This place has recently changed hands and the new owners are also in business marketing wine particularly from South Africa. Our visit were was principally to collect a couple of cases of wine that we had ordered, but whilst we were here as part of our Wells mini break, we decided to have brunch having not breakfasted.
Parking is not easy here, the custom seems to be to draw-up right outside on the main road, and park on part of the pavement. There is a car park opposite and to the left about 100 metres away.
This café/shop serves the village of Chewton Mendip and, judging by the clientele we saw there, it is well supported by local residents.
There appears to be different menus available depending on the day of the week and the time of the day. When we visited the breakfast menu was still in operation and we chose the standard breakfast rather than the larger version. We had 2 rashers of good bacon, a great sausage, a hash brown (which was a tad oily), a well-cooked fried egg, a small (but sufficient) serving of baked beans and a slice of toast made from supermarket bread. At £7.95 this represented excellent value as it was all cooked to order. It was much-enjoyed and made the better because of the sachet of HP Sauce available in the sauces selection.
We also bought some good scented candles and had a good peruse of other ‘fancy good/gifts’ and the wine on sale, but in the latter we were seeing if there were some South African wine that we hadn’t tasted from our connection with the wine cellar mentioned earlier.
The lady serving was very pleasant and helpful, and we enjoyed our time here.
Never had a bad bite, let alone meal from this joint. Delivery times spot on, food second to none. I’ve been to China many times and never had Chinese this good
This pub is a gastropub. Really good old English atmosphere. Good food. We were expecting an enjoyable evening. We didn’t have one. I ordered a meal from the kitchen. My guest is vegetarian. There was only one vegetarian dish on the menu which he didn’t want so he chose a pizza. We were told that the pizzas were made in a different kitchen and that it probably wouldnt arrive at the same time as mine. We assumed a delay of about 5 to 10 minutes. My meal arrived about twenty minutes after we had sat down. My meal was good. My guest’s meal arrived 45 minutes after we arrived and well after I had finished eating mine. It was embarrassing sitting with my guest waiting with him for his meal to arrive. We spoke with staff several times. They were apologetic but the pizza still took some time to arrive at the table after we had alerted them to the problem. We were told that our pizza hadn’t been forgotten but that a large takeaway order had caused the delay. We eventually asked for the pizza to be boxed up as a takeaway and left the pub when it arrived. The management didn’t charge us for the pizza and didn’t charge us service charge but the experience they had managed to provide us was not good.
Disappointed a lot of the chocolate on sale had gone white and the sales assistant was still trying to sell some to me at an exorbitant price! Unfortunately one box of faded chocolate in the sun I ended up buying by mistake tasted horrible.
Sort your stock out please and either reduce or remove from the shelves!!!
Not impressed
Good chippy with good food and excellent staff. Good frindly staff made really pleasnat food. We ate in. Basic tables , chairs etc but comfortable enough for a fish supper. The veggie burger was OK. as was the piece of freshly fried cod.. Worth a go.
Though the food was good, the employees were not. They could barely be bothered, and their behavior made a poor impression on the whole experience. We traveled from Virginia, USA and it was the only restaurant we were not happy with during our entire 3-week trip.
We stop here for lunch the staff were friendly and welcoming the food was lovely although a little pricey 9,50-£10 for sandwiches and smallportion of fries £5
