We enjoyed our visit here for an afternoon tea and scones. Then we browsed the plants for sale, the greenhouses, and strolled the rambling garden. While not an elegant restaurant with waiters, table service, and delicious entrees, it IS a lovely garden cafe with comfortable outdoor seating in a tranquil setting. Visit with that expectation, and you will enjoy yourselves. We did.

Me and my partner popped in for lunch one Friday. Absolutely amazing! The food was to die for (best steaks we’ve tasted). Service was superb and friendly from start to finish. We felt so welcome the moment we walked through the door. Highly recommended and will be returning again! Thank you

Enjoyed a fabulous tapas dinner with three friends last night at the Vobster Inn prepared by a genuine Spanish chef. We shared ten different dishes from pheasant croquettes to Manchego and quince jelly. Why would you choose burger and chips when you can have a meal that you would never attempt at home.

Arrived in Mells for first time and spotted cafe which we entered immediately after a lengthy journey. Cafe was due to close in 15 minutes so we placed our order with the young assistants. However the owner came in from the post office and rudely instructed us and his assistants that we would have to have a take away due to it closing. We still had 15 minutes! So we went outside on a cold day to drink our coffee. Another group of people arrived shortly after and managed to get served without the boss knowing. They also came outside. The boss returned looked outside and stared at me like daggers as though it was all my fault his closing time might be slightly delayed. I didn’t respond. He then went back next door grabbed the doormat and started beating it vehemently against the wall of the shop with dust flying everywhere. Not a good first impression of Wells!

We were guests of our dear friends, Sarah and James, who are members of Soho House. As we entered, there were tomahawk steaks and large other meats on the counter (enticing!). The menu had huge variety and the vegetarian and light options were just fine. In the end, the whole group of 7 of us opted for steaks, either the tomahawk (for sharing) or the sirloin for the odd one out. Good choice of booze and bar staff who knew their drinks. It had to be said that a few items were "dropped" from our order, but this was swiftly put right by Soho staff. All-in, a very good evening. Hope to be invited back again.

I think due to a lack of organisation or just chaos in the pub it took over 1 hour 15 minutes for our food to arrive. It was terrible weather and whether they were inundated with customers or had no booking system I do not know but we will not return. If we had better service we would have stayed for a desert and coffees so they lost out. We were a group of 9 friends who once a month go out for a Sunday lunch, not always a roast but it is difficult to find a pub that dose anything else these days. We booked for 12.30pm and there was a table with our name on it. We were all prompt and by the time we found out what the ordering system was and the choices it was about 12.45pm when we ordered, there was nothing written up anywhere with the choices available. I was told the available roasts were either beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey and nut roast. Also, I was told there was a normal size and a child size but if we asked, they could do a small size. We could see that the normal size was too big for most of us as the Yorkshire pudding served was the size of a plate with all roasts. Someone went up to the bar to order the food for all 9 of us as there was no table service. We asked what was happening after waiting for 45 minutes to be told it would be another 15 minutes. Well, it arrived at exactly 2.00pm after waiting 1 hour 15 minutes. We did not get what we ordered as we were one beef short and were then told there was no turkey as they only serve it in December, although they took the order, and so they brought a pork for that person. We then had to ask for the sauces like mint, horseradish and apple which they had not provided and there were no spoons to serve them with when they arrived. So, the food finally arrived and it was quite good quality although cold except for two people’s plates who had hot roast potatoes but they were hard as not properly cooked. What a shame the service let down the whole meal although there seemed to be enough staff to cope. We were sat right next to the kitchen exit and the servers were coming out with one item at a time. I wondered if the kitchen was small making it difficult to deal with the rush but when I looked in caught a female cutting a very large Yorkshire pudding in half with scissors in her hands. When I arrived at the front door of the pub, I noticed how dirty the white door was and thought to myself is this a sign for the lunch to come. I should have walked straight back out.

This was the destination pub an upmarket eaterie .Before COVID we used to go 2-3 times a month. Food was classic but inventive and staff were experienced and knowledgeable. Over the last few years we’ve been a couple of times and have been disappointed with the food. We tried it again for Valentines Night and will never go again. The menu was so boring. The food was overpriced inadequate and under seasoned . The Talbot must be one of the loveliest pubs in the South West of England it’s such a shame. Decidedly gone downmarket.
