Arrived in Mells for first time and spotted cafe which we entered immediately after a lengthy journey. Cafe was due to close in 15 minutes so we placed our order with the young assistants. However the owner came in from the post office and rudely instructed us and his assistants that we would have to have a take away due to it closing. We still had 15 minutes! So we went outside on a cold day to drink our coffee. Another group of people arrived shortly after and managed to get served without the boss knowing. They also came outside. The boss returned looked outside and stared at me like daggers as though it was all my fault his closing time might be slightly delayed. I didn’t respond. He then went back next door grabbed the doormat and started beating it vehemently against the wall of the shop with dust flying everywhere. Not a good first impression of Wells!

Friendly little community cafe/shop/post office. Had a more than decent cappuccino and the pork and apple sausage roll was way better than most. Sunny day so chose to sit at a table on the small front terrace. Definitely made a good choice for a mid day snack.

Bread was really dry, it was £17.99 for two sandwiches and 2 apple juices, I wondered why it was empty in the summer holidays and now I see why. Zero atmosphere, I asked the lady behind the counter for a menu and she just pointed at this ripped piece of paper…. I was thinking okay then. We were going to stay for coffee and cake but decided not to! Wish we’d gone to the pub instead !

Enjoyed coffee and cakes here following a walk in the village. There is a varied selection of cakes and cookies as well as hearty sandwiches, scotch eggs and locally-made sausage rolls. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the cafe has a cozy feel. We will definitely visit again to try the other delicious foods on the menu.

Cafe is small but well stocked. Used to cycle here regularly but do often find ourselves going to the Walled Garden (when in opening months) as can be unreliable opening times here. Used to have no issue placing bikes over the wall to keep them off the road, the staff literally watched us do it and when we walked in then told us meaning we had to move them again; they really need some safe bike parking. Nice coffee and cakes. Cafe does look tired and needs a good freshen up. Sad they stopped the loyalty card as well as was a good incentive to come.

My husband and I had a much needed moment of calm here with our one month old baby. We sat outside on the sweet little terrace and were served a delicious lunch. The staff were kind and attentive and the whole atmosphere radiated peace and comfort. I now have it as a regular pause on my walks with my daughter through the village and I can never resist their flapjacks!

This was a terrible experience.I think we visited the same time as other reviewers as we arrived to be met with a hostile environment by the staff serving. The cafe looked messy and the back area and walls were dirty and unpleasant. If this is were they prepare food it really needs a tidy up. The staff acted like they couldn’t be bothered. To make matters worse we were charged £17 for 2 coffees and 2 small cakes.Think they made a mistake here but we had such an unpleasant experience I couldn’t be bothered going back in. Long gone are the days when Jo ran a tight ship and you were greeted with a smile and immaculate service.

So disappointing. Our usual spot at the Walled Garden was closed, so we took the opportunity to try this place. Set in a really pretty spot we were excited to enjoy a bit of lunch and coffee. Arrived to staff arguing with each other. And then no effort to be friendly or welcoming- in fact felt like there was more effort into being rude. The food was average and a sandwich served with salad and crisps £6.50 was actually a sandwich with double crisps as there was no salad. This was plonked on the table and we were just given the explanation of double crisps with no offer of an alternative or chance to change our mind. Coffee tasted good when it finally got to us. Staff then continued to be rude to each other, making our visit awkward. Post office staff was just as unhelpful and unfriendly. Will not return.

I can honestly say I’ve never visited a cafe that has so much sickness that it has to close or it has to close early regularly. I must just be unlucky as every time I plan a visit it either has closed early or is closed up completely due to sickness. Have given up now and will arrange to meet friends somewhere else.

Lovely little local village cafe which we've been visiting for a few years now mainly via riding our bikes along the cycle path. Charlie is always very friendly and easy to talk to, the selection of cakes on offer are delicious and prices are reasonable for what you get. The cafe is looking tired and the website is very out of date but that doesn't take away from the service.

Walked all the way to Mells looking forward to breakfast in the cafe. Web site promises a selection of breakfast fare e.g. bacon baguettes or rolls and other breakfast favourites. When we got there we found that nothing of the sort was on offer just croissants or tea cakes. Had to settle for an Americano which turned out to be weak and tasteless. We went there expecting a good breakfast because of all the positive comments on the web site and trip advisor. Suffice to say we will not be visiting again. Very disappointed - the very misleading web site should be updated.

