The best restaurants in Windermere Applethwaite and Troutbeck South Lakeland North West

As a regular here for coffee/cake and breakfast, and always impressed, I took my Mum here for dinner. Wonderful service as usual, super pleasant staff, and the food was fabulous. I opted for the homemade chicken pie, which as I told the staff, was literally the best chicken pie I have ever had. 11/10. Definitely be returning for more dinners, as well as everything else. Thank you x

Opted here for coffee, although the coffee was nice, the wait was a little too long. However, the waiter was very friendly, apologetic and polite.

Just stopped by for early evening drinks and pizzas everything was excellent and a great experience

We visited yesterday evening after a day hiking up Helvellyn and we was in need of a pub food fix and after all the amazing reviews we thought we would give this place a try.The quality of the food was amazing we had the pigs in blankets and calamari to start and gammon steak for mains and it was cooked to perfection.The staff and Owner were lovely and we even ended up staying for alot more drinks than we should have due to how friendly the staff were and how amazing the atmosphere in the pub. (Sore heads this morning!!)Highly recommend visiting this place we would rate higher than 5* if we could!

I have been to the cafe many times and always enjoyed the experience. This time however there were a couple of issues. The cup I was as given for my tea was dirty and had old tea stains inside. My soup was delicious but was not served with the promised artisan bread and instead was accompanied by half a slice of plastic white bread and half a slice of ordinary brown. Not really acceptable for the price. The staff were lovely and very friendly. Hope it is better next time!

Yes this restaurant is in a beautiful location, the dining room is superbly constructed and we were cordially greeted on arrival for Sunday dinner but this did not compensate for what followed. We ordered drinks on the terrace but were firmly encouraged into the dining room after a very short time - with our drinks. The starters came very quickly. We were given no description of this course or indeed of any of the food at any stage. We were not offered the wine list but had to ask for it. The first glass was poured but after that we were left to our own devices. Most of us had ordered filet steak but were not asked how we would like it cooked. We were told "the chef does it his way". I said I would like medium rare but it arrived not even pink in the centre. The Senior server hardly spoke to us after that but left us with a junior who seemed out of her depth. The food was fine (apart from overcooked steak) but nothing more than that. This is not the service one expects in a Michelin starred restaurant charging these prices. It was rushed and negligent. Yes it was Sunday evening after a busy lunch service. That is no excuse

I had the decaf latte, which was barely drinkable. Not so much a coffee shop (at least to American eyes), more like a little diner.

This place sells amazon ice cream. The girl behind the counter was really helpful and took time to look after all her customers. Place was a real find.

We consider ourselves Chinese Takeaway connoisseurs and wow this didn’t disappoint! Fantastic from the very beginning. The gentleman was extremely welcoming and polite which is always a great start. The food was piping hot and exceedingly delicious. I wouldn’t look anywhere else if I was in Windermere.

Just attended a family wedding, the place was beautiful and the staff made it a memorable couple of days. Robert especially, made us laugh. All the staff were exceptional, friendly and helpful. The food was good and hot. Breakfast especially. Beautiful grounds and an easy walk to the lake.

After a rather fierce walk in the beautiful Lake District we decided, spur of the moment, to stay overnight. We came across Holbeck Ghyll on our quick Internet search, called ahead and were told there was a room available. No fuss over the phone, simply turn up and everything was arranged when we arrived. I think the lovely lady at reception took pity on me and upgraded us to a magical room on the top floor with a separate 'snug' with window seat, overlooking Lake Windermere. No doubt something to do with my muddy bedraggled state, having taken a slide in the mud during our walk. Had a much needed bath in the room and went down for a drink in the bar. In the beautiful dining room we had the most amazing Chateaubriand we had in a long time, if ever. Chef cooked it to absolute perfection. Side dishes and sauce were top quality as well. At breakfast the next morning we had a lovely chat with Tom, the owner and fantastic host of the hotel. He knows a lot about the history and has a great vision of local produce and wider sustainability for the hotel. Oh and breakfast was very good as well. Go and see Tom and the team, you won't be disappointed.
