which was average at best. It was almost cold and although the venison was cooked adequately there were very few garnishing to go with it. For that price, the food should be exceptional. The service was okay to start but I’ve been writing this review while waiting 10 minutes for the bill. For the price of the meal, I’ve had much better. They clearly have a captive audience with the hotel guests and recognise there’s nowhere else nearby to eat!

Just wow, we had such a fantastic experience at the restaurant yesterday evening. The dining room is beautifully appointed and the lighting and atmosphere were perfect. Our host was charming and proffesional and looked to be doing a brilliant job of managing all of the covers. I can speak for everyone on our table in saying that the food was the best we've been served in years. An outstanding combination of flavours, clearly cooked with alot of skill and knowledge, and a strong 10 for presentation. I will certainly be making more regular visits to the property. Thankyou to all of the staff for a wonderful evening.

So I start this seated in my room with the most beautiful view- it’s one of my favourite hotels which I love so much - since starting chemo it’s my local ‘go to’ as it makes the world I’m in go away- so I write this honestly with such disappointment. We dined in the restaurant this evening - food was spot on as always! My gripe was with the gentleman who I find is the manager in the dining area. On arrival we waited to be seated, the gentleman in question seated another customer and returned back to the plinth keying into his iPad - making no eye contact nor acknowledging our presence- he was clearly frustrated by his iPad and was struggling to input so overlooked his ignorance as could see stressed and felt a little sorry- another gentleman seated us - once our mains arrived I ordered a bottle of wine - sadly this did not appear to our table - once we finished I said excuse me to the First Gentleman to ask for bill/state wine not arrived - he glared at me (admittedly his hands were full) but said nothing whatsoever- a second waiter passed with equally full hands and again I spoke to him - what a difference and so polite - whilst I was complaining venomously about the first waiter - he advised that was the manager - he returned with equal arrogance to say I said I’d come back (he definitely had not) when challenged he said ‘well you could see my hands were full’ !!!!! Do your hands operate your mouth and tongue!! Learn humility and manners from your junior colleagues- however stressed you are customers deserve respect - the young man could stop to speak yet you were ignorant and rude!!!

Having seen the hotel featured on TV recently we chose to come on holiday to the area and book ahead to have lunch here. We managed to make our trip to the lake on a sunny day so were delighted to arrive for lunch and find ourselves sat with a beautiful lake view from our table; nice lunch menu, friendly and efficient waiters, and the food was served quickly and was delicious. It would have been nice to perhaps have some traditional welsh dishes, but the menu seems a selection of largely european dishes. All the food we saw coming out looked great. After lunch we sat in the lounge with coffees taking in more of the lovely view; a really lovely spot to stop and relax a while.

Breakfast on the morning of our stay was excellent. The cheese & ham continental plate was delicious, & the pre-prepared tray of croissants, fruit, toast and tea was a great idea. The full Welsh cooked option was well presented, good quality & served piping hot. Staff were friendly & unintrusive, & the view of the lake was very lovely. Dinner was a disappointment. I found the atmosphere lacking & given that you can't see the view at night, you're essentially just in a drab dining room that had slight 'nursing home' vibes. The steak was ok, but given the price, I was surprised it was accompanied by greasy fried onions and lacklustre chips. We ordered a side of garlic bread which arrived cold & had to be returned. Second time around was only slightly warmer. Staff, however, were very pleasant.

Although the location is stunning we were somewhat disappointed with the lunchtime experience. Our waiter was obviously new and very nervous but was very polite. The menu has about eight main courses , and a greater choice of tapas style dishes. We opted for two ploughman's. The let down was the noise coming from the kitchen. Singing along to the radio at a high volume is not conducive to a peaceful lunch and with no background music it was really very intrusive. More training and discipline is definitely the order of the day .

