I am yet to find any better fish and chips anywhere else. The fish is cooked fresh for each order and compared to others great value.

Fab staff fab food , But need to put opening times right on web it said open till 10 o’clock but was closed at 9.15 Wednesdays

Hands down THE BEST Chip Shop you'll find. The staff are always cheerful and chatty. The batter on the chicken strips and fish is absolutely outstanding. Everything is made/cooked freshly to order- but it is definitely worth the short wait as a result. We travel 45 minutes to shop in Newtown just so we can stop by here. You simply cannot beat it.

My husband and I made a last minute decision to go to the cinema and have fish and chips on the way. A quick google and we landed on The Silver Fish. When we arrived the queue was quite long (which I always think is a good sign!). It was cash only which we didn’t have but there’s a NatWest and HSBC just a few strides away on the same side of the road. The slight delay to the cinema was well worth it. The chips were so fresh, fish lovely and crispy and for a bit of childhood nostalgia I had a fish cake. The staff were all exceptionally polite and very calm during a busy spell. To top it off it was wrapped in paper not put in a box. A real chippy experience!

Been using silver fish for over 15 yrs. 1st in Welshpool and since they opened in newtown. A fantastic family business that goes above and beyond. Always fresh.. if you want anything freshly cooked as you wait they will do so... I always prefer the friendliness here too. Thankyou... you always do a great job !

I nipped to this takeaway, having driven for 3hrs and checked into my accom before working a long shift the following day. The lovely person serving me was patient with my order, advised of the cost, and the portion size was excellent given the cost (£6.05!!! I felt like I'd ripped them off!). The food was lovely, didn't sit heavily and tasted excellent. If I ever visit Newtown again, I would not hesitate in ordering from here again.

Went in , changed my mind mid order, and the young woman who served me was so sweet and helpful. And the chips were sooooo goood. Only wish is that you get rid of polystyrene boxes for the sake of ecology.

Perfect chips, and fish was large, really moist with a light batter. All cooked freshly to order.

Lovely chip shop lovely staff and today when we called the owner apologised for our wait ,but we weren't worried ,because fresh chips were cooking .I had jumbo sausage and chips the sausage was so tasty and not full of oil ,and the chips were very tasty too .My partner had mince beef and onion pie and chips ,Our meals were very well wrapped ,we had a few minutes walk back to our car and our meals were still piping hot and the chips don't end up sticking to the paper /The portions are a good size too . I normally have battered sausage and the batter is always nice and crispy . Great prices too .We travel to Newtown from Aberystwyth about once a month with our work and we always look forward to our meals from the Silver fish .

I have lived near Newtown for 20 years and remember this place first opening. It was dire; like so many chippies. I also wondered if the owners realised that the 'silverfish' is actually an unwelcome insect pest which likes to live around your skirting boards. However moving on the fish has improved - there are various grades available to chippies and they ratcheted up the quality - although they do cook in oil rather than the tastier beef dripping. Nonetheless food is cooked fresh and they do appear to be conscientious about filtering and replacing their oil unlike many other places. The portions are generous and the prices very competitive. The staff are very hard-working and deserve to do well. The other chippies in the area are frankly best avoided.

Food was good and service was very good although there was no gluten free.

My husband came in today for chips curry sause , plus a cod n chips , got home to Carno, NO FISH ..... what an enjoyable evening meal that wasn,t, put the money in the staff jar, we wont be back..

We called here last Tuesday ,service was excellent , I had the battered sausage and small chips ,my partner had beef and onion pie & small chips ,they were well wrapped and very hot and the prices were very good ,we had the same meal from a chip shop in Machynlleth the week before ,but the sausage was very small and they were still more expensive than the Silver fish .

I won’t be going here again. I had expected a wait but nearly 40 minutes for 2 portions of fish, chips, and mushy peas was a joke and an insult. When I did eventually get the fish it was all batter! Definitely one to be avoided!

Wow, wow and wow, the best chips I've had. Perfection.

After travelling a long way to get home we needed a break and found this truly wonderful chip shop. The portions were extra large and the prices staggeringly low. Compared to many, many other similar outlets this must be tops. The quality of the food for all of us was as perfect as you can get.

Not a lover of fish and chips as a rule . But if you are these are stunning . Capt Ahab look no further . .wouldn't like a fish the size you get in Silver fish on hook tasty pleasant staff . Centre of town . All in all superb..can only assume negative comments from local rival? . Eco warriors moaning about businesses trying to keep costs at minimum ASK for food in paper . And individuals with plum in mouth worried about mask wearing considering from different country , as England , was she aware that throughout flu virus? Wales and England differed almost continually on what rules were . And I do not think that posters are going to be up and down as had weekly changes. And the other complaint I noticed was silver fish land lord and landlady ehhh THAT says pub to me and everybody else with a higher than single digit IQ..I find it disturbing that people set out to complain if poor say so yes but , have been there dozen times and have been 100% happy each time far nicer than Genie..joke never ate there 😑

Had Jumbo sausage and chips from here a week ago. Wow the chips were beautifully cooked and I couldn't believe how big the sausage was. Will definitely call in again!!

Lovely service, great portion sizes and fab quality food

We pop in here every now and then to indulge in the guilty pleasure of a large tray of chips with curry sauce and two forks, to eat by the river! Hands up, I am not generally a fan of chip shop chips, too many memories of chips rendered soggy by being wrapped in newspaper!, but the chips here are well cooked, just a little crispy on the outside and piping hot and soft and creamy on the inside. There is an easy to understand 'one way' system for ordering to maintain social distancing; the staff are friendly and efficient and it works well. Definitely a cut above.

