Fish & chips - simple but done well

The food is brilliant but the opening times as advertised online can't be trusted. We got there at 5.30pm, (the opening times advertised online was 1 - 7pm) they were closing at 5.30 because there weren't enough customers. You have to be prepared for the fact that they don't stick to their advertised opening times, and may well be shut.

Probably the best chippy in the Lake District

Worst fish and chips for a long time. Used to be good but awful now. Wish I'd taken a picture of all the black bits on the chips where the oil is clearly old and needs changing. £10 for a fish that was more batter than fish and could pick the whole thing up from one end it was that hard. 50p per sachet of tomato sauce as well, what a joke!

Food was above average but the waiting time of over 30 minutes was crazy. Didn't help that that staff were arguing with each other and miserable to customers. Definitely gone downhill.

Fish was mostly batter and over done. Most of the chips if you can call them that were small sharp scraps. The decent sized ones were also over cooked. Sorry but would not recommend.

Bit of a shame to be open until 8pm but "turn the fryers off at 7.45" though you are clearly still cooking for previous orders. The cook clearly wanted out the door at 8pm. Manged to still get the left over chips which where okay but quite expensive for what they where. Just wish customers turning up at 7.45 could get a fish and the other 2 family's behind us able to get more than a just a few sasuges.

OMG, if you’re in the Lake District and want to lose the crowd drive out here for your fish and chips. It’s a take away but do have some benches outside. You’d be going for the food, expect a very well managed queue.

Tastiest and the least greasy I have eaten since I moved to Cumbria 3 years ago.

Had the best ,not just chippy tea, but takeaway in a long time. The whole family commented how delicious it was after eating every last bit! The chips are worth their own mention, not greasy at all and defo home cut, scrumptious! Looking forward to our next tea from our friendly local, Crakeside Fish and Chips!

Delicious fish and chips and mushy peas, enjoyed in the shade on the picnic benches. Very welcome after a long drive to the Lakes. Friendly service. EDIT: called again last week, 6 years later. Both of us had fish, chips and peas again and a cup of tea. It was good!

Should have read the reviews 1st had sausage and chips the sausage was edible but the chips were soggy and more scraps than chips . the woman who was cooking the chips had a terrible cough and kept pulling the chips out of the fryer and pressing them with her fingers to make sure they were cooked very unprofessional and unhygienic the 1st time I visited and will definitely be the last

Used to be the best local chippy, now serving what seems like frozen chips. A huge shame.

Been coming here for years and was my favourite chippy within a 100 mile Radius but unfortunately over the last 18 months it’s gone downhill with tough chips but today was the final straw with these. Surely they must be frozen.

Not chip shop style chips, more like frozen chips, and sadly hardly any fish in a huge amount of batter, we had 4 haddock’s and all of them the same. Poor amount of fish and frozen.

Got a good system of ordering the awaiting for your freshly cooked fish and chips with a bleeper. This ensures piping hot freshly cooked fish and chips which is always excellent

Good chips, fish was well overcooked along with the burger that was so dry you could almost snap it. Got about 10 chips with the fish and about 15 with the burger won’t be going back.

Over £24 for 2 Fish and chips curry sauce and mushy peas ! The portions used to be of a healthy size for your money and it was a treat. But they are now served in a cardboard box which is very thin. If we actually got a potato each I’d be surprised. The fish was good. Sorry for moaning 😳

An excellent stop for some great authentic Fish & Chips. They serve burgers too.

Used to be a good chippy but £10 for fish and chips is a bit steep when the fish was wafer thin and gone in three bites, still get a decent amount of chips but deffo gone down the nick since the last time I was in, wondering if it has changed owners? The worst fish and chips I've ever had. The fish was dry and the batter brown and disgusting. The chips were horrible too. Definitely using old oil. I couldn't tell you what the actual fish was. £10 for fish and chips. Wouldn't pay a £1 for it, in fact if they were giving it away I would say no. People were asking for gravy, curry sauce, were told no. The mushy peas were lumps frozen and they poured hot water on them. Avoid at all costs. I am actually going to report them to health and safety standards. We threw it all in the bin. Disgusting All the good reviews put on here, are either fake or they ain't got a clue what food is.

I’ve been coming to this chippy for nearly three years as we have a home nearby. Every single visit without fail the quality has been between good and great. After-all this isn’t a maccy D’s where it’s super processed to be identical globally all the time! The consistency and quality is always reflected by the fact there is always a queue regardless of what day or time we visit. This has become a little tradition of ours to stop here for a chippy tea when we visit. I’d recommend it purely based on my experience over the past three years and would go further to say that in my experience service levels are typically a reflection of customer attitude.

I’m not a regular to this fish and chip shop and I wouldn’t advise anyone else to be. Though it’s quite the drive to another one if you are a Greenodd local Stay clear of this place! The Young girl serving was rather rude & I noticed that the lady frying was making eyes to her & this made me extremely uncomfortable. The food wasn’t any better than the service. The chips looked like they were sitting there for a good while & were caked in grease. However, the place was decorated really nicely and the pumpkins were a good touch for Halloween.

Stopped off for fish n chips and a pot of curry sauce,. Was worth the couple of minutes wait . Down the hatch , yummy but a little bit pricey , especially the curry sauce.