Having had the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel on my ‘bucket list’ for probably 10 years or more, I finally booked in for Afternoon Tea with my husband, daughter & granddaughter. We arrived on time for our 1pm booking, waited for a table to be laid and were shown to our table and menus were left with us. Another family arrived approximately 10 minutes after us and had their order taken in a timely fashion. After waiting 25 minutes I asked a waitress if someone was going to take our food and drinks order, she apologised and said she would get someone to come to us. Another five minutes elapsed and another waitress came over and took our order, Shortly after, a waiter came over to take our order! Our food arrived - two Afternoon Teas and 1 fish & chips. To be fair the food was ok. We finished our meal and I asked one of the waiters if we could have a box to take some of the afternoon tea home with us, he replied that he would get ‘someone to bring one over‘ - he didn’t. After another wait, I asked the waitress if we could have a box and she did bring it to us. The bill was requested and I was told to head to the bar area and payments could be made there. Off we went to settle our bill. The waiter asked if everything was ok, and I thought it only right to explain to him the problems we had encountered, he apologised and said they were having staffing problems. From my observations during the afternoon, I think there were plenty of staff on duty but obviously all staff were not trained to do all tasks! The young waiter who initially showed us to our table seemed incapable of doing anything other than strolling up and down looking very important with his iPad, he didn’t come to take our order and he didn’t bring the requested box. There were some ‘young waitresses’ who were very pleasant but just seemed to be standing doing very little. At no point did a member of staff check with us that our food was alright, or did we need more drinks, or whether my husband would like a sweet. We were given 1 pot of tea along with a small pot of hot water and small jug of milk for TWO afternoon teas, weren’t offered anymore, I was given a dirty cup which I had to request a clean one. Sadly this hotel is missing a trick, it is in a fabulous spot with stunning views, but there is no one taking charge to organise the staff and ensure that the guests have a memorable visit and wanting to return. Sadly, we won’t be returning as there are plenty of other establishments that are organised and really do want their customers to return.

We had three meals in total - afternoon tea; dinner and breakfast. I’ve included my review of breakfast within the ‘hotel’ review as this was included as part of the stay. That said, the ‘theme’ for all of our meals was ‘good quality produce in general, but poor execution in terms of quality of cooking’. The main positive was the staff - especially at breakfast and dinner - they were really receptive, friendly and welcoming. Afternoon tea - the small cakes were superb. Tasty, well-made and very nice overall. And the actual tea (loose leaf) was lovely. That’s where it ends. The Welsh cake was horribly dry and the scones which are normally the centre piece of an afternoon tea were really dry and lacked any sort of flavour. For £18 each, this wasn’t great value - I’d go elsewhere. Dinner - similar story to the afternoon tea. Well-presented, looked brilliant and the quality of produce was great. But the duck and lamb were both over-cooked. The pork belly was undercooked on the skin which is obviously meant to have that beautiful crispy taste. The beetroot starter and hummus weren’t bad at all. Cheese and biscuits were superb, but not great value (I think they were £12+). There’s a restaurant called ‘Seeds’ in Llanfyllin that we also went to - this was incredible - I’d suggest going there instead!

We’d booked this restaurant based on their own website & the view of the lake. We wanted to stop for a relaxing lunch on our journey. This place was taking us off our route, but we were happy to do that. The view was spectacular, but that’s really the only real positive thing, which is a shame. We had booked a table, but there was no table reserved, which meant we were extremely lucky to even get an uninterrupted view! They were just sitting people at tables in order of arrival. A lot of the chairs didn’t even have backs to them! We had tapas & to be honest, it was average & has made us decide never to have tapas unless in a Spanish country or restaurant. Another weird thing was the toilets - need updating - there were no windows open! When there are still COVID restrictions, a boiling hot day & no fresh air!

