The Codfather in South Lakeland

First time I have stopped here, v impressed, friendly staff, clean, fish & chips and battered sausage & chips (it was all for me!), all very tasty and best I've had in a long time, generous portions, Will stop again for more when in the area and they're open later than the others in the area.

Ate with my big group of friends and they gladly accommodated us!

Good fish and chips but nothing ready to serve. Had to wait for him to make the batter and fry both the fish and chips.

Organised a trip for 30 of my staff. We needed fish and chips! Preordered with the Codfather. Great service and great food. Superb. 30 happy staff!

Some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. Highly recommend the chips cooked to perfection the batter was moorish and the cod fresh. Even the salt and vinegar tasted better. Will come back again well worth the 280 mile journey

I recently visited the local fish and chips place, and it was very good. The fish was crispy and flaked beautifully, while the chips were golden and delicious. The friendly staff made the experience even better. It’s a great spot for a classic meal—definitely recommend giving it a try.

Best fish and chips in ambelside. Brilliant

When you arrive in ambleside the Codfather is not the immediate place you would think to go to, however when you get there the food is about as heavenly as prime Agüero. Streets wont forget The Codfather. Nothing draws you in more than the service you recieve in this godly establishment, the codfather is the best person in the world and greets you with a cheeky grin. GO TO THE CODFATHER.

Very nice fish and chips but damn expensive

Food was average. Prices were atrocious. Didn’t give ketchup with food even though they charged an arm and a leg for fish and chips. Don’t recommend

Chips were greasy and tasted old. Fish not crispy, nuggets were awful. I won't be returning.

Hate having a moan but this was dreadful! Firstly the sausage my children ordered had a funny smell, taste was off. The gentleman taking orders overcharged so we challenged and received a frosty reception. Eventually got the difference back, but that was after raised voices and finger wagging… that was not from us either! The chips were ok, gravy had little taste. The ships looked clean with others eating inside but I wouldn’t recommend anyone visiting.

Was looking forward to this as a holiday treat. Sadly the sausage my 5 year old had, and the battered sausage I had was disgusting. It was weird tasting, almost like a different meat. It was bendy and fatty. This caused my child to be sick. The chips just about edible but really quite disappointing too. My husband had the beef and onion pie which was below average. My other son had chips, chicken nuggets with curry sauce, he said the curry sauce was alright, and nuggets were ok. Would not recommend or return.

The best fish and chips we've had in a very long time, the fish was massive, and the chips tasted fresh .... will definitely be back.

Small fish & chips shop and they were clear that they fry everything in the same oil. Clean little shop. Chips looked okay but you could taste other things in the oil or probably the oil needs changing.

Went here because of the great reviews although we were worried about the prices. As we walked in, the place looked nice maybe a few too many lights but overall a nice looking place. All of the staff had a thunderous look on their face as though they just heard the worst news and were not very friendly when being served. The food was quick but sadly was not the warmest nor was the fish or chips crispy in any way the fillet burgers were dreadful and not worth the price. Portion sizes were upsetting for the price. Few hairs found in food aswell Would not recommend to anyone it’s just too expensive for what you get.

We are 35th Liverpool Boys’ Brigade. We ordered 22 meals in the afternoon for collection at 7pm. Everything was ready on time, all hot and delicious. The service was impeccable, would highly recommend them to everyone.

Well… decided to take the plunge for some fish and chips in Ambleside just next to where we were staying. I flamboyantly went into the Codfather and proudly asked for some cod and chips… and what was the response? “No cod”. Great. No cod? At the CODfather? A shame, I thought. Their solution? Well, haddock of course. Starving, I asked, “does it taste different”? With the response reassuringly asserting that haddock is indeed better, I somewhat reluctantly agreed. After waiting just a few minutes - just five or so - and seeing the progress of my haddock being cooked through the windows my haddock and chips was ready. I took it back and opened it up, still piping hot (and after taking a couple of wooden forks of course for the authentic experience) and tucked in. To my astonishment, the fish was indeed better than the cod & chips that I know. Better? I know right, crazy! If anyone is reading this and prepared to follow in my footsteps in going to the Codfather (should be called Haddockfather honestly) be aware that they are not cutting you short on the salt quantity they put on the fish and chips, plus there is no ketchup if that’s your thing. I would usually knock it down a star for that reason but going to the Codfather was an experience, a revelation, a new way of thinking more open-mindedly about the mind-forged preconceptions about fish and chips. I shall be more diligently comparing haddock and cod at my local chippy next time I opt for fish and chips and not on holiday.

Slow food but real good quality. Highly recommend the curry sauce.

Great wee chip shop. Reasonable sized portions are value for money. It's easily the best one in Ambleside.

We ordered 4 fish n chips The shop didn't look interested in dealing with us, looked racist. The French fries were the worst we ever had. The fish too was below standard We didn't enjoy our dinner at all

A decent chippy. Nothing pretentious. Fish comes in one size and one variety: “fish”. Chips are ok, the standard thick cut chippy type. Servers are efficient if not terribly pleased to see you. Portion sizes are generous. Fish and chips was good but not the best I’ve had ( but it’s not Yorkshire ;-) ). Worth a visit if you’re hungry!

Just spent £23 on 2 meals! Ordered Chips & Curry and a Chips, peas & gravy, and was given chips, peas and CURRY!! Not happy and overpriced 🙃

One of the few chippys open late I liked the fish and chips, they were both served hot and had a decent quantity. And their entire menu is 100% halal, which is so rare to find in this area. Special thanks to Vysel who took my order for making it a pleasurable experience.

The chips were lovey. However the gravy was tasteless and at nearly £13 for a small chips and peas, and the chips with gravy and cheese was a bit expensive.

Very poor chippy... would go as far as saying one of the worst I've ever had. Chips were cold and tasted like cardboard & I've got no idea what was going on with the curry sauce but it tasted like soil and was as runny as water. Battered sausage was tolerable but still not great. A smile from the staff wouldn't go amiss either. Plenty of lovely places in Ambleside to grab food but this isn't one- go elsewhere.

Had chips, cheese and gravy. The chips were cold and the gravy was horrid. Staff need to smile. Wouldn’t recommend.

Very expensive and poor quality- my parents couldn't finish their fish - £12 .95 for fish n chips and £3.95 for chips - takeaway ... I was expecting really good quality but 😒

Codfather was open until 10pm which was great for me as I hadn't eaten since breakfast and had been stuck on M6 for hours. Haddock and chips freshly cooked and superb

Nice fish and chips, friendly staff, and only took 7 minutes from paying to getting our order. Pretty generous portions - 2 fish and chips was enough for 4 of us for dinner (although we did have a slice of bread and butter each!).
