I recently took my parents for lunch with my Toddler and I cannot fault the service we received. From the minute we stepped in we were made to feel welcome and our specific seating request was no trouble at all for them. Our table had steak ciabattas, which came recommended as medium rare but could be cooked to your liking, a ham and mushroom omelette and the Soup of the Day (Cream of Vegetable). My 3 year old enjoyed some delicious fish goujons and chips and I'm afraid to say we were all too full this time for any desserts. The choice and quality of food is excellent and we are very much looking forward to our next visit. Thanks again!

New Owners, New Menu and wow what a difference. 6 of us went along tonight (yes two households) and we were all blown away by the quality of the food and the service matched it in every way. Sunday Roast which came with all the trimming was just amazing whilst a couple got the Bugers (with haggis and mozzarella) which was fit for the biggest of eaters. Can’t fault the meal and I hope to return again very soon ! Thanks for a quality meal.

Stayed for a weekend in September this must be the worst hotel I've stayed in in recent times. room although September was called cold and totally uninviting wallpaper was peeling off the ceilings the bathroom was not clean with dirt in the corners of the shower area only good point the evening meal was good the food was tasty the only drawback was the limitation of what they had because although it was on the menu they had run out of various things and this was only 6:30 in the eveningsome of the alcohol choices they didn't have most of the wines they didn't have have so unfortunately a very poor selection of drinks however all fades into significance when you went for breakfast which was absolutely appalling no choice just a cup of tea planted down in front of you and then a English breakfast which actually wasn'thalf the ingredients that the gentleman told me would be on the breakfast plate werent there it was cold and greasy overall a very poor experience

The Clovenfords Country Inn Hotel is a very welcoming family run little gem, ideally suited as a base to explore The Borders or venture further into Scotland. The setting couldn't be more pleasant at the hub of the village of Clovenfords and routes to other locations including Galashiels, Peebles, Sterling, Montrose, Kelso, Edinburgh and beyond; quintessential to the village of Clovenfords and on bus routes easily connecting to these and other local towns, villages and places of interest. The countryside and landscape is seceded to none with the River Tweed running close by and accompanying you along the road to Peebles and ideal for fishing, walking, driving or just taking it. The Inn is comfortable, warm and inviting, serving great traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner with the best Sunday carvery anywhere! Nothing is too much trouble for Roy, Ross or the rest of the crew. Although the hub of the village, it is still quiet and tranquil with ample space to relax, the rooms are well appointed and the place is big enough without being sprawling to offer privacy but still maintain the feeling of being full of life. With a very accommodating large function room, ample car park, great pub and dog friendly too (not the function room) what more could you want? Superb value for money.

Start with the positive - lovely fresh sandwiches with a great selection of fillings. Plenty top ups of tea & coffee. Friendly staff. However despite the fact this had been pre booked the vegetarian option for sandwiches was cheese with various things such as tomatoes onions but all cheese! The vegan option was lettuce tomatoes & cucumber on what I presume was gluten free bread going by the texture. There were no cakes or scones for a vegan option - very disappointing in this day & age!. The cakes and scones for the non vegan did not appear home made. No cream for the scones - they said when asked "we don't normally do cream" to be fair they don't advertise cream scones. There was plenty food so you won't leave hungry but due to the lack of vegan we won't be back - different if we'd just turned up but as I said this was pre booked.

Fine overall experience. The Cloven is nice enough but our there wasn't much to the eating experience - it feels as if they are content to be a pub that just happens to do food, which is fair enough.I'd recommend if you want a quick easy bite to eat but not if you're after a fancier nice night.

There are however a few constructive criticisms. French frie Mcdonalds type chips are not great with what was a great piece of fish.Salad with a dressing should be replaced by garden or mushy peas....the salad was soggy under the hot fish .We weren't offered the carvery which we only knew about because the people next to us had it....not mentioned on the menu that I remember. We were late in and just found a table amongst the locals (good sign) and no harm done that some items we off the menu. What was also amazing was the massive chunk of cheesecake that was served up for dessert. I was on the espressos by then so not expecting to 'share' but had to. This was not a problem and the stir fry veg came in a small bowl as requested. Perfect. BUT they charged full price. No wrap no chips and no veg not even a large plate to wash. I am not sure how it would take any length of time as the cakes were all shop bought, and cheap varieties. They arrived on a cardboard cake stand similar to the ones Poundland sell, and we had to ask for jam tor the sorry excuse for HALF scones we received. The sandwiches were pleasant but squashed. I feel it was a wasted trip as we were squashed in a corner as if we were a burden.I would never go back and strongly recommend people look elsewhere if looking for a nice afternoon tea.

