A very beautiful place with stunning views of Lake Windermere. The whole complex was so dreamy! the greenery was very well maintained. A big thanks to Tom and Dan who were such gems, friendly and attentive :) The interior was very classy however it is very dated, the room had cracks along the ceiling, cobwebs, creaky floors and bathroom overall wasn't clean. It definitely needs a revamp but everything else was great!

My partner and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Holbeck Ghyll, and our experience was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, this charming bed and breakfast offers a serene escape with breathtaking views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding meadows. The moment we arrived, we felt transported to a different era, tucked away in a historic setting that exudes timeless charm and elegance. The house itself is beautifully maintained, with every detail reflecting the care and attention of its operator, Tom. From the moment we stepped through the door, Tom made us feel as though we were his most treasured guests. His warm and attentive nature, combined with his impeccable hospitality, ensured that every aspect of our stay was perfect. Whether it was offering insightful recommendations for local activities, or simply engaging in delightful conversation, Tom’s presence truly elevated our experience. One of the highlights of our stay was the proximity to the stunning walking trails that surround Holbeck Ghyll. We spent our day exploring the picturesque streams, verdant meadows, and enchanting woods, all just a stone’s throw from the property. The natural beauty of the Lake District is unparalleled, and there is something incredibly peaceful about wandering these trails, with only the gentle sounds of nature and the occasional rustle of sheep or cattle in the distance. Holbeck Ghyll is a place where you can truly unwind, reconnect with nature, and soak in the tranquil beauty of the Lake District. It offers a rare combination of luxurious comfort, historic charm, and natural splendor that leaves a lasting impression. Thank you, Tom, for making our stay so memorable. We cannot wait to return. Warm regards, Sam and Abbie

We had a wonderful stay for two weeks at this beautiful hotel. From the first untill the last day. The staff, Thom, the owner, Robert, Vera, Luke, Daniel and others, treated us like we lived in Downton Abbey! The food was excellent! Breakfast, a feast with unusual choices, dinner Michelin worthy. The room and bathroom were spacious but a bit outdated and in need of an update. Very good bed! (Renovation is in progress, as I understood.) Thom made our wedding aniversary unforgettable. In short, this hotel is a great place to stay! The location is priceless.

We had a beautiful stay here for 2 nights. Holbeck Ghyll is a grand building with lots of character, lovely grounds and our room was decorated to a high standard with stunning views of Lake windermere and hillside and doors leading out on to the terrace. Tom (the owner) went above and beyond and Luke was professional and very helpful. Breakfast and dinner were very enjoyable. We would definitley stay here again.

Back to where we honeymooned 50 years ago. Been modernised sympathetically in line with the age of the hotel. Amazing views, really relaxing, excellent service. Thank you x

My partner and I wholeheartedly recommend Holbeck Ghyll after spending the evening there yesterday. We started with a drink on the terrace overlooking the incredible view, then had a delicious meal in the dining room and finished with a drink in the lounge - Tom even lit the fire for us! The food was delicious and the service was top notch.

A real gem! We’ve been visiting the lakes for many years but so far, no hotel we’ve been to has the views on offer at Holbeck Ghyll. Breathtaking scenery out of every window. Rooms and lodges are well equipped and the staff are always very friendly and helpful. Food and restaurant are also top notch. And you get those views while you eat. It’s just a lovely place to be for a few nights.

This was our first visit to the Lake District, upon arrival the hotel looked stunning with great views of the lake. We was met at reception by the manager Tom, he gave us a very warm welcome and tour of the grounds and showing us to our suite. He filled us with lots of information and nothing seemed too much trouble for him he even went that one step further and gave us itinerary for the week with the best places to visit. The one negative we had about our visit was a couple of issues with our room one being the heating and the other being the TV, these were both rectified very quickly when we pointed these out (also would of been nice to have just a small table on the balcony whilst sitting their looking at the stunning views). Breakfast was exceptional lots of choice and also you could make up your own nothing was too much trouble, our waiter Dan made our stay feel very special as he always had a big smile on his face was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We feel Dan will go a long way in the hotel industry given the right guidance by his manager. Thankyou

This once prestigious Hotel is looking and feeling very tired. Current boss Tom is holding the Fort but it seems a shadow of its former self, it needs a thorough re furb., and is overpriced. Room 3 has a magnificent view over Lake Windemere, but is dated and a bit shabby. Food was not available in the week. The Hotel needs more staff, but this is extremely difficult due to Brexit. Drinks very expensive. Breakfast not brilliant.

