The lovely people who run this pub always make us feel so welcome. We visit on our horses every Sunday, tie our horses on the tie rings and enjoy a drink and snacks in the garden. It is a lovely welcoming atmosphere with affordable drinks.

Really disappointed. Heard good things about roast dinners on Sundays but unfortunately we went today and did not have a good experience. Very expensive and not a lot of food so not good value for money. Waited a long time for drinks. They brought the food out and then took it back as it was for the wrong table. We Waited an hour between starter and main. When it finally came roast potatoes did not seem fresh, chicken seemed as though it was boiled rather than roasted not much flavour either, beef was stringy, burnt Yorkshire pudding, half a carrot, not enough veg for the table, cauliflower cheese was not very nice I could go on. Puddings were better but still not great. We spent over £35 per person and do not think it was worth it. When paying we said we weren’t happy and the server just apologised and said have a nice day. Service was not good at all. Will not be returning.

Upon entry of the casino we received fantastic service on the bar and the restaurant. The food was very tasty and the service was friendly and quick. Very much recommended to visit. A+ restaurant.

Now then pal, we decided to delve deep into the depths of shardlow today and take the dogs for a bit of a stroll as the weather was beautiful. Did a bit of a circular down the ode canal path crossing at a lock and back up through great wilne and somehow stumbled upon the new inn. Set up stall at table 46 outside with the sun beaming in our faces then went with a pint of lager shandy and a chip cob as my preferred fodder. Tell you what pal, it was a belter of bap when it arrived oooozzing with chips and 3 cheeses it was very rustic just like the quaint pub and I tell you what pal the folk were lapping up the lunchtime sunshine 🌞 by the canal and you canna blame em........lovely 👍

The quiche is excellent, and the coffee is nice too. I'm not sure what was going on with the cheesy chips, though. I'm guessing they'd poured melted cheese on top. However, there was a heart-stopping amount, and it hardly had any cheese flavour at all! I'd be the last to complain about too much cheese, usually, but this wasn't pleasant. Also, since we last visited, they've boarded off the hot counter, which is a real shame. It's good to see the food choices before ordering (like every other garden centre restaurant), it's a bit off-putting.

Please note that this cafe is no longer called Mad Hatters and is now the Waterside Cafe. The staff are friendlier and the food is lovely, they open at consistent times (handy as the toilets are only open when the cafe is). There was a lot of fuss when Mad Hatters lease was not renewed and the catering taken on by Derby City Council but it has in my opinion improved.

Warn welcome on arrival. Our waiter Sohail (sorry if misspelt your name) was friendly, efficient and informative. The food was fabulous, full of taste, good size portions, good selection of dishes on the menu. Will be visiting again. Thank you for a lovely meal.