The good - the recent refurbishment has transformed the place. The decor, fit and finish are the best that this hotel has ever looked. The middle - the food on the whole was good. Salmon was great, but the menu is uninspiring and the battered fish was soggy and unloved. The bad - service leaves a lot to be desired. Firstly, we were not expected as the date of booking had been recorded incorrectly. But the real issue came later: Once we had finished the main course the table had not been cleared away some 20 minutes later, and we gave up hope of this happening and our opportunity to order dessert, so we left. Our displeasure was registered so hopefully will be taken as constructive criticism. As a Clovenfords resident, I sincerely hope they can resolve the service issues, and get their act together / gain experience and make this place the success it could once again be.I will certainly visit again, but will wait a while until the service beds down and hopefully becomes more established from a process point of view.

As it is local to us we went after the re-furbishment. The decor was fresh and the restaurant was looking good. However the staff members were decidedly unwelcoming as well as lacking in knowledge. I asked about the advertised "craft ciders" to be told " I don't know I'm not bar staff" Disappointingly, she didn't find out either!! The menu was uninteresting and banal. The only vegetarian choices were BORING pastas ( macaroni which I would make at home if I had nothing in the cupboards) or penne with mushrooms. So I opted for a starter - asking for main course size - which came as a starter size and was told " that's what we serve if you ask for it as your main course" My husband opted for the Fish and Chips thinking that was safe. OH NO! The chips were sold and white! The batter on the fish was crisp but soggy and wet inside! It was OBVIOUS that the food was ASSEMBLED not home cooked. We left most of the food on the plates, but NO ONE asked what was wrong! So NEVER AGAIN,

This historic Inn/hotel which should be a lovely local place is so soulless, even after redecoration. The bar IS much better, but the restaurant is like any other road side commercial multinational eatery. The food was really awful. Hard to believe there is even a cook let alone a chef. No flavour to anything the 4 of us had, everything was overlooked and bland and our friend's steak pie looked more like dog food than a tasty dish. He couldn't eat it. My husband's salmon was way over cooked, my duck was flavourless and tasted old and the potatoes were cold. We had hoped this update would give us a place for us to hang out, have a good meal and see neighbours and friends. Alas, there is only a minor cosmetic improvement. We will never go back unless we hear of a proper chef with a good reputation has been hired and totally revamped the menu.

I used to be very regular in this place until it unfortunately closed down for a while at the beginning of the year. After the reopening, I thought there were great things ahead for a place which could SO be a gold mine and a destination for food. The food was great, service above average for a country pub and the ambiance welcoming (even if it could have done with a coat of paint). This time however, it wasn't to be...The young man behind the bar (same person who took our order and brought our food) was friendly enough and appeared to know the menu quite well given the questions my partner asked and what we overheard the table next to us enquiring about however when we looked at the small menu and asked about specials we were told that there weren't any that night. This left us with a limited menu with which to choose from. (Note: I later overheard the gentleman behind the bar telling another customer that they have the full restaurant menu available Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday so maybe we were unlucky visiting when we did)The order was taken promptly and the food delivered in a good time but it became average from here on. The steak pie tasted as though it was 2 different batches (one being more cooked than the other) and the herb mash which came with it was just way too "herby" and a bit dry (although that might just be my opinion and others might like the "herbyness"). The burger was pretty well thought out although the ragout that came on it could have done with maybe a BBQ flavour or something other than plain ragout. Definitely give points for trying though and trying to get away from the boring norm.Overall, compared to how the place was 6-12 months ago, I was very disappointed but rumour has it that there will be a refurbishment happening sometime in the new year which wouldn't be bad if it's true and hopefully I'll be back when it's completed and give it another chance. This village needs a successful business like this and I can only hope that they can get it right, sooner rather than later!

