Booked 2 nights stay at this hotel for my partners birthday treat so we could explore the surrounding area. Arrived around 5pm after a long drive and was pleasantly surprised by how big the place was and how nice it looked at night, with the outside lights/veranda lit up. As soon as we got inside, the service and welcome that we received was lovely. After a quick tour of the room we headed downstairs for dinner, where again the service was great and the food was surprising for such a small hotel - it was amazing. Add to this that the chef quickly came out with homemade fresh out of the oven bread rolls....the smell was brilliant. The guy that looked after the front of house/served us breakfast was very good and very professional. Overall, our stay exceeded expectations and to top it off, it was dog friendly and had a lovely wee kids park in the garden. The only negative for me is that the bathroom radiator didn't work, so it was a little chilly - but things break, and I won't hold it against the hotel as these things happen and everything else in our room was lovely. Will return next year
Meant to leave a review after our first visit last week — but after going again today, I remembered!
First off…
BOOK a table before you go — it gets really busy (and you’ll soon see why).
Food
I don’t use this word lightly… the food we’ve tried is EXCEPTIONAL.
The "Big Yin" and "Wee Yin" all-day breakfasts are easily among the best I’ve ever had.
✅ A menu with enough variety to give you choice without overloading you
✅ They cater for dietary intolerances too, which is a big plus
✅ Local produce, served piping hot (yes, even the beans!)
✅ Beautifully plated and the meat is absolutely top-notch
They also offer pancakes, toasties, soups, and other options — and smaller portions if you prefer a lighter bite.
Drinks
We’ve only sampled the hot drinks so far, but the tea, coffee, latte and cappuccino were all spot on — both taste and presentation.
They use Myrtle Coffee beans, so you’re supporting a local supplier while getting a quality brew.
✅ They also offer milk alternatives for anyone with dietary needs.
Atmosphere
A relaxed, welcoming wee Scottish cafe — calm decor, friendly vibes, and a cake and scone display that’s downright dangerous if you’ve got a sweet tooth.
It’s also very family-friendly, which is always good to know.
Service
The staff are friendly, welcoming, and clearly proud of the place — they genuinely care about the food, the atmosphere, and the customers, which is a refreshing change.
Pricing
It’s definitely at the higher end, but given the location, quality, and service, it’s more than justified.
Parking
Plenty of street parking just a short 2-3 minute walk away, so no hassle there.
Overall
We’ve only been a couple of times, and it’s a 30-minute drive for us — but Heaven Scent has already gone straight in at #1 on our list of cafes.
Highly recommend you try it too!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
10 out of 10 for atmosphere, food , service and value for money.
One of the best meals ever.
So many beautiful dishes on the menu. Will definitely be back and highly recommend
A fantastic meal and very friendly people, I cannot believe the review about the unfriendly and rude staff, I was present at the time, they were turned away because the wanted take the own food into the restaurant to eat, I don’t know of any restaurant that would allow people to take in their own food, I wold definitely recommend the restaurant and the food
A great friendly place stayed there this week .bedroom lovely .resturant and bar very cosy and friendly.food delicious. Definitely recommend. Very quaint
Decided to return to this cafe, only to discover it is no longer a cafe by any stretch of the imagination. The choice is soup or a cake and that is it. It used to do lovely meals and have great staff, now it is just a shell of what it once was. Did not stay as only a poor choice of soup and that didn't attract us. Departed without purchasing anything as they clearly don't want customers anymore.
Went here both to see the water I’ll which was not working today because the water level was too low. It was possible to see the three floors of the mill and talk to a miller about the grinding process and history of the mill.
Whilst there we went to the cafe which was very busy, we did get the last 2 seats. We had coffee and scone. The coffee was hot and tasty, the scones, one cheese which was great and a fruit one which came with home made jam, were both fresh and tasty.
We saw the soups and other meals being eaten and it all to be good home cooking.
Booked a table for two people, turned out was a very small table at a door opening onto the road , steady flow of customers meant continual icy blasts.
Waited approximately 20 mins for the order to be taken and the a further 25 mins before the food arrived.
Steak pie with chips and veg was very good , served on very large plates meaning no face to face dining.
Decided not to have dessert due to the wait time, the draughtiness, the dog barking and the baby crying ( bad day when the baby was taken out and the dog stayed ) as well as a two hour limit on the table.
Payment was at the bar achievable after ploughing through the masses. Seemed to be only 2 staff serving .
Overall really nice food at a fair price served in unfortunately a very noisy environment with ridiculous wait times.
Don’t understand this dogs being allowed in food establishments fad, leave them at home where they’re not getting trampled on and give the rest us a break from barking and all other things that go with them.
Visited with family and were warmly welcomed. Friendly staff and tasty food. Their Tuesday deal on pizza and pasta made an excellent meal very affordable. Lovely pizzas all round!!
Being really picky on food I saw the fish chowder advertised but hesitated ...if it's not done well it can be horrible.
OMG this luscious chowder arrived creamy perfection with great chunks of fish and some asparagus spears as extra through it.
The taste consistency and presentation were sublime ....wayyyyy above my expectations.
Just returned after a one night stay. Amazing. The hotel was very nice, clean, quiet and comfortable. Breakfast was great and loads of choices.
The highlight for us all was Karen, the Manager. She had us in stitches throughout. What an amazing lady.
Would return there in a heartbeat.
Superb food - couldn’t fault - if rather expensive! However, only one available red wine by the glass - apparently hotel closing for season - so this was the reason - never heard of this before? Is the establishment under new management - be interested to know as returning customer - to be honest not much of an experience as used to be when host was friendly, welcoming and really good service - current one is not !!! Unfortunately will not be returning - better options in the highlands.
