We stayed in a holiday rental in Cornworthy and needed dinner on arrival after a long drive from East Sussex. We walked to the Hunters Lodge inn in hope of dinner, and boy what a find! Lovely food, reasonably priced and the staff treated us not as tourists but as if they knew us from the moment we walked in! We just had to go back the next evening, which happened to be New Year’s Eve. We were yet again welcomed in as part of the village, and celebrated with staff and locals in front of a warm fire, with great nibbles and drinks! A proper pub! Make sure you visit!!

We had booked a room tonight at this pub as we were travelling down for Polar express, unfortunately because of the storm as we live in the south west we are in a red zone and unable to travel as it is unsafe. I emailed the watermans arms last night no reply….i then rang to chase this up at 630 tonight due to no response and found the young girl I spoke to totally unhelpful and frankly rude! They said because we hadn’t given more than 24 hours notice they would charge us ,even though I had emailed the night before so I asked if they could move the booking to jan or feb so we wouldn’t lose the money she said no as it’s policy and wouldn’t even check. Then questioned why I was calling at 630pm when I should have checked in at 3pm….i said because I had emailed you last night and was waiting for a response again frankly a rude response which only added to my frustration! The lady then said I am looking at the inbox I have no email from you when I explained which email address I had sent it too as per the website her response was “oh I haven’t checked that one yet?!” Maybe check your email inboxes before accusing your customers of lying and not sending an email, where is your compassion and customer service?! I explained on the polar express thread on Facebook there were plenty of people who had booked hotels in the local area for tonight and couldn’t travel and the hotels had moved their bookings. Where is the watermans arms goodwill and kindness it is Christmas after all?! I explained I had been made redundant and we really couldn’t afford to lose this money and with it being Christmas could they check if we could move it as to not lose the money, she was totally inflexible wouldn’t even look at other dates in the next month or two for us. I understand the storm is not their fault but it is not our fault either, it’s not enough that our 5 year old daughter and ourselves are absolutely devastated we couldn’t travel and she missed the polar express and seeing Santa which we were all so looking forward to , but the fact they wouldn’t even look at moving the booking is just mean and nasty. Instead I was greeted with comment from the receptionist such as we have couples who have travelled from London why can’t you, first of all rude…..secondly check your geography London is in the south east we live in the south west with severe weather warnings in place. So thank you for ruining our weekend further and our Christmas you could have easily offered more empathy and looked to help your customers instead hide behind your “policy” and instead of trying trying to help your customers and make an awful situation better like many other hotels in the area have done. My advice avoid avoid avoid! If you want help or empathy from them in an unexpected situation forget it! You have made an awful weekend even worse your lack of empathy, flexibility and total lack of customer service is astounding and especially for a family who have already had an awful weekend, you could and should have done so much more to handle this situation better if other hotels and B&Bs can move bookings and be helpful why can’t you? Because you choose not too which is very disappointing and sad, Christmas should be the season of goodwill clearly this doesn’t apply to the watermans arms!

We ordered a devon pasty and a vegetable pasty. Both were inedible. Luke warm to cold. Microwaved so soft. Fillings were horrible. Staff didn't bother to check if meal was OK. We left the food and walked out. Avoid this place. I don't review often and usually only if very good, but this was bad enough to warn others

Called in for a reviving pint. Had a local beer called Legend which went down very well. Pub is quirky as it has a Post Office counter at one end of the bar. Steepish climb up from the river Dart but worthwhile.
