Unjustifiably expensive for a below par breakfast that took 55mins to come at a not particularly busy time. The service was quite rude, cold and unfriendly and the coffee was very bad. The decor is nice and it’s a nice place to sit but it’s not great.

Stood waiting to order from a dwindling menu. There was a notice to say that there hadn’t been a delivery. The ‘owner’ was in the kitchen complaining that she had no bread… no this no that. Service was incredibly slow and we watched the ‘owner’ stand at the serving hatch complaining that they had run out…… While anyone can run low on stock, there is a supermarket that could have been used to restock the essentials. Yes it’s more expensive but certainly better than lost custom. Standing in the hatchway complaining does not help the business.

Honestly couldn't fault it. Such a cute atmosphere - felt like we were in Europe somewhere. Fabulous food - we tried 3 mains between us. The pea and pesto falafel and salad was delicious!! As was the welsh dragon sausage and mash. And the staff/owners were delightful - getting us extra non spicy sausages and gravy for the kids. 5/5 without a doubt - left so satisfied and relaxed.

Flat white was closer to a milkshake than a coffee. Poor barista skills. Very disappointed!!! Reply to your comment: Yes, I did mention the coffee when it was brought to the table, but the waitress was happy to walk away. Perhaps some barista training wouldn’t go a miss, rather than getting upset when someone brings the poor quality coffee to your attention.

Ordered a minute steak, but the lump of gristle that arrived was raw in the middle and bleeding. Complained to the staff, who took it away only to return a few minutes later with the same "steak", now charred on the outside, but still raw and bleeding in the centre. The only time in recent memory that I have found restaurant food to be inedible. No refund offered.

Really overpriced. We ordered 2 spaghetti bolognaise, fishcakes, steak open sandwich, 2 soft drinks and a tea and coffee and paid £78.50. For what we had it was terrible. The only acceptable meal was the fishcakes. The spaghetti bolognaise (£18) was full of water on the plates and small portions. The steak open sandwich had 1 small slice of thin beef on it (£17). It took ages to come, and the spaghetti bolognaise x 2 arrived way after the other two items. Really poor. Almost £80 for lunch and most of us went home hungry. Would definitely not recommend.

Overpriced and poor quality. Very slow service with dished for four arriving at different times. Spag Bol at £19 per head was small and watery. ‘Steak’ sandwich (£18) had two wafer thin small slices on top. Meal for four (1 item each plus 1 drink) was almost £80. Definitely not recommended. Prices like this do not warrant what we received. I don’t mind waiting and paying high prices for quality. This was not sadly.

Credit to them all and to the chefs for a delicious lunch, I had the smoked haddock and mango kedgeree fish cake, served with a crisp tasty salad of fresh beetroot, one of the best coleslaws in my opinion, various leaves, grated carrot and red cabbage,a dish of rainbow delight. I was expecting a long wait for food as there was another large table that had ordered before we did, but I was very pleasantly surprised that our food (ham, egg, frites, fishcakes, soup, and beef sandwich) arrived fresh and delicious looking within what felt like 5 minutes. My partner and I have visited the Granery two years running each time we visit Hay. In our trip in 2023 we were blown away by their food and went back many times incredibly pleased with the quality of the food. However, in our most recent trip this was not the same. My partner had the beef open sandwich which was okay, but had far too much salad and veg compared to meat, to top this off my partner then fell very sick with food poisoning the following morning from this meal. We believe the salad, coleslaw and fermented carrots were out of date. We did message the granary on instagram but have still heard nothing back. It’s a real shame as this place was so fantastic last year!

The way you place your order was way too long, with a long que to the front door and around the place other diners come to get water. It may be that it is a way to let the kitchen keep up, but they should figure out another system. Also, when you place your order, the one member of staff then made the drinks before serving the next person, which, again, made the wait even longer. Food was also rather average for the relatively high price. Staff we really lovlely.