First and last visit to this cafe. Called in at 2.45pm for a drink and some cake. Started talking to a female assistant. I asked for a piece of cake and a coffee. Only to be greeted by "Sorry, last orders were at 2.45pm" I looked at my watch and the time was 2.45pm. Two pints, why have the door open at 2.45pm to let customers in, if clearly customers are a hindrance. Second, why let the customer order first, when clearly there was no intention to provide a service. I thought that closing time was at 3pm. Is really that difficult to serve a cake/coffee in 15 mins. shocking service. Give this place a wide berth.

We stopped here for lunch on a fabulous circular walk recommended by Nigel Vile (Vilewalks). We parked at Great Elm, walked for an hour and a half, taking in beautiful views. We stopped at the Mells Cafe for lunch. We both had quiche and salads which was all homemade, delicious and less than £6 each which was very good value, and sat outside in the sunshine. What a treat in February! We then walked another hour along the Mells River padding derelict ironworks and beautiful snowdrops back to Great Elm. Terrain was a little muddy in places but I would say manageable for most (not pushchairs or wheelchairs though)

Staffed largely by volunteers, this shop, PO and cafe is a wonderful rural success story. Since buying a 'second home' in a neighbouring village two years ago, we have been utterly captivated by the friendliness and quality of this superb and very welcome local resource.A commercially run Spar outlet in another local village demonstrates with its poor stock and even poorer service just how good the Mells shop and cafe really is.If occasionally the service is a little slow because the latest volunteer hasn't quite mastered contactless payment, so what. It's an opportunity to browse some more, look at the local 'for sale' board or engage someone in conversation about the weather....Absolutely wonderful set-up. We visited here yesterday for my sisters birthday. I had called the previous day to book a table for six of us.When we arrived we walked in and were completely ignored by the two members of staff behind the counter, we had not been acknowledged at all !! I noticed a reserved sign on one of the tables and had to ask if that was for us. The experience did improve slightly when we decided what we wanted to eat and drink. Three of us had hot chocolates and two mochas, which were lovely, one of us had a cold drink. The choice of hot food was quite limited. We all decided to have the same, the fish pie which was served with a selection of salads. Mine was really nice, but a few of us found the fish pie not hot enough. We were offered water with our meal. There was no one else in the cafe when we first arrived, more people did arrive over the time of our stay, both for take away and to sit in. Considering they had no other customers when we first arrived, the service was very slow and we found the customer service very poor., if non existent !!One plus point was the food was very reasonably priced and the cafe very clean.Even when I went to pay, it was me having to make conversation. Overall this was a very disappointing experience and we will not be rushing back any time soon !!

Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere. The food was fresh and well presented.. A welcome break on our journey. loved the basket of knitting needles and wool which one was encouraged to do a row or two while waiting for food.

Stopped by this lovely little cafe on the way to Cheddar Gorge. It really is a superb venture by the local community and they can feel very proud! We had a bacon roll, scrambled eggs on toast, cup of tea and a hot chocolate. Couldn't fault any of it. Absolutely delicious! Would highly recommend visiting here if you're in the local area

Another outstanding meal. Exceptional food, attentive and friendly service, beautifully and tastefully refurbished pub retaining all of its authentic appeal, and brilliant value for money. Absolutely nothing to fault. It's utterly insane that a place can be this successful and busy and also financially unviable. So sad to hear that the tenants are having to leave when they've done everything perfectly. Impossible to imagine the brewery finding a tenant who can do anything better, so it just feels like they want the pub to fail.

Good afternoon , just want to give some feedback to our disappointing visit to Passeys today . We booked for breakfast and everyone in our group agreed that half the breakfast was cold or warm at the best . One breakfast had a hair in it also . This is not good at all for the premium price charged . We have been several times before as a group of six or less with no problems. I wanted to discuss with the lady serving but one of our group did not want to cause a scene so we just paid and left . This used to be our go to place on Sunday morning . It’s the most expensive breakfast in Portobello, and the quality of food does not now justify the price . We won’t be back .

We love L❤️VE this eatery. Awesome tasty and wholesome food, great coffees, brilliant and exceptional clean amenities. All served to you by a caring and friendly team. Honestly we go nowhere else. Breakfast, sandwiches, lunch AND ICE-CREAM direct from their counter chiller. Great place... 😉🤗