And the beer was like drinking a week old open can of carling. Social distancing was out of the window staff and customers walking around with no face covering. Premium price for terrible quality. Next time we see the sign we wont stop and will keep driving to pale Hall (separate review) . And after raising concerns to management a very sheepish woman (no mask ) just chuckled to herself and said she would pass the comments on to the kitchen and restaurant manager

We live in mid Wales and so were able to go to the Tower Restaurant for lunch during the English lockdown. We contacted the hotel beforehand because we were going to have my elderly and quite immobile mother-in-law with us, and they were helpful with guidance as to level entry to the building etc. On arrival we were asked to stand in front of a wall-mounted thermometer and be temperature checked before proceeding to the dining room. Furniture had been rearranged to accommodate social distancing, staff all wore masks or shields and there were plenty of notices to remind guests about the importance of social distancing, washing hands etc. The Tavern Bistro was not open for lunches when we visited, but the lunch menu, sandwich menu and afternoon tea menu were all available within the Tower Restaurant. Stretching for quite a length along the front of the building, the restaurant has simply stunning views over the lake and we were lucky enough to be placed at a table which made the very best of the views. The menu is quite compact at the moment, but there is a good choice for all tastes. My mother-in-law has a small appetite and so was happy to choose a couple of dishes from the Tapas menu, sweet potato fries and tempura battered prawns, which she is still talking about weeks later. My other half and I both went for main dishes - Stroganoff Linguine Pasta and Braised Venison with Mashed Potato and Red Cabbage, both of which were delicious, good hearty food with excellent ingredients and very filling, as good quality good so often is. Being so full, we didn't have a second course but, on ordering coffees, which we took sitting on sofas in front of a roaring log fire, we each had a home-made shortbread biscuit on our saucer - a nice touch. It is all too easy, during this most unusual of years, to think that we have / we are missing out on travel and leisure opportunities, whilst overlooking that there is so much right here on our doorstep; excellent establishments serving good food with friendly and professional service, who need us to be supporting them. The Tower Restaurant and the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel are situated in an idyllic spot, a drive to get there, yes; but a Welsh hills and valleys drive, which will soothe your soul and have you relaxed and chilled by the time you arrive. The three of us ate with two main courses, two tapas dishes, three large premium ciders and three coffees and our bill came to around £60. The service was professional and friendly, unrushed and the environment was picturesque and super relaxing. We would highly recommend a visit.

Ate here the night I stayed in the hotel. Cauliflower soup was watery, unsalted and needed cream. The crispy sea bass was not crispy and came with a risotto that was so overcooked you could wallpaper with it. We had 2 dinners here, the first one was perfect, the second one wasn’t as good. The portions are all right. You receive complimentary olives while you wait for your table and at the table they serve mini soup of the day, focaccia like bread with butter and olive oil - they were nice both times.Starters: Smoked duck breast: on night 1 it was perfect, but for the second time it was a bit hard to cut it - a tendon was running through it, and it wasn’t hot either day, still, it was a nice starter, we were unlucky for the second time.Local game terrine was my husband’s first choice, it was nice.Arancini was my second choice, nothing special. I was rather expecting a rice ball filled with roasted squash and pine nut, but probably it’s different everywhere.Mains:Lamb rump 10/10! I loved it! Local pheasant: it was also nice Pork belly quince: hubby’s choice, he liked it too.Pan roasted cod: I didn’t really like it, the cod wasn’t seasoned I think. My personal preference is a bit more taste- I know that the cod is not the tastiest fish but still you can compensate it a bit.Dessert:We had poached pear, chocolate mousse cake (it was really delicious) and ice cream. The staff is nice, I’m not too sure how much pressure they have but some of them seemed quite nervous and stressed. They were all nice! I’m sure they do their best

We have eaten here several times over the years and it always feels special when we are there. We hadn't asked, but being early for lunch we were given a table in the window, which made it that much more special. We were pleased with our choices. Staff were polite and courteous and we had an enjoyable meal.Following a disturbed night when we were woken by the fire alarm at about two in the morning, we weren't feeling all that brilliant for breakfast. Funny coincidence, the same thing happened on our previous visit. Anyway the breakfast was good, unlike myself !But being sat away from the window, without the view, gives you a different perspective of the restaurant.

