Really overpriced. We ordered 2 spaghetti bolognaise, fishcakes, steak open sandwich, 2 soft drinks and a tea and coffee and paid £78.50. For what we had it was terrible. The only acceptable meal was the fishcakes. The spaghetti bolognaise (£18) was full of water on the plates and small portions. The steak open sandwich had 1 small slice of thin beef on it (£17). It took ages to come, and the spaghetti bolognaise x 2 arrived way after the other two items. Really poor. Almost £80 for lunch and most of us went home hungry. Would definitely not recommend.

Have been number of times but it seems to have gone downhill. The place feels sadly unloved. Service was too slow and really unfriendly. Waiting staff just barking numbers at people. Not a welcoming or relaxing place to be. The toilets were grim. Such a shame as the food was nice enough when it eventually arrived.

Had a really great dining experience on a dull rainy day. The Granary was cosy and welcoming with lovely staff. Credit to them all and to the chefs for a delicious lunch, I had the smoked haddock and mango kedgeree fish cake, served with a crisp tasty salad of fresh beetroot, one of the best coleslaws in my opinion, various leaves, grated carrot and red cabbage,a dish of rainbow delight. Also the sweet potatoe soup was another winner.

Wandered in out of the rain because. Lovely atmosphere with gentle background murmur of conversation. Friendly service with our two coffees. And as it hadn't stopped raining we stayed for lunch, which was lovely I had poached egg & spicy beans on toast and my other half the roasted root veg soup - both were delicious. Not sure when we'll be back in Hay but will certainly make a return visit to the Granary when we do. PS it was still raining when we left 😂

2 undercooked baked potatoes, one with beans, the other with beans and cheese (they charge £2 extra for a handful of grated cheese). 2 pots of very weak tea. Total cost £27 - they saw us tourists coming. Terrible value for money. How can you run a cafe and not know how to cook (I imagine I mean microwave) a potato properly? -This just shows no respect for the customer.

We arrived here starving at 2.30 in the afternoon, and were greeted with a friendly welcome and help in finding a table for our group of 7. I was expecting a long wait for food as there was another large table that had ordered before we did, but I was very pleasantly surprised that our food (ham, egg, frites, fishcakes, soup, and beef sandwich) arrived fresh and delicious looking within what felt like 5 minutes. Given that we were all starving having gotten carried away in bookshops all morning, this was welcome! We left fully fueled up and happy, thank you for a great experience!

We paid £19.90 for 2 bowls of watery tasteless tomato soup, served with supermarket sliced bread. Thanks to paying on your phone you can check how long you have been waiting. the last point I looked it had been 45 minutes. Initially placing the order took some 7 or 8 minutes before we got served and paid at the counter. The decor is excellent, a restored old granary, with lots of nice antiques But for the decor, it would be a one-star review

My partner and I have visited the Granery two years running each time we visit Hay. In our trip in 2023 we were blown away by their food and went back many times incredibly pleased with the quality of the food. However, in our most recent trip this was not the same. My partner had the beef open sandwich which was okay, but had far too much salad and veg compared to meat, to top this off my partner then fell very sick with food poisoning the following morning from this meal. We believe the salad, coleslaw and fermented carrots were out of date. We did message the granary on instagram but have still heard nothing back. It’s a real shame as this place was so fantastic last year!

This place should get six stars all round! They created a meal that I could eat (I have a collection of awkward intolerances that make picking from menus almost impossible). They checked and wrote down the major food items I have to avoid and brought me a meal that was balanced, healthy, didn't cause me any concerns and was, above all, very tasty! We were looking for a quick lunch and had visited this cafe/restaurant previously. The menu provides a wide range but the choice of snacks for those with a dairy allergy was quite limited, although non-dairy milk for tea/coffee was readily available. Requirements are ordered and paid for at the counter, with items requiring some preparation being delivered to the table when ready. The snacks and drinks represented very good value. The environment is a little rustic (as the name suggests), and floor area is on two levels, with toilets up a flight of stairs.

The way you place your order was way too long, with a long que to the front door and around the place other diners come to get water. It may be that it is a way to let the kitchen keep up, but they should figure out another system. Also, when you place your order, the one member of staff then made the drinks before serving the next person, which, again, made the wait even longer. Food was also rather average for the relatively high price. Staff we really lovlely.

