Hay Takeaway in Powys

On my first visit to this chip shop I found the service to be very slow. The chips weren’t great and the fish was poor. Not a good service either. However, I decided to give them another try today which was a Saturday. Their website said that they were open at 5pm on Saturdays. So I turned up at 5.15pm to find the shop in total darkness with signs on the door/window saying they were open at 5pm on Saturdays! That’s the last time I visit this chip shop!

One of the best places, locally for fish and chips, regularly stop there on Friday evenings on the way from Aberystwyth. Usually very quick to have it all ready when we walk in, especially the mozzarella sticks. Always very friendly.

Ordered a large portion of chips got home to discover half was inedible hard pieces of batter, scrapings or ends of chips, i wouldnt have minded paying more just to have a real portion of chips, lesson learnt go somewhere else.

Cold, greasy undercooked chips, fish ok but greasy too. Underwhelming food.

The chips were soggy and greasy, worst chips we've had, ended up throwing most away. Fish was tasty but greasy. Staff very friendly and efficient. Would not go back.

Popped in at the weekend. Distinctly underwhelmed by the food - the chips were pale and undercooked and the haddock was very overcooked making it very tough. On the positive side portion sizes were relatively large, the prices very reasonable and the staff friendly.

Little trip over from sunny Norfolk. Gotta say, highly impressed with the quality and service we had today. Fish and chips were amazing chicken pie perfect and service was brilliant. Thankyou ladies we will be back someday. If your in the area make sure to pay a visit here. Well worth it 👍👍👍

Dismal in every way. How can such simple cooking be done do badly

Fish was dry and had unpleasant taste to it. Batter tasted like it had been used too many times. Greasy chips. Ended up giving most of it to the birds.

Bought fish and chips for our family of four from here during in Hay Festival. The service was great and the food was tasty.

Has to be said the worst fish & chips ever. The fish was awful.

Every year at festival time we buy a takeaway from here and every year we say ‘never again’ but, like having a baby we forget and go in again. The chips are absolutely disgusting and only fit for the bin. They are nasty, multi-fried specimens and the ‘buttered roll’ is a barely buttered, stale barmcake. I didn’t have the fish but my OH said it was fine and the pees were as you would expect. The customer service is excellent but they should fry fresh chips towards the evening.

Lovely fish and chips, light crisp batter and chips that are so tasty. Nice to see they do different size portions of chips rather than just large and small. Reasonably priced food. Highly recommend

Fish n chips and chip shop curry sauce... bang on, eat the lot!

Really nice food, chips are great, burger prices are very high though, considering its just a very basic, cheap, average chip shop burger. Other than that, no complaints.

Unbelievably slow service. Regularly waits in excess of 40 minutes even when only a few people in the queue. It should only take a minute or two to serve each person. Food quality varies. Some time excellent some time average. EDIT Based on owners comments : Each time i have visited the chips are ready and waiting and there is a whole stock of fish in the warmer, so to try and make out each order is freshly cooked is very disingenuous. Ive added a picture of last nights food. (July 2022)Disgusting. We wont be visiting again. Soggy batter chips that are black, Still have queues up the street a year later. No other chip chop is this slow to serve. Something is inherently wrong.

Living locally I visit this chip shop regularly. However it is fast going down hill. The service is frustratingly slow. The quality of food has gone down hill also. Fish is often soggy and full of oil. Last night was the final straw. The chips were black. The batter was vile. The experience topped of by the Tuting and moaning about customers still joining the queue outside the door after 8pm the closing time. Seems bizarre to be so reluctant to make hay while the sunshines. Such a shame as we’ve tried to support this business as much as we can. However with the 20 minute wait time it makes more sense to go to Kington instead which is hands down a much better fish and chip shop

Had fish and chips from here and have to say was left feeling a little bit sick. Fish tasted watery and the batter was not as crispy and well cooked as the photos on there profile.Did I go on a bad day?? not good at all wouldn’t go back.

Excellent take away. Very generous fish portion, and barely managed to eat all the chips. Friendly staff. Very good value for money. Highly recommended.

We were staying round the corner from this place and decided to get a takeaway on the Saturday evening. We didn't have to queue for long and the food was delivered quickly. Piping hot and delicious we really enjoyed it.

Just picked up F&C and they were awful. Thick stoggy batter with little fish inside, insipid looking chips which were soggy and luck warm at best. Tartare sauce was awful, Mayo with a couple of bits of gherkin! Curry sauce was okay!

Fish and chips was lovely, batter was crispy, Donner kebab was tasty. Highly recommend 😃

Nice local chippy, that does proper chippy food. The chips were yummy the service was great and both staff in there at the time were very pleasant. Would definitely use again.

