Came here for lunch with family venue was nice for a countryside pub. The menu was very limited and did not offer many pub classics. We all felt it was very over priced for standard food. The portions were fairly big, several of us had scampi which was very dry and batter was too thick. The thing that made us chuckle the most was it states on the menu they charge a 12.5% service charge to ensure staff earn a fair wage. If you want your staff to earn a fair wage then pay them it rather than relying on customers. The waitress did not bother to come over and ask how food was.

We stayed 2 nights for a wedding in the village and loved every single minute. The rooms were so charming and beautiful with lovely attention to detail. All the staff were very accommodating and friendly and the breakfast was perfect. We would love to stay again but will definitely be booking Sunday lunch soon!

Took my friends visiting from Glasgow to Mells to show it off and then went in to have a coffee. It was my first visit so it was an experience for me too. It is lovely just like an old country inn should be! The weather was fabulous so we sat in the courtyard, there were plenty of different seating areas inside and out, and all dog friendly. We then decided to have lunch too, my friend and I had the moules and her hubby had the Ploughmans. We were all impressed, it was all delicious. Even though they were setting up for a private evening event, the staff were all friendly, helpful and attentive as we were offered a fingerbowl without asking as moules are a bit messy! My first visit won't be my last, it is a bit pricey (watch out for the automatic 12.5% service charge), but worth it.

Dinner last night with the family. It was a disaster. They had booked too many tables with a big party on too. I booked a table at 6pm we were there by 615pm due to traffic and ordered starters almost immediately. We did not get main courses until 810pm and we had two seven year olds with us. Not going there again. Food was passable. Service shocking.

Great restaurant in a lovely location. Right from the initial phone booking through to the welcome, service and departure everyone was friendly and accommodating. The menu had a good range of choices catering for most tastes. I would highly recommended the Talbot as a venue for a meal and a walk around the village of Mells, especially the adjacent church.

Stayed here for a night recently and loved the quaintness of it . Our room was upstairs which could be an issue for elderly folk. It’s an old inn and the floor reflects that. Once inside there was plenty of space with a nice bath ,a rain shower and excellent products. Only downside was the sleep quality . The big pluses were the super staff and the food . We had lunch , dinner and breakfast and I could not fault any of them. The option of a Bloody Mary pick me up with your full English was a lovely touch .!! All in all The Talbot was superb. It’s not cheap by any means but gets a big thumbs up 👍

The staff were very accommodating , cheerful and efficient. We didn't stay overnight, so we couldn't comment on the rooms there. The location is chocolate box setting , beautiful. Despite living in Bath for nearly 2 years now, we've yet to sample a Beckford venue. Haven't had a Sunday roast for ages, so I was relishing this. Was hungry on arrival. The place is lovely, in a very picturesque area, though the site of a bar 50% covered in empty, dirty glasses was not a good sign. The staff were pleasant and plentiful but somewhat disorganised, The celeriac soup was very light and delicate. So light, it didn't really taste of celeriac very much. The beef, which arrived after quite a wait (it was packed) was a sad affair. I would have expected a supposedly classy joint like this to cook it at least pink, if not rare. Nope - as brown as boot polish. A miserable little array of poor, overcooked vegetables accompanied. The Yorkshire was at least chewy not crispy. 2 thin slices of sirloin was not exactly generous. I'd say £21 is a fair price for a roast in a pub, but I expect considerably better than average food. There was nothing to differentiate this from pub roasts £5 cheaper all over the place, other than probably, portion size. My partner had the nut roast and said it was "nothing to write home about". Doesn't get me fired up about either Bottle Shop nor Canteen, despite being 5 mins walk away.

Three of us decided to go for dinner on a Thursday night and my friend suggested the Talbot. I wish I had taken photographs to add to the review because the place is absolutely stunning so tastefully decorated, without being pretentious. We ate the perfect slow cooked beef with delicious mashed potatoes and vegetables, and we shared a pudding which was wonderful. Our young waiter was chatty and friendly, knowledgeable and approachable and best of all our little dog was welcome.

From the first contact, Daniel and the staff at the Talbot were attentive, polite, courteous and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The bedrooms were amazing. I’d booked five rooms for us and our friends, of course bagging the best one for us. The bedrooms did not disappoint...room 1 had a super king bed which was so comfortable. The beautiful decor and an amazing bath in the bedroom felt very luxurious. Our friends were equally impressed by their rooms and from my perspective each room gave great value for money. Our guests had arrived early to decorate the dining room. The table for 10 was comfortable and the room was perfect for a group of this size. The room had comfortable sofas at one end to relax in after supper. The room had its own music system and we were able to control the volume...to some extent as we saw fit.We were able to bring our own prosecco and wine, for a reasonable corkage charge. Daniel put our wine in the cellar the day before as arranged and ensured the white was cold in ice buckets and the red was the perfect temperature prior to serving. He also remembered to bring out the dessert wines which I had completely forgotten about. Daniel had organised a bucket of beers and cider for the non-prosecco drinkers at the start of the night, which the lads appreciated and made short work of.The food was stunning. We had canapés with our pre-dinner drinks. I was happy to let David, the chef, use his creativity and we weren’t disappointed with beautiful mint, pea and feta cheese bruschetta, steak tartar bites and chicken wings, we were in hog heaven! For the starter we enjoyed fish and meat sharing boards which I had pre-booked. These were incredible. Our guests chose from the a la carte menu for their main courses and desserts and each person said how wonderful the food was.We had an amazing night, one we’ll never forget. We got together as a group for breakfast and were treated to a varied an interesting menu. One member of the group had pancakes and chocolate sauce, others had perfectly cooked poached eggs and avocado on toast with chilli flakes, whilst others had more tradition eggs Benedict or full English. The Bloody Mary drinks helped soothe our slightly tender heads. They even had ibuprofen for those really suffering.I can honestly say the Talbot pulled out all of the stops and would have no hesitation in recommending a stay or a dinner party here!

We have been several times in the last year or so and enjoyed super food including a very nice Sunday lunch with friends on every occasion . This Sunday however , was very dissapointing - especially since we had told our guests just how good the food would be .1st course was blue cheese fritters with poached pear and candied walnuts for everyone and it was excellent , my wife had a whole grilled sole which she said was nice but the rest of the party of 5 had roast chicken, beef , pork or nut roast dinners and frankly it was very poor .All agreed the potatoes where undercooked and dry the " cauliflower cheese " a single floret with a damp smudge of bechamel and no detectable cheese , one baton of soggy carrot and some kale . I had told my friend that on our last visit we had half a chicken and it was delicious, was presented with a scrawny drumstick and a bit thigh meat which would have not filled a toddler. The pork was similarly miniscule, my beef was adequately sized ,rare as requested and tender but utterly tasteless. If we had been at a grotty carvery pub it would have been disappointing but we paid around £17 per plate for this ! Simply not excusable Talbot and shame on you for taking your eye of the ball you used to be special
