Lovely friendly place. Stopped here one night on a short visit from Bristol as a couple in our 30s used to going out. Live entertainment was great, cheap drinks (compared to Bristol), staff cheerful. Happy to stay here a few hours and take it all in.

Here's a pub with lots of good things going for it. General vibe is," come and enjoy yourselves, , that's what our pub is for " Excellent bar menu , (epic pizzas) that caters for hungry customers who like a variety of tasty, grub to fuel you for further activities, or after a walk maybe, or just to soak up a pint or two from a great range of beers , lagers, and ciders, plus usual beverages. A cracking joke box, lots of screens for sporting events, friendly, efficient staff and absolutely nothing pretentious , hence a favourite with some great local characters...

The Rose and Crown public house, in the centre of Hay on Wye, is a short walk down from the clock tower towards the river. It has a bar serving various beers and soft drinks, a pool table and two screens showing music videos. The staff are young and very helpful. It's a good place to stop in this busy market town on the Wye Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke long distance footpaths.

Came here with my mother after visiting the town and the book shops for the day, ordered a pizza and a few sides. The chef came down to explain they didn't have something we ordered and offered something else for us which was fine and understandable. The food was gorgeous, the pizza seemed homemade with onion rings and mac and cheese bites! Seemed really welcoming as the chef came back down with our food and asked us how our day was and where we were from, he was lovely. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a sit down and something to eat after being in the town. I'd definitely come again! :)

We considered eating here for the last day of our holiday, they serve pizza and dirty fries so we were excited to try it! However the atmosphere in this pub is very uncomfortable. We got intense stares upon ordering drinks and the men at the bar immediately changed from speaking English to Welsh. The decor is quite uncomfortable and cold, with the tv playing shows about cars and racing. Probably suited to a certain sort of customer but for the average holiday maker I would give it a miss.

As an elder gentleman and an ex police officer I am amazed at how this place remains open. Rude and ignorant bar staff allowing a younger generation to pop pills and sniff copious amounts of class a drugs in their premises. The pub itself smells foul as there is obviously a sewerage problem, it’s cramped food quality was very poor as was the service. Only people I’d recommend this place to is watchdog or the police.

In a town that has lost its identity to artisan nonsense this pub is an oasis yes its a bit rough round the edges that's fine the beer (Swan) is excellent as are the staff. I had two takeaway curries over two night both excellent curry & pint £10 what vale. Yes it has a pool table yes it has 4/5 tv screens yes it can get boisterous but guess what everybody talks to everybody. Love it.

This is where the local 'boys' go to do cocaine and fight. It has completely ruined the centre of town at night, they all spill out of the front, all over the road, smoking, vomiting, fighting and shouting in the street. When the pub eventually closes they all jump in their cars and drive off completely wasted. This is actually a dangerous pub, I wouldn't walk past it at night if you are not a straight white male. Really is a shame to say this as the rest of Hay is lovely but it's time there was some kind of warning about this place for unsuspecting tourists.

Just visited with our family of four for dinner. Very friendly staff. Simple and cheap menu. Two of us ordered pizzas and we were given a top tip suggesting they were quite large and not a lot of people finish them. I have to say the reason they don't get finished is because of the kilo of cheese on them. Way too cheesy I'm afraid, and the family next to us felt the same with theirs. My Caesar salad was very good. In case you're hungry - all the portions are very large. Side order of curly fries will do two!

Went for lunch after a busy morning book shopping. Old fashioned feel. Found a table and went to bar to order only to be told they were only serving off the light lunches menu (baguettes or jacket potatoes in the main) It was 1pm, not outside lunch times. Why not mention this before we sat down? I specifically asked if we just choose our own table for food. Would that not have been a perfect time to mention it?That said the food we could have was good, nice portion sizes and good value. Wouldn’t choose it as pub of choice but if you find yourself there by accident it’s ok.

Each year four male friends visit Hay-on-Wye whilst our wives attend an annual reunion at what was previously Hereford Teacher Training College. Tradition dictates we always have a gammon and egg lunch whilst in Hay. Last year we discovered the Rose and Crown, what a perfect location with such excellent food at very competitive prices. We will be visiting again in July 2018 and look forward to our traditional lunch. A highlight of our day in Hay-on-Wye.

We were advised when booking over the phone, that we would have to choose our meats / meat options as they get busy. When we arrived, there was only one other table here, but still, understandable that they’d like to know what you want first, considering they do a Sunday roast challenge. Two of our party ordered a beef dinner and two ordered the vegetarian option. The beef dinners were enjoyed, the vegetarian option left us slightly confused as there was a LOT of rice and stroganoff on the plate, so didn’t leave us room for much of the veg (that came out in platters). There was so much stroganoff on the plate that it was leaking off the sides!

My friends and I decided to visit here for lunch during the Hay festival as we had heard about the sunday lunch challenges and thought they must do a nice dinner (we didn't do the challenge but just had regular sunday lunch). However, as soon as we walked in we were disappointed. The pub itself is bland and a bit dingy, its rather out of place amongst the lovely shops, cafes, and market square of Hay town centre!

By visiting the Rose and Crown on a Monday night, we benefitted from the buy one pizza, get one half price offer. They were huge and delicious! You select your own toppings. Took half home in a box. Stopped here for lunch yesterday assuming it would be cheap and easy pub grub that merely fills a hole. If this had been the case, we wouldn't have grumbled as the menu prices were incredibly cheap. However, what came out was fine home cooked food of the highest quality and I'm salivating over the thought of it as I type this! The quality food alongside the friendly and attentive staff made our visit an absolute pleasure. Highly recommended!

Visited for the first time this weekend looked around for somewhere to lunch came across this pub.. thought we'd give it a go.. nice inside menu was ok.. stuck with old favourite as was hungry and went for the lasagne, big portion very nice, garlic bread bit undercooked and wasn't a fan of the chips, wish I'd had salad with it.. only criticism was the lad cleaning the tables used a bleach spray which was quite over powering.. all you could smell before, during and after the meal.. had to leave as it became a problem for me as I suffer from asthma.. enjoyed my pint of cider but had to go else where.. nice friendly people tho.. hopefully a one off??

Eating out in pubs in Hay can be pricy but the revamped Rose and Crown is serving great pub grub at more modest prices. In our group we had a deal on two sirloin steaks for £25 which were very good and had 'all the trimmings' and the chilli con carne and scampi were also good and plentiful. Everyone, including the dog who was welcome here, thought the chips were delicious! Vegetarian offer is a bit limited but we found some options. Real Ale and wine were good and the service was friendly and quick. It is not fine dining - it is a proper pub with sports on but if you don't want to spend lots give the Rose and Crown a try - we would definitely go back and their Sunday Roasts looked great value