Lovely fish and chips, very popular

We used the takeaway during a weekend stay in Hay. With restrictions in place, pre-booking necessary in most places and not wanting too much, this was an ideal option. We had a small wait due to a queue before placing our order under sensible precautions. Service was friendly and efficient and after a further few minutes wait we were served a very decent selection of fish, chips & pies which was much enjoyed on a nearby bench in a pleasant early July evening. The scampi was really nice.

Wonderful customer service. Always go that extra mile. Very supportive of local community and the food is Always hot and delicious!!

expensive place to eat, needs to have more competion in the town to bring the prices down !

Unfortunately wasnt a great experience ordered a small fish with medium chips, the fish batter was unbelievably oily, no crunch at all to the batter, just fell apart. Oil was all over the chips so made them very soggy and was given vinegar on my chips when only asked for salt but understand that sort of accident can easily happen.

Fish,chips and curry sauce were excellent but homemade onion rings were not cooked enough (raw onion) and batter was very oily.

Had fish and chips..... The fish was amazing, beautiful thick, white cod fillet and coated in batter. The chips on the other hand were not to my liking, too many black bits on the chips and nearly a third were just scraps and old bits if batter.

Excellent fish and chips. The perfect weekend treat! The fish is boneless and with the most lightest batter. You can tell that the shop has come under new management. Highly recommended, 5 stars.

The owner is back running the establishment . It shows. Our takeaway was amazing: * my cod - golden batter with a delicate crunch, fresh, flaky fish. NO skin or bones!! * chips totally fresh. * my son had the chicken bites. A great upgrade from the standard chicken nuggets. I can honestly say that the small portions are large. The standard portions are enormous. My cod was the size of a whale!!!! Great cheerful service from Terri

Spot on food and always consistent. Much better to phone your order through then to queue as that can take some time.

Somewhat decent fish and chips. The price is high for what you actually get. Last time I went, I got a small sausage when I ordered large, and about 10 chips, it was a huge let down.

Delicious food but staff for my order all wrong and overcharged me. Couldn't change it as only realised after and the queue was down the street due to social distancing, did not want to stand in the rain to correct it. Tried to call and speak with someone, no answer so left voicemail but no response. Had response today on Facebook and gave us a free meal. Great service.

Magnificent fish! I'm from a coastal town and this was the best large cod I've eaten on years. Great social distancing in place. Would love to return one day!

Friendly staff, allergy information is displayed, good social distancing measures, and chips are fried in rapeseed oil. Best chips I've had this year 😉

It's ok, very expensive , but it's the only one around.

Great tasting food, decently priced and easily accessible. Only downside are the portion sizes and having to park on the main Street so very limited spaces

One of the nicest chip shops around. Staff friendly and organised, portion sizes big for what you pay could easily feet 2 with the fish and chips. Curry sauce to die for I love the Chinese curry sauce. Very clean what you would expect from a 5 star rating. Keep doing what your doing ladies

Friendly enough but the fish we had was do greasey

Below Average. Chips were hard - must have been sitting there for ages - and the a fair bit of the fish batter was solid and i couldn't bite into it, whilst the bit that was soft was not nice at all ... The batter was an insult to the fish! Oh, the fish was dry and tasteless. An expensive place serving up sh*te food.

Called in here for a takeaway whilst in Hay. Was pleasantly surprised, chips were tasty and well cooked. Great sausages. Fish looked lovely but we didn’t try. Staff friendly, would definitely return.

A two minute walk from our B & B. Great fish and chips and reasonable prices. Fish was amongst the best we'd ever tasted and the chips were good too.

Had a take away and threw it away. Fish was sparse, wildly overcooked and 80% burnt batter. Chips were meagre and cold. Everything was disgustingly greasy.

Poor. Undercooked chips, overcooked fish with greasy batter. Can't see how they get any repeat business.

The burgers are amazing and they do a double burger :) juicy & moist and are well priced and the staff are so friendly!!!! highly Recommend this takeaway!!

Best chippy take away in Hay on Wye

Excellent food and service. Good sized portions and the chips and fish were spot on. The burgers were spot on and a decent size.

It took two mouthfulls of our cheese pastie and chips to work out that the best place for it was in the nearest bin.Completely tasteless chips and a cheese pastie that was unlike anything we've been served before. It is hard to believe that businesses like this still exist.

Freshly cooked and delicious. Tables available outside , though I recommend the bench/table area behind the pub (by the river). Will definitely be back next time we're in the area.

Called in on way through omg talk about overpriced...mini fish and chips 4.50 its a large fish finger more batter than fish dried out and greasy burnt fat...counted 4 staff all extremely polite not... the chicken was worst been sat for some time it was inedible at 6.90 with chips...wont use that again.

Just drove to this shop twenty minutes before its closing time and it was closed staff were all inside busy cooking and completely ignored us outside. Rude and out of order

Superb fish and chips. A must every time we come to Hay. We sit and eat them on the wall opposite, watching the world go by.