Visited the Tower Restaurant for Sunday Lunch with my husband, sister and brother-in-law after having been given a GV for my birthday. Was really looking forward to it. Although we were on time, we had to wait 25 minutes before being seated despite the restaurant not looking particularly busy, although I think the same kitchen serves the Brasserie to.Starters were enjoyable. Asparagus with poached egg and Salmon with caper salad.Mains sadly were hugely disappointing for me and my husband. We both had roast beef. The beef was either chewy or underdone. Gravy very transparent and thin, which sadly caused me a real tummy upset within minutes and ruined the rest of my day! The roast potatoes I have to say, the worst I have ever had dining out. Rock hard and totally inedible and tasteless. I couldn't tell if they were undercooked or way overcooked, but even looked terrible. The four of us were given the same small tray of vegetables to share as we could see couples were given. So not enough, and had to ask for more. The Cheese selection was nice albeit had to ask for cutlery as none came with the cheese.Coffee was like the gravy! Transparent and weak and didn't help my tum!Staff overall when you could get their attention were polite, friendly and courteous, but not attentive, leaving customer service surprisingly poor for what I expected from the reputation the Hotel has.I have no idea at this time whether I will go back or not. The Afternoon Tea looked nice, but I feel hesitant about returning with any friends and/or recommending.

The food here is utterly delicious and the restaurant is classically laid out with great lighting -- it's nice to see what you are eating. The food is very reasonably priced, considering how good it was and I would definitely eat here again. Waiting staff are slightly laid back and possibly a little unsure of what is going on - most of them are from overseas, so possibly there is a language barrier. They were friendly though. We had a lovely meal.

We stayed in the hotel for a couple of nights so eat a few meals here. The evening meals were unsurprisingly excellent but sometimes its the little things that impress; like the the breakfasts. They are traditional but very tasty and I’m guessing it’s local produce as eggs and sausages tasted like they did when I was young rather than the standard supermarket supplied fare we are all now used to. As I said sometimes it really is the little things.

The setting is absolutely superb and the whole experience would be difficult to fault. The staff are attentive and pleasant, the menu is varied and interesting but not extensive - which I often see as a positive. The food is well prepared, very tasty and served promptly in what is a very comfortable restaurant.

I have eaten here many times over the years but I am now somewhat disappointed with the place due to inconsistencies. Our starters of salmon and prawns were missing the prawns, we were advised when the waiter finally came back that the chef had forgotten them... this happened to a family sitting adjacent to us too.

Ate here while staying in the hotel. Meals good and excellent quality of food. Did find the service a little rushed we like to relax between courses. Breakfasts weren't very hot but were served on plates that were extremely hot that you couldn't touch them.

You cant book a table but a polite word with staff can get you a decent table with a view which is the main point of the place. But the food is excellent and all tastes well catered for. Vegan menu varied and well presented.

We stopped in the hotel and that is excellent but the Tower Resteraunt does not match the quality of the hotel. The soup taster was very good, my starter was fine but the mackerel tasted "off" and left a bad after taste. When the waitress collected the plates my wife complained but it fell on deaf ears. Main course of pan fried chicken was excellent my medium fillet of beef was "well done" again I did complain and was offered a replacement but if I had my wife would have finished her main before my replacement arrived. The other comment I would make is the excessive number of flies in the dining area, not very good for a fine dining resterauntChef should take notice of a request for how steak is cooked and staff should react to customers comments not just pick up the plate and walk away.

So sad as the surroundings of the hotel are beautiful the restaurants is simply sad. Meal selection is really poor and I would really question the freshness of food we had. Will never call back.

Ate here yesterday and the view is just amazing. Sadly the view can't make up for the pretty lackluster service.3 courses for £22.50 represents great value for money and the food is delicious and very well presented. Wine by the glass was pretty reasonably priced as well.My biggest bugbear in restaurants like this is when nobody checks on how the meal is, there's no point in asking when the plates are being cleared away as it doesn't give the restaurant the chance to rectify any issues. Our meals were delicious and portions generous, but my friend had one piece of lamb which was just pure fat, it was left and was pointed out when the plates were collected. The restaurant also seemed to have a problem with flies, appreciate its the summer, the countryside and the doors were open, but when one fly flew into our wine... thankfully the wine got replaced.... its just a bit off putting when there's several flying right by you when you are eating. Some fly spray could easily rectify the issue.I felt our meal was great value for money and the view is stunning, but with some investment and staff training this hotel and restaurant could be absolutely amazing.