The family and I went here last week for Sunday lunch. It was very nice, I had the roast beef which was cooked well, service was quick and the staff were all friendly. The music in the background was very depressing though which didn't help the overall atmosphere of the place. Everyone at the table enjoyed their main meals, however, the deserts weren't nice, i had a chocolate and rasberry compote the rasberries were very sour and the chocolate was rock solid. Toilets and the eating area were clean, and plenty parking available.

A disappointing Sunday lunch. Small selection on the menu ordered fish but told there was none left. Took a long time for the starters to arrive. Main courses were very small, turkey roast consisted of 2 very small pieces of turkey, 3 half potatoes, 1 teeny yorkshire pud and some veg, it did taste nice just not enough of it. Shame but will not back.

I ordered Chicken with pasta in a cream mushroom and tarragon sauce. I got a small amount of spagetti in a non-existant sauce with 1 small mushroom! The chicken was a whole chicken breast dumped on the top of the spagetti and it was dry and tough. My daughter had a burger which was "mushy " on top and she felt unwell afterwards. It wouldn't suprise me if I learnt that they didnt have a chef and that the waiter had cooked /warmed up the meal.It was the worst meal that I've had for a very long time.

We took our 2 grand kids here for lunch last Saturday.Overall it was okay, could do with a child's portion to be made available from the mains and for the children's menu to be on the table rather than having to ask if there is one. However on the plus side we all enjoyed our meals all well cooked and very tasty. One thing the pea puree that comes with the fish and chips is neither one thing or the other.Ditch it for real mushy peas.Oh yes and lovely hand cut chips.

We booked for a Saturday night having an early start the following day for a cycle event at Peebles. There was a wedding on in the Hotel, meaning that the kitchen was unable to offer evening meals to its residents; the wedding was very noisy as it wound up in the wee small hours; we left too early for the hotel to be able to provide breakfast, other than a multipack box of cereal and a flask of cold milk in the room. As I say, this didn't meet our needs!

Have visited a few times since the hotel changed hands and the meals have been lovely, however the most recent visit was slightly different. The menu had gone and been replaced by a very simple and basic alternative. Food was lukewarm, cold plates, and just generally ok, nothing like previous visits where food was fresh, hot and tasty. Our sticky toffee puddings, which were ordered as are usually nice looked like they were out of a tin with distinct lack of toffee sauce! Have to give the waiter a mention as he was very nice, but won't be back which is such a shame.

We enjoyed our food here. We both had the steak burger which was delicious. We sat through in the bar as the restaurant had just closed as we arrived, it was a little noisy. I would recommend getting here early if you want to dine in the restaurant, from the website it looked like the views were nicer and there was a bit more room to eat at the table. We did wait about 30 minutes but the barman told us this before we ordered our food so we didn't mind. We had great service too, the tables could've done with a wipe as the one we sat at was a bit sticky so our plates, glasses and cutlery kept getting stuck.

Deciding where to eat en route home from visiting family one Sunday was decided for my partner and I by my car breaking down! Knowing the hotel was there I managed to keep my car going till I got into the carpark. After having a look at it then calling breakdown we went in for food. When entering we were asked how the car was and if there was anything they could do, as staff had seen us inspecting the engine. This I found very kind of them! We were then asked if we wanted to eat next to the roaring fire in the bar as the restaurant was full of children.which isn't a bad thing but considering we were tired and awaiting a phonecall was a sensible decision. We then ordered the Haggis bon bons followed by the roast beef dinner. Each was beautiful. The Haggis had the right amount of crisp to the batter and was perfect starter size. The roast beef was cooked perfectly as were the sides. The waiter was very tentative, service was quick and the atmospheres was that of a cozy local pub. Could not have asked for a better place to break down. I just want to thank the staff for their hospitality and concern they showed us. Your all a credit to the village!

