Had breakfast here on a busy Thursday morning (just before mums group with 7! buggies). Excellent strong coffee and bacon rolls. Great friendly service

We stayed at Windlestraw for the last night of our summer roadtrip. It was amazing and the food of a level we were not expecting. It was a set menu, everyone gathered for canapes and pre-dinner drinks in the lovely garden room before going through to the elegant dining room. I failed at a task I usually much better at and only took a couple of photos as I was enjoying my meal too much but every course was presented as beautifully as the two I did remember to immortalise.

We were staying in the lovely Stables Cottage at Kailzie booked via Crabtree & Crabtree and so we headed to this cafe. In fact we very very happily ate there every day they were open during our 10 day stay and were always met with a warm welcome and a good fire and a ‘oh how to choose’ menu. The food was really great whether a roast Sunday lunch, a sandwich, an unusual vegetarian dish or a divine pudding, tray bake or tasty cake. The staff, front of house and the chef team too, really made our stay at Kailzie, with friendly but super efficient service, and an ideal balance of professionalism and fun. Would recommend our favourite dish but how to pick from milk pancakes, roast belly pork, bubble and squeak, Kailzie Mess, cinnamon swirls…. Many of the dishes have a twist or a bonus. definite favourite there is orange zest. But you’ll have to visit to find out what they do with it!

A relative that had been previously and who had enthused about it, that combined with a recommendation from local B&B owner and previous reviews we were expecting something exceptional, however we left feeling disappointed. We were advised to book yet were the only people in. The restaurant is very small but seemed very clean and bright. Staff were pleasant and attentive. We ordered 2 mains, a bhuna lamb and chicken tikka masala, one portion of mushroom pilau rice, 2 poppadoms and a peshwari naan, one large bottle, one small bottle of Cobra. The meal was served very quickly, almost too quickly. The rice was good but the strange thing about both main courses was although there was plenty of meat, there were no pieces of lamb or chicken bigger than a sugar lump. The sauce with the tikka tasted excessively sweet and the bhuna sauce had very little texture, it was almost pureed. The naan was over sweet and the colour of an orange hi-vis jacket, the mango chutney was an unusual deep red in colour. We dine out at Indian restaurants quite frequently and have never had meals served with such tiny pieces. The bill was just short of £60 which seemed excessive, the two beers alone came to over £12. The speed from ordering to the meals getting presented so quickly suggested maybe the sauces were pre-made rather than cooked to order. Would think twice about returning based on the high price.

Another gorgeous experience at the Garden Cafe. The food was divine as always and the portions for the money are quite substantial. We had quiche, salad, cake and coffee. All were fabulous and the staff are lovely and so accommodating.

Updated review: We had high expectations but our meal was somewhat spoilt by being given the wrong order. Two of our party ordered beef bourguignon pie but instead were given chicken balmoral pie, without being told!! We spoke to the waitress later who said she didnt know it hadn't been mentioned to us when we'd ordered and was sorry. Staff were nice but stretched on a busy Saturday evening and the manager was not able manage the restaurant as he was running the bar instead. The food was good, although pie portions were quite small. We had actually booked a table in the pub but luckily they'd a made a mistake with that too, as we.found the pub had a strong doggy smell when we left. The restaurant is very pleasant though. When we paid the manager asked if we'd enjoyed the evening and was told that 2 of our group were given the wrong food but again just a quick sorry and no offer of complimentary coffees or money off. Traquair Arms later contacted me after reading my review and sent a £25 voucher as an apology. It was a nice gesture and appreciated!

This hotel is awful. It looks nothing like the website pictures. The whole place is rundown and filthy. On our first morning the waiter said there was a mix up with the food order and he thought he had some rice krispies somewhere but we're still waiting for them to arrive. There was then a greasy cooked breakfast plonked on a plate. When new residents arrived they were given wet towels for their room and the owner was very intimidating when they complained. Next morning at breakfast they were given the same excuse as us about the lack of breakfast foodstuffs. Don't know how this place is still open. Avoid at all costs.

Popped in for brunch with my family and felt very rushed to order and not giving time to look at the menu. The young woman serving was over within minutes of us sitting down and looking at the menu to see if we were ready to order we said no not yet and she literally came back 30seconds later. I asked for a latte with oatmilk and was told they didn’t do oatmilk despite stating so on the menu,as well as having a latte with oatmilk here before, I was offered soya but just had cows milk instead. The latte itself wasn’t very warm. We also received half of our food order and before bringing the rest of the order served another table. The food itself was alright. We’ve been a few times and had better experiences