Nice people but chips very dry and crunchy, pie was nice, sausage ring tasted.odd. like verge of going off. Other sausage.very mushy inside. Lovely peas, too much pepper tho... won't bother going again Prices VERY EXPENSIVE . Only chippy around for.miles, so got you over a barrell.

Absolutely disgusting what kind of chips are served to you. I took it with me - a soft, inedible mush. Never again!

Food was good. We went on a Saturday tea time so long queues and half an hour wait but the staff were friendly and very helpful.

Slick service and the best chippy around. If be a lot fatter if it was open more. They shut a bit early but I drive 35 minutes to get there so that should be an indication of how good they are

Perhaps just caught them on a bad day. Service was great and lots of guests so must be popular. Fish was big enough but overcooked and too much batter and chips were also overcooked way too crispy but again plenty of them.

Great virtual queuing system now operating. Collect when your beeper goes off - mega easy. Quality of chips is good, but the portion size seems to depend on the size of the queue - shorter queue - more chips? Curry sauce is nice. Don't know if £ has increased recently. I never paid much attention to this before. Usually quite busy, so good sign, particularly for a small local business.

Came back after a successful visit last time in the Lake District -very disappointed £23.40 for two fish chips and curry sauce - the fish was small - batter thick greasy and undercooked and the chips - well what few of them were soggy - only good thing was the curry sauce - very disappointed at this expensive poor quality fish and chips - nothing like we last experienced a couple of years ago

Love the outside sitting area. Such a unique touch to the chippy. It isny my favourite chippy for taste but saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with what you're served. And it's damn fresh and crispy :) I love the new? Use of the beeping tags to tell you when your food is done, it worked really well and ensured good freshness.

Shocking. If I owned this place I would be embarrassed to charge people for the fish. It was grey/brown in colour, tasted of absolutely nothing and a very very thin fillet. Only redeeming factor was the chips. At £20 for fish and chips twice an absolute disgrace

Ordered 3 meals. Just the smell from the boxes made my mouth water, and the taste was out of this world. Love the idea of the beeper so you can sit in your car to wait for your order .

Not very hot tasty food but too much peas over powered the fish and chips

The Chippy at Greenod a must when visiting the lakes it's always on my itinerary every time l stay in the lakes. Just one downside given the weather in the lakes, there are picnic tables but no dining room so it's chips in the car if the rain comes.

Fantastic food, great service from the young fellow and lady. On holiday from Australia and the best fish and chips we’ve had in the UK. Any negative review is so nitpicky and inaccurate. Cheers for the great service and food guys 👍🏻

Me and a pal drove past this coming back from a hill walk and decided to drop in as it had a car park right outside and some seating. We both ordered fish and chips with mushy peas. Both agreed it was the best fish and chips we have had in years. Fish was flaky like it should be and batter cooked to perfection, chips were absolutely spot on too. Back home where we live we are spoilt with good chip shops but this honestly walked over them all. Cant wait to call back next time were in the lakes. PS/ Service was great too. 5*

Excellent service food was lovely

Picked up some food on the way home after a four hour journey. Asked for it without vinegar and salt, got home and it had vinegar on. My wife drove back, and because it was a couple of minutes after closing, they would only provide a refund. A replacement would have been nice, it’s not as though there are alternatives nearby. No dinner tonight then, shame they don’t value local repeat customers more.

Won't visit again the fish and chips were always good but something has happened? There was more batter than fish and extreamly oily and the cost was extortionate .

Never had a pie quite like it. Rrock hard, no gravy, about 2 bits of meat in it Tried the fish the other day.....grease galore, truly awful. Chips are lovely though here. Bit of a captive market where its situated, as no other close take outs about. It could be better

Excellent service would recommend a visit

Fantastic chippy, prices were reasonable, staff friendly, the alarm fob for waiting customers is an excellent touch. We had 4 large chips, 3 jumbo sausages, 3 buttered barms, 2 gravy and 2 curry sauce for under £30. I would definitely recommend as the food was fantastic, not a scrap left over.

Horrible fish and chips. Fish with thick batter. Chips looked and tasted like they were yesterday's heated up.AVOID at all costs .Way over priced at £19 for f and c twice. Will never go back.

I paid for fish & chips @9.50 for the food with a £20 note. Was given a bleeper to wait outside, forgot to pick up my change. It was only after I had left in my truck That I realised what I had done

Staff were a little off but it's a fish and chips so you're hardly there for silver service. However, the fish was freshly cooked, piping hot and tasted delicious. Chips were excellent. Curry sauce was outstanding. It was the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. By a long way.

Friendly service, and excellent fish and chips. Fish was cooked to order, but definitely worth the wait.

Terrible fish and chips, fish was so small (more fish in a birds eye fish finger) covered in a horrible thick batter to make the fish look bigger, average chips complete waste of money. Should be ashamed of themselves to serve this rubbish. Next time will drive past, must be better fish and chip shops in Ulverston.

Not been for about a year, last time amazing, this time fish under cooked, pepper in peas, chips drowned in vinegar. And £9.50 ridiculous for a takeaway, could have eaten at the pub. Not impressed 😕