Went out for a meal tonight at the clovenford hotel after being seated at table waiter walked away to seat other party and never returned. He then proceeded to get drinks order from that party then taking them to table still not acknowledging us. To his defense he was the only waiter and was clearly run off his feet. After 20 mins of waiting for drinks i questioned waiter and asked for drinks however he was still serving other table, waited another 5 mins with no luck and walked out. Also the pub did not take card and very poor choices on menu. Most disappointed in service i live local and was really hoping this was going to be a place i could eat at regularly

Have visited the clovenfords inn twice for Sunday lunch now and both times food and service have been excellent. The carvery is super value at 9.95 for adults and 6.95 for children, you can visit twice and have as much as you like of everything both times. Lovely selection of roast meats and fresh veggies, none of which are dry or overlooked, they bring out wee bits at a time so food is not sitting under heat lamps for ages. Also really nice service, quite laid backed atmosphere and not a problem to take small children. Would recommend for families and those who love a good Sunday dinner.

On Monday 18th March when passing through the village my wife and I stopped for lunch,(bad idea).I ordered still water when it came it was like tap water,(no sign of bottle) for £1.50. Next had soup of the day (Mushroom and Tarragon) which was split I think the chef should have noticed. Then finally had the Steak Burger which was very dry and quite disgusting, disguised with two large onion rings, with a dollop of Tomato Sauce (I would have thought it should have been relish).and cheap Farm Food chips, packet salad, good profit maker at £10.95.My wife had Haddock which she said was alright, except for the chips. I did not complain at the time as I was quite angry, but I think the server (Tracey) could see what was left on the plate, I think I know when talking about this as I was in the trade for 45 years before retiring.

Had been meaning to visit the Clovenfords for some time after hearing good reviews. Definitely not disappointed! There was a good choice on the menu. We had starters of the soup, which was really good, and spinach and ricotta fill tart, which I'm told was also good.Mains of steak, risotto and chicken all excellent. The chicken breast was very large. All cooked very well. Kids choices are homemade and fresh, or you can order small portions of adult mains.Sweets were really good and the cheeseboard was excellent.Good choice of relatively inexpensive wine. Also, there is a selection of real ales, well kept.Staff are really nice. Will definitely be back.

I stopped by chance at the Clovenfords on a day where all B&B and Hotels of the area were fully booked due to a national bycicle convention. Quite depressed and ready to spend my first night in Scotland in my car, as a true Italian I said.. let's have dinner at least! The food I ate at the Clovernfords was good and the atmosphere very intimate but the kindness of Dawn was over the top. By chance I told her I was having a hard time in finding a place to sleep and she started phoning .. until she found a b&b in Galashiels with a room available. I appreciate the people who are nice and kind to the clients but Dawn went the extra mile and I cannot say but a big THANK YOU.

Went for a family meal at the weekend, place was quiet, so no excuses for staff being “very busy”. Food was dreadful, staff were rude, prices exorbitant. The first member of staff seemed to take great offense when we asked for a few more minutes to look at the menu and his attitude was appalling from that moment onward.I received a bizarrely presented “steak” burger, with a steak knife, unceremoniously bludgeoned through the meat burger and bun. I can only guess this unusual presentation was meant ironically, as the burger consisted of dry minced meat that crumbled and fell apart as soon as it was approached.Other family members endured, rather than enjoyed, their tasteless, bland meals. When we complained to a second member of staff she seemed uninterested and offered no apologies, sauce or seasoning nor an exchange for a different item from the menu. There are plenty of nice places to eat in nearby Selkirk or Galashiels, spend a few more minutes in your car and avoid this the Clovenfords Inn!

I have visited on several occasions for lunch with friends - the sort of ladies lunch that turns into three courses, several coffees and leaving as they set up for dinner! We have always been made very welcome by the lovely staff members and have enjoyed every dish we have tried. The gammon steak has a gorgeous chargrilled flavour, the haddock is fresh with a lovely crispy batter and delightful homemade tartare sauce and the daily specials are always inventive and delicious. This is a country Inn in the best of tradition; warm, welcoming with good, home cooking. The meat was fine but the veg was limited, you weren't given a choice, spuds, a single yorkshire pudding, suede and carrots. The gravy was also salty. At previous carverys I've been to you got to add your own veg etc. This hotel probably isn't busy enough to allow this.....