We were looking for a quick lunch and had visited this cafe/restaurant previously. The menu provides a wide range but the choice of snacks for those with a dairy allergy was quite limited, although non-dairy milk for tea/coffee was readily available. Requirements are ordered and paid for at the counter, with items requiring some preparation being delivered to the table when ready. The snacks and drinks represented very good value. The wonderful artisan sandwiches with generous salad garnish are off the menu. The cheapest items, if you want an actual meal, are soup or baked potatoes. Some of us ordered leek & potato soup whereas I picked sweet potato & ginger. It was all fresh and OK but nothing special (like things used to be) and there was a sizeable gap between each bowl arriving. The accompanying bread rolls seemed to have come from the supermarket. A while since we visited the Granary, we were regular visitors for many years our Sunday drive out and then lunch. So today, we decided to give it a try, well have to say disappointed! The food was o.k, maybe not quite what it was, miss the lovely self service soups, they had in the old days, but appreciate things change. However, my biggest complaint was the appearance of the place, yes appreciate it is a rustic granary, but not the toilet seat on the floor ! everywhere needs a good scrub and coat of paint. The final blow was when a party of 6 people sat close by us and continually allowed a dog to walk across the table to one another !! sorry but that is totally unacceptable, imagine the repercussions that could have for someone with allergies, babies etc. I complained to the waitress within ear shot and of course got some dirty looks ! I know we are a country who now seem obsessed with owning dogs, and they are now welcomed everywhere, yes quite happy with that, but sorry when they eat at the dining table that is where I draw the line. A notice needs to say, dogs welcome, on the floor, not on the chairs when covered in mud and certainly not on eating surfaces. To add I love dogs and have always owned one who we loved, but he was a dog.

After a walk around Hay-on-Wye we fancied a coffee stop, we found what looked like a lovely little coffee shop, when you walk in it looks very charming and cute! That’s where the good points end! Once we decided what we were drinking I placed the order with a very sullen lady behind the till, no smile, no thank you just “your drinks will be at the end of the bar”. When the drinks were ready I went up to collect them, sat down and then had to get up again as there were no teaspoons with the tea. The atmosphere in there was like a library, no music playing and you felt like you couldn’t speak. We didn’t order food but it looks like when you do they bring it to your table without cutlery so you have to get up and collect that! After we had finished our drinks I went to the toilet, there was no hand soap and no paper towels! This could be a great place it’s just a shame that the staff in there seem to be so unhappy!

Took the quarters of an hour to get a couple of croissants and a veggie breakfast, coffee (not quite hot enough) arrived first and was quickly finished while we waited for the food. Then the breakfast came (very nice), then one croissant arrived baked hard and the second arrived give minutes later. The place is a bit in need of a good clean and re-decorate, toilets were a bit grubby.

Had fishcakes with salad. Fishcakes were good but some of the flavours in the salad overpowered the fish & really didn't compliment the dish. A shame as I expected a more complete meal at the price

Great food. Fresh, tasty produce which shows in the eating. We recommend the open steak sandwich and the veggie falafel! Well worth a visit.

Very over priced for breakfast and the food was very average. Service was appalling. A smile goes a long way on hospitality. Would not recommend.

Generally good food, though goat's cheese salad price was overpriced.

Me and the partner popped over after visiting family! We had the starters a share meals. I MUST know how to make the nacho sharer! Incredible. The pint was also very much needed! Thank you 🙏 the staff were so helpful and patient for an indecisive gal like me! ❤️

Greg’s are having a problem with their sliding doors and someone is going to get hurt, all for a little oil on the runners. Just watched one person walk away. They will lose customers.

Great stay, good location for motorbike rides from and back to the hotel. Just a shame the restaurant was closed till further notice, but it's not a huge issue as there are several other places to eat within walking distance.

Surprised to read some of the reviews on here. Great little find on camper van app, we called and emailed and had positive replies. We stayed in our van on our travels in the carpark, great peaceful night with not a lot of lighting, had good Ale on tap (Doom Bar) and had a great steak and fish tea. Great service and friendly staff, it wasn’t too busy for a Saturday but in the current climate and its rural location isn’t this to be expected. We are planning another local walk in the new year and will be back

I go into Costa in newtown powys 3 or more times a week the staff is always jolly and happy and is extremely friendly they keep the place clean and tidy and the service is remarkably good. I am disabled and on a mobility scooter and all the staff goes out off there way to help me any way they can. But I have to say that I read a bad review and and was very annoyed with the comment made about it being unkept sometime they may have to in a queue when more people come in at the same time. But they serve them and if they are sitting in they sit and the staff will bring it to them and always apologise for the wait but you have to wait anywhere you go if they are busy at times. All I can say is to the staff is carry on with the great job you all are doing and keep smiling 😃