We had been to the granary before and the food was good . Today , it was unclear whether the cafe was open ( at 1215) the member of staff that served us gazed blankly when asked what the soup was and couldn’t raise a smile. Not overly impressed with breakfast looked like it was just thrown on the plates who plates up a breakfast on top of the toast? Don't care if an affluent area but when charging £12+ for breakfast it's got to be spot on and when paying £3.50 for a flat white which was very small and served in a glass (not even thermal just normal) it's should be great coffee I make a better flat white on my barista machine at home and I have no training. We used to come here for an occasional treat, as it's slightly above our normal budget, but it's changed. The upstairs section is shut permanently, so customers are crammed in downstairs. The wonderful artisan sandwiches with generous salad garnish are off the menu. The cheapest items, if you want an actual meal, are soup or baked potatoes. Some of us ordered leek & potato soup whereas I picked sweet potato & ginger. It was all fresh and OK but nothing special (like things used to be) and there was a sizeable gap between each bowl arriving. The accompanying bread rolls seemed to have come from the supermarket. My coffee was average. There is nothing really wrong with the Granary but everything was a bit disappointing. You can take your dog if you want.

So disappointing. Food was a little pricey but we accepted that as we were in Hay. However, a smile costs nothing. The service was indifferent at best. While there were less than 10 people in the cafe, we had to wait 30 mins for a bacon roll and eggs on toast. Which arrived 15 minutes apart. When I asked why, I just got a weak ‘sorry’. The people on the table next to us also had their food delivered in dribs and drabs. One of the cooks wandered out to put out some napkins and moaned that she was cold. A while since we visited the Granary, we were regular visitors for many years our Sunday drive out and then lunch. So today, we decided to give it a try, well have to say disappointed! The food was o.k, maybe not quite what it was, miss the lovely self service soups, they had in the old days, but appreciate things change. However, my biggest complaint was the appearance of the place, yes appreciate it is a rustic granary, but not the toilet seat on the floor ! everywhere needs a good scrub and coat of paint. The final blow was when a party of 6 people sat close by us and continually allowed a dog to walk across the table to one another !! sorry but that is totally unacceptable, imagine the repercussions that could have for someone with allergies, babies etc. I complained to the waitress within ear shot and of course got some dirty looks ! I know we are a country who now seem obsessed with owning dogs, and they are now welcomed everywhere, yes quite happy with that, but sorry when they eat at the dining table that is where I draw the line. A notice needs to say, dogs welcome, on the floor, not on the chairs when covered in mud and certainly not on eating surfaces. To add I love dogs and have always owned one who we loved, but he was a dog.

Despite the notices, I consider it and health and safety issue. My husband had a slice of sponge which looked dried to me, he said it was okay (to use of the word nice). We had a coffee each is small class mugs. Coffee not filled to the top but the froth over ran the mugs, spilling down the side and over the tray. It tasted okay but have had better. After a walk around Hay-on-Wye we fancied a coffee stop, we found what looked like a lovely little coffee shop, when you walk in it looks very charming and cute! That’s where the good points end! Once we decided what we were drinking I placed the order with a very sullen lady behind the till, no smile, no thank you just “your drinks will be at the end of the bar”. When the drinks were ready I went up to collect them, sat down and then had to get up again as there were no teaspoons with the tea. The atmosphere in there was like a library, no music playing and you felt like you couldn’t speak. We didn’t order food but it looks like when you do they bring it to your table without cutlery so you have to get up and collect that! After we had finished our drinks I went to the toilet, there was no hand soap and no paper towels! This could be a great place it’s just a shame that the staff in there seem to be so unhappy!

There are tables inside and outside and well behaved dogs are always welcome. There is plenty of variety in the menu and everything is freshly prepared. I have to mention that the team working here is really lovely. The decor is cosy and charming and there is plenty of room for larger families inside. Great stay, good location for motorbike rides from and back to the hotel. Just a shame the restaurant was closed till further notice, but it's not a huge issue as there are several other places to eat within walking distance.