Called in here on way from West Midlands to Lake Bala. Only place to eat for miles and we were starving. Huge hotel overlooking impressive lake with fabulous dam. We were slightly concerned to see it only had a food hygiene rating of 3 but thought we would see for ourselves.Sat in the window with stunning views - on a warmer day you could have sat outside. Service was excellent - smiling staff who were only too pleased to help. My partner is dairy intolerant and they checked with the chef and came up with a solution to the lunch menu offerings. I had the roast chicken with serrano ham and rocket sandwich and my partner had mushroom with tomato. The food was very tasty, lovely fresh bread, although the chips were a bit hard.

What can I say we were blown away with the service in the Tower restaurant. The staff are most helpful and very polite. In the bar lounge we were served almost straight away with drinks whilst we waited for our table (which wasn't long at all) with our drinks we were give a small side of olives to nibble whilst we waited. When taken to our table the bottle of wine I had requested was awaiting us in a lovely ice bucket on a stand next to our table. The service for food was very well organised with water being provided at the table also. The waiters were always around to attend any bodies needs of required. The atmosphere was lovely the whole evening. Breakfast in the Tower restaurant was just as good with juice, cereals, fruit and pastries being served for everyone to help themselves before the main breakfast was brought out. We would advice eating here 100%.

Do eat here for a truly out of this world experience. Food and service are wonderful. Three course meal is £35, very reasonable considering the standard of the food. Wine is expensive but that is so in every restaurant I have visited. Olives are served whilst you choose you food. You also can have a little taster of soup before your meal. Then three lovely courses, I had asparagus, followed by salmon and soy noodles and then plum tart to finish. We had coffee ( yes they do decafinated) in the lounge which came with fudge. My husband had mackerel then belly pork and cheeseboard to follow, there is a £2.00 supplement for this but well worth it. Most of the tables have a view over the lake and it was wonderful to watch the sun setting whilst we enjoyed our meal. Some restaurants bring the courses a little too quickly for me but here the timing was perfect.

We had fish and chips and beefburgers. Very nice but average. Very good service. Fantastic views from the terrace. Can't say much more as that's about it as far as the food is concerned. Pricing was quite high for the standard of the food. £13 for a burger. But it was hot and filling.

Black beef to die for with the view to match, although during winter diner time you have to use your imagination! Wider selections than I remember and puddings at a decent size, all made for a great dinner.

Sunny Saturday lunch. We arrived late and they were very accommodating. Excellent poppy seed bread to start. Short rib starter which was a little fatty. Vegetarian starter tasted too smoky. Venison main was fairly good - a little overcooked and cold but sides were excellent. Fantastic service and nearly 5* but not quite good enough.

We stopped here to break up a long journey. Straight away it seemed very unwelcoming. My son is autistic, and because he seemed more comfortable in the corner section we asked to move tables. We were advised that was the dog friendly section, and obviously we would move if needed, it was quiet at the time, but this seem like an inconvenience to move tables. Then when my son was wandering in the pub, this seemed to annoy a couple of guests, and I know he seemed hyperactive but these are some of his autistic traits, this seemed to annoy one couple in particular, where the man was making very rude comments ( I know you have no control over who comes into your pub) but overall it just felt very unwelcoming in there. Are kids not allowed in here? It didn't seem like it. We come past this pub often, so we will not be stopping here again.

We dropped in without booking hoping to get lunch. I was with my friend and her disabled dad. They were able to offer us a table and from the start the experience was excellent. The staff member ( I think it was the Manager) came out to the car park to see if we needed any help with the wheelchair. We were promptly seated and drinks and food order taken quickly. All members of staff were polite and friendly. The food came in a good waiting time and we were all really pleased with the food. I had an ultimate burger, my friend a Thai beef dish and her dad an all day breakfast. Great portion sizes, hot and all tasty. Really reasonably priced as well ! Thankyou for such a great experience