What a place. Nothing is to much for the owner, who cooked un battered fish for me as I am diabetic.

We ordered fish/sausage & chips from Silver Fish for our wedding evening party. They were absolutely fantastic! They arrived well wrapped and were piping hot! All our guests loved them and we have had loads of comments about how nice they were - just what everyone fancied after a few drinks. Maria has been a pleasure to work with from when I booked- she is responsive, friendly and keen to help. She even sorted out gluten free and vegetarian options. I cannot recommend highly enough. Brilliant!

The first chippy to offer me batterless fish??! Perfect if you don't want the usual stodge of excess batter, just a very fine crispy coating. Perfect!

Food was nice but everything was in unnecessary styrofoam. They could do with more eco friendly packaging. Chips for example could have just been in the paper, no need for additional packaging that take 400years to decompose.

Since the closure of Genie's Fish & Chip shop (undoubtedly the best the town ever had), we've used Silver Fish a few times but aren't overly impressed. While portion sizes and prices are good, we find the batter too thick and greasy, and the inside stodgy on each occasion. A lighter, thinner batter (more like a tepura), as Genie's was, would be a definite improvement, as would slightly longer cooking of the chips. I hope this review will be looked on as constructive criticism as it is not, in any way, meant to be destructive!

Usually good hot food. But tonight terrible.3 lots of fish and chips where cold. Kabab pita bread was hard and stale. Chips looked like the end of the day mostly just the overcooked crispy bits which were also cold. As I said unusual for this place. Maybe new staff

my order was missing and they was very rude! happened more than once, which they just say no it’s all there when clearly it isn’t also felt as they over charged us from before.

Small, family run fish & chip shop. Always looks spotlessly clean, prices are very reasonable and the portions substantial. The owner and his daughters are always very welcoming, polite and cheeful. Since covid-19, the shop has offered a pre-order and collect service and has implemented a good social distancing policy for their customers to follow. Service is fast, the food is consistently good and parking is rarely a problem in the evenings.

Everytime I go hear they can never seem to get order right bloody useless I'll be taking my business elsewhere

Quality of food not good, under cooked chips and fish batter was mostly soggy. Got our order wrong also, maybe they should repeat it back to you to avoid mistakes? Also, signs outside saying only 1 person allowed in the shop at a time but there was a group of 3 ordering plus a customer collecting an order all in they're at the same time!

Fast service and great food! Doesn't get any better than this and proves are very reasonable also so winner winner!

We come from the Midlands and were on our way back home when we stopped to get some fish and chips from here.... They were absolutely gorgeous and the fish was quite large, much larger than at chippys near us, the chips were lovely and chunky... My lad has autism and he is extremely picky with his food, he had the southern fried chicken with chips, he loved them.... He much preferred the ones he had here than the ones we have local to us.. can highly recommend.

Really nice staff. Tikka bap and salad is banging 👌 didnt like the curry sauce though. We usually go Caersws but i will now travel into Newtown for this chippy from now on 👍

Havent had chips since the beginning of lockdown so fancied some Today and I wasnt disappointed. Sausage and chips and a Pepsi Max went down a treat!!

Got my order wrong missed one meal from my order. Got home found it wrong missing item was for my autistic daughter and it caused her to have a melt down. Will not use them again. Also had to make to trips to collect as they don’t take plastic.

The wife had a COD and chips, the portion was massive, and the fish was cooked beautifully, best fish in town by far. I had a Chicken curry and chips, which was out of this world, also a very good portion... if not too much :). The portions are very big and the prices are very low! BEST FAST FOOD IN NEWTOWN!!! A must try. FIVE STARTS FROM ME AND THE WIFE!!!!

My partner and i were in Newtown yesterday feb 28th and we called into the silver fish ,i ordered battered beef burger and small chips and my partner ordered minced beef and onion pie and small chips ,we didn't have to wait long for our food which we took back to our car the young lady behind the counter put our food in polystyrene cartons and wrapped them in paper ,we had a 3 minute walk back to our car and the food was still piping hot and the portions were ample . When we have been to other chip shops we have been given our food in cartons and no paper around them so we were very impressed with the silver fish service the paper around the cartons was well wrapped too like a neat parcel so it held the cartons nicely shut ..My burger was really tasty it was quite large and i could taste onion in it so i was so happy and the batter was crispy too and not too thick .As we left the Silver fish all the staff said thank you too and when we were waiting for our food one of the young ladies was singing so must have been happy . we will definitely go to the silver fish again the next time we are in Newtown it is a lovely clean place and there is a small area to eat sit in or out and their prices are good with great customer service and a nice friendly atmosphere ,

Best chippy in town in my opinion, curry sauce is amazing, worth wIting in the queue for, always happy staff too.

Ordered chicken curry and chips but was not impressed to find mushroom curry with very little chicken £6 in the bin quite literally discusting, never again!

Really nice fish and chips, they are always fresh and you get a really good portion size for the money. They do a lot of offers and options. They do have a few tables and chairs out the front to sit if you want to.

I called one evening to get a takeaway and wasn’t sure what I wanted. A young chap before me asked for cheesy chips and a jumbo sausage so I followed suit and picked that.I’ve had their chips before but not the ENORMOUS sausage or cheesy chips. It was all delicious and I’m considering it again for tea tonight which has prompted this review! Nice people there too.

The only fish shop I've found locally that does cods roe. The service is fast and friendly and the food is always nice and hot. Good prices too.