We visited for an afternoon cream tea my wife had bought as a birthday gift. Wow, the food was just lovely, with our own private room with a delightful view of the langdale pikes. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! Just had one of the worst dining experiences of my life, for a 30th birthday celebration courtesy of Lucy’s on a plate Ambleside! I honestly don’t know where to begin with this, maybe the appalling manager, slow service, bland overpriced food, not sure really but here we go. So we email this place the previous evening to our booking enquiring about a reservation for 2 people, we heard nothing until WE contacted them around 3/4pm the following day to be told “oh yes im just on with the bookings now and was just about to call you”which I didn’t believe but that’s fine, on the phone I explained it was a special 30th birthday meal for my partner as they asked were we celebrating an occasion. We were looking forward to our meal and arrived slightly early about 6.20 for a 7pm table, we thought we could maybe have a drink if they had a bar or somewhere to wait for the table. We were shocked to see the manager fumbling around with his booking sheet to clearly see he didn’t have our names down, just to write us in in front of him, he then makes a joke saying “that would of been embarrassing”yeah it certainly would have been embarrassing so not a great start at all, we sit down to read the menu and notice some essay on the front talking about the guests and what they were celebrating, no mention of my partners 30th birthday just a half arsed after thought saying hello Andrew and Rhianne, as we were clearly forgotten about. After looking at the menu we decided to go for 2 pork belly starters £12 each and lamb shank £28 and lamb tagine £24, starters came out pretty quickly around 10-15 mins so great, unfortunately BLAND!! The apple puree could of been anything as there was no flavour at all, no sweetness to balance the dish just the flavour or pork and a little black pudding Bon Bon, BLAND! Then we wait for almost 1 hour, yes 1 hour for the main, asking the waiting staff how long, got told if it’s not here in 5 mins I’ll go and punch the chef, yes haha very funny but just get me my food I wasn’t up for jokes by this time, then the mains come, my lamb shank was dry had next to no sauce or should I say gravy at all, the mash was lukewarm the veg the same and very undercooked, I’m all for al dente but this just wasn’t and a piece of parsnip no bigger then your little finger, this place is a long way off fine dining! I asked for some more sauce and was brought a gravy boat of wishy washy gravy that they must use on every dish! Honestly very similar to a bisto gravy, where’s the lamb flavour or the reduced stock to coat the lamb shank, absolutely nothing! My partner said the lamb tagine was lukewarm again but after waiting an hour we were so hungry we just ate it, she said the cous cous was just bland and had nothing special about it, she said the cous cous from Sainsbury’s ‘food on the go’ was much nicer, why is this when we’re paying all this money? We also noticed there was no check back to see how we were enjoying the food as tbh they just weren’t bothered! When our plates were cleared(25 mins after we had finished) we were asked was everything ok, I said hmm yeah ok to which the waitress replied “ok yeah” great and takes the plates. This is where I would of informed the manager that someone was not very happy and suggest they go and speak to them! I was very reluctant to say anything because I’m aware I’m celebrating my partners 30th and didn’t want to make a scene, after such terrible service and food we just couldn’t order a dessert as we weren’t going to give these people my more of our money, we receive the bill at £115 for 2 starters 2 mains and 2 drinks each one of those was non alcoholic. Very overpriced for the quality you receive. Then to top the night off I go to pay, this is where the manger really shows his lack of experience, from me counting out the money to pay he never once asked “how was your meal” how did your partner enjoy her 30th birthday celebration” nothing! Didn’t even say enjoy your evening, honestly I recommend you research this place before going here as it’s beyond bad!

Amazing hotel in a beautiful location. We stayed in three rooms as we were going to Hilltop the next morning. It’s literally Nextdoor so perfect if you’ve booked to visit the Beatrix Potter house. Rooms were lovely, comfortable and warm
